Meaning I've had a bike stolen from me more than once. Yeah that first comment was a bit vague.

That's rough buddy. What happened?

My friend's bike recently got stolen but the cops actually managed to track it down to some crackhead camp. However it was mangled. Bent wheels, missing random nuts and bolts etc. He was so proud of it before that incident because it was in mint condition.

Okay guys, hear me out for a second. Bike theft is rampant among any major city, no amount of enforcement will stop this. So what if, instead of trying to solve the problem, cities just buy up a shit load of a single type of bike, and leave them around town like the scooter rideshares do? Just say "fuck it, y'all gonna steal it anyway" and let that be the public transportation budget?

Diversity is our strength anon, if they start stealing stuff it's because you're not giving them enough gibs to live in human dignity.
Also let me remind you this is not a predetermined strategy to ensure a 24/7 surveillance state with cameras on everyone's door and GPS tracking on your body.

In the capital of my country there is a serial bike thief for like 40 years now. He has a really high tier bike gear (the spandex suit, helmet, googles), but no bike. He goes near bikers with high end bikes (think the kind of people who compete in bike 'marathons' and shit) and he talks them smooth, then he asks them to let him ride their bikes a few meters to see what they're like, and he gives them the keys to his car. Of course they're just some random keys and the guy rides away the bikes. He has stolen a few dozens and they even have drawings of the guy, but it's really hard to catch him because technically it wasn't a theft, but a con, and that makes the procedure different. Basically all the biking communities know about him, but people still keep falling for him. Mexico city by the way.

Fuck it, get another one, no point crying over spilled milk. It's gone and it isn't coming back. Sure it's a paion in the ass but you have to get over it. At the end of the day it's an object, a cluster of molecules assembled for profit, you didn't lose a family member or friend, you lost a tool.

If you ever find yourself caring that much about any tool to the point where losing it causes you to rush home, boot up your PC and post a paedophillic cartoon on an anonymous image board in the hope of getting attention you should probably think long and hard about where your life is headed.

I knew the serial bike thief in my small town in the UK. he was chief thief through pure numbers. did he steal my bike? obviously. all of my mates? sure. was he stealing thousands of pounds of gear? no. he was literally stealing cheap BSOs from kids. no one knows what he did with those bikes but there's a rumour one guy caught him and beat him bad enough to get his own bike back from the stash and there were hundreds stacked up in his shed and every room of his house.

I ride around this city enough that I wouldn't want to lock up my new to me bike unless it was with a big chain, and even then for not too long.
>>
I hadn't ridden a bike in years until I went to college freshman year and liked it. Got a new hybrid bike before sophomore year, cost around $500 I think. Got stolen within a week on campus because I used a crappy cable lock with it.

After that I bought a used Cannondale road bike and haven't ever left it unattended in the decade since. I use a private locker on the subway but if I go into a store, I walk with the bike through the aisles unless they kick me out. I don't give a fuck.
>>
>>1721305
haven't seen the vid, but here you can already put police codes on your bike
I've heard that bike thiefs don't touch the bikes that have the dna stickers on them. IDK how exactly it works, but it apparently it works and it's for free.
>>
>>1720953

If y'all would actually lock up your shit properly you'll be fine.

Most thieves carry bolt cutters, meaning small items only should be secured by cable locks. My saddle for example has a cable and I use that to lock my rear wheel (as a fuck you), I use a cable on my front wheel that loops around a different pole of the bike rack. Chain lock looping around 2 pieces of the bike rack. Chain lock naturally around the front wheel and frame. D lock on the rear and cable locked to that. Saddle lock looped through the D lock as well.

Everything removed from my bike including pump.

To get my bike you have three options, hydraulic cutters which is what finally broke my chain lock. You can't really pack those things around comfortably where I live or a angle grinder or attempt blunt force breaking the bike rack then running off with a 25 pound touring bike... with 8 pounds of locks ontop of it.

Now, what crackhead just happens to have a grinder and overpacked in aluminum/steel angle grinder blades? Very very very few.

Go big or expect to have your bike stolen.

Chainlock, Dlock, Cable, Saddle lock. Never have had my bike stolen even locking it up near sketchy places.

when bikes get stolen they get transported, often by truck, to a bike chopshop where tweaked-out mechanics tear bikes down and rebuild them with different components to make them harder to track. then the rebuilt bike is transported to a different city to sell. it's like a one minute operation to pull that rear wheel cover off

Recently bought a bike from Gumtree, this Indian guy met me at the train station and drove me to this industrial unit, he was a great bloke and we talked cars and house building etc on the way to the bike, anyway I told him I was going to restore the bike (an old Rocky Mountain) and hopefully enjoy it for a while befopre selling it on, anyway when we got to this place he said the strangest thing, he told me I had good energy and that he was going to show me something and that he trusted that I would never tell anyone else about it, I promised to keep it between us and so he took me into this unit.

ALLADINS FUCKING CAVE

Bikse everywhere, frames, wheels, plastic bins full of components, all kinds of stuff, most of it probably garbage but there must have been some reasl treasures in there too because of some of the frames I saw, Kleins, a couple of Mountain Goats, at least one Salsa, possible another and then there were road bikes about which I know little but there were two Roberts there that I saw.

Long story short the Indian guy rented the unit to a Jamaican, the Jamaican used it to stash, strip down and package bikes, some he sold in the UK but most were shipped overseas to contacts in the West indies and the EU.

Anyway the Indian bloke told me this Jamaican was a lying theiving bastard and so were his friends, he said he knew they stole the bikes and he knew they stole from him on occasion, so he liked to sometimes have a dip into their stock as way of restoring karma. He also told me that if I ever wanted to come and have a proper look and sort out a few choice items he would let me have them for the price of a good meal.

Fuck niggers.

the idea is to build a bike where every component is unique, noticable and traceable to you
my wheels are handbuilt by me, three yellow spokes by the valve on each
my frame is custom painted by me
my bars are wrapped in mismatched tape with very deliberate grease stains, you might even find me by fingerprints from that
my cranks have anodizing worn right down to bare alu
my lights are custom and non-removable aside from a standard 18650 tube battery bank powering them
even my fucking chain is personalized, i waxed it with candles from a birthday cake so it's got a pink hue to it
the most expensive thing they can sell is probably brakes, and even that will change once i finish my fully custom 3d printed drop bar hydraulics based on hacked up elixirs (abs can't handle it even when baked, gotta try cf-impregnated plastic, or smaller brakes to have more structure)
nobody will even think of touching something as easily noticable, they'll steal the bso next to it even if my bike is not locked up
>>
>>1721693
lol I've ridden through that part with a white friend. Scared the shit out of hi to the point where he was mad at me. Good times.
>>1721967
Yeah, no. I have one of those uber Kryptonite chains and it barely gets used because when I go for rides, I take my bike inside when I go inside places, especially on Wilshire and Crenshaw. It's mostly used for nigger beating as is.
