The re-animated corpse of /CCG/ - Classic Car General

Skinwalker edition

>Cars are considered "classic" at 25 years old, but a vehicle really needs that certain something to be classic.
>Everybody has their own taste, but some tastes are wrong. If you aren't sure if your car is classic or not, it's not.
>Must treat women like shit
>US, Euro, Jap, or whatever.
>HOWEVER, your Honda Miata doesn't count. 80s+ Hondas are better suited for their own generals as well. Everything else is fair game.
>Post your classic, your work on it, your hackery, and get advice.
>Any and all discussion about classics welcome, but may not necessarily generate responses; don't get butthurt.
>Period correct performance > cosmetics.
>Metal > plastic.
>Classic shitbox > modern shitbox.
>It's required to use RTV. Ignore the haters.
>JBweld can fix anything
>If you see rust there is more.
>Rust and bodywork are the most difficult thing to repair.
>Electrical work is difficult until you stop reading forum posts and buy a multimeter.
>Low oil pressure? Worn mains and rod bearings. Use lucas and 15W40 until you afford a rebuild.
>You're never going to finish that engine swap, stop LARPing
>Do NOT buy a classic and plan to pay someone to work on it. You need to be able to do 90% or more of the work or you will go broke.
>You will spend twice your budget, unless you have years of experience. If the salty old hands agree, it's true.
>Never be a jogger
>Taking your car to a shop for ANYTHING is gay. Unless its my shop and you pay me
>No one cares about your MPG
>99% of boomers are cancer
>Nothing is as easy as it seems
>FUCK discord
>Don't project
>Post car or GTFO
>If someone posts anything without a trip it's coastie
>>
Had to pull the transmission on the Ranchero to replace the pump gaskets.

>No, I call them Nazis.
Oof more buzz words. How can you attempt to attribute a political ideology to someone based on historical skepticism?
And before you say "It's the most documented genocide in history!", I'll just let you know that there are 0 (zero) German documents or intercepted communications (Even though they never knew we broke their code) that back up the genocide narrative.
And before you say "They destroyed them all!", keep in mind we have documents on human experimentation (including on children), the hollow earth, vril1, and heinous war crimes committed. But not a single one on the genocide.

The Soviets went out of their way to falsify information to back up the genocide story.
The allies tortured officers into making false confessions. Yes, there are people who hung for crimes they admitted to that we now freely admit never happened.
If you go to the Holocaust museum today you'll still find a discredit poorly made video showing a "gas chamber". Where a photo of a vehicle was painted (unphotorealistically) to show the exhaust mating with a building. And there is no parallax in the shot, it's a camera panning over a photo. Then footage of some naked malnourished men in a building with no roof. The narration claims that they were gassed there that day by that car.

I'm not saying you want to be a second class citizen in a country.
I'm not saying you want to be rounded up into camps, have your possessions seized, and be forced remigrate.
I'm not saying there wasn't mistreatment and murder going on.
I am saying there was never an official order to genocide the Jews.
I am saying less than 4 million Jews died at Auschwitz.

I went back to the wagon springs in the rear, might drop down to stock, undecided.

Hoping that as winter goes on some people will clear out their garages and I might find a cheap set of 15x15 rims, maybe with tires, to throw on rear with some 15x4s in the front.

Why? When you dont make any power. You could probably put like 185s in the rear and it wouldnt spin then
>>
>>23226116
Because I want to. And my car makes enough power to smoke the drag tires I have on it with 3.08s, a regear and more engine work will put me in an even better spot.

seriously needs new tires before i do any decent driving with it. They don't show any visible wear or dry rotting but the fronts are literally 13 years old and the rears are 7, i do not trust that shit not to blow on the highway or otherwise fuck up

looks cool with the led bulbs in the headlights and switchback led turn signals though
>>

imo used tires are fine as long as you verify
>visually, no cracks or dry rotting or repairs
>treadwear is above 80%

the trick is finding used tires that fit all those boxes, but you generally get them at like 30% of their new cost or less

I'm loosely considering buying a corvair from a family friend. My only car is a truck and it'd be nice to have a car that got decent fuel economy. The idea of driving around a classic car seems nice. It'd primarily be used for flat level highway cruising aside from one massive hill I have to climb regularly. My considerations are the car has a 2 speed auto trans which I can only imagine will give awful fuel economy and the car is in somewhat rough shape and hasn't run in a few years. Any advice or anecdotes on what I can expect from a corvair

Ive always wanted a classic american car. ive been driving 80s japanese cars for the last 4 years. pic related. I was looking at either a chevy nova 69-72 or a ford maverick any of the years. I like the small coupe style of these two which would you take and why? also been looking for a 240z but those are really uncommon in my area so I wouldnt be able to get one unless I found a great deal.

I've been fighting radiator failure in my 1970.
Starts splitting the seam where the side tank meets the flat part that the core goes into.
Solder the seam at the failure but only where it's leaking.
Good for a short while then the seam starts splitting further down.
Do solder repair down entire seam.
Good for a short while, then the repair seam starts to crack - it's not thick enough.
Solder it better - will certainly hold now.
Seam starts to fail around the tube the upper hose attaches to.
Solder all around the upper radiator hose inlet.
Good for a short while, starts to leak around where the core meets the side tank.
It just won't end..

Granted it's not a large sample size, but even with a light coupe I wouldn't expect better than low to mid 20s highway. Keep in mind as well that these are averages where we don't know how much driving was done on the highway vs in town.

drums are just fine if you're not racing. i guess they might fade down a massive mountain pass too.
drums actually have more stopping power than disks because the surface area is massive. they just fade way quicker
>>
>>23237953
They're harder to modulate too due to the servo action which makes them impractical to use for racing

Bought this guy for $2000 (16v twin cam 1988 944S) not running and sitting under a tree on Sunday. Previous owner didn't know what was wrong with it and had bought it from another guy who also didn't know what was wrong with it and it sat in a garage for a year. Got it running the same day and found out it was just fouled injectors, HUGE vacuum leaks (multiple parts of the vacuum system totally disconnected from each other) and bad plugs.

Still got a leaky non-working sunroof (bad relay), badly peeling engine paint, and seized front right caliper but it's all easy stuff to fix. Got a new battery and $200 in replacement hoses/seals/gaskets coming and flushed the oil and coolant systems. Also found a set of brembo front calipers for $150 on eBay.

I was expecting a blown head gasket or stuck valves but it actually runs better than my tuned up modified 944S (1987).

I should start buying these things up, fixing them and shoving them in a heated garage for the inevitable day when the Japanese market is completely dried up. Still want a 80s quattro tho.

Any cheap ways to get the fuel economy up on these things? I'm being offered $500 for a corvair that had nothing wrong with it when it was parked. If I could get into the 30s for mpg I'd be sold. It's a 68 and I love the way it looks. Anything is an improvement over about 14mpg with the truck though. If not I'll probably just get a used civic

Well I have a lot of other things to sort, but I dunno. You can't really make power with the Slant 4. 150hp maxish? Maybe Ill put on a real set of SU's?
>>
>>23240483
You may be able to get the carbs running a bit leaner? Tune the things for economy instead of performance? But welcome to dieseling hell.
>>
>>23240483
>>23240851
Lean means hot, on an air cooled engine that will kill it. If you put fuel injection on it and have it tuned it should do a little better, but at the end of the day it's an old carbureted 6 cylinder. Also keep in mind that those averages don't specify highway vs in town miles, or how heavy the driver's foot was. But if you want something fuel efficient, cheap, and reliable just get a Honda or Toyota from the early 2000s. It will probably be better than the truck but it's still a car from the 60s.
>>
>>23240831
Forget SUs, put a set of webers on it, and if you do that headers and exhaust so it can flow out as well as in. I'd probably get the head reworked, and do a cam as well. Maybe shave it a little to raise compression, then it should drive a lot better.
>>
>>23241678
>on an air cooled engine that will kill it.
Fuck fair
>>23241703
SUs are perfect through
I am looking into exhaust/headers just so I can pull the smog pump
My parts guy might have a used one he mentioned still on the cheap
>>
>>23241860
You can fine tune a weber better than an SU, if they're both set up as best they can be a properly sized weber will give more crisp throttle response and better power. It all depends on what else you do to the engine. I would put in oversized pistons, port and polish the head, cam it, do heavy high rev springs, and put headers on it. With all that work it's going to flow much better and could take advantage of a pair of webers. If you're going to leave it stock the SUs will work fine and be easier to tune. Also there's a company in Ohio that sells performance parts for your car you know.
http://www.tsimportedautomotive.com/tr7_tr8.html
>>
>>23241914
I just won't get that involved(probably)
and oh trust me I know
>>
Shut the fuck up faggot.
>>
>>23240483
You could get an O2 sensor gauge and regularly make sure it's tuned properly, fuel injection could do this for you but it's very expensive. If you want a cool car, go for it idk how many miles you drive but 6mpg might make a big difference, if you want something really fuel efficient, go with the Civic.
>>
>>23241937
Light cars with extra power are pretty fun
>>
>>23242937
Im sure but I just want to enjoy it for a bit and get to fixing up the various broken bits and learn about wrenching more before I dive into the engine.
Though
>10-15% gain on average from porting the heads
>>
>>23243224
10-15% gains are only small on shitty british cars on the other hand porting heads isn't that hard though just match to the gaskets. Probably not worth doing until you have some other reason to take apart engine like blown head gasket
>>
>>23243252
Whoops thought this was about the tr7 still applies though
>>
>>23243252
Well did (((shave))) the intake down a bit to match the gasket when the intake was off. And yeah bong car castings are so shit gains at least on the porting front are nice
>>
>>23243271
The head should be pretty easy to remove. Buy the carbs and exhaust first to bolt on and drive but get a cam when you have the extra money, they're only $145. When you have that and a little more saved up and you've driven it a bit and know the motor is good, pull the head. If you want to save some cash you can get someone to take the valves out, then do the porting yourself, there's probably information online. Then take it back to have them do a 3 angle valve job and clean and reassemble the head. You might also find a way to get the valves out at home to save more money. If you have the cash you can just get a machine shop to do everything. If you do it that way you can spread it out while you still fix the little things that it needs as well.
>>
>>23243252
>porting heads isn't that hard though just match to the gaskets
Uh, no. Gasket-matching has ruined a lot of heads. What you're after is matching the size and location of the intake and head ports which is a different matter. See, what you get when you gasket match is a port that goes narrow-wide-narrow, or, more properly small volume-large volume-small volume. That larger volume area causes the air to slow down and, in the case of carbureted engines, for the fuel to fall out of suspension.
>>
>>23243378
Not them but I'm fixing to build a motor with my bro. He does it for a living but I've been trying to understand enough so he doesn't sound like he's speaking Chinese trying to teach me. Where would one look into intake velocity more in detail? Perhaps even something that talks about tuning the intake. Also, I'll be using a Holley efi, is it less critical with fuel injection as far as fuel suspension?
>>
>>23243410
I'd just Google it and see what you can find
>>
>>23243410
Well, you wouldn't have to worry about fuel with a multiparty but a change in volume will affect pulse tuning of the intake charge.

As for study, a good start would be anything written by David Vizard.
>>
>>23243876
Google is amazing for ultra specific things like how do I reset my oil light 08 ranger or some shit, and ultra broad understandings like how does a 2 stroke work. It starts to lose its usefulness when you're in this area in my experience where I want to do my best to understand all physics involved.

So I have a 1984 Caprice Classic with one tiny annoyance: The high beams only work on one side. Like, I click the switch, the low beam turns off on the driver side and the high beam comes on, but the passenger side the low beam just remains on.

Also, when the headlights are on the right blinker indicator comes on and the front right marker lamp doesn't come on, but I'm somewhat assuming it's some low-tech way of telling me the part of the marker lamp that does parking lights is out.

My friend had a Bronco II, it was pretty okayish. I liked the body style.
>>
>>23247957
I have a bit of respect for anything bearing the Bronco nameplate, but I've heard enough bad things about the Bronco II to not like them. The Bronco was built on an F-150 platform, where the Bronco II was built on the Ranger platform. I have heard that they are EXTREMELY tippy. I'd never take my truck to do donuts, but the Bronco II seems to have been even more prone to roll-overs. Slimmer wheelbase, plus a higher center of gravity. Seems it was built to tip over for any reason. My truck feels solid, but even still I'd be concerned about it tipping in certain circumstances. Plus, the Bronco II never came with a V8. RIP.
>>
>>23247991
My dad had a bronco II as his "first" car.
>Spoiler alert, it was a shiney PoS that broke down all the time.
One of the first dates with my mom, it crapped out and they had to walk 5 miles back to his house. On another date they were going up a drainage ditch for some reason and it tipped back onto the tailgate and slid down before falling on its side. Luckily it was all mud so no damage.
>>
>>23248032
That... sounds about right for a Bronco II. Even though my Bronco is an enormous turd that needs a bunch of work, I still feel way more secure in it than I would in a perfect condition Bronco II. It's essentially just an F-150 with a different body. Mechanically, it's dead simple, and I can repair literally anything on it with some sockets and a decent wrench. Mind, mine needs a new engine built and dropped in at some point, but even with 0 oil pressure at hot idle, the thing keeps kicking along. Hardly gives a fuck. Love this old bastard.
>>
>>23248073
Well the B2 is based off the old ranger which everyone swears is bullet proof; but that didn't stop it from constantly breaking down and even eating a brand new exhaust set up. My dad just has terrible luck with american vehicles - he next bought a 93 cherokee brand new and sold it with less than 70k miles cause it spent more time at the dealership/mechanic than driving it. Blew to trannies, rear main shit the bed 4 times, ac stopped working twice, both diff blew up, and a crap ton of other issues.
>Inb4 drove it like a tard
He's the kind that waxes and washes a car every weekend, oil change at 2500 miles, and a tune up every 5k. He kept a tacoma looking and driving like it came off the show room floor for nearly 20 years and 300k miles till some bitch rear ended it at 50mph.
>>
>>23248121
I mean, my Bronco was built in '89, and lived in Jew York for appx 25 years before I got ahold of it. There's a fuckton of body rust, and a bunch of other assorted things that need fixed. But despite that, it's still pretty reliable. Yes, I have to build a new engine for it, costing roughly $5k to do it up exactly as I want it, but if you don't want to do the shit I want to, it could be done for less than 1k. For what it's worth, and as far as I can tell, it's always cheaper to keep an older vehicle running and roughly reliable than it is to put that money into a more modern vehicle. If you drop $4-500/mo on a new vehicle, you could easily drop that into an older vehicle and wind up with something that is 100% reliable. I know exactly where my truck is at, and how much I will have to spend to make it as reliable as it was when it rolled off the factory floor. Even after that, still way cheaper to keep it at that level compared to a new car.

Ranchero guy here. This is fine, right?
>take cover off - cool clean water pours out along with peanut butter sludge
>right side wheel bearing is trashed
>both axle seals are gone
>pinion has no preload, in fact ~1/16" of axial play
>carrier bearings have no preload as well, races scored on the outside, pitted deeply on the inside
>runout is huge, ~.020
>pinion seal surface has one of those repair sleeves installed over it

All this, but the gear surfaces seem alright, save for a bit of pitting.
Think this was just a very badly done rebuild and never used enough for it to destroy itself.

Hate was initially directed mostly at the blatantly off topic rants lux and drac would go on. That and coastie’s incompetence, he’s not a literal trip but he’s a psuedotrip

Oh, yep, I'm familiar with those names.

Jesus Christ. It's like fucking high school in here.

Why in the hell anybody gives Anon the slightest bit of attention, let alone any of the shit that's gone on itt, is completely baffling.

>runout
backlash, my bad

Pinion teeth condition, very deeply pitted, however barely broken in. I would expect way more damage considering how badly these bearings were installed.

Rust issues? On a bronco? Nonsense!

I got an 88. Kick panels rotted, floor on drivers ide, and two spots in the rear by the tail gait which was also rotted... Also the inner fenders were fucked as well as where they get spot welded.

Over covid I've been slamming away at it though. All fixed just gotta hang the quarters and inner fender wells. I can't wait for it to be over man

Thoughts on these rims? Nothing fancy, I know

>driving home after thanksgiving
>gas pedal goes limp suddenly
>coast into 7-11
>throttle cable snapped somehow
>attatch the remaining length of cable back to the pedal with a hose clamp and some wizardry
>cable is way too short now
>idle at 2500 rpm all the way home

fuckin lokar

I'm not saying that is good, the condition of the gears or the backlash. I would in no way advise this to be an acceptable job for a professional, but...(there's always a but)...I am however saying I have slapped a lot worse back together on my own shit boxes and shipped them down the road with no issues aside from a little gear noise.

With all the hackery I've done over the years to save money, in my opinion you could absolutely clean it out, add fresh oil, and run that. You can't run on it forever but it'll get you a good ways down the road.

Both are new but the one on the right isn't charging because in 1978 Ford had the shittiest wiring anyone can come up with.
