The older the car is, the worse it is. Advancements like fuel injection, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and power steering have significantly improved the usability and value of cars. Why fawn over objectively worse products when we've gained so much in just the past three decades?

Have the option to buy another Vandura, Its a 91 but the interior is clean and it was a grandpa van so it has a stack of paperwork for maintance. Getting a friend price on it for 1k, problem is he is about 20 hours away.

The older a car is, the less fucking BS computer shit I have to deal with to fix it. My '71 had a wiring fire and all it's gonna take is a couple 80 dollar parts and I should be g2g. If that happened in my 2011 Dodge, shit would be FUBAR.

just get something with a chevy 350 v8, those things grow on trees and were stupidly simple with cheap plentiful parts everywhere.

seized motor? $200 gets you a drop in replacement that will likely run-as-is.

want a performance oriented crate motor with all new parts? a dressed up chevy 350 that makes 350+hp would be around $3,800. if you can supply at least *some* of the upper parts like the intake and carb you can get a 290+hp one for about $2,500.

My Lincoln 175 has a chart for metal thickness on the inside of the wire feed access cover that will show what feed rate and amp rate applies to the sheet metal. I would think for floorpans you'd be in setting C 2-4 feed setting for floorpans. When there, make sure to hop around the pan circumference to prevent warping when tacking, then go at it full send in 1-2 inch areas and skip around as well. Youtube wire feed welding and try and follow the circular style method. Good luck.

I put a 130amp ford 1G alternator on my car.
Im using v belts.
My v belts keep getting cooked and thrown by my alternator when l try to do my break in.

Im assuming l need a twin pulley on the alternator to share the load between the v belts.
Now lve ordered that. Its cheap.
But is that really gonna fix my problem?
Should l increase the drive of my alternator pulley so it stops nuking my belts at such low RPM?
>>
>>24623477
>130amp ford 1G
I didn't know those existed. If you want to underdrive your alternator get the Ford "hy-po" style pulley for an old mustang.

>>24623202
They're not inherently bad, but they're boomer restomod tech and usually parts like that are low quality.
The technical downside of one wire alts is that they sample voltage at the same place they supply it, were ideally you would sample the battery voltage directly and the alt would charge to match that. If you have your battery in the trunk with a long wire, or some other kind of voltage drop then a one wire alternator may not charge the system to a high enough voltage.
>>
>>24623546
Yeah me dummy its simply 100amp. But its still nearly double what the car came with. Poor little v-belts.
My cars going to be revving up 1000rpm higher than it ever has. And its idle is gonna be "fair."

Will making the alternator pulley a little bigger help keep my belts alive? As the alternator wont be working so hard down low?
Kinda dumb over here.
>>
>>24623581
My guess is there's a different issue that's damaging your belt. A bigger alternator pulley may help though. It both spins the alternator slower and gives the belt more pulley to grip. The downside is you'll have to rev the engine higher to get full amperage output from the alternator assuming you need it.

well I had to convert from a generator, and I didn't want to fuck with an external voltage regulator.
Tuff Stuff has decent reviews, but turns out it's not charging at idle, and that would be a 1-wire alt issue... might have to find a smaller pulley or something. it's too bad, it has a really nice casting
>>
>>24625349
A pully like in your pic is oem size and shouldn't be the problem for charging at idle. Idk too much about those tuff stuff alternators specifically.
If you want to upgrade; the alternator off a 1994 v8 mustang has the same mounting style as the old fords. It's a g3 with an internal regulator and rated for 130 amps.

Chances are it's a 225, I wouldn't bother with a 170 (the 225 is already slow as it is). The /6 is a great motor, almost unlikable, and can still keep up with modern traffic. Expect V8 mpg though.

If it's a 3 on the tree, check for sloppiness in the shifter and make sure it goes into all gears with ease, the bushings for them aren't that common so it can be a pain to fix. Other than that or fucked wiring, just typical Mopar rust. I did have a carb cooking issue that got resolved by getting rid of the original air filter housing.

You need to change the pully that the alternator is connected to. Generators need to spin at lower RPMs otherwise they will overcharge and burn up, if you're using a factory pully you need to measure it and the alternator pulley and figure out what a good ratio is for it. here is a example.
An alternator needs 1800-2000 RPM at idle to make power and will make maximum output at 6000 rpm but will fail at 16,000 RPM

Measure Alternator pulley size (for example 2.5")

Measure Crankshaft Pulley Size (for example 5")

The Ratio is 2:1 (5 divided by 2.5 = 2)

To find MAX RPM: take your Max engine Speed (for example 5800 RPM) and multiply it by the calculated ratio (5800 x 2) = 11,600 shaft RPM

To find IDLE RPM: Multiply Idle RPM x Ratio (for example 1000 x 2) = 2000 shaft RPM @ Idle
>>

The biggest thing to watch out for is price. Don't get screwed, 4 door A-bodies are pretty close to worthless 4-5k for a low milage immaculate car. If it's a ragtop check for rust around the roof seam on the C pillar, floorboards under the dash where the wiper seals leak, rear-wheel openings at the corners like to rust, and check front and rear frame rails. If it is a 170 they are a fair bit more reliable than the 225 but obviously have less power. On the trans make sure there is a kick-down linkage connected to the carb if there isn't, the trans may already be toast tourqeflights need a kick down to operate properly. If you do get it head over to ForABodiesOnly.com you'll find any info you need.

I got to drive my car a total of about 30ft. I miss everything about it so much. The smooth torque application, the effortless idle, the over boosted power steering, everything! They just need new fender nuts since almost all of mine are fucked. Back window will go in today or tomorrow morning with primer. Found an alignment shop nearby that will take it in so I can do the springs before Tucson duct tape drags. Anyone else going?

I know, and I've embraced it. The car is a part of me and driving it invigorates the soul. Haven't felt such energy in months and it is only a mere taste of what it can do for me. I pity that you'll never establish that connection with anything, human, machine or otherwise. You'll never get to feel that supernatural experience of resurrecting a machine, the feeling that the car is alive and has a soul

In having real trouble finding photos of it at the moment.

265 bored 30 thou over, mild cam, big valves, holley 4 barrel which I think is around 390cfm with mech secondaries and 1 ¾" headers.

Sounds like a great combo for a manual car... unfortunately its in front of a bog stock BW35 auto so its a dog of a thing. Starts easy but doesn't idle well when cold and drinks fuel.

Looking at FItech self learning EFI as an alternative to the holler, my boss has a bathurst HK monaro that he's getting sick of the carby on so we are looking at installing EFI on that and if that's easy enough to set up il get one for my car too.

Surely it shares parts with some other car usually small volume cars will contract and get parts from different manufacturers. Rolls Royce for example uses BMW ignition coils
>>
>>24633815
Unfortunately almost every part is unique to this model not including common service parts like belts etc
>>
>>24633824
I'd try comparing the suspension components to models and manufacturers from the same time period. It's hard to believe they made tooling and machines to make parts for a fairly low volume car

Saw a 1971 Ford LTD for sale, always wanted a cool classic car like it. It's in good driving condition as far as I can tell, guy said it's a running and driving car and it just needs a carb clean. He's looking to unload it for $2k, should I do it bros? Kind of want to daily drive it but I'm not sure. I'm in Missouri so it's not terrible weather but still bad enough to where I'll keep my 2005 Malibu. Should I daily drive it? Or keep it for a summer/weekend car? I don't know much about taking care of classics aside from mileage is shit (I'll budget, it's not that hard ffs) and that you'll have to learn how to do things. With Youtube, tools, and common sense I can do this. I WANT to learn how to take care of my own car better. Should I bother with it at all? Anyone got any advice for me?

forgot to mention my folks are against the idea. Even though I'm 18, I'm still under their roof for another year while I finish school. I'm under their roof so I don't know if they'd let me head on out to Colorado to get the car. It's damn far

>>
>>24642470
Kinda what I was expecting although I'm afraid I'll be looking at 300 a tire for some
>>
>>24642507

That's perfect for the front. I might see if Americas tire can get that in stock. For the rears I might have some issues. I have 275 60r15s. It's really wide and I think the only performance tire I can get for that size would be something just shy of drag radials

I've listed my two Camaros and the '95 Fleetwood up for sale. If I can get rid of the Camaros, I'll be replacing them with one that has a fresh repaint and a blown motor and swapping in a LS.
