CLASSIC CAR GENERAL - /ccg/

Overpriced Edition

Previous Thread:
>>24690654

>Everybody has their own taste, but some tastes are wrong. If you aren't sure if your car is classic or not, it's not.
>Being made before 1985 does not automatically make a car a classic.
>Your Honda Miata doesn't belong here.
>US, Euro, Jap, or whatever.
>Post your classic, your work on it, your hackery, and get advice.
>Any and all discussion about classics welcome, but may not necessarily generate responses; don't get butthurt.
>Period correct performance > cosmetics.
>Metal > plastic.
>Classic shitbox > modern shitbox.
>JBweld and RTV can fix anything
>If you see rust there is more.
>Rust and bodywork are the most difficult thing to repair.
>Electrical work is difficult until you stop reading forum posts and buy a multimeter.
>Low oil pressure? Worn mains and rod bearings. Use lucas and 15W40 until you afford a rebuild.
>Do NOT buy a classic and plan to pay someone to work on it. You need to be able to do 90% or more of the work or you will go broke.
>You will spend twice your budget, unless you have years of experience. If the salty old hands agree, it's true.
>Nothing is as easy as it seems
>Post classics or classic related content or gtfo

On the road to Texas, made it from bay area to Barstow and the wind got too much for me. I'll hit the desert tomorrow morning when it's supposed to be calm. Upside, got to drive on part of rt 66. Dust so bad I couldn't see 10ft ahead of me in some places.

Guy had bought this a month prior. Heard about his boss's friend selling it, flew out to Salt Lake UT on a whim and drove it back with the only issue is that the air filter kept blowing off the carb. Apparently the little 4cyl could still reach 115mph on flat ground

Made friends with the owner of the cutlass. Family owned car since new, and he brought it here from Canada when he moved. Gonna help him desmog it

More important than the Lightning Rods is the 8.5 rear axle.

The way it sits and the chrome side mirror suggest it's a 9C1 so yeah it should have a 350.

Carburetor
>>
>>24713432
Unfortunately, and I’m not just saying this to hop on the twink hate bandwagon, there will ALWAYS seem to be some stupid random little shit that breaks on cars this old. Even if you’ve already been through it and already replaced everything
>power steering line burst
>alternator field wire burns out
>radiator springs leak
>pulley bearing seizes
>fuel pump diaphragm leaks internally fuel into the oil
>brake hose collapses
>ignition switch fails to turn off car
These are just the ones I can remember, little random bull shit even though all those parts/systems have been gone through
>>
>>24713432
It's only daily driver status when you can walk out to it and take it on a errand or trip without a second thought
>>
>>24712682
Was he playing hardbass? Or dressed like a gopnik?
>>
>>24713432
Yeah that's fair, gotta keep driving it and see what breaks next.
>>
>>24713472
Oh there are still a little millions things, but might as well enjoy the bit of time that it's not terribly broken. Also I have stripped a fair bit of things off the car to try to, simplify it so you know less 70s emissions tech to break.
>>24713516
If I wasn't always an anxious mess I probably could.
>>24713578
Pretty much
>>
>>24713516
Though I do worry less about having a parts car, I figure you know if the engine goes and the long block is shot, well I have a spare.
>>
>>24713472
Until you know what every little sound is without panicking, is your car DD ready.

>>24713545
Well it's a very hipster/LGBTQRS town that it was hosted in, so like an extreme mix of those 2.
>>
>>24713472
>Power steering lime broke on me
>Belt snapped a few times
>Transmission line blew a few times
>Leaky radiator at one point
>Leaky transmission
>Axle bearing
>Battery cable wiggling loose
That's about it. Very dailyable
>>
>>24713614
Your car is ready when you're comfortable enough to ignore strange sounds until something breaks

It's like the nigga never had a hand me down car in his life or something. But there's another guy in town that's got me beat in weird shitbox daily. Cutlass is running. Just waiting on the new sending unit to put the fuel tank in it, so I can tune and adjust everything. Loud as fuck because the exhaust pipes don't meet up to the headers. Going to need to go to an exhaust shop.

My buddy had the turbo 350 rebuilt before the engine and trans was put in. It absolutely puked transmission fluid out the side of servo cup. Guess they just pinched the o-ring. I was able to reseat it and it's all good now. Can't wait to test drive this thing.

We're in a tank and anon is not.
Fun fact it's alot cheaper to insure a tank here in Bongland, like £280 and then road tax is like £175. It's about half the price of car tax/insurance and I have no idea why.
I'm sure you'll have that baby running smoother in no time.

Now that the fuel pump, plugs, wires, filters, etc. have all came in and been replaced, I've got a smooth-riding cruiser. Though, the tires seemed a tad low, so I'll check that tomorrow morning and see if I need to replace them. Need to get a few fluids and some other bits.

No, imo anything on the 1/4 needs to be lengthwise in order to accentuate the space. Possibly also with slanted letters to add an impression of speed. Round could work on the door but then it risks looking like a number decal.

So I'd probably either name the car or make up a fictional speed shop name and put it on the 1/4. Probably should have a good amount of contingency decals and the class designation too if you're going to go for that look.

Those stupid motors/clutches made up half the maintenance on my old man's t-bird when he had it. I ended up taking a new one and filling the clutch housing with bondo; no clutch action but it lasted.

In the cougars are the motors mounted midway in the door like the mustang? or low in the door like the t-bird
>>
>>24732826
theyre mounted right beside the speaker holes, ive done them on my 6 cylinder car as they were locked up and had dead clutches aswell, but because I had an spare from an f150 and found one on ebay from a mark 7 lincholn for 23 bucks I just swapped them.
these are original never opened motors and ofcoarse theyre 40 years old so its time to go through them

It sounds stupid, but I like the idea of shooting an ak47 from a moving sedan's sunroof.
>>24732926
Definitely not a garage queen. Maybe it just isn't meant to be. I figure it would simple, like a casement window for a house, a frame, then window inside with a gulley to prevent water from entering inside.

>>
>>24733125
Convertibles are only fine under 50 mph with the top down. Otherwise it's just a bunch of wind noise or the top flapping around. The top is aware item, and they leak. Even modern ragtops suck, so how do you think of classic is going to be?
>>
>>24733296
Damn that sucks. The sunroof isn't retarded enough for me to do it, but for some reason the ragtop seems so retarded I want to do it more.
I mean, the G-bodies already don't have back windows that can roll down so it's not like I'm the smartest person to have chosen it as a daily and gran tourer.
I think I made my decision. I'll keep the 4 door's roof stock, but if I ever get a wagon I'm going full retard and LS swapping it and installing a ragtop.
