i think they mean relative to the country maybe?
since china and japan both face massive issues with rail, china's issue being that it is massive but it benefits from planes being incompetent and constantly delayed. and japan's issue being that mountains make up most of the country and every flat land available is part of a major city

you are an absolute tard, the entire country is mountains, there are cities built in the mountains, there are cities in valleys and to get to the nearest city you have to go up then down a mountain, there are train tunnels through mountains. Where do you think the alps are?

try and tell a GOOD joke next time, your system shouldnt be outclassed in versatility by one using this thing

At one time we had the greatest passenger rail system on earth. Flagship express trains pulled by steam locomotives kept faster schedules than Amtrak, with gourmet food and onboard barber shops. Regular trains for the plebs ran almost as fast, and branch line trains served every whistle stop town. Pic related was merely an all coach regional train serving Michigan cities, not something like the 20th Century Limited. This is what they took from you...

US privatized freight rail and it became best freight rail in the world.
You just refuse to admit that passenger rail is outdated in the age of airplane and car.

Goto Uetliberg observation tower in Google maps. Loom around Zurich. It's surrounded by hills and mountains.
>>
>>1646134
Not him but the reason we don't have fuck off freight trains is because we don't have fuck off landmass, therefore there's less places to trade/distribute goods to. You want a European country that's comparable then look to Russia
>>
>>1646143

No, unless you count a short period of government control after USA's entry into WW1 that was eventually found to be of more trouble than benefit and therefore wasn't repeated in WW2.

The Swiss had to drill a 20 mile long tunnel to cut the time between Z├╝rich and Milan by an hour.

Staffed exclusively by black porters lol
>>

Europe has much smaller countries, and no huge amounts of freight to carry across vast distances. Much shipping is done by truck because quantity and distance just don't require trains. For longer distances, we do have train freight trains, and in fact, Switzerland is one of the euro countries with the highest proportion of rail freight at 40%, while the US is at about 47%.

However, in Europe we have a lot of people living much closer together and going to many places. How many people fit in a plane? 200? 300? Our 16-car bilevel trains can carry up to 1200. We need our railways to avoid filling our landscape with highways, and clogging the airspace with planes. So it actually makes a lot more sense to think firstly about passenger rail, with freight rail somewhat subordinated.

Who were smart worldly brothers who put their kids through college on the tips they made and were leaders in the community. The Brotherhood of Sleepingcar Porters led by A. Phillip Randolph was a powerful force in the labor and civil rights movement. Even Malcolm X worked as a porter when he was young.

No.
But railroads were heavily regulated. They could not establish price.

Real reason Europe has no proper rail infrastructure. To run such trains it needs BIG axial load capacity, loading gauge also loading and sorting stations supporting long trains. This infrastructure that master for railroads efficiency. Europe has nothing of such. Europe didn't invested into freight infrastructure and it stuck in 19th century. America did. Even more American freight railroasds are private, operate with profit, and made improvement to rail system themselves. EU freight rail is operates at loss, heavily subsidized and has much higher rates.

How are EW IVs so comfy lads?
>>
>>1648079
that's a EuroCity wagon, not a EV IV. but yes, they're comfy indeed. I hope they won't be replaced too soon by double deckers with uncomfy suburban train seats.
>>
>>1648099
ECs have the same interior so stop splitting hairs.
>>
>>1648120
ECs have an armrest in the middle in 2nd class too. Before the revision, you were even able to recline the seats in 2nd class to supercomfy mode. EW IV have these bench like seats, not uncomfortable, but different from ECs and Bpm.
>>
>>1648163
Lies, I regularly take an Intercity and the coaches have armrests in 2nd class
