Hey so I am looking at a used bike this weekend. It is a 2012 model ninja 300, has 10k miles which is very low. I am concerned this may have given it problems if it wasnt used. What should I ask about and inspect on the bike? this is my first motorcycle and im using it for getting to work and school. I asked about this in the last thread but am just trying to get multiple peoples input. Someone commented it is essentially new with that low mileage, but i am worried it might have issues from nit being used enough.
>>23855314>injection bike>having problems from lack of useyou should just buy a scooter if you're so concerned.
>>23855325i dont understand what youre trying to say. Everyone has to start out at some point with no knowledge of something they are new too. and no one wants to waste money on something that wont work or will be a liability.
>dealers dont have shitahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
>>23855340they somehow still have more than craigslist
>>23855314very low? my 2014 Forza had 4k miles and my 2007 SV650 had 6.5k miles.make sure paperwork matches (Vin #, license plate # on bike, registration, title), make sure it's cold when you get there and start it (touch muffler), note any cosmetic issues (curled levers, dents, scratches, blemishes), any leaks/stains on the ground underneath the bike/on the bike, check tire wear and date manufactured, check chain for any rusting/bad care, look at the front forks and see if they look nasty (leaking seals?), brake fluid in the reservoirs should be clear, brake lever should feel firm, wheel should face forward when handlebars are faced forward, open gas cap look inside for rust, check controls (turn signals, brake lights, hazards, horn, etc).
>>23855342thats not hard
>>23855346is a motorcycle different than a car in regards to how often it needs to be ran? i know that cars are supposed to be driven around the block a few times every so often even if all you did is keep the car in a garage, so i was wondering if the same logic applied.if i find any of these things like a chain that might need replacing or tires, is it worth mentioning this to lower the cost? >wheel should face forward when handlebars are faced forwardthis one made me kek but its so simple it makes sense to check..

>>23855277this bread is based
does a motorcycle need to be smogged like a car? How much is the paperwork and fees to complete a transfer of ownership in america? just wondering if the fees to fix up a bike and to transfer ownership are substantial enough, that it might make more sense to just buy new for piece of mind that it will just work for the first year.
>>23855361motorcycles in general have way less mileage put on than cars. 10k on a 2012 is around 1250 miles per year which is plenty for an average weekend rider. the battery could be weak if it isn't run for awhile. rubber parts may need to be replaced if they dry out/lose their pliability (think coolant hoses, fuel lines)... you can look up the owners manual for the service intervals, look up 2012 ninja 300 common problems/thinks to look out for/forums if you really wanna get familiar with it.yes, do everything you can to negotiate a lower price. tires can be like $150-$200 per wheel, and that's not including the $25-40~ labor for a shop to mount and balance each one.
>>23855394depends where you're at.
>>23855401CA atm
>>23855291stuff to adjust the carburetor and take it apart road side. And spare gloves
>>23855394look up your state/country regulations lol. California motorcycles do not need to be smogged, do not need to be inspected, only registered and insured. Texas for example requires ALL registered vehicles to undergo an inspection (brakes, lights, signals, exhaust decibels, etc). I paid $200 to transfer the title and register it off of non-op, and it's going to cost approx. $130 for next year's registration sticker, plus insurance.buy a $3k used bike, do the basic maintenance (oils, fluids, lubing, tires) and you shouldn't have any problems if you buy it from a legit person. ignore the tempting $2.5k bike where the owner only bothered to put 1/2 pics and 1 sentence accompanying it.
>>23855394Where I live there is literally 0 emissions. All you have to do is take the title to a title office to prove it's in your name and register it. Bike or car. Not living in a commie dystopia is great.
>>23855412I dunno but knowing California, yeah.BC gang still has street legal two strokes.
>>23855399i will be paying about 3500 for the ninja 300, and im not sure if that is a good price, since it is older, but it has suuch excellent or low mileage. it is also a bike in high demand, so i really have no idea what to expect going into it. If i am spending essentially 3500 on it, if i have to fix or replace anything, depending on the costs to transfer the vehicle (if there are any) and if i have to smog it or something (no idea what ca laws are) i am afraid that it might be closer to like 4k or 4500 in unexpected repairs and fixes.at that point i am wondering if it makes more sense to just spend 6-7k or whatever it is on a new ninja. I just need something cheap and reliable to get me to work and school which is a half hour commute.
>>23855416are there any good ways to keep cheap motorcycle insurance? I figure if i crash a motorcycle, the insurance doesnt matter anyway because the bike will probably be totaled and i would probably die from the crash so i dont fully understand it in the way i understand it for a car. If i take a motorcycle safety course before the license test, how much would that lower the insurance rate? because i am trying to save money and get to school and work cheap the low insurance is important to me for the next year or two.>. I paid $200 to transfer the title and register it off of non-op, and it's going to cost approx.does this mean you paid 200 to transfer it to a buyer? or that as a buyer you paid 200 for this paperwork? sucks that people have to pay so much to just sell or buy something from another person.
>>23855361Not really I mean it can sit for a month no problem, it might struggle a bit to start but it’ll be fine... more than a month and you’re looking at squared tyres, rotted cables and bad gas
>>238554272012 ninja 300 is the first year they were produced. $3.5k is quite steep, for reference my 2014 Honda 300 and 2007 SV650 were both $3k flat in mint condition with half the miles. If it's your first bike, get used. You won't feel bad about thrashing it, learning the clutch, etc... it's a fun experience.>>23855447you're paying so if you rear end someone, you cover the person you hit. Uninsured if someone turns left in front of you but they don't have insurance. Collision (not recommended if the bikes value is really low anyways) if you ride the bike into a guard rail. Comprehensive if someone throws your bike into a van. Roadside when your shit breaks down. MSF course should be taken by all riders, the discount on insurance isn't much. I paid $200 to transfer the title into my name and get a 2021 registration sticker.
>>23855277Anyone else just wear AirPods while they ride instead of spending a shit ton of money on a cardo?

>>23855548Under the seat seemed alright, the stuff wrong with it is mainly to do with under the tank (missing/loose/stripped bolts), coolant resevoir and shit. Heaps of fairing bolts missing too but I knew that. Should've just bought new. >>23855541Ninja 650, I'd say probably $1000 unless they find even more shit which wouldn't surprise me.

>>23855580Why did you crash your scout
>>23855570I know it might sound like I’m autistic (more than I really am) but if a bike is missing bolts it’s because the owner is careless about it, and it snowballs from thereA good owner would make sure to at least replace a fairing bolt, those things flap in the wind if they’re not tightened Considering it’s a Ninja 650 it shouldn’t be too pricy, unless it was actually seriously really fucking fucked
>>23855604Because I ride hard and live for the glory of Jesus Christ so I'm not afraid to die. You should try it as well.
>>23855412In CA. The laws are fucky, but basically if you are in state and buying an instate bike, no. >>23855896>>23855899the same used bikes asking 10k right now will be 3k again by late August. This is the worst time of year to buy a used bike.
is the ninja 300 even manufactured anymore? or was it replaced in the US with the 400? is it just the 250 or the 400 at this point, for a smalller ninja? I was going to see if there were any new ninja 300s at my dealership to price compare with a used 300.If i buy that ninja 300 for 3500, then add the 200 title transfer that is 3700, if it needs new tires and some fixing up because of some fun "surprises" in the first year or two, that might run like a grand...and that would be 4700. that is basically 5k at that point just for a used 300.At that point wouldnt it make more sense to just buy a new 300? if i am spending 5k....i want it to simply work. I dont want to learn how to fix the bike while im still learning to drive the thing.
>>23855903i cant wait until august. maybe i will just buy another bike in august then and resell it the next year at a profit to make the difference up. or keep that bike and sell the one i get now. I need a vehicle for work and school, dont have the luxury to wait unfortunately.

People outgrow them fast.if you need to spend $1k or even $500 fixing a used bike you should just buy a different one. >>23855926>Get it if you want to jump iti hop a lot of curbs and ride dirt roads and service roads, but please, tell me more about what i need

>>23855942im not really trying to flip the bikes to make a cheap dollar, it just seemed like it might be economical here to get a bike now and a bike later if the prices really deviate to such a degree. if i got a good enough deal i suppose i could just have two. it never hurts to have a back up vehicle if you need to get to work or school. so in theory i could sit on it for a while if i wanted to sell one. if have two bikes i could maybe get a feel for which one i like most. just spitballing at this point.

Is removing the speed limiter on bikes going to damage the engine? "They are limited to 180 kmh or 112 mph. This is a hard coded limit done by the ecu" This is a forum post for a Triumph Bobber, it seems extremely weird to limit it to such a slow speed unless they are trying to protect the engine or something
>>23856600You called, great success They might sweet talk you into buying something else
>>23856617No. Only if the bike has an electronic rev limiter that is based on engine rpm, not speed. If the bobber is full throttle at 112 mph and turning like 5k rpm in top gear it can be removed safely.Triumphs are now made in thailand, not air cooled, and finally, are speed limiting bikes.Kinda cucked imo.

You could bring someone knowledgable too. I am way more critical of someone else's purchase(no emotions). Then if I bought it.
>>23856637168 is fast enough that it isn't actually an issue unless you are on track. I have gone past 112mph passing a string of cars, and would not like hitting a speed limiter.Maybe check motorcycle specs.zaThey have decent specs and reviews on each bike which might talk about a speed limiter. Otherwise check forums if you are serious. As long as the bike is unlimited up to around 130mph I would be alright.
>>23856637Note that what the speedo says is not the always the truthEvery liter peter will stop counting at 300kmh, but if you look up your speed with a GPS you'll discover it's a wink wink kind of limit
>>23856627It's a long list. Let's go over it front to back.Front wheel, wiggle to see if there's play in the bearings, inspect rotors and calipers to see if they look like absolute shit, check front forks for leaks or damage, hold front brake and push down on them a bit to get a feel for them. Set up bike on center stand and grab both forks and move back and forth for headstock bearing play.Handlebars, check that they're straight and alligned with the front wheel, check all buttons and controls that they work and are in good conditon. Check sides for signs of a fall. Check throttle/clutch cables for feel and visually. Gas tank. Check for scratches dents and cracks, along with fairings if any. Fairings often crack at the bolts. Check gas cap, that it opens and closes right, that it's not discolored as hell, that there's no gas leaking by the petcock if there is one. Engine. Check for leaks and discoloration. Grab hoses and check if they're brittle. Check the drain plug for weeping, check carbs or injectors for fuel leaking, check gaskets for weeping, check overall condition of it. Check both brakes, for fuid color, lever feel, possible leaks.Check the rear wheel much like the front. Also move sprocket to check for worn cush drives, check condition of the chain. Check exhausts front to back for rust and or loose rattly bits inside. Check that all lights and blinkers work right. Check that horn works right. Take for short ride. Let go of handlebars to see if the bike tracks straight. Go on a big road and accelerate hard through all the gears to check for clutch slipping and that all gears engage correctly and no selector forks are damaged. A lot of it comes down to feel and experience. That's why it's always best to go to a mechanic who works on that make of bikes to check it out. They know where they're prone for failure as well as how a good one is supposed to feel.
>>23856654>but if you look up your speed with a GPS you'll discover it's a wink wink kind of limitInteresting, can you show me some examples?
>>23855939Oh I've been waiting for this. Thanks for reminding me.
>>23856662https://youtu.be/Xb3NqyTVgYMI know for sure the R1 does this as well. The Panigale straight up shows 3 dashes once you hit 300 as if to say "fuck it m8"
>>23855367>BMW
When the 1st gen Busa came out with a top speed of over 300kph there was a bit of a media scare about how dangerous bikes were becoming. The industry, fearing regulations by governments, unofficially made an agreement to not go over that ever again because it's better to set your own terms and limits than have a government do it for you. Since then more powerful and faster bikes have come out but since fuel injection is the standard now, compared to then where only some bikes had it, limiting is very easy. You wring the throttle out at top gear and the bike just stops revving at some point, despite not being in the redline yet. So for these faster and more powerful bikes the top speed is rarely a selling point like it is with cars. Some may go over the limit with some speedo shenanigans but generally speaking they just keep them around the 300kph area on purpose.
>>23856694Do you think they’ll eventually lift the limit because of electric bikes?
>>23856711You do understand that electric bikes are like the opposite of normal engines right? They make MEGA power at the bottom and end up making less up top. I am still waiting for someone to setup a multi speed electric bike so we could reach faster speeds. I guess they could just run a SUPER tall gear and maybe get there. This is why electric vehicles do better in city compared to highway.
>>23856711Very unlikely, but it doesn't matter much. I mean taking your busa to 300 is sort of an event, you have to plan it out, go out to a road you know that can support it, hope there won't be many cars there and then go for it for a minute or two and then that's that. Realistically top speed matters very little and even for track it has to be a very big one for top speed to make a difference.
>>23856721And when electric bikes reach higher speeds would they lift the limit?
tes
>>23856721>gearing an electric engineNo, electric engines are as good as they can get, gearing is a system used to squeeze more efficiency out of ICE.The problem with electric is power storage. A powerful engine capable of hitting high speed would require tons of weight in batteries that would require more power that would require more weight ecc.Battery capacity and charge speed are the reasons EV's are still a joke, but if a new type of lightweight electric storage came out tomorrow they would take over the market in a month
finally she is mine. poobike revolution incoming
>>23856749They don't have a wide enough rev range and it would do wonders for their distance range so it's not actually a bad idea
>>23856756The odour rises...
>>23856759This is not how it worksPut aside that electric engines have a higher rev range, the point is that the torque is constant on all of it.So if you have an ebike that can hit 200kmh it has the same torque at 1kmh, you can't transfer that upwards, you'd only lose energy
>>23856749They could do a two speed planetary setup like in drills and shit. Would be complex but might work.>>23856756>prius and toyota brz passes you IRLStill a cool bike.
>>23856778So stuff like two speed drills are for the users sake then? So we would need higher output batteries that could sustain the motor spinning at whateverthefuck speed it needs to go? If that's the case then electric bikes will just get faster as fancier batteries come out, and then they will be speed limited by nannies again.
>>23856756Nice
>>23856786Yes, exactly. The key is power density: ev's lose because gas has 100 times more Jauls/g, so if you need to go faster caveman dump more explosion fluidA zero / tesla would need to triple the weight nullifying the gains
>>23856805Damn. Not entirely surprised but that's good to know.Well I will be waiting to see if something interesting comes out. Dad's looking at retrofitting one of our bikes with a crank mounted electric motor. The fact that we can legally go on bike trails is going to be cool.

>>23856829huh the suzuki actually has a 1055mm seat height. Maybe this is the bike for non manlets
>>23856829There's no wrong option here really but 2 of them are 2 cyl and the other 2 are 4 cyl and that's two very different styles.Z650 is a fucking solid bike and with better handling than the MT (though that's up to debate for some). MT has a better and more fun engine with a bit more power. MT is definitely the more popular option in recent years. The Honda and Zuki are 4 cyl, that means more power and more maintenance and fuel costs. Zuki is better performing, Honda is newer and there's the question of styling which is up to you.Test ride as many as you can get your hands on or ideally all 4
>>23856842What kind of extra maintenance we talking about?>>23856838Its also the only one I haven't tried sitting on yet, hm>>23856835Yeah they're all cool and make me excited
>>238568484cyl vs 2cyl maintenanceThe 4cyl will have. More expensive valve checks, possibly more frequent(if it's higher tuned engine), worse mpg, more things that "could" go wrong, wider and heavier bike. That's about it. I would do 4cyl or mt07. Z650 sounds like a nice bike but I wouldn't go with it.
>>23856838>1055 mm seatheightMaybe for the pillion, lol
>>23856853Doesn't the Z650 have the most tech out of all of them and isn't it the cheapest?I'd take the CB650R, to be honest.
>>23856856yeah i looked it up and its 820stupid indian source.Still the tallest of the 4
>>23856848Quantities and costs go up across the board. More cylinders, a bigger engine. Needs more oil, needs more parkplugs, has more valves, more throttle bodies etc. Also overall as a higher performance bike it costs more overall, not just on fuel. Tires, sprockets, brake pads, all are more expensive because they're higher performance components.

no wrencher here: How hard is it to change your oil? I've never done it before on a car or bike, but I checked yesterday and I'm almost completely out on my bike. I figure I should learn how to do it myself and it seems easy enough. Take the filter off, drain the oil, then put the filter and plug back and top up the oil. just need to go out and get myself a new filter and a litre of the right oil. Also is there a best kind of oil to get or is it bike specific? Also what do you do with the old oil, take I take it to an auto shop in like a Mason jar and have them recycle it?
>>23856950You figured out everything, you only need to do it once to dispel your wrenchlet fearAs for the waste, google it, there has to be a disposal center in your proximity. Or dump it into the ocean
>>23856950Better check the manual for right viscosity grade oil or if you don't care just put in olive oil.
>>23856950>what do you do with the old oilBurn in a bonfire or spill it on the groundI've also washed some down from the toilet but it took quite some time to get it all gone
>>23856950Stupid easyCheck what oil your bike needs, how much for an oil+filter change, get a drain pan, have the right tools, and fill the oil up slowly (easy to overfill, so it’s better to take it slow than to have to pull your drainplug again)
>>23856950>Also what do you do with the old oil, take I take it to an auto shop in like a Mason jar and have them recycle it?If you are based you will do this in a walmart parking lot or the side of the road and just shart out the old oil onto the ground.
>>23856950I also highly recommend a funnel and having some rags on hand in case you spill
>>23856950did you check with the engine cold?
>>23856829From value perspective the MT07 wins. It’s the cheapest of the three and will provide the most smiles per mile. The Kawi has better tech and the tank is more ergonomic than the MT but the engine isn’t as fun plus it sounds like a leaf blower. The MT with an aftermarket exhaust is easy the best sounding bike for the money on the market. https://youtu.be/QLPBK1U5LO0
>>23856860The only tech the z650 has is an admittedly nice tft display. Is still has no ride modes or traction control. It also doesn’t come standard with dual channel ABS which is a $500 option. >>23857480>>23857453>>23857451>>23857461ill look em up...is it worth trying them on in person? with covid idk if shops are even letting people try gear on. I hear you have to test fit a helmet for like 10 minutes to know for sure how it fits.
>>23857471eh that's not too bad, it's basic previous owner memeswe had shit like that in the store so often when people do either their own maintenance or just bought the bikes and bring them in for the first servicethe calls they did are basically reassuring that you know what's going on, and most likely didn't charge extra for that stuff like clipping the fuel line back in again and replacing stripped screws is just the extra for the new screw
>>23857496what you can try is if you bring your own Baklava, maybe they let you try on (if they are even open). maybe give them a call.Helmets are something you want to try on in person.
>>23857394>>23857411And suzuki is still doing it on the vstrom, at least the 650, I'll wire in my own switch at some point but it's fucking stupid.
>>23857397this sounds exactly like that "mod" shitters are doing where they drill a hole in the stock exhaust.
>>23857496Depends on where you are, call them and find out. You can measure yourself by running string above your eyebrows and ears to get your circumference but you need to use a mirror or selfie to determine headshape between round, long oval or intermediate oval.

>>23855314It's probably fine. Observe it start from cold. (That's important as an engine may run like shit until it warms up or smoke due to wear then cease when warm, but at 7K that's unlikely.)Download a factory service manual (should be easy to find for free via Ninja forums or the Carl Salter site may have one) and get an idea of what to inspect in conjunction with asking Ninja gurus on Ninja fora.Know what worn chains and sprockets and tires look like. Have an idea what your local price range is but don't get too anal about driving the price down if the condition is good.It would be a very good idea if everyone reading this studied what to inspect long before going to buy a bike/car/female because it's much easier than learning at the last moment if not mechanically inclined. >>23855427The difference isn't much so why not buy new? A few grand over a few years of ownership is nothing and $7K isn't real money any more.
>>23857700>$7K isn't real money any morehuh
>>23855792The wood portion slooks like a mockup since the rest appears unfinished. Noob metalworkers and hobbyists familiar with wood often use it for mockups. The rig is custom but gives an idea how to do a nice one. I wouldn't use a trailer if it were free but to each their own.
>>23855946http://v4musclebike.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1563&highlight=manuals may have something but registering is required to view. They should be able to answer your question specifically and someone may have a used signal for cheap.Get familiar with forums and make an effort to get the factory Honda service manual as they're excellent books. Haynes will do but they often miss useful content and you can never have too much tech data so get gud at finding it online.Parts vendor sites are good sources of exploded views (as is your Honda shop if they've not shitcanned their old microfiche).
>>23856950If you have never turned a wrench in something like a motorcycle, get thyself a torque wrench so you can learn "feel" for fasteners. Motorcycles are rather delicate and you do not want to damage drain plug threads. Get a factory service manual, you can usually find them for download. Failure to have tech data is a common avoidable mistake.>my bikeAlways refer by year, make and model because there may be something we know you don't. They're not all identical. When reinstalling drain plugs start the plug by finger. Place plug in hole and turn slowly COUNTER-clockwise until you feel the plug drop into engagement with the threads, then turn clockwise by finger until you cannot go further then finish with a wrench. Fasteners are not intuitive, they just seem that way. Oil changes aren't hard and learning can be the beginning of a life of saving money on maintenance while ensuring no one fucks up your machine.
>>23855277Thoughts on the tw200 as a first bike? I'd like to use it as a utility vehicle, hauling deer out of the woods and transporting equipment, as well as some trail riding. I like that they're cheap and can take a beating, and it's a big plus that it's street legal so I can ease my way into that type of riding as well.
>>23857336They’re common because they’re a very good value. I’ll never understand the mentality some people have where they think that if they buy “this” mass produced bike they’ll be more unique than I’d they buy “that” mass produced bike. At the end of the day, unless you’re having a bike custom made for you, every bike is common because the manufacturer will make thousands and thousands and thousands of them every single year.
