Just bought a brompton, what am I in for?
>>
no you didn't
>>
>>1660162
yes I did
>>
>>1660160
a lot of gay sex.
>>
>>1660160
How to be a Brompton™ owner:

1. if the conversation isn't about Brompton™s, find a way to make it about Brompton™s

2. try to get people to ask the price. if they don't ask, just announce it unsolicited. make sure to immediately follow up with "but it isn't about the price, it was totally worth it"

3. if there isn't a conversation, start one, so you can proceed to step (1)

4. remember that it's not a conversation about Brompton™s unless you complete step (2). if the person starts to run away, chase after them and yell the price. if they were too fast for you, yell the price at anyone within earshot and practice more so this doesn't happen again

5. it is acceptable to start with step (2) if the person sees you coming towards them for no reason and gets scared right away

6. riding the Brompton™ is unnecessary. however if you do insist on riding it, make sure to only ride it in situations where you can complete steps (1) and (2) multiple times per hour. obviously an hour is far too long to be on or near any bike, but keep in mind just standing there with your Brompton™ accosting random pedestrians is allowed to count
>>
For the record I want to state that I bought one purely because I rent a one bed apartment (third floor) and live in central London so I needed something that wont take up space
Anyway, continue posting memes although a genuine review would be nice
>>
>>1660160
>>1660171
I started typing this before you posted >>1660164
, you're doing great, do they ship the manual showing you how to do that or is it just a natural talent that Brompton™ owners are born with?
>>
>>1660174
dude he asked me for proof that I bought one
>>
lol, ignore all the trolling OP
they're great bikes, enjoy yours
people just hate on them because they're expensive
>>
>>1660179
oops I forgot step 7: if the people around you get sick of your constantly mentioning what you paid for your Brompton™ just say they're jealous
>>
>>1660180
see?
>>
>>1660181
it's /n/, people say "you don't bike" or "proof or it didn't happen" to my posts all the time. not once did it occur to me to screenshot the RECEIPT for any of my bikes or bring up the cost unless the discussion was specifically about cost.

even if it was implicitly about cost, like say "should I order a canyon or buy from my LBS" it's understood that people can easily google the cost of a well known bike and that gearheads probably have most of the prices memorized anyway. only Brompton™ people assume everyone around them needs to be blessed with this information at every opportunity. why do you suppose that is?
>>
>>1660182

Hey guys I just bought a CANYUN™ Ultimax (btw it costed about $3000 bet you never had a bike that expensive, not about the price though!). Ok I didn't JUST buy it actually I got it a couple of years ago but it's been over 15 minutes since I brought up the price of my CANYUN™ Ultimax totally unsolicited.

Hey btw have I mentioned what I paid for my CANYUN™ Ultimax? $3000, but it's not about the price. If you have anything to say about this other than WOW YOU MUST BE RICH it means ur jealous of my CANYUN™ Ultimax

I can only think of one use case for these, and that's putting them in a light aircraft to get to and from a country airport into town. (And that's only because you can't take lithium ion batteries otherwise the better choice for that would be a EUC)

iv found most people who own folding bikes dont actually use the folding aspect other than the gimmick of it, or they just didnt want it to take like 30% more space up in wherever they were putting it.

I mean im sure some people actually get them so they can take on buses and whatnot but just noone I know

tl;dr: old world tradition by which aristocrats call attention to the fact that "the rules" are for the peasants, it's not "cute" and it's not "eccentric", it's a celebration of the class hierarchy
>>
>>1661684
Wow.
>I look like shit because I don't follow the rules, and that means I'm an aristocrat.
Why bother with clothes with this logic?
>>
>>1661697
The point is to:
a. wear some expensive garment, to show that you're rich
b. show that you don't care about middle-class values like cleanliness and a careful appearance.

You signal that you're not middle-class, because you're not sharing their values, and because you have expensive stuff, you also signal that you're clearly not working class. Conclusion: You're upper class.
It's especially a middle-finger to the middle-class who have to work hard for their expensive stuff and try to fit in by keeping up appearances. People always need to kick down to the class directly below them, for Boris this is the middle class.

Other way around. If you are an aristocrat (and he very literally is nobility, albeit minor and only in the last few hundred years), then you have a choice to flaunt it, or not. He chooses to flaunt it.
>Why bother with clothes with this logic?
So you understand why this kind of behavior is not "charming" or "cute", then?

You don't leave it, you make a big show of folding it up slowly in front of your office building so as many of your coworkers can see you as possible (be sure to stand right in front of the entrance so people have to walk around you), and you park it somewhere prominently in your office where no one could possibly miss it.

unless you are at least a little bit strong...

I have an old sparta 8/80 as daily driver, made of pressed steel. (pic related)
It's relatively happy, but if you carry that thing on a daily basis, it's no problem at all. Only a bit problematic if you have to take it in a car, because it doesn't fold very small.

Still, at only less than 15% o the money of that brompton, you get a bike that drives way way better. Although I only have 2 gears in the internal hub, it shits on most modern folding bikes, because it has a much more stable frame and large wheels.
It's not good for long-distance driving (although I've been riding it 50+km at night a few times after missing the last train).

>>1662552
I wouldn't know about those tires. With the tiny wheels of folding bicycles, you'd better have a little larger tires. Otherwise it gets a very bumpy ride and you'll easily touch the ground on those small wheels.

It's certainly not for the ride-quality, there's many better folding bikes out there.

no retard, I'm explaining to the poster that wants me to put holes in the wall of my apartment that I would shockingly rather get my large security deposit back than install a bike rack
when you move out of mummy and daddys spare room you'll understand how renting works but until then, keep crying online about people purchasing things you dislike for reasons you cannot comprehend
>>
If you're going to get a folding bike, an expensive one, then get a Montague.
If you want a smaller bike get a Tern.

Bromptons are genuinely a terrible bike and an pointless expense. they also make you look gay, which is good if you are actually a homosexual, but for a straight man it can be a big negative.
>>
>>1663852
>I just wanted the best folding bike and this had unanimously rave reviews
Believing online reviews. It's mostly herd-mentality that these reviews display.

Well, it's the fact that all the time you are trying other people to get jealous on you. You brag about your cute girfriend etc. Appearantly she's only cute and nothing more, because that's the thing you've mentioned multiple times now. It says something about your narcissism. You want to be the perfect picture.
Having a girlfriend isn't that special to me. We all have m. It's like bragging about having a toilet.
It's the fact that you're so desperately looking for approval on 4chan. Probably the worst place to get that.

This thread is absolutely INTERSTELLAR b8. You got lazy with that one though.

My bike cost $2,500CND all up. Just thought I'd throw that out there. I'm super casual, just ride around on MUPs and get groceries and stuff, but I do it a lot. It's been going for like 12 years now and I really appreciate the dependability of a high quality / low performance machine. I don't need to sacrifice everything for portability so a Brompton isn't for me, but I totally get how shelling out for a tool that *really* does what you need it to do long term can make sense.
>>
>>1667057
I'm having a GREAT time.
>>
>>1667236
>does what you need it to do
the problem with OP is that he doesn't really need a folding bike but he fixated on the idea, first looked at a cheap raleigh and after being spoonfed with like the first google result which said it's heavy and doesn't even fold all that compactly he impulse bought a brompton. now he's apparently doing a lot of research into "upgrades" to double down on his decision but he could have done more research beforehand and probably should have gotten a normal bike. for the same money he could've gotten a quite nice road bike. he assumed that a normal bike would take up a ton of space or that he would need to put holes in the wall for a rack but there are racks and stands which don't need a hole in the wall. and some apartments may have storage space on the bottom floor or a bike shed outside.
>>
>>1667241
He bought it as a fashion accessory first, and a bike second
>>
>>1667236
There's lots of reasons to have a bike that is performing well in the category: reliability. Not speed, not lightweight, but heavy built. Great for a city. However, such bikes should never cost you more than 300 euro and should be bought second hand. (new, +/- 1000 euro is max).

>>1667255
Mainly this. And now he comes to /n/ talking about it like we're /fas/. But we ain't gay and we don't like that behaviour here. As >>1667083

Keep spending everything you earn on useless shit and you'll be poor again quickly. Enjoy!

I have a good job and I've got enough money to stop working for 10 next years.
I could spend more, but there's simply nothing I really desire to have. This attitude is the best way out of the rat-race.

Not OP

>>1667778
Yes, folding bicycles are nimble. The smaller wheels yield a much smaller gyroscopical effect.
Also the fact that you go much slower at the same effort makes it feel nimbler.
>>
>>1667807
>you go much slower at the same effort
Do smaller wheels really have much higher rolling resistance?

>makes it feel nimbler
Irrelevant. What matters is whether it actually is nimbler or not.
>>
>>1667807

Cope
>>
>>1667808
Yes, it makes a significant difference. I think this is the case especially on more bumpy roads. Although it is probably less of an issue on well-paved roads.

>Irrelevant. What matters is whether it actually is nimbler or not.
As I said. Learn how a gyroscope works.
Because there is less of a gyroscopical effect, there's less sideways-force required to rotate your handlebars into a corner. You don't have to hang into the corner as much, just to start turning your handlebars.

>>1668660
People that pay 10k for a bike should be scoffed at, unless they riding the tour de France and shit.

>>1668669
Not him and not a poorfag. But basing your self-esteem on the amount of money you have are a clear indication of a total lack of character.
>>
>>1668791
>People that pay 10k for a bike should be scoffed at, unless they riding the tour de France and shit.
it's not even that strange when a normalfag karenmobile is like 50k and a range rover is like 100k. not to mention supercars that cost several hundred thousand or millions. anyone who wants a decent quality bike suitable for an adult can buy a 1k bike. an amateur cycling enthusiast can justify spending 2-3k on a bike without suffering from diminishing returns too much. 10k is not an astronomical step up from that. try not being a fuckup and live a little.
>>
>>1667808
I have a 20" folder, the short wheelbase and small wheels give it a tiny turning radius.
You can drop the foot in the pivot point
>>
>>1668839
???
>an amateur cycling enthusiast can justify spending 2-3k on a bike without suffering from diminishing returns too much
So you just say that it's only up to ~3k that you can spent your money in a meaningful way. So, you agree that spending 10k is a useless waste of money.
>>
>>1668843
3k only gets you a high end aluminium or entry level carbon frame road bike with 105 and entry level carbon wheels or high end alloy wheels. you can easily go higher with a high end carbon frame, di2 groupset, high end carbon wheels, power meter, bike computer etc
>>
>>1668847
Of course, you can always spend more money. The question was: Is it well spent? Or is it just throwing away money because you have no other meaningful way of spending your money. (like spending money on a sports-car or a Rolex, things that don't really have practical value above their cheaper, more practical counterparts)
>>
>>1668849
are you going to take your money with you into the grave? of course you can enjoy a nice bike, car or watch if that's what you're into. newfags will naturally gravitate to more affordable options, the enthusiasts are the type of person who really do their research, they can tell the difference not just between a ferrari and a lambo but between individual models of a ferrari and make nuanced purchasing decisions.
>>
>>1668852
>are you going to take your money with you into the grave?
Stupid US mentality. I'd rather work less and ride more...
>>
>>1668791
And what does sexuality have to do with a bike? Bi polar fucks in here...
