dont want to give too many details because i guess this is probably rare enough these days that someone could figure it out.

but one of our local DPE's, and really the only one who does IR and PPLs, has started getting really nasty. not going to get into specifics, but he's interpreting the ACS extremely loosely and applying it in such a way that basically any 50-100 hour pilot isn't going to pass. so yes, applicants are failing to stay within tolerances, but he's asking for diversion to VOR's while under the hood then flunking them when they "deviate" by 20 degrees or +/-10kts when trying to dial up their nav radio.

maybe acceptable for commerical, and definitely fine for CFI students, but at the private level? shit like climbing turns while under the hood? tell me i'm not off-base here and that this guy isn't fishing for re-test fees.
>>

I've started studying for my first checkride. I'm more worried about the ground knowledge check than the practical test. Any anons have a good resources that helped them? I have the oral exam guide I've read and am going to read a few more times. 2-3 hours max. PA-28 is a forgiving airplane. It's easier to land due to the lower wing riding ground effect better. Be careful about that wing spar issue.

Passed my private today. Absolute crush-job, painted the thousand footers on my short field right dead center, even the DPE was impressed and made a comment.

Quite a humbling feeling bros. I guess I can just go fly a plane now? Kind of hard to believe.

For those of you wondering what a PPL costs right now. Took me 72 hours and a little over $20,000. That includes everything, from the whiz wheel to my iPad to foreflight to medical and all those hours. Onto instrument, I start with the hood tomorrow.

>>
>>1950300
Know the PHAK and FARs. I memorized the ACS too, just so I knew what I had to do and could verbalize during manuevers. Knowing the ACS also allowed me to steer the oral a lot, I'd seriously recommend it once you are in that stage where you're checkride prepping. No use doing it before you solo.

It has basically been my life the last fifty-ish days. I ran through checklists and recited acronyms in the car all the time. In terms of hours studied? No idea, but it was definitely a lot.

the written feels like an irrelevant, ancient memory. so does solo'ing. not saying you shouldn't take it seriously, but you are going to be held to a vastly higher knowledge standard on your checkride vs. when you sit the written.
>>
>>1950304
cont.

I am sure PPL will soon feel the same as the written and solo do now. not really interested in staying at this level for long, but its a validating experience to conquer your first actual checkride. a definite feeling of total euphoria.

It was 110F for three straight weeks here in Albuquerque where it also is 100% convective after 11am every day and I had to tolerate this for several hours every day
Absolute horseshit, I miss my new England flying at least there it was clearly IFR when the weather was bad and I could have the day off without question or sitting around to see if the winds pick up or not
On top of that it's regularly 9000+ density altitude and I'm still expected to teach people in a 150? Why do we even have this thing here?
Basically fuck the desert and hot climates in general
>>
>>1951055
Do it year round, the more expirience you have the better. I would say start in spring so you can get the majority of your training done during the summer then as winter encroaches you can polish stuff like crosswinds on a short soft and other more interesting stuff. That's just my take though, probably not correct way to go about it.

>>
>>1952402
I can only speak as the Ameriflightfag, but if you want part 135 cargo """adventure""" it's an option. One of the most dangerous planes in semi common use is the Metroliner (SA-227) and if you seek an adventure that sucks balls at every turn as well as easy multi engine turbine PIC time flown as single pilot IFR under steam gauges with or without autopilots and often without GPS of any kind, that is available. I do not recommend it, but it is an option.

Note: you may have to start on a BE99 before being able to hold a Metro if you're coming from a pure piston/CFI background.

Walk me through your typical on-GPS flight with them like what are you doing between VORs when you don't have reception from the TO or FROM VOR en route? I assume they are at least ADF ad DME equipped. What kind of quirks can you expect from the Metrolinner?
>>
>>1952412
WHY THE FUCK DON'T YOU HIRE 'BRO FO's NIGGER REEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>1952451
Just a note, outside of exceptions like a Metro needs to be at a certain base of Mx, etc, all GPS Metros belong to charter and San Juan. If you're flying a UPS or DHL route for a regularly scheduled non-island flight, you'll usually be /A (VOR/VOR/DME).

So, generally on a scheduled op, you'll show in the 5-6am range, preflight and possibly reposition your aircraft to another ramp. Sit around and wait for cargo. Fly the stuff, usually within a 45-90min range area, and unload the shit. Then you'll go to our day layover motel and sleep all day there. Around 4-6pm, you'll start the evening run and load up and come back to base. Some runs have multiple legs in the am, or the pm.

For the charter op, you'll show at your assigned start time and sit in the ready for for hours. If you don't get assigned, go home, come back tomorrow. If you get assigned you start the plane and either fly empty to pick up the cargo, or your cargo is already at the airport and load up and go. The metro has very long long legs and is quite fast for it's 16k pound MTOW if properly fueled. You'll fly into place with little to no support, single OR two pilot in the middle of the night or day. Real cowboy shit. Last year, one of the charter flights ran into a golf course on final and lost both wings in the fight, pilot error according to the NTSB.

>>1952463
Because they get sold as a default to United Aviate and UPS Flightpath people first. The best way to weasel your way into it is to bombard a recruiters dick with your resume and say nice things like "I would just LOVE to work for a GREAT and PROFESSIONAL company like AMFlight!!!" I've met a few dudes who played that game and got a job that way. DO NOT ACCEPT A FO POSITION IN THE METRO, Saab or E120 only.
>>
>>1952451
>what do you do between VORs with no reception
That'd put you into class 2 navigation, which AMF isn't legal for without a GPS. You won't be doing this, though in practice it happens all the time. Get creative. ATC often clears you to fixes and you will say "Unable, I'm slant Alpha (/A)" and the they'll groan and vector you on a heading to intercept the Victor Airway or direct to a VOR.

The Metro uses the TPE-331 engine, which is an amazing engine on paper, but a shitpile to operate with. 1,000hp with low fuel burn. They're a bitch to start and require a GPU in almost all cases. They only produce usable thrust from 96-100% RPM/N1, and they're extremely loud. The Metro doesn't have good brakes. No matter how hard you stand on the brakes, they're horribly weak. I cannot stress to you how weak they are, you won't understand it unless you tried to use them. The Metro has electro-hydraulic nosewheel steering that often fails completely, or will send you in an unintended direction. I have friends who have wound up in the grass. The steering system is horrid, especially paired with horrid brakes. The rudder is undersized for the length of airplane, so the X-wind limit is low and directional control is wonky. There is no autofeather, if you lose a motor after V1, you'll need to instantly recognize and feather the correct engine (AMF rules say 400' AGL). The Metros are certified to fly in excess of 30k ft, but most can't hold more than 0.5psi of cabin pressure. Know each Metro tail, because that'll determine how high you can fly, I'm not kidding that I would be limited to 12,000ft because that's where my Metro would hit 10,000ft cabin pressure. The Metro body is weak, and even if you're within floor loading and individual bay limits, with the cargo door (rear door) open you may have to get a group of dudes to physically push the Metro tail up to unbend the plane so you can close the door.

This is just a slice of it, the Metro is a widowmaker. I loved it.
>>
>>1952463
To specify, if you weasel into a E120 or Saab FO job, don't accept a change to a Metro FO job. The company is putting legally trained and qualified FOs in the Metro, but unless the duty day is 8.1-10 hours of flight time, the FO gets to log none of that time legally. The company pretends this isn't the case, and the FAA POI is a pussy who lets it slide. Don't have hundreds of hours with non-kosher flight time in your logbook like I do. It's not legal or ethical for them to do it. A Metro FO is not a required crewmember outside of specific circumstances, and AMF doesn't have the new SIC PDP program from 2018 because then their FOs would have legal time and be able to leave them sooner.

Don't ask me about the training contracts, I straight up do not know. I never signed one, and never will. I left AMF a while ago, good riddance to them.
