"Happy birthday to me" editionPicked up a new truck, my first Ford (personally, not within family). Needed something to haul/tow for my large scale farm and house projects, and it was a steal of a deal. Started in the lot, drove all the way back home for two hours through the mountains, parked perfectly in my driveway, and promptly wouldn't start again. Still beyond pleased with the pick-up. Praying its only the starter, but it won't engage with the plate. Might be missing teeth. If I have to replace the flexplate, the engine is coming out. Might do more if that's the case.
>>24177302Funny - my young neighbor down the way has one with a camper shell, in superb condition. Doubt he'd ever part with it, though. Great little trucks.
>>24177315I've done a good amount of research on it on the forums. Seems like the best mods are hypereutectic pistons, metal timing gear, torque cam, and for sure roller rockers. A lot of guys are using chevy rockers because they fit well. Gives a huge performance boost over the stock rockers. Basically im planning on covering up the few weak spots of the engine to make it indestructible.

>>24177070It's the flex plate but they're not too bad. Don't forget a fresh transmission tailshaft seal and to inspect the U-joints and rubber mounts all around (I'd replace the trans mount while you've backed it off). The 300 is Fords most durable engine also used in industry, flightline aircraft tugs and much more. Inspect the brakes and if you ever pull a caliper (or live where there's winter) put some nickel (not the watery auto store SPermatex shit) anti-seize on the sliding surfaces. The right side gets wetter (being nearest the curb) and sticks first. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php is a goldmine with many pro mechanics.
I finally found a shell that fits my truck on craigslist. I previously had one that came off a mid 90s model so it never fit quite right. Only problem was that it was silver and it looked shitty with the white paint so I sanded it down and spray painted it on Sunday. The next project will be making a raised platform across the wheel wells so that I can tie down the kayak underneath and keep my camping gear dry on top.
Why would you buy a truck when you could just have a cool sports car and attach a trailer to it? You get a cool car to pick up chicks in and you can carry things with the trailer unless you’re buying RV’s but I feel like that’s something only boomers do. I only need a bed for taking stuff to the dumb or buying lumber, gravel, washing machines, cabinets etc for house projects.
>>24181846I confess I have used my v6 charger to move more stuff with a trailer then my R/T.

Very sentimental to me working on pic related. This is my Pops old 3/4 ton Chevy. Left in kind of bad shape mostly because he had been battling for Parkinson’s for the last decade of his life. Today was the first time it had got it out on the road in 6-7 years. Feels good man.

OP here, thanks for the pleasant comments. Cleaned up the bay a little - the gentleman who owned this before me took great care of it, outside of the odd electrical work. Ordered a new starter, solenoid, top/bottom hoses for the radiator, valve cover gasket and serpentine. I'll pull the old starter to check the drive and flexplate today.

>>24184989Damn I wish my 300 looked like that. mine was a part hauler for a teamster company. low wear on the engine but the body, power steering, shocks, and brakes were all shot from being overloaded.
Haven't had as much time to work on it as I'd hoped, but nearly every part's in and I'm almost ready to start welding the floors. Not exactly a barn find but getting a free truck from a 100 year old dude is cool enough.
I own a truck similar to pic related, though this isnt mine exactly. Its a 2015 F150 2.7l 2WD and i love my truck so much. I bought it a year ago Certified PreOwned with 44k miles. Ive done so much to it, installed Katzkin leather, new speakers and amp, spray-in bed liner, moromoto xB headlights, 2” level with 32” BFG K02’s. Next week, im getting a truetrac installed and regearing from 3.31 to 3.73 gears. My truck is my baby and it never gets tiring to drive
>>24189419Nice pickup - the guy likely just wants it taken care of. There's a '72 GMC short bed down the street that belonged to a guy who passed away. His father is keeping it in a bay and every time I drive by it, I rubberneck to look. Needs to be cared for, but I get the hesitancy to hold onto it for sentimental reasons.>>24189317This truck was super clean for the price, cannot believe how I was able to snag it. It sounds like everything else goes before the 300.
Wasn't working for 6 months and wasn't spending wisely. Lost my 2017 Silverado. I'm saving up for something a little older. I miss having an older cheaper truck you don't have to worry about keeping nice kek. It's also really nice not making payments on a vehicle monthly for the first time in awhile. My dad has a first gen ram single cab I could basically have if I can get it running, just sat a long time. I'm driving my brother little Integra until I save a bit, but it's almost too small for me, I have to like crawl into it. I miss being able to put my dirt bike or haul the camper too. I don't wrench so I dunno where to start I guess so if Its carberated or what. There's also an 05 ram there just sitting in the garage but it was grandpa's for years and I think my uncle drives it sometimes, I think my littler cousin was picking rocks out of fields this summer with and it looks like he fucked it right about. Fenders for the box have dents everyfuckin where now. I swear 5 months ago there was no dents at all. Either that or my uncle just stopped giving a fuck about it.

Just finished reading every post on this thread, and have decided this (along with the twingo and sometimes miata) threads are the only ones that actually embrace the enthusiast angle of the board. No one shitting on other peoples trucks, positive reinforcement, nostalgia about vehicles owned by previous family members. Keep it up anons.
>>24177070Nice truck! My 2002 Silverado 1500 was just totaled so need a new truck this week. I’m stuck between a 2001 Ford F-250 7.3l or another GMT800 5.3. I really like the F-250s but have never owned a diesel.
>>24190636>Nice pickup - the guy likely just wants it taken care of.Yeah, it's a funny story. The guy lives a few blocks away and is a client of mine. I was working at his place over the winter and making smalltalk, just asked him what that old truck was I used to see in his driveway. He says "I still have it, do you want to buy it?" I told him I wasn't looking to buy a truck. Then he says "I'll give it to you." Told him I wasn't really looking for another project, and he comes back with "We'll make it happen." So I was ordered to take it.He basically liked the fact I wasn't a tard and respected old stuff, plus he wanted to keep it in the neighborhood. He bought it new at a dealership that no longer exists, where a Starbucks is now in the middle of a residential neighborhood. His family owns/owned a lot of property around here and needed a plow/brush truck for a handyman they used to hire full-time. Supposedly it's never really been out of town and it has 32K original miles. I can trace it accurately as far back as about 1998 and it's only been driven 1000mi since then.1977 F150 Custom 4x4 shortbed, 300 i6, 4sp. Back in the day trucks shipped without bumpers and you'd choose a factory or aftermarket one from the dealer you bought it from. This guy apparently didn't fall for the bumper jew and it spent 44 years being backed into stuff. I found a nice original sport bumper so it has one for the first time mow.
Picking up a 85 f250 with the 460 later today. Using it for my farm. Can't wait to mod it a little.

Here's my Chevy that I've been working on for some time. I have a professional working on the tranny now since it needs to be capable of handling 550+ HP and a potential blower.
>>24191171Thanks. I can very well see it become a project in the future. As of now my short-term goal is to upgrade all the degraded rubber with poly counterparts. Eventually a new windscreen, this one has a big crack in it. Other than that it doesn't leak any fluid, doesn't burn any oil. 4L60E trans has been rebuilt a couple of years ago, spider injection has ~15,000 miles on it. I plan to own this one for a long time.
>father in law has a mint condition 71 Silverado>And a too trim 16 Silverado with a ton of custom work>Both stay spotless and haven't left his garage in two and a half years I get it to keep them in nice condition, but he drives his fucking work van everywhere. He has had the 71 since my wife was a kid, I guess he won't even take it out if there's a cloud. I started calling them mall crawlers and it bugs the hell out of him kek. At least mall crawlers leave the garage.
>>24190636Oh yeah as long as something that resembles oil is in the engine and you dont rev it to 6k rpm then itll be fine. Its all the shit Ford parts like the power steering that you gotta stay on top of. Wish i could delete all that crap.
>>24191184nice what year is this?
>>24190898I've got a 99 250 with a 7.3, she's been decent to me, no issues with the engine aside from the dipstick tube thing but I fixed that, and other stuff on the 7.3 isn't too bad to work on at home. Everything else has just been suspension and steering work because none of it has been done in the life of the truck it seems.

>>24192627Thats what I hear, my old boss has a 92 7.3 that he loves, so I have been talking to him about it too
Years ago my wife basically forced( set up an entire sale behind my back ) me to sell my 95 f150 XLT. It had 4x4, AC, heat, started and ran perfect, interior was good condition, it just had rust and faded paint. Got it for an insane deal of 1500 cdn from family, fresh 5.7L I think dropped in by my father. Where I am it'd sell for nearly 3k with the right buyer. No my wife sold it for the same 1500 I got it for a month earlier. You could tell even my dad was crushed. He did an engine swap over a weekend cause he knew I loved the truck. And then I just had a shittier vehicle cause 1500 cdn gets you nothing anymore. Back when I was 16 you could find am abused prelude or something, and you would fucking adore it. Now it seems like the same shit boxes that were 1500 in like 2002 are still selling for 1500. I once had a boss say if you find a running car for 1k you did good, shiit, I've bought 240sx, civic hatchbacks for that price, that are triple the price 10 years later, I don't know if its just here. It's like the stereotypical high school kid cars haven't changed in 12 years or whatever, but now they cost even more? Why cause they are rarer? I had a mint 240sx I got for 2k, now my dad can't find a non running one for 2k and he'll he'd pay it. Besides the very few people are importing, rwd jap cars have gone extinct. Maybe it was degenerate generation of river/stoners. I know I totalled some nice old Jap cars being a stoned fuckin idiot. Kek, my buddy got a 2001 Celica when he turned 16, and he was the shit. One of the poor kids but somehow is Polak parents bought him this 9k Celica that was ridiculously riced out, even those Sid decals and shit. Mfer got so stoned he imagined a cat and crashed into the ditchThen the genius ran 10 blocks, and reported it stolen. Cop instantly caught him in a lie but didn't get any charges somehow lucky bastard. He literally had to right a judge an apology for his behavior.

95 F150 XL It's got the i6 and a five speed and that's it. It was my dad's until he couldn't use the clutch anymore. I've been upgrading small bits here and there, mostly cosmetic. I'm swapping out the rear painted bumper with a chrome one so they match. I just need to get an impact wrench to get the old one off first. We were only using it to pull the boat or getting out to the woods for a hunt but I'm using it for a daily driver now. It's too nice to let sit.
Great buy op those 300 i6s are indestructable. I bought this barely 2 months ago for less than 3 grand and its got zero rust, so far have given it new bilstein shocks, all new power steering, tie rods, ball joints, steering gear box from redhead, and soon plan to get the rear tank working and fixing the gauge. If anybody has a pdf manual for this gen ford truck that would save a lot of head aches.92 F150 with 4x4, 302 v8 and 4 speed auto
heres a pic of some of the work ive put into it so far. the transmission pan had a nasty leak that I fixed by taking it off, cleaning the surfaces and giving it a new rubber gasket and some rtv. gave me a good chance to get in there and make sure the fluid was good too. Sadly the previous owners left her to leak for many years so a lot of the under body around the transmission and engine is nasty. Power steering used to leak really bad too so that side underneath the car is nasty. thankfully all thats taken care now. Having good friends who let you use their driveway, share tools and offer help are a blessing to have.
>>24195354Looks good man, one of my favorite looking trucks, yet I can never get anyone to agree. I had a 95. I had no idea til recently but I guess my dad bought a 1990 f150 XLT single cab brand new, and then a month later my mom got knocked up and he traded it in for a van or some actually I think it was a sand coloured 1st gen Chrysler minivan and they drove that for like 20 fuckin years.
I wish where I lived it wasn't basically required for you to drive a truck. The used truck market here is sickening, anything under 10k is really really on its last legs. They'll have half a million kms, bald tires and a ton of rust. But ask 10k cause it's a truck with 4x4. And I'm in the market. Think I need to find a fixer upper to get a deal.
>>24195367thanks anon, im proud of it being my first truck though it isnt much. part of me wants a heavier duty version of the truck with a 7.3 diesel or something but I also know I dont need the extra expenses for what I'll be using my truck for. the obs fords are kino for utility and offroading, they look great and much better than the chevys of the same time period if you ask me

I bought this pickup with the intention of it being a beater for 2-3 years until the used market pulled its head out of it's ass and came back to normal. But the more I drive it, the more I like it and see that this something worth keeping in good condition. What are some preventative maintenance steps I can take to keep it running good and maybe run even better?
>>24197636I remember you! Glad the truck is working out for ya. If you live in or near the rust belt clean and coat the frame. as best you can. If you haven't flushed all the fluids yet, obviously that's a no brainer. Other than that, just drive it and fix things as they come up. If you have access to a compressor (60 gal minimum probably) buy a pic related gun and spray in your own bedliner. It will take you 1 afternoon and be 1/10 the cost.
>>24197636since yours is starting to get up there in mileage, think about when the last time your water pump and timing has been done (if it all)those are some of the biggest things to consider in trucks that are getting old as far as a healthy engine is concerned. but since its one of the bigger jobs if you want to keep the truck long term it may also be worth while to take the heads off and clean them up, doing valvetrain etc if not giving the engine new heads. Also an opportunity to make more power without going crazy.
Running boards are off to get cleaned and refurbished. Old starter is the culprit for the no-start - the bendix is trashed. Flex plate is in great shape comparatively. Should fire right up once replaced - can't wait to tootle around town and find more small issues to fix.
>>24197675Not him but in respect to bedliners I went with the herculiner option. No compressor need just roll it on.Sanded to rough it up and get the heavy mildew off. Clean with acetone and primer any bare metal surfaces. Rolled on the first coat then did the second coat the next day. Rolling the first coat was a bitch though so spraying might be easier but there are other options.

>>24197675>>24198810That doesn't look half bad, how does it hold up? I've seen a lot of liners that start fading after just a few months.>>24197979I was actually thinking about changing the water pump just because I've had one go bad before on a completely different vehicle.I've never messed around with an engine before so doing things like heads and valves is pretty intimating.
>>24199313Cool! I need to do something about mine, it sometimes fails to engage and goes WIZZZZZ at random. On the worst days it can take more than five tries before I can get it going. Shit's embarassing.
>>24177070>parked perfectly in my driveway, and promptly wouldn't start again.Once had a 92 f150 with the sexy nite appearance package, and for 4 years it would randomly do this no start after parking shit even after replacing virtually every part involved and stumping 3 mechanics. It ended up being the valve that switches tanks when you hit the switch (when it fails it will do this whenever it feels like it) leaving you in a parking lot punching the dash. If you have dual tanks check there first.

>>24199459Thanks for the tip, m8. Luckily - and I mean it - I only have one tank. I've found myself already slightly overwhelmed by the massive vacuum system in the Ford, and I know that any additional variables lead to (sometimes) unnecessary complexity. I pulled the starter today and the bendix is beyond its years. New one is in, it will rip tomorrow. Beautiful truck.

>>24200712The fabbot adapter plate for the ar5 worked nicely, looks like it's roughly the same length as the t5 I'm taking out.
>>24200720Didn't break any exhaust studs, ebay headers have plenty of clearance for the new wires, will wrap the headers and jacket the wires anyhow.
