>no you can't buy that it's RWD what are you going to do when it snows bro?!

Fuck them! Took my ND2 (not pic related) out into it's first snow. Never had RWD before and always feared this day. Roads were empty so I took the chance since one day I may have to drive in snow so I better get used to it.
Started slow and took each turn a little faster till I was drifting all over town. Amazingly easy to control like I had been doing this my whole life. Always had a good feel for exactly how it would rotate and how far it would slide. lots of fun, still scared of snow + traffic though because I can't do anything about other drivers hitting me.
>>
I daily in the snow all winter, just put winter tires on. Fun to drive in the snow too. When it melts, summer tires go back on and push to the limits again.

As with most modern swaps the wiring is the nightmare, even if it happened to bolt straight up. If you don't know exactly what you're looking at when you look at the ECU wiring diagrams and know what needs to be spliced where, you're in for a terrible time.

The NA and NB uses the same trans and engine mounts. The NC is completely different and the ND is completely different. However FB and early model FC rx7 trans bolts into NA and NB.

Also the RX8 and the NC mx5 uses the exact same suspension set-up.

The RF, like other targa style cars, suffer from Helmholtz resonance or wind throb at certain speeds. You'll have to see yourself if it's a problem for you. Some say if you're going to spend most of your time with the top down, you're better off in a Roadster.
>>
>>25000121
>Helmholtz resonance
genuinely curious, can you explain further? I can see this happening to let's say a 911 targa since the rear glass does not let air through. The RF with the top down does not have glass on the rear so air goes through the cabin and the back structure pretty much acts like a pseudo spoiler/non structural roll bar.
>>
>>24999862
I have an RF and >>25000121 is basically correct.
Personally though it doesn't bother me much at all. Regardless I would never drive a soft top because I have to park in the city (Portland) fairly often
>>
>>25000170
Top Gear said this: [resonance] creeps up on you as the speedo climbs above 55mph, from a faint tapping to an overbearing drumming as turbulence clatters into the new structure behind your head. Above 70mph, the din is approaching intolerable.

Ever driven along at motorway speed with one window down in a car and the others up, so the pressure is unequal? Yeah, it’s that resonant, ear-popping sound, and it’s not pleasant. And not something the roadster suffers from.
>>
>>25000211
It's not ear popping, "Top Gear" writers are a bunch of pussies if that is actually what they wrote.
If you live in a place that is constantly sunny and you never need the top up then get the soft top. Otherwise get the RF

>>
>>25000195

Interesting. I have an RF too and I never put the top down if I'm expecting to drive at freeway speeds. I tried it once and I was bothered by the wheel/engine noise from nearby/adjacent cars and the clacking sounds that get made by cars passing through overpasses more than the wind noise.

Nah I've figured since this is probably the last gen that isn't partially electric, its worth keeping alive as long as possible. Just look at how much NAs go for now. I unironically think it's going to be worth a fair bit in 20 years and I plan on keeping mine rust free untill the drivetrain dies in 15 and then giving it a V8 swap and driving it for another 15. I bought a set of silicone hoses off ebay a while ago. They have come in handy more than once. I put a new hose in and everything seems fine.

I never let the car actually overheat for more than a few seconds, it just got a bit toasty and started spewing steam out the newly burst breather hole.

Horror story time. I had an offset bushing in at one front corner only without knowing it for years until I put coil-overs on. The squeaking and hilarious camber / etc made bushings a "this year" (read: now, I'm not driving until this gets fixed) task too.

Don’t heel toe then. I wear size 11 shoes usually, and depending on the car, like in our miatas, that’s too big to do a true heel toe position. So I personally use the sides of my foot, big toe and ball of foot doing the brake, pinky toes modulating the throttle. This ends up with my knee pressed against he side of the radio surround/center console, which it nearly does all the one anyways.

>>

Nope, the reverse. The lower the offset the more pushed out your wheels will be. If you get into 0 and even negative offsets the rim of the wheel will be pushed out even further from the face.

yeah, the m edition is great! the gold pinstripes on the burgundy paint look excellent in person, plus the interior is super nice. before i came to look at it i was wishing it had the miata british racing green but i fell in love with it seeing it in person.

as for car mods, probably nothing too extreme. might slap a turbo on it if my buddy yells at me enough about it, maybe throw in a silly horn but otherwise i don't want to molest it, it's a top trim model from a family of cars i have a soft spot for, i'd feel guilty ruining it.

hey yall

Found a 10th anniversary NB with around 82k miles on it. gonna try and get it for 9k

However, i just bought a silver nb with 128k miles with hardtop for 7k. The thing is my previous car was a silver rsx that I had for 8 years and i really didnt want another silver car but my nb was too juicy of a deal to pass up.
I was planning on either getting a paint job or wrapping it which will cost minimum 2k. So i feel that selling my nb and spending a lil more would be a better choice than a respray/wrap.
I think i can sell both the car and the hardtop separately and come out with around 8.5k.

yall think this move is wise? or am i trippin

You sit closer to the rear wheels than any previous miata so those Gs when cornering hit you even harder, especially when you slide a little. The extra power puts it in a respectable range on par with the Honda S2000 but with a linear power curve so the acceleration feells great.

If you already have top hats and are looking for something manageable, get some Koni Yellows and run them on the softer end of the damping range. Pair that with either your oem springs or something like some FM springs and you'll get something nice to ride with with a bit more stiffness.

Exactly one year ago I bought it as my first car completely clean with 150k km mileage, half a year after getting my license. Got some sporty brake discs & pads, sporty wheel, good set of tires, a hardtop, and a 1.8 VVT engine swap (kept the 1.6 clutch & flywheel as a sweaty weight saving optimization). Also took it out to the Nordschleife on a non-busy weekday when it still had the 1.6 engine and it was such a joy to drive and handle. Recently got a great deal on a pair of black leather Lotus Elise seats in great condition (only a minor scuff on the side), once I put them in I'll be able to attend Zandvoort track days where helmets are mandatory (can't fit in with a helmet in a stock post-foamectomy seat).
Only one sad story so far, and that is, I bought a used ME221 for 500 bucks that turned out to be fried, but that's about it.

What's the consensus on roll bars? Does anyone have one if they daily their miat? I watched a video of someone doing it on their NC and basically it fucked up his seat belt tension so now his seatbelt always has some slack, arguably making the car more dangerous in every kind of accident, even a rollover. I see people street driving Miatas in the city with rollbars all the time but isn't it kind of retarded without a harness/helmet? Do people think rolling a Miata is more likely than getting rear ended and bonking your head against the rollbar or having it collapse into the cabin when Karen crumples your tiny roadster from behind? It seems kind of dumb to me, making the more likely crash more dangerous while preparing for the less likely rollover.
>>
>>25040122
explain?
>>
>>25040286
If you get rear ended so hard it pushes the roll bar that far forward at an appreciable speed, I don't know what to tell you. You can add a layer of foam around it...which will help somewhat. Usually they'll be high enough that it would hit the upper half of your head and not the brainstem part so that's good. They're REQUIRED if you ever want to track the car as far as I know (but not for AutoX?).
check out greg and how far behind the bar is from his headrest. That's a decent amount of distance.

I’m not a fan. I’m a tall guy though, and my head is just barely grazing where the bar usually wants to be, in na’s and nb’s anyways. Even with padding I’ve had my head get fairly well bonked by a hard launch in my friends turboed car. A lower seat would help with this though.
>>25040789
Auto cross does not require them at all, but you aren’t penalized by having them either, unlike with some other non performance mods.
Any kind of hill limb event or wheel to wheel racing will require them. I believe nasa hpd events may let you track the car without a roll bar, but I’m not positive on it. I don’t have any in my region so I’ve never checked.

chimp ass me operates on nigpletion. it's definitely still four colors but somehow more painted than that picture. i had meant in my drunken stupor to tell that one anon not to put 17s or anything x10 on his car because unsprung weight is a fuckin trip. the car could break 120 on the 14s but i can't break 90 in the same stretch of time.

how fast do you have to go for wing to produce any meaningful downforce on a miata

Do you think the big wing counters the Helmholtz resonance?
>>
>>25042510
Speed wont matter if the wing sees only dirty air.
>>
>>25042510
I mean, it depends on the wing. Have a friend with a Miata pushing 400 horse now and he definitely goes fast enough for it to matter. I rode in the car when he was only making 220 or so and at that point the wing was helping out at highway speed, at least to keep the wheels from slipping when he was doing redline shifts into third.

I really like the ND miatas. They're just smiley little cars. When do you miata bois think a new one (NE?) miata is going to come out so ND prices can come down?

Here's to hoping the next one is ICE only
>>
>>25042646
If it's hybrid then ND's are only going up and god know where inflation will take it.

I passed up on a 2019 because it felt so cramped, me being 6'2". Ended up getting a '19 Si. Still wonder if I could've made the sitting positing more comfy and gotten better visibility with new seats or something.

Xida gs. 550/350 lb springs. Good amount of travel and streetable ride height. Damping adjustment can go from slightly stiffer than stock to uncomfortable. I keep mine about 4 clicks from full soft. Perfect for a fun weekend only street oriented car. Downsides: cost.

Anon not trying to be a dick but if you bought that for the price "80s retro tech" sells these for I think you got ripped off. I found the exact same model with a different paintjob being sold for 30 bucks on Amazon. These guys are probably just ordering them, painting them and selling them for 5-10x profit.
>>
>>25024697
If they had a Hybrid manual like a CRZ, which seems to be their plan, I would be the first to order
>>
>>25045122
why? hybrids objectively don't last as long and if it's unpopular and spells the death knell of the miata battery replacements will be impossible

Gonna take a swing at replacing my NB's cylinder head tomorrow, wish me luck lads

not sure but some dealers in my state already have the 2022s listed as "in transit"
>>
>be me
>tires are bald
>purchase new tires from dealership
>a few months later notice one tire is going flat
>fill up the tire, take it back to get checked out
>”we checked it out and there was no puncture, the tire was just out of air”
>don’t bother arguing how the air escaped in the first place after just buying the tires from them
>same thing happens 2 months later, take it back in for another inspection
>”Look, we took the tire off this time and there’s nothing. Maybe someone is just letting air out to fuck with you.”
>at this point growing more frustrated and start telling them to take their shitty tires back.
>tldr they eventually find the defect in the shitty tire they sold me
I am vindicated

Guys, I just want to apologize. I never understood Miata hype (other than it being a cute little sports car) until a few days ago when a guy passed me coming off the onramp onto the Interstate. He punched the gas as he was coming out behind me and I swear the little guy was on two tires for a second. The body swayed, it was mesmerizing. Then he zoomed past me at like 90mph. I wasn't even in the car and I screamed and punched the roof like a little kid. That thing has some serious get up and go.

That's what I did. They got me.
No regrets though. Never felt so alive as I am in that car. It helps that I live in a small WA town surrounded twisty well maintained forest roads. I've lived here since 06' and never seen them since I only drove A to B before.

Can someone tell me why airbag computers specify which way it is supposed to sit?

I replaced mine in my NB and left the old one in its spot because it’s a giant bitch to remove.

Ex workmate was parting out his NA6 and let me have first dibs on a bunch of shit. The first thing I was going to take was the hood, even though the paint was terrible on it.

It had the powerbulge and everything, but it was made from steel.

Redneck style right there. Gross. But at least it's not a 6000lbs diesel and lifted truck, so I'll allow it.

got a riddle
>mx-5 nb, swapped nbfl 1.8 into it
>engine was choking and then revving high when throttle is open 10-15%, kind of waving rpm
>wired obd2 into it
>obd2 scanner says tps shows 0% until you open throttle any less than 15-20%
>okay, so it's problem solved, bad tps
>got another tps
>it shows exactly same readings, 0% until you open throttle more than 15-20%
>throttle itself is very simple in anything related to the problem, it's just a metal rod that rotates moving part inside tps, it cannot possibly be misaligned or anything
>there is no resistance between ecu and tps on signal wire, checked
>car works fine if i ghetto rotate tps to the side to force it to give higher readings

Any ideas? I can work around it, but i really can't understand why this problem is even here. afaik NBFL uses same TPS as any other miata with 3-pin tps, so i don't think i have wrong parts here. We even tried different stock ecu to make sure it's not that, but it was working exactly the same so i think we can exclude that.
>>
>>25051207
Also got a ghetto workaround answer by the way: I've mounted TPS correctly and then added a 470ohm resistor between ground wire of TPS and TPS itself. I wasn't doing the swap, so i wonder if this line should be grounded directly, or maybe it's originally connected to something different than direct ground.
