RagtopBeetle
We didn't deserve such a good car.I want one someday but i am scared of wrenching on it myself, what do? my Alfa doesn't breakdown as much as beetle stories say.
>>23619774I've been dailying a beetle since December 2018. This year I switched to a Karmann Ghia but same drivetrain. If you have a decent motor and everything is put together right and in decent shape you will have minimal issues
>>23619891Karmann Ghia are the next step after i get acquainted with a beetle.Do you feel for the lack of power? Ever had the manu-matic model?
>>23619496I want one. Idk why, but I do. Maybe I'll get a Baja one day to take off-roading.
>>23619915Ain't no lack of power here, I'm running a 1904cc engine. I had it bored and stroked 5mm each to bring the displacement up, a 110 cam, bigger intake and exhaust valves, heavy springs, dual 2bbl webers, 1.5 inch exhaust, modern oil filtration, 1.5qt deep sump, and an 010 mechanical distributor. A stock 1600dp will keep up with traffic fine though, I've driven 6 hours each way on a road trip with a stock 1600 and it was fine.
>>23619932You want one because they're fucking sick, duh.
>>23619945i envy you so bad. i've had probably 10 cars by now and was always too afraid of a beetle, even though it was my dream car in high school.
>>23619972>>23619745That's my beetle, both cars are orange. I bought it from a pawn shop near me on a whim after being interested in them for a while. I ended up swapping the motor because it had massive crankcase pressure, but other than that I pretty much did normal stuff like going through the brakes, new tires, transaxle fluid, wheel bearings, etc. Everything is pretty simple and parts are everywhere, but you will have weird little things happen and you don't really get any modern amenities. The beetle is out in the barn waiting for me to finish assembling a 1600 for it and install it.
Yesssss a beetle thread! Here is the only beetle I saw in japan. You can still see it in google maps just type in Nakanishi Peanuts
Also here is my 2003 Beetle Sedan
Here is another angle
I love the sounds these things make.
Utterly based thread. Do you fellas recommend one as wrenching practice? I've been thinking of getting one and due to the fact that they're so simple, I'd want to do all the work on them myself.
>>23620887If you can get a cheap one, I guess, but it would probably be 99% shit and you'd need to replace everything. Just because they're old and shit, doesn't mean replacement parts are cheap.
>>23620889money is not an issue. I can set aside a budget of 3-4k to work on it.
>>23620899It's your money, do whatever you want. Good luck with the budget.
Are the new ones any food? I feel like driving a cabriolet sometimes when i see it.
>>23620938It's soulless retro crap and the engine is in the wrong place.
>>23621063They're also only like 4000lbs.
>>23620889It's the most produced car in the world and pretty much everything is being reproduced, parts are cheap and available.>>23620887They're pretty easy, I'd say go for it. If the motor is decent and the wiring isn't hacked up the only other major thing you might have to go through is the brakes and suspension. I paid $1,500 for my beetle.
>>23620461These are Brazilian, right?>>23620889Hold up, the parts are expensive? The fuck?>>23620938It's a cute modern car, take it for what it is
Bouncy beetle
Lovely

childhood icon, the #53, Herbie
>>23619774Dude.4 bolts and a floor jack to swap the engine.Electrical harness is like 7 wires and 2 switches.I have an R/C car thats more complicated.
>>23619496My dad's Beetle exploded
>>23621421Parts are not expensive.
>>23621535RIP.
>>23622316I don't have a space where to do that stuff, and the most i've done to my car is change cabin and air filter.>>23622345My dad's beetle caught fire.
https://youtu.be/iWVS2MmqdZMThis guy drives his sick green beetle around close to where I live. I haven't seen him on the streets yet but he's got a lot of good content.
>>23623095I can also recommend this video by him:https://youtu.be/xeWPGAxcrSk
>>23623092they're orange tho
>>23620938>VW>making anything good
>>23620456Nice pole
>>23619496produced for 65 years the last original beetle rolled of the assembly line in 2003
>>23623271Why they call it a sedan? isn't it a hatchback? or a coupe? it ain't got 4 doors.
>>23623282>isn't it a hatchback? You realize the engine is in the back, right? Maybe one could call it a hatchfront?
>>23622884I think fires generally only happen in these if the fuel lines go bad, and that is like 30 minutes of work to redo. It could also happen if the fan stops, but you should see the generator light if that happens.
>>23621421Mexican
>same engine and longer chassis from the beetle>tuned from factory from 50hp to face melting 80hp depending on what you wanted>even lighter than the beetle due to fiberglass bodyIt was hot shit in Brazil back in the 70's.
>>23626007Cool, almost looks as nice as a TVR.
Everyone says I’m just a beetle, can I join the thread?
for an amateur, is changing an altenator alot of work? im poor
>>23626864No
>>23626007Except the beetle is actually 50 pounds lighter. Pumas are cool though.
>>23627033Because the Puma chassis is from the Brasilia, but the fiber body makes for it.
>>23627013where to start? you need to put on the belt too right?
>>23627132Take off the belt with a screwdriver and wrench. Loosen the alternator strap. Remove the 4 fan screws. Slide the strap back so the alternator can come up. Pull forward to remove the fan from the shroud. Lift the alternator out of the engine bay.
>>23627124It's a karmann ghia chassis.
>>23627173It's the Type 3 chassis anon, it was used on everything from a Brasilia, Kombi to a Karmann Ghia.
>>23627178No. The karmann ghia is a wider beetle chassis, the brasilia is based on a Ghia chassis, and the type 3 is different from the Ghia and beetle chassis.
>>23627178>>23627224
>>23627227
>>23627178And the type 2 van definitely doesn't use a sedan chassis, it has its own unique design.

what a cute little bug
>>23623231Red, yellow and orange are all just various shades of brown.
>>23627564So beautiful, were the trunks on the beetles actually useful for long trips?
>>23628424Hardly. You had some space behind the back seat rest, enough for a small child to sit in. You could get away with putting a suitcase under the front hood.
>>23628431This. Although I haven't seen the frunk of a Super Beetle, they were supposed to be bigger because they had McPherson struts.
"This VW Beetle ended up in a scrap press and the resulting 1,200 kg scrap metal cube was supposed to be melted down for producing raw steel. Now it is a museum item. Today, junk cars are cut into small pieces, which are easier to handle. Before cutting, non-steel components like rubber parts, the interior, aluminum parts etc. are removed and handled separately. At the times when the complete cars were pressed into such cubes the non-steel components made up the slag that was removed after melting. Only by scrapping the number of old cars is reduced which raises the value of the remaining ones."
>>23628825I hate Germany so much.
>>23619945Poor man's porches atleast that's what I always heard my pos stepdad call them.
>>23625192Battery under the rear seat, not in a sealed compartment.Battery shorts out on the rear seat, sparks and catches the seat padding on fire.
>>23627164will attempt, i tried changing the starter and felt like there was no room to manuver the wrnching tools, tried removing a component undernesath and realize the screw was stripped so had no alterntive
>>23625192it was back in the early 90's or late 80's when he had it, maybe that issue wasn't very well documented back then. After that his Suzuki Swift got smahed so hard the backseats were on the passenger section, luckily he made it alive without a scratch. Then he wiped his ass on a bike. Then he bought a supra mk3 and had it for a bit, then a mercedes wagon who made him go kapoot due to high cost of parts (i think it was an 89 model). He didn't really have a lot of luck with cars before, lol.
>>23629605Oh, yeah, forgot about that one. Could be solved with a garbage bag or not letting fat people sit in the back.
>tfw 7 months later and still waiting on it to come back from the shopI have a literal entire bedroom of new or restored parts just waiting it to get painted. Just need to finish restoring the steering column, reupholster the seats, and get new door cards in the meanwhile.
>>23631382If my Ghia was at a shop for 7 months I would tell them I'm picking it up to take somewhere else and not paying them shit
>>23631382Wtf are they doing to the car that takes 7 months?
>>23630685Post your car
>>23629605Literally just a piece of rubber over the battery solves this. Most fires are caused by people who don't bother to understand the car.
>>23631382Is that your Ghia before going in for seven months? It doesn't look like it needs to be painted.
