I have done this with lumber. If you try to carry more than just a tiny amount this way, or if the load shifts off center at all then it gets in the way of your legs very easily.

I have to carry a five foot paddle and I'm considering this. I saw one guy doing it. Pain in the ass in a backpack but secured in a long pannier might be better. $350 so I'm not goofing around
