My company hires greenhorns through nepotism quite often, which leads to 17-22 years old cooks who’ve never moved away from mammy who can’t boil water, who are somebody’s nephew or cousin, and with maritime companies across the country hiring experienced hands, lots of people have left in the last 6 months so it’s a huge influx of these worthless kids with bad attitudes.

We’re the old men now, Rico.

Also: just coming around the east end of Kodiak and getting my first real cell service in a month…it’s hard to describe the feeling.

Don't admit to any minor health disorders on the 200 item questionnaire in the first few pages. They don't cross reference your personal records, so just lie. You're not depressed, you're not a drunk, etc. Automatic disqualifier/will extend your application process by months while you submit an explanation. Other than that it's a quick and dirty work physical. Touch your toes, stretch, hearing test.
>>
>>1705112
No to everything on the list that won't be obvious or come up during a physical/hearing/vision, you don't do drugs or drink. Most of the physicals I've done are like 10 minutes, dspe6 if you go to a clinic that also does DOT physicals, they really churn out passes for $$

That’s one of the famous “Pepsi ships” of Dutch harbor. They hang out there till they get filled up with pollock and other low grade fish then they return to the mystical Far East from whence they came.
>>1705440
The old guys are broken from doing the hard work when they were young, and they have papers and resumes that theoretically allow them to get a job on another ship pretty fast if they don’t like the duties. Everyone knows the young guys are lucky just to be there and must work to keep the job.

Might have been me, an engie chad. Modern vessels are using PLC setups to control systems like propulsion or controls, or mission specific equipment like factory processing setups.
For someone who’s already a marine engineer, having some PLC knowledge or credentials is a good thing to pad out a resume, but if you aren’t already in the marine industry it’s not gonna get you a shipboard position. You can find work on shoreside support operations.

As far as DC while underway, I havent see that no, the draft of those things is only like 7ft, and most of the damage I saw was far above the water line.

Is this what imposter syndrome feels like? New hire, new to the industry
They made me fire marshal and I just have no idea what I’m supposed to do. I got a list of tasks I have to complete before the month is out and I did them all in two days but I’m still supposed to work 10 hours a day but I have nothing to do, so I just walk around the ship with a notebook, look at random pieces of equipment, nod, and jot down gibberish
I don’t know what an AFFF is, I don’t know how to fix mag sprinklers, and I most certainly do not know the names and uses of all that shit that’s in the fire locker
I can’t even find a fire plan or an inventory or anything and whenever I ask my chief mate he just goes WELL DID YOU CHECK IN THE BLAH BLAH BLAH and I say “yeah” and then he goes HMMMM and walks away
Why can’t I just chip and paint like a normal OS?
>>
>>1708499
Just learn where all the afff systems are and how to manually turn everything on. Who gives a fuck anyway why did they make you fire marshall? Hope you don’t get jail time if you abandon ship during a fire lol. The chief engineer probably knows about the systems.
>>
>>1708501
>why did they make you fire marshall?

>Hope you don’t get jail time if you abandon ship during a fire lol
No way am I abandoning ship, I want this fucking job
The last Fire Marshal was an OS too, it just seems like this job is being passed between retards who don’t know what’s going on. The second the old guy left I realized that a lot of the external fire valves were inoperable, the fire dampers hadn’t been checked in years and were broken, and the guy never figured out compartment numbering and labeled the locations of everything in some odd way I can’t even begin to figure out

Rarely but yes
Anything that is DP1 and able to hold its position will have thrusters, some North American companies operate shuttle tankers which are usually DP1 and of Aframax size (about 100-120K dwt)

Some MR tankers have bowthrusters.
Oceangoing lakers (the 37K dwt type operated by Fednav) have bowthrusters, guess because they're such long bois.

I've come across a small tanker with azipods (like 15k DWT) once, think she was designed to also be a stern-going icebreaking vessel? Some really weird design, used to be Maersk owned. Probably built for purpose and then disposed to some unlucky Arab who didn't know what he was buying. She was as thirsty as an Englishman in Spain too.

That said, I did have a female engineer trainee work for me for a couple hitches and she was pretty cool. Awful face but fit body. Sup gang,
I had this model here in my basement for the last 10 years.

Owned it for almost my entire life but I never knew what exactly it is. I was asuming it was something like a boy layer, or an exploratory vessel. Turns it's like a "fishing guard vessel" for whatever that means. Is there a way to find out more about these? I'd like to know if this was like a class of ships and if any of them did something interesting if there was more of them.

Funnily enough I found a somewhat similar model of the same scale in a French forum but nobody's selling blueprints or kits for this to my knowledge.

if you care, backstory-> It's been built by a great uncle of mine and he died when I was like 5 so I didn't really know him. But he gave it to me in his testament and I had some (dad supervised) fun with it through out my childhood. It's powered by a fist sized electric motor and a motorcycle battery It's gone through a few movings and fallen into a state of moderate superficial disrepair. And I always wanted to fix it up again (I'm into model building as well, a bit) but I have other things on my plate and it would probably feel wrong to replace the 90's electronics (everything moves/lights up) to any degree. I never wanted to part with it, but I think the time has come and I think I'm giving it away to sb more qualified like a boomer collector.

exactly, also bears the same hull number and I've seen this thing in a few different trims. Does that mean it's the same lone ship or are they shared to a degree, like in a class?
For example my model has these roof windows and this one doesn't. It's also flying a German flag, not a french on. Butthen it's built in the 70's and could just have changed hands and received refits. But don't ships usually get different names then too?
>>

So I did some further research and I think I have the number to the french company that holds her curently. How autistic would it be to call them up and ask if they want it? Basically all that has to be done on the model would be stuff to retrofit her to Thalias current setup and scheme.
>>
>>1711832
Honestly they would probably love to have it. A lot of companies have a model or two of their company ships in the main office.
>>
>>1711832
You could do that or just hold it, restore it and leave it to your kids. Although i have no skill to restore it either i would pay someone to do it for me( tho this is the fun part) or get a glass/ plexiglass box and put it for display in my living room as an exquisite item that not all mortals poses

2nd engineer on a ship I worked on a few years ago was hot as fuck, a good worker, and not a total bitch.

My current job has women on the boats all the time, both part of ships crew and as science PAX. I’ve never had a problem with any of them, but the boomer AB’s have sexual harassment claims filed against them from time to time because they’re idiots who go around taking pictures of the chicks like creepy fucks

I actually met my current girlfriend on this ship, though she doesn’t work here anymore

I used to work on container ships as an engineer. Then I started chartering offshore supply vessels. Now I work on FPSO projects, where the contracts are denominated in billions USD. FPSOs are a kind of special ship that collects oil from under the ocean seabed. If any of you want to ask me questions, I will be happy to answer.

You’re kinda fucked compared to how it used to be not long ago. In 2019 they removed the ability for literally any licensed engineer could apply for QMED: all ratings and have it issued with no need to test. From
DDE 1000hp you could skip testing for all the individual QMED ratings.
I will say that I’ve never been particularly challenged by any of the engineering questions that doesn’t rely on diagrams of equipment from before 1970 and expect me to know how it all works despite the reference textbook being practically unobtainable and out of print.
So if you can study the text questions and understand the material it’s not gonna be hard.

You might look for a USN training manual called “Fireman” from the 1970/60s either put out by NAVPERS or NAVTRA whatever they were calling the training publication group at the time. It contains a lot of information on “basic” tools (but specific to ship machine shops/engine rooms) and valves and pumps of the vintage that appears in most of the USCG questions.

Good luck
>>
>>1713588
Ive worked a year in an engineroom and a couple years shoreside, im unlicensed and was just going to take a class or something. Was wondering how many parts the test is and if i should just try to study for it on my own and forget the class, what do you think?
>>
>>1713588
>>1713655
Also i found a book called QMED advanced machine shop from the 90s, wondering if its any good
>>
>>1713655
It’s kinda hard to find but if you dig around on the USCG MMC website you can get a detailed list of all the tests for every license/rating that lists the modules (test sections) for each. Gives subject matter, total # of questions and required # of correct to pass (usually 70%)

>>1713665
Probably a great book. I doubt much if anything has changed for the QMED stuff in decades.
>>
>>1713655
As far as classes go, if it’s something that’s a couple weeks long and several thousand dollars it’s not a good investment if you already have maritime employment and enough sea time for QMED or DDE 1k.

IMO QMED isn’t lucrative enough to justify the expense and only requires like 180 days and really if you’re any kind of wrench turner and not an idiot you don’t need a long class.

OTOH myself and many guys I know got our first license by taking a 4 weeks DDE 4K class, which was absolutely worth it because of how much more money I made immediately after getting the license.

Since then I’ve used “maritime advancement software” to practice for and easily pass DDE any horsepower and 3AE.

Literal low IQ comment. Autonomous shipping trucks are already a real thing and are being more wildly deployed, and have you never heard of drones? Drones will autonomously take off, fly to targets and circle them while an operator will fire missiles / operate SIGINT/ELINT, and then fly itself back and autonomously land. I live on the banks of a wide estuary and I see all the ships pass by every day. I think the tugs are the coolest ngl but the container and bulk carrier ships are really cool too. Also I like the suction dredgers.
I have practically zero experience at sea, and am approaching 30. I would love to some day do a short stint offshore but as far as I can gather you need a fuck ton of training, permits and other technical mathematical shit before you will ever be allowed near a ship.
The only thing I have going for me really is being a paramedic. That's always a plus I guess.

Most people in shipping don't actually like ships so you already have an advantage.

Anyway there's a lot of ways to get involved with shippping. Once there was a company next door from us that supplied ships with all their medicine and first aid stuff that's needed by regulations. They made tons of dosh and in a few months moved out because they grew too big for the office.

Why do abandoned merchant ships and crews just rot in place?

Should the local nation at least repatriate the crews and claim the ships as salvage?
>>
>>1718337
Government beaurocracy.

In normal countries that doesn't happen, there is an auction within a few months and then the ship is sold, crew get their wages and fuck off.

But then there was a Greek guy who bought all his ships at the peak of the market in 2008, for like $60-70m each, and they were worth basically less than $5m each by 2016, he just abandoned them in Djibouti and it took YEARS for things to get sorted.

Usually on the tugs I work on it's situation dependent, if we're entering a new time zone and *staying* in that time zone for decent amount of time (multiple days), we switch, but if we're just dropping something off and going back, we stay on original time.

On the other hand, I did a West Coast to Louisiana run earlier this year and as soon as we left San Fran, we switched to New Orleans time (which is also Panama time)

Obvious solution: build more ports if they don't want them in California, USA, then I'm sure mexico would love to have them unloading ships in Baja California.

Mecico can literally just let China build , own, and operate the port then take a percentage.

Why is this hard?

A short term problem (people having too much money due to stimulus) does not require a long term solution.

People's purchasing power will be eaten away by record high energy prices, inflation and massive increases in rent costs in the coming months.

Recommended pills for seasick? A friend is gonna rent a sailing ship and I get easily dizzy at sea.
Also other recommendations to not ending up puking?

I've not found a pill that works, most of them make me feel worse
someone did give me some sea bands, and while it prevented me from vomiting I got tired of feeling sick
chose a spot by the rails and pretty much power puked the moment I took the sea band off
felt much better afterwards
just had to top up on water and eat an banana
a little bit of lucozade or dried bread helps too

Try those meme glasses with the water at the edges

jesus crist, but hey if it works

Those bands are just placebos. No wonder they didn't help.

Just buy some seasickness pills at a pharmacy. (Dramamine) Dont get thos bullshit natural remedies. Just the real stuff.
Also youll get used to it in a couple of days and tell your friend to use the fucking sails to keep the boat steady.

>Also other recommendations to not ending up puking?
Ginger might help. I don't know if it is true. Most Mariners get use to it over time.
>>
>>1720775
As a bonus, Dramamine also gets you really fucking high if you take like 10 of them. It's like you're on acid but 100x shittier in every way.

iirc its meant to pinch a nerve in the wrist, so it leaves a dent
it did legit prevent me from vomiting, without it I would have chundered at least 30 minutes earlier
but not being able to vomit for so long but still feeling sick was worse than just getting it over and done with

If pills don't work, try eating bananas. They'll taste the same coming up as they did going down.

If you are 40 years old, out of shape, and never worked blue collar, please do not become a fucking OS. If you are 40 years old and can’t figure out a square knot and a figure eight and are so stupid that when I tell you to be outside tomorrow at 0530 you show up tonight at 1730, please do not become an OS. If you are 40 years old and when I ask you to get me some WD-40 and tell you it’s in the paint locker it takes you half an hour to walk around the very tiny ship until you come back and say “I dunno”, do not become an OS. If you are a stupid retard 40 year old who after a month of working still has not a clue what time we get off on a normal workday, literally just eight hours after you start work, and then tells me to my face “oh nobody told me that” even though I personally have told you it three or four times, don’t become an OS.
If you’re a 40 year old and sending your entire paycheck to your girlfriend and her son back home that you just met before you came to sea halfway across the globe, and it’s so bad she’s making you walk four miles to an ATM twice a week so you can send her your wagebucks, don’t become an OS.
Drooling braindead retards can become ordinary seamen. Yet the average Nicaraguan is incapable of it.
I am becoming racist.

Our favorite inspector in Japan was still climbing up and down cargo holds well into his 80's
Capesize 9 holds? No problem
All he needs is a can of sardines

>The companies stated they will not consider fossil gas, or liquified natural gas (LNG), as zero-carbon fuel in their ocean shipping transitions
So what IS a zero carbon fuel? Hydrogen?
>>
>>1722205
Sailing probably or they mustve bought the solar boat meme
>>
>>1722205
It's not zero carbon fuel
It's "net zero" i.e. a scam
Basically they do something that the UN has deemed socially acceptable which gives them enough "good boy points" to offset the ship's emissions

Things that give good boy points are probably stuff like planting trees, planting energy crops (crops that are immediately burned for energy i.e. biomass - fuck starving kids in Africa) or installing renewables.
Of course they won't do any of those they'll just buy credits from companies that do those things or something.

anyone here in the SIU? anything you care to say about it
>>

My company has SIU representation, but paying into the union doesn’t really benefit us unless you file a grievance.
If we got seniority in the hall for paying dues while working at NOAA I’d probably actually join.

Your typical hippy trippy carbon offset bullshit. God, we should have killed all the hippies in the 60s when we had the chance.
