basically just allows you to use the tow light harness

Why would such a thing be disabled by default or need a computer at all in the first place?
>>
>>23856615
so they could make it an optional extra
>>
after doing some googling it seems like the cable to connect to the computer would cost more than just paying the dealer
>>
>>23856657
nevermind, i found a chink pirated copy for $30 on aliexpress
>>
>>23856683
if anyone else wants to hack their newer VW it seems you can buy this instead of the $300 it costs to buy the legit one from eBay

The cars own wiring won't take the added load from the trailer lights, because the wires are so thin. You need basicly a relay box to bypass that.
Adding regular relays just don't work, because the rear lights are 21W bulbs driven with PWM signal, so that they resemble 5W bulbs. That's because they last longer and can be also used as brake lights or fog lights.

Also when plugging the trailer in, the trailer module sends information in the CAN gateway that there is a trailer attached. Now the car can inform you if your trailer has nonfunctional lights. Also the ESP system switches to a diffrent mode, because the car handling in emergency scenarios is diffrent with a trailer behind it.

The reason it is disabled by default is not getting errors of non-functioning trailer module, when your car doesn't even have one

I was of the understanding that VAG fixed the whole "german electronics" thing like 20 years ago. You're making me doubt this claim.

I have a hard time believing that VAG would be that stupid in 2016+. If OP is talking about the first gen Tiguan.... maybe?? Also, if you were talking about a Passat maybe, but I gotta believe they wouldn't sell a (pisspoor) SUV without the ability to pull a trailer, that comes with inferior wiring for the job from the factory.

I don't know shit about tiguans other than the newer ones are based on same platform as my car, so what do I know.
