4 foot 8.5 isn't that different but it's short enough that it limits the loading gauge.

Stephenson beat out Brunel in the Gauge War so they gradually transitioned the gwr over to "standard" gauge. Eliminated the break-of-gauge but also allow them to make wide-as-fuck locomotives because their entire network was built to accommodate them.
