How easy is it to get away with lying on your FAA medical exam? >>1879999Hey friend.1. Helicopters are awesome and good luck getting licensed. I love being a heli pilot and taking my wife on absolutely badass dates most women only get to watch on The Bachelor and shit.2. There is no money in helicopters. You will never make good money as a heli pilot. In the words of my super salty flight instructor (who's main job is a Boeing engineering program director) with thousands of hours in both fixed wing and helicopter (about 12k total in his logbook):"Don't fly helicopters for money. Make money somewhere else, then spend it on helicopters."
>>1881148Using white out on a logbook is a giant legal no-no. If you ever get into trouble, white out is seen by the FAA as hiding things. Obviously, if a CFI did it and it's obviously limited to early stuff, leave it there. The proper way to fix an error made in pen is to line through it in a way that makes the entry visible, and to add in the correct information. Don't scribble over the mistake either. Initialing the cross-out is optional.

>>1882998It seems more and more common now. Not sure if it's affirmative action or just more relaxed instructors and examiners. But I've seen some quite retarded people flying that didn't get weeded out in private by some miracle.
>>1883038I wouldn't doubt affirmative action. Instructors here get punished if too many students fail. Could also be on a long enough timeline, anyone with money can pass, just have to get lucky once.
>>1883038DPEs get predictable. I'd like to think I absolutely deserved my PPL, and have been flying competently since then and passed a check ride to rent a bird. But my DPE does all the examinations for everyone in my region and after years of doing it, his order of events and whatnot during the check ride is basically common knowledge. The last few training sessions, my instructor and I basically rehearsed what he believed the check ride would be like to a T, and it ended up going exactly that way. So I can definitely see a less competent student just training to pass the test and succeeding.
>>1882927nah, she was clearly the pilot monitoring (ie the FO) during taxi and takeoff. If you actually listen to the tape the male voice comes on later and is much older/more experienced and is thusly more exasperated with the situation. Regardless, the FO fucked up by reading back the right instructions but letting the captain go the wrong way. Pussy shit like that might have got her into a 777 cockpit but goes to show what happens when shit gets real.

Can /n/ help me with a little pet project?I've been daydreaming about a design for an 80 passenger turboprop flying boat airliner. Would a four abreast or five abreast cabin be better for cargo? I was concerned that a shorter but thicker fuselage would be heavier and thus reduce range.I'll eventually make a thread about this later with drawings.

taking a discovery flight in a few weeks. I don't really have any intention of doing flight school. My what were yalls like?
>>1883342My discovery flight was actually pretty lame. The instructor let me take controls a bit but felt like it was too windy to really let me do anything.I decided to give it another shot at a different school. It was much windier than the previous time. Instructor basically picked it up into a hover, got the takeoff going, then handed me the controls and said don't kill us. Nobody else was flying the pattern because winds were 18kts with gusts to 25kts and the other school said fuck that. We were in a R22 which gets absolutely brutalized by high winds. It was super scary but my instructor let me figure it out and ended up being a ton of fun. I was hooked after that.
>>1883349>Instructor basically picked it up into a hover, got the takeoff going, then handed me the controls and said don't kill usjesus fuck lolare all heli instructors just OK with the prospect of dying at any moment? are they all living the samurai life?
>>1883371I thought he was crazy at first, but ended up finding out he's been doing this for so long that he can very quickly recognize the difference between safe and unsafe. Any time in my early hours of training thi bgg s were starting to get out of hand, he'd help out on the controls. But he strongly believes one of the best ways to learn is to let the student attempt to recover from situations instead of guarding the controls and taking over any time things get spooky. There were some wild moments in the beginning, but him letting me mentally and physically struggle on my own in absolute bullshit conditions (every flight of my first 20 hours was in miserable weather) made me pretty good for a low hour PPL pilot. I only have about 65 hours on the books now and they trust me alone taking the wife on dates with the singular R44 the entire business revolves around.

>>1883502Pilots handbook of aeronautical knowledge. The FAA has the best documentation, in both level of knowledge, presentation, and modern colored diagrams and pictures. Jepp, King, Gleim, etc are all charging $300 for the same books theyve had for 40 years, with minimal updates with major rules changes. Stick with FAA pubs which are free digitally, and very cheap if you want a printed copy. If you want advanced books, just know they’re for ‘gee whiz’ knowledge, not anything you’d need to know for a FAA checkride. For example, Aerodynamics for Naval Aviators is alot of high level bullshit (and actually an FAA source doc) but otherwise you have The Illustrated Guide to Aerodynamics, turbine pilots guide books, instruments, nav stuff, etc. All that shit is extraneous. Now the really hard stuff is understanding legalese for a commercial oral, and it’s complicated without an aviation lawyer who dumbs it down (which is who I learned from). When you get to a Commercial ride, be ready to know what “Holding Out” is legally, and what 4 things constitute “Holding Out” for the FAA. Know the difference between Common Carriage and Private Carriage. Know that, if you are employed by a company that gives you an airplane and a mission, you’re probably legally flying (private), but if you provide the airplane and offer flights ‘the public’ you’ll get your peepee smacked. The ASA Commercial Oral Exam Guide has a chapter dedicated to this, and its IMO the best way to learn it, or teach it to a guy trying to understand it. Primary sources on these are FAA released Advisory Circulars from 50 years ago.

Two weeks into ground school. Starting the flight portion in a couple days. Really looking forward to it. Did an intro flight with the same guy and am pretty happy we'll be together for the training as well. So far the most confusing thing has been how the altimeter reacts to weather conditions. >>1884380what?why?
>>1884382no.even less money, even less time at home (and with some airlines part of the appeal is the increased amount of time at home, like allegiant or hawaiian so you'll lose that opportunity) and even more inhuman working expectations (drowsiness, body problems etc.) and of course the fact that you'll be on the ground with all the undesirables as opposed to 32-38,000 feet off the ground away from them
>>1884382Only if you're 65+.
>>1883252>>1883266>>1879666I basically wanted a western analogue to the Beriev Be-200. I have strong suspicion that there is a sizable market for a large multirole flying boat, but American carriers don't want to admit their interest in a Russian-built aircraft. I also feel that today's society depends too much on landplanes and could benefit from something about the size of a Q400 that can operate amphibiously. The design I was imagining is basically:>Seating for 80 passengers in either a 4 or 5 abreast cabin>High, unswept front tapered wing with small retractable pontoons about 2/3 of the way down>Powered by 2 Pratt & Whitney PW150 turboprops rated at ~5500 shp in an overhead pod in a push-pull configuration (I have no idea if it's possible to have PW150's installed this way)>Sponsoons just aft of the wing for stability but more to serve as a place for the main landing gear retracts>V-tail to keep the control surfaces out of the propwash of both engines which share a centerline>Overall similar to the Dornier Seastar (pic related), but bigger and with a pressurized cabin and a V-tailI don't know if this is realistic but I imagined it using a jetbridge on a terminal on land and then flying to a remote island destination and unloading passengers on a dock (or vice versa). Aside from passenger service, I imagined it carrying freight in a similar manner, and it could also be an excellent firefighting plane.

Does it matter what airport you go to for flight lessons? I have a very small municipal airport 15 min away from me with 1 runway and a bigger one 30 min away with 2 runways. The bigger one has a lot more flight schools and instructors available. Is it worth driving the extra 10-15 miles each way for that or will the closer one be good enough?
>>1884971Supposedly reduced induced drag more than the increase in parasitic drag. Gliders are very efficient, but that thing isn’t going to fit in a regular gate without some kind of folding action. Boeing does have the regulatory experience with the 777X so it’s something they could do.
>>1884986Do research on the reputation of the actual flight schools and instructors, don't get distracted by the facilities

>>1884472Another thing you should consider is how baggage would be loaded into your plane when the baggage compartment is at or below the waterline.
>>1884988>>1885112Interesting points. The increased wingspan seems like it could be a problem fitting at gates and if the folding part isn't bullshit then at least some of the weight savings from the non-cantilever design will be used there. Still interesting and it would be cool to see these flying around.

>>1885241Big sad. Not surprised though. Handmade wooden blades coating over a million bucks a set. Awesome machine and I always wanted one, it's just way too expensive to be cost effective in many roles.
>>1885248>Handmade wooden blades
>>1885251Yeah. It's pretty nuts but the blades of the K-Max are wooden. Rigid rotor hub design, flapping is performed via the blades flexing instead of hinges. Metal fatigues, wood does not. Blades have control rods that run up the middle, that control surface you see near the end of the blade is how the helicopter is controlled. It changing position causes the blades to flap differently, changing lift direction. Pretty fucking nuts design desu but it does a good job at picking up heavy shit.
>>1885252>Metal fatigues, wood does not.I mean, some metals don't have to worry about fatigue under a certain stress limit and stronger composites do exist, but the wood autism does have some sort of appeal.
>>1885254I think they went with wood because the nature of the system requires very finely tuned balancing of the blades. You cannot mix and match K-max blades, each set is is finely honed to be perfectly balanced in every way. I imagine gradually shaving off bits of wood to make everything perfect is slightly easier than making adjustments to composites, but I can't pretend to be an expert. I just know the rigid rotor system of the K-max is 100 percent why it's so fucking expensive to purchase and maintain. The meshing gearbox and the rest of the bird are surprisingly simple.

Just got my first flying job after cpl as a sky diving pilot, I don’t have the funds to pursue cfi but once I get enough hours and make a decent sic or corporate gig I’ll save up a bit and go get it. What do they test and check during a class 1 medical? And how long does it roughly take?
>>1885539Mine was a standard sports physical with an extra focus on vision tests like depth and your eye muscle strength. >>1885551Can you elaborate on the sports test?
>>1885552She tested my blood pressure, put a stethoscope on my chest, made me do the eye thing I said, looked for reaction problems by looking into my eyes with the thing that blows air into it, sometimes I’ve heard of people doing a hearing test, I peed in a cup so make sure you drink water and don’t pee in the morning or a few hours before you go there. That’s about all I can remember. Basically if you think there’s anything they could get you for don’t eat/drink/do it and you’ll be okay.

What's the best pilot job you can get outside of commercial aviation?I'm guessing corporate pilot pays the best, but they probably only hire pilot's with thousands of hours of experience and are willing to work cheaper because their company laid them off. No chance in hell they'd hire a rookie with 200-300 flight hours, right?Thought about being self-employed, hiring an aircraft of some kind and doing cargo runs, put I'm unsure if there's enough profit in it to make a living (but maybe it'd be worth if for the freedom)

Who major airline pilot /neet/ lifestyle here?Live in base, bid reserve, and pretty much only get called in for landing currency. Fly maybe a dozen times a year while making six figures. >>1885955All my students are white and speak English thank fucking GodBut that could also be because I intentionally don't take on ESL students because I don't want to fucking deal with them lol

In fact MSFS made me want to become a pilot because it’s so fun but I know it probably isn’t even 10% as good as the real thing, so I’m starting my first lesson next week.
>>1885921You're guaranteed a monthly minimum no matter how little you fly. Typically around 75 hours from what I've seen. So go on reserve where you sit around waiting for them to call and never have them call. Free money.

>>1886078It was hot during one of my first sessions (around 3 hours) and we were practicing hovering. My instructor turns to me and says, "It's too damn hot, I should have taken the doors off, don't kill us please," and without even letting me ask wtf that means, he popped his door open on our R22 and leaned outside to get air. I was so fucking scared knowing if I lost control and risked balling it up, he likely wouldn't have time to save us.I think heli instructors learn a certain language, a way of telling you you're doing great without actually saying it. It's either that or they just don't fear death anymore.
>>1885650This is illegal without a Part 135 operator certificate. There are no owner-operators in flying like there are in trucking. Owner-operators and extremely rare in flying, and in practice are limited to remote Alaska. The best job in flying is the major airlines. Once you hold significant seniority, working becomes optional.
>>1885961Autist NEET doesn’t understand what work is. Additionally does not understand that real life is not vidya or fun. More news at nine, here’s Tom with the weather.
>>1886095>It's either that or they just don't fear death anymoreI think they've just all accepted that death will find them when it does, whether in the form of a fatal student or a bad jesus nut
>>1886112There's a lot of owner-operators doing stuff like cropdusting and whatnot throughout the US. But yeah, mostly in the more rural areas.
>>1886151Crop dusting is one of the things you can "hold out" for. So it's perfectly legal to have your own Air Tractor and advertise your services. You can't do that in regards to transporting persons or property for hire.
I read about a pilot commuting from Amsterdam to New York. How the fuck does that happen? How do you get a visa to even live in another country when you're in the US half the time? Same goes for pilots commuting from Japan/Asia to the west coast. I assume you'd have to be a dual citizen to begin with, or find some loophole. You'd have to be pretty insane to commute that far anyways, so I guess finding out how to live in the country is the least of your problems.>>1886114To be fair, I think a lot of autists genuinely find these sorts of things endlessly entertaining. E.g. an autismo whose special interest is trains might never get tired of being a train conductor.
Can someone explain why the average number of hours most people get a PPL in is 75 hours, when the FAA requirement is only 40? Is it really that difficult to get to the level required to pass the checkride?
>>1886496Yeah you have to really dedicate yourself to do it in 40 hours. It's not that hard, but many students are dumb, old, foreign, or lacking in work ethic. The key is really consistent flying. If you aim to do it in 40 (or 35 for a 141 school) you have to fly at least three times a week with no extended breaks. A lot of my students don't fly that often and even when they're scheduled that often, things get cancelled for weather or other dumb reasons. Also some of them suck balls at flying airplanes lmao. I have one older guy student who's close to 40 hours right now and still can't land the airplane without trying to kill us both.
>>1886507How many hours a week do you recommend if I want to be proficient enough to do it in 40 hours?
>>18865556 hours of flying minimum and well more than that doing your ground school stuff
>>1886496I got my helo PPL in 52 hours, which is pretty decent I hear. Flew about 2x a week. From what I've heard, people get lazy and take breaks which makes them end up having to relearn and waste time. My cousin is doing fixed wing and just wastes time, he'll say shit like "I have a flight scheduled for today but I don't feel like it so I'm just gonna cancel." Whereas I knew the longer between lessons, the more hours I'd need, so even when I wasn't really feeling it, I was getting in that fucking bird and getting my reps in.
>>1885650being Andrew Tate's pilot
>>1885863shut the fuck up retard dont fuck it up for everyone else. fuck you
>>1886496I got my PPL in just over 40 hours in the span of a little over 2 months. It was at a pretty busy airport too, and they only had one runway when they normally have two, so a good chunk of that is sitting on the ground or shit like 5 nm downwind legs for rich fuck x's landing Gulfstream.I flew at least three times per week and spent much of my free time studying, watching videos, practicing in sims, asking questions from airport friends, etc., while also having a full time job. Obviously I still spent time hanging out at the airport, playing vidya, drinking, etc., but for example when sitting in car traffic I'd listen to LiveATC, or listen to free ground school videos in the background, and so on.A big thing that helped was that I've spent nearly my entire life interested in and constantly learning about mechanical things, with a good chunk of that in aviation. I also played flight sims a bunch, but it was mostly shit like DCS and IL-2 and I guess War Thunder and KSP if that counts.I also had gone on plenty of plane rides with my friends for free who would let me fly and eventually takeoff and land, and I'd gathered about 10 hours of flying time (unlogged as they weren't instructors). Even after those flights I would look up what I learned to reinforce my knowledge of it, and would practice it in a sim. And even if I couldn't fly or was in a back seat, it got me used to the sensation of flight for free.At the end of the day, as other anons said I think it boils down to people half-assing it, unwilling to commit in their spare time, taking long breaks, and not coming in with a prior background or general understanding. But I'm no instructor, so I can only really speak of my own experience and assumptions. I will say that starting flight lessons without doing the absolute bare minumum of preparation - just listening to the audiobook of the Pilot's Handbook you can find online - is a massive waste of money, and anyone who does so is a complete idiot.
How can I speedrun the regional > mainline phase?
I have some questions about flight physicals:Will a third class certificate last me all the way through flight school? I assume I’d need to get a first/second class for working as a flight instructor after that. Can I just walk in off the street as a rando and take a medical exam?I can’t start flight school for another year, but I want to get the medical exam now. Can I get a first class exam, and not renew it back up to first class until I’m done with flight school? I want to make sure that I won’t have any issues with medical exams in the future. What exactly goes on in a first class medical exam? I can’t seem to find consistent reports.
>>1887088Dunno what a second/first entails but yes, if you're willing to pay for it then you can just schedule a physical even without being a pilot. Provided you aren't an old man, your third class would be good for 5 years which should be plenty time to finish flight school.

>>1887318I began to feel lately that society depends too much on landplanes and that building flying boats is rapidly becoming a lost art. I have a big soft spot for the old Grumman flying boats.I thought it would be immensely useful to have an aircraft that can operate from a major cargo or passenger terminal and connect to remote islands or other areas where airports can't be built.
>>1887324Seaplanes are gay and cringe, if there was a market for them the market would make them
How do I get a loan to pay for part 61 flight training? I've read that you can get student loans for part 141 schools but I really don't want to do that because they seem a lot more expensive and I don't want to do it as a full time thing. Just want to go to a local flight instructor for 2-3 days a week.
>>1887331There's some options but the interest rates are ass. I paid for a chunk of my training with a personal loan since Amex gave me one with a rate of about 8 percent.
I've decided to lie on my medical exam. What are the chances they will find out? I'm currently seeing a for a stomach issue and taking a prescription for it but I'm not going to say anything about it because from everything I've read it takes months for it to get through the bureaucracy of the FAA and I don't want to sit here waiting and wasting all that time. If these retarded government workers weren't so lazy and slow I would have more of an incentive to be honest, but I don't want to deal with any of that bullshit.
>>1887433Unless you get into an accident they aren't going to look. Plus you can always play dumb and say you didn't know. Don't be like this guy I know who self grounds for retarded shit and contacts AOPA every other week about nothing.
>>1887446Not that anon but what if I'm injecting Brazilian bathtub estrogen? There's no way I can think of that they'd be able to know, as it's not on any medical records. Asking seriously. I really want to become a pilot and I don't want this to hold me back.
>>1887489Being a tranny is a mental illness so you're out of luck.
>>1887489I'd report you to the FAA myself for being a tranny lmao
>>1887330Chad seaplane can land on 70% of the Earth’s surface.Passed my instrument check ride this week. I heard a lot of horror stories about otherwise “flawless” pilots failing this ride for going 1 foot outside PTS, etc etc. It definitely has more to do with if you carry yourself well and are generally safe. If you act like a schmuck the DPE will pick any reason to fail you.
Is there enough interest for a /rotor/?
It's over
>>1887722I wish, but probably not. Even though gyroplanes might get more popular if/when the FAA finalizes the changes to LSA regulations. Technically, small helicopters like the R22 would squeak in under the LSA weight limit, so that might be interesting.
>>1887663>>1887673Troon pilots are explicitly allowed by the FAA, retard. That’s not what I’m talking about.
>>1887843>people can fly with a self diagnosed mental illnessDamn that's pretty cool sounds like a nice loophole. And what are you talking about then, buddy?
Doing hovering practice in my third flight hour, instructor told me he was bored, so I suppose that's a good sign.
