What are your favourite traffic lights, /n/? I like the big, bulky yellow ones.
>>1802381The black ones because they're much easier to see in bright lightAlso pic rel even though they're considered obsolete now
East German pedestrian lights because they equal home.
>>1802381Old school, pic related. Also in the top five, the ones that my town used to have before they were upgraded. Yellow around the lights (all incandescent), no "shield", metal poles.>>1802382That's the "doghouse" design.
>>1802542Those are actually nice for minor intersections in residential areas. They fit in better and seem less intrusive (the ones I'm familiar with are still painted green)>>1802542>That's the "doghouse" design.I know. They've been around for several decades, then some bureaucrats decided they were 'confusing' to motorists and they're all being removed. I figure that has to be part of a kickback scheme.
>>1802382I noticed it's using LEDs instead of the typical incandescent bulbs. I assume it's in a climate where it doesn't snow?
>>1802388>german traffic light>has a swastika on the displayhuh
>>1802381I like the pedestrian ones that still say Walk/Don't Walk because those pretty much disappeared overnight, and it's a nice reminder of my childhood when I see one
>>1803089Same. I still see them in small towns once in a while (towns that don't have the money to replace things just because they can)
>>1802381Adaptive Signals connected to UTC Systems.
>>1802542Came in here to say these, the ones that hang from the wires are peak American Dream™
When I went to England to see family, there was a Traffic Light tree that was installed. Sadly, the lights weren't on when I went, but I think this looks really cool
I don't really care about the lights themselves. The only ones that have bothered me are a few down in VA with a white "strobe ring" around the red light.More obnoxious is when a little town, neighborhood, etc doesn't use standard signs for street names, etc. There's one near me that uses Trajan (medium, not bold) black text on a white background. And this isn't some subdivision, or outdoor mall "streets", but public roads. A typical four way intersection will have two signposts, diagonall opposite, and if you're not right next to one, you can't read the thing.
>>1802381Arrow shows red = stopArrow shows green = goBottom yellow light flashes = out of serviceWhat else do you need?
>>1803174Never seen that in my life, where was it?
The ones that tell me how many more seconds I have to wait.
my favorite lights are the ones I skip
>>1803767never understood these. Wouldn't it encourage racing?
>>1802724some have heater wires installed, making incandescent completely obsolete
>>1802381for me, it's semaphore signals (they have lights in them)
>>1803777based and checked
>>1803722It was near Billingsgate Market in London. Great fish market, too. England was very nice to visit.
>>1804759Miss those. They weren't common but now they're pretty much all gone
I like them when they have grill meaning they can only be seen from a specific lane(s)
Those 3M ones that could be "aimed" at the intended lane(s) of travel
I've only ever lived/driven in areas with Horizontal lights- I assume the reason they're horizontal has something to do with hurricanes/high winds in general? (Pic Related is from Houston).
>>1803089>>1803093I saw a mess of these when I was out on a ride the other day. I'll take some pics next time I go through that neighborhood. If this thread's not around I'll post them in an "intersection" thread.
>>1802388Wtf is that?
>>1808571That and sometimes it's just done for to improve the look of an intersection. Can also be clearance-related in some cases.
>>1808653An East German pedestrian light.
>>1808571Horizontal lights are everywhere in Texas, as far north as Lubbock and far west as El Paso. I have no idea why.
Austrian ones, where the green light starts flashing before it changes to yellow
One of the drawbacks of the horizontally mounted signals is that they're more confusing than vertically mounted signals for colorblind people. Some place in Canada made each signal a different shape for that reason. Green is a regular circle, yellow is a diamond, and red is square.
>>1808767That just feels unnecessary
>>1808981I don't get this. There are three signals. Just learn top = stop, bottom = go, which is the same the whole world over. How is this more confusing than these totally random shapes.
The "dont walk / walk" pedestrian signs are my favorite. They remind me of going downtown with my dad as a squirt.
>>1809172>horizontal signals>top = stop, bottom = go>>1808981Some places in Central Europe had those as well, with yellow being a triangle instead. For some reason they got rid of them in the 80s, always wondered why.
>>1808981Are there not colorblind people in Japan? They seem to get along just fine.
I'm a cyclist, traffic lights are invisible to me.
>>1809341Hope you're not as invisible to the rest of traffic otherwise you'll get what you deserve eventually.
>>1803885My experience is that it's the opposite, you slow down if you see that you definitely won't make it (low number on green) and you slow down your roll to match the next green interval without stopping (low number on red). They're even better for pedestrians, you can see how long the current interval will last and adapt your walking speed or direction.
My city has female traffic lights since about the year 2000.I think it's cute. Unlike most forced woke shit nowadays
>>1809330In Japan they don't matter
>>1809352Keep seething while we enjoy freedom, cagecuck.
Interesting old traffic light in Nagoya
>>1809571That looks kind of confusing, how old is it?
>>1809373T H I C C
>>1809590No idea. I would guess 1960s. The inner signals are crosswalk signals and don't appear to be easily seen by drivers.
>>1809571and here's the soulless LED variant...
>>1809619also check out this channel for Japanese traffic light autism
>>1809621damnit forgot linkhttps://www.youtube.com/c/singou/videos
>>1809622Nice channel!>ゆっくり解説 That's a rabbit hole if you see one.
Acme semaphore traffic signal in LA, these were all removed by the end of the 1950s
>>1808767Switzerland does this too
>>1809645i heard that recently a guy was about to trademark these words in the video title, and it was even legal, but he didn't do it in the end https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=38ExukfyMoM
and now for “Japanese traffic lights overseas”this is in Phnom Penh, Cambodia
>>1810322Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania
I think reversible lanes are nice for arterial roads, but they're seldom utilized and they probably are less safe than normal roadways.
Do these niggers count? They're illuminated at night.
>>1810608There's a little city near me that has this extra light at some intersections, mostly side streets along a busy road. It's an indicator that you've tripped the ground loop. Pretty useful, when you're on a bike.
>>1802381I wouldn't mind taking this one home personally.
I like the transit signal for the streetcars.
>>1803715Colour blind people are FUCKED with this one.
>>1802381I liked the ones we used to have that used neon light tubes as their light source. The colors were so soft and saturated. Now they've all mostly been phased out in favor of soulless LED shit. Also have this autistic trove of French traffic lights. We've had so many different styles over the years.http://feu.routier.free.fr/slt-permanente.htmlJust click the logos under "Visualisation".
>>1811576In NY we have these. NJ has a similar thing for it's streetcars.
>>1802388How about the Karl Marx pedestrian lights from Trier?
>>1810321>>1810322>>1810326How the fuck? They're really working? I would expect the lights are phased out ten years ago.And people really obey the lights?>>1811688When the timer is horizontal it means 'red', vertical is 'green'. Only a fucked up retard with a 90-degree-tilted head will fail to live any further.>>1809571Can people from the sidewalk see the light mounted up high in the middle of the road?
>>1813799>French traffic light autismAre you Kemro59 or something?
See the traffic light in this intersection? I didn't. I was lost in chinatown after midnight and managed to t-bone a car full of restaurant workers. Sent 2 of them to the hospital. Fun times.
>>1808755So a truck with a taller than normal load won't clip the light
>>1811276The worst job in the world. Never again.
>>1804759there's still a couple of these active near me, but I don't think they will be around for too much longer
>>1802381None of them
