What's a good drink for a budding bicyclist to keep him going?
>>
For longer rides most importantly water with electrolytes. Sodium, pottasium and magnesium ideally, one of those dissolvable tablets works.

Nutrition wise, it depends on you. We're all built differently, i find that lots of glucose can make me crash, but a high fat meal can keep going for hours.

I pick up some a pastry along the road if I feel down, I use electrolytes only during summer and most of the time I'm fine with a good ole bowl of cereal(not the excessive sugary ones) for a 3 to 4 hours ride, I take a protein shakes at home after the shower.

For long rides water with maltodextrine, a pinch of salt and a shot of concentrated lemon juice. Easy to digest, cheap to make, easy to store and neutral enough to not be disgusted by it after one bottle.
>>
Flat coke

>>1856791
unironically, bread and water and a water with electrolytes pre ride.

boomers swear by a cup of black coffee right before going on bike. I've done it but I don't prefer it.

1 bottle cage with a mix of ice, water, an electrolyte fizz tablet, and a few ounces of minute maid fruit punch.

Now the challenge is don't mix them up 50 miles in and squirt your face with sticky salty sweet water.

Coffee prior to rides is great (or if you have money to burn and do long ones cafe stops are nice indulgence), studies are there that well establish the efficacy of a reasonable caffeine intake for cyclists. Besides, it’s tradition and good coffee is great, especially in these crisp months that get colder and colder. Personally I would say don’t skip breakfast or do any intermittent fasting type stuff. If you’re trying to shed some weight to get quicker in the long term and conquer hills easier, then cycling fasted isn’t a terrible idea. BUT it won’t feel as good and you’re in much greater danger of bonking early, and your performance will likely suffer if stats and individual rides matter to you. Imo the balanced approach is best, don’t get bloated or stuffed but something no less than an hour prior and maybe a one small snack (sugary is best) during if you go for a couple hours or more hard. Hydration and fuel becomes more critical in the heat and when you’re still adapting to new training demands. At home don’t ruin your efforts by inhaling the fridge but you can enjoy quite a bit of carbs. After hard rides (such as those with lots of steep climbing) upping your protein for recovery is nice, such as having a shake. Mid ride (esp for long ones or if underfed prior) I like clif bars or the equivalent as they provide a nice variety of macros and types of carbs. Pure protein bars won’t give you as much useable energy in the short term and are better for simply staving off starvation and making you feel less hungry, not the best for quick recovery protein either. I do eat probably an excessive amount of junk (White Castle sliders, rice Krispees, ice cream, soda, candy) but if you manage a century or something like that and/or are going hard all week it’s much more excusable.

The question was more about food but water is really important so it should be underscored Drink plenty in total and drink often. It makes a huge impact in how you do.

Personally I like to bring a bottle of port on anything over 100km to go with my cheese. Below that, cheese is sufficient.
>>
Nothing.

I powerlift and eat like a pig. When i ride a bike I'm always fasted.
>>
I have awful eating habits like $40 of dominos to myself at 3AM every 3-4 days, french fries and occasional burger patties at work and like 2 liters+ of Dr Pepper every 6 out of 7 days, I’m always biking fasted and it’s always worked out much better than when I eat breakfast beforehand. I tried eating (sandwich) on a ride and it was just a bad idea overall. Lots of electrolyte drink for me, maybe some emergency candies if I have a frame bag and I’m going for an exceptionally long ride. I tend to just feast afterwards.
Coffee all the time just not while biking who the fuck sits down at coffee shops

As someone who's doing 130 km rides pretty regularly I carry one 650 ml bottle of water, one 750 ml bottle of electrolyte drink and one 500 ml bottle of electrolyte drink in my back pocket. For food I use Corny bar (usually take 4 of those with me) and eat them at regular intervals. Energy gel would be better but they are way too expensive since you need fuckload of them.

Going without food you are gonna crash down at the first mild climb when you will have to push a few watts to keep the bike at least upright. Your body will lack the necessary sugar and your legs locks down.

I make my own energy bars, they are basically flapjacks but I don't use refined sugar and put loads of nuts, seeds and dried fruits in them. They taste great and are ideal for taking on rides. They are also much better for you and far cheaper than similar products you can buy in stores.

Ingredients (I make it by feel more than some precise recipe, so play around with quantities)
Rolled oats
Organic trail mix (generic but nice seeds, nuts and fruits mix)
Chopped pistachios
Chopped dried apricots
Chopped Goja berries
Chopped dried apple
Butter
Honey
Soft brown sugar
Maple syrup
70% cocoa chocolate chips
Sea salt
Cinnamon
Ginger

Melt butter, sugar, honey in a pan, add spices and salt, whisk until it emulsifies, fold into the dry mix until a sticky mass, press into a lined baking tin and bake at 135 Celsius until golden brown, about 25 minutes.
Leave to cool in the tin then cut into bars.

Lovely energy rich snack for cycling.

>>
>>1888693
You should be able to ride 1-2 hours without eating anything. You don't need electrolytes either.
after that yeah, not dangerous, but you're gonna run out of energy and find it incredibly difficult. So if you do actually want to ride more than that, take some sugar.
