can't fucking wait for these
Was on a modelling kick up until recently. Trying to get the will to pick back up, but some car projects keep calling my name. Will probably get back to my workbench in the fall, though.
As an American modeling british rail, I wish there were more suppliers here in the US. Any other Americans find ways to get UK models that aren't either $40 Lima's on ebay or $300 Hornbys on ebay?I like Hattons, but I wish there was a better option, the shipping can get a bit high. Hell, if there were a brick and mortar horby stockist in the US I'd drive there, but I can't find it there is any.

>>1635587We had this discussion last thread, models trains are transportation. See pic related and video related from Sam's Trainshttps://youtu.be/YC28xBxcbzw
Oh good, I've been waiting for a new /mtg/, tried the /toy/ one but didn't have much luck there.I'm helping my dad tear down his old, mostly abandoned layout before he sells his house. He wants to start a new layout after he moves so we're trying to salvage as much of the trackwork, switches, etc. as possible. The problem is that pretty much every metal rail joiner on the whole layout is completely fused in place. It's not that big of a deal on flextrack (which makes up most of the layout) since I can just snip a cm or so off the end, but it's a major problem with the switches, and we'd really like to save those in particular since they're the most expensive part. Anybody have any suggestions for getting these things unstuck?
>>1635607vinegar
>>1635662Fuck I feel dumb for not even thinking about that. I was coming up with all kinds of ideas about penetrating oils and heat and stuff but most of that stuff is meant for rust rather than whatever kind of corrosion brass and nickel silver get. I'll give that a try, thanks.

>>1635537I know your pain. I stick to Hatton's because of their trunk service. Every few months I ship mine out using DHL so I get it in like 2 days.Rails of Sheffield is also pretty decent if there's a sale but unlike hattons they don't tell you what the shipping cost is until after you've ordered, and there's no trunk option.
>>1636255Yeah, I love the new trunk service. I tried Rails of Sheffield, since Hattons doesn't have new Bachmann anymore, but I found there prices are a bit high.
Did you see Hornby's new app based DC controller? According to them:Four operating accessories or point motors maybe connected to each PAC unit with the power being supplied by a separate wall mounted transformer. It is possible to connect up to three PAC units to one transformer but this does depend on how much power is being taken by the accessories. Consequently, it may be necessary to add a further power unit.

I'm having a bit of trouble making up my mind here, so I thought I'd post and get some ideas maybe. I want a portable layout that I can build in roughly a months time or so, so that I have something to run trains on and bring around when I don't have room for a permanent layout. I've thought about something like a minories, but thinking about it I'm just not sure that it would be so enjoyable. But I really can't think of a better plan to fill a similar sized space. Ideally I want something that consisted of a terminus station with some kind of intermediate freight drop off areas, but I don't see how I could fit it on a 1 x 7 or 1 x 8 board without sacrificing vital components of this basic design. Should I just go for something different altogether?
>>1640460Does it absolutely have to fit those dimensions? It might make more sense to build it as two separate 2x6 modules or something if you've got room to set that up.
>>1635940I have never tried to put my trains through a table saw, but I will now.>>1635941I live in Australia, so the temperature doesn't change, it's 150F year round. In seriousness tho how do I prevent that?>>1639774Taking that as a complimentAnd yeah, I am OP (of the image, not the thread), just like 15 days on lol.
>>1640865>two separate 2x6 modulesNo way, I don't have anything like that much room. The idea is to have a portable, stowable layout in two 1 x 4 boards or less.
Model train anons, have you ever felt like quitting for good?
>>1635420Look better than Hornby's shite, might pick up a couple...
>>1640990Yes. I just took some time away from it. Best thing to do it just take a brake & come back to it when you feel ready. Never force yourself to do model railways imho
>>1640868>how do I prevent thathumidifier/dehumidifier to keep a constant humidity is the best defence after straight up climate control.
>>1640997THIS. I got good advice recently on if you're in the doldrums of not doing much: just 15-20 minutes/day or every-other-day and you'll feel more accomplished. If still feeling out of it, just leave it alone for a while until you're feeling it again. Personally, I've been doing the 12-20 minutes every few days method as I hadn't had my heart entirely into model trains recently. Too much classic car stuff taking my time and mind away.
>>1640937Ah gotcha, I thought you were saying you were going to do it as a single 1x7 board. The closest thing I've seen that seems like it works well is Hornby Magazine's Ffestiniog-inspired layout, seems to be about the size you want and it's got some decent operational interest. It's a narrow gauge layout with very small rolling stock though and might not be as nice with full-size trains. This video shows them adding another section to it but you get a good look at the original configuration near the beginning of the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tbv4MQdGcpY

>>1640997>>1641161My enthusiasm for this hobby has been going up and down a lot over the last 10 years or so. On top of still living in a tiny dorm room, there's a lot of things which need to be fixed or adjusted.>racked up a decent amount of various locomotives from different eras (about 25, one EMU included)>few of them are ready to use>a decent number already received a new decoder, but need parameter adjustments>didn't have a proper control station until recently, therefore no means to make the CV adjustments>some models still need a full programm with complete clean-up, new lighting, decoder and a rebuild of their motors to DC to work with decent decoders>basically a redo of entire insides>most railcars owned now have DC axles and need minor adjustments in width to not derail on AC tracks>about 70 passenger cars (mostly 4-axle) and 30 freight cars need said adjustmentAnd then there's also my autistic brain which simply won't shut up>rolling stock can be categorized in 3 different consecutive time periods, same railroad company>want to focus on one period to be able to mix and match as much as possible and avoid fix compositions that can't be changed and combined>also don't want to bloat up my collection too much and get away from the habit of needing everything>w-which one do I go forInstead of focusing on what I already have, I still buy new stuff every now and then just to get rid of it again after some time, because I feel pressured by above on top of having depressing thoughts about my spending habits. Sizing down a bit before going into a hiatus was also on my mind, but second greentext doesn't make it easy for me to make a decision which models I want to let go for good.>>1641199>I think your cat might be brokenPerfectly represent my thoughts on /mt/ then kek
>>1640460>>1641191In the end I went for longer and smoother station platforms closer to the original plan. There will be a 3 track traverser off past the tunnel throat, hidden by maybe 10 inches of tunnel. I almost went with the original design without a kickback siding but I want to be able to run goods traffic on it.
>>1635762Lets say I want to kitbash one of these guys in N gauge (I've got a sizable collection in US N already and don't want to mingle in two track sizes, so 1:76 is out of the question. Would pic related (An LMS 4F) be a suitable donor body? I'd probably see if I could get one of the 812 models on Shapeways meant for 1:76 scale scaled down to UK N scale to use as a basis, even if it wouldn't be perfectly in scale to my US collection.
>>1644569Sure, it could work. I'm pretty sure awdry made his own model with a 4F, but it did require a lot of cutting.
>>1644569I would have a look at some of the Union Mills range first, they do a vast amount of 0-6-0 tender engines so you'll probably find something that's a much closer starting point, their J25 (pic related) looks like a good bet, plus they are tender driven so you wont have to work around the mechanism like you would have to with the Farish 4f
>>1644816>>1644957Actually, do you think it'd be wiser for me to wait for a Bachmann James and use that as a base and just chop off the lead wheels? It'd be far easier for to track down (T. -Murrican) and probably a bit cheaper.

Hey friends where to get cheap ("toy" quality) jap models? Everything is expensive as heck thanksLooking for pic related btw
>>1646630Here is a pic from the Kyoto Railway Museum in exchange for shitting up your thread
>>1646630Tomix products seem reasonably priced, even with mail order to the U.S. Prices and shipping were even cheaper pre-plague but still aren’t bad. Tomix is the budget alternative to Kato so I don’t know what’s below that in the food chain apart from cheap non-powered toys.
>>1646630Greenmax or TomyTec would be my go-to for "toy" quality, and should be cheaper. HobbySearch is an online storefront that doubles as a pretty impressive database of Japanese N-gauge trainsets, so you can get the set number from there and try search Amazon JP or other online marketplaces for new or used sets (assuming HobbySearch doesn't already have one at an acceptable price).Tomix is TomyTec's model-quality brand and Kato's direct competition. They constantly pass each other in terms of quality and price.
>>1646690>>1646674Thanks bros. I went to the TamTam in Akiba but couldn't find the exact line I was looking for, so left empty handed :^(
>>1646693>>1646630Okay I guess I should mention O really am looking for cheap, unpowered. Just something to sit on my desk.
What kind of track do you recommend for a beginner doing HO, MTG? I have a cheap (low quality, too) track oval, but I want something more. Any track packs or simple layout plans you suggest? I've been looking at different manufacturers, but I'm having issues understanding the best way to plan layouts. Thanks!
>>1646693>>1646699Oh shit, you're actually in Japan? Try Popondetta, IIRC they have a pretty big new and used selection as well. The Akiba Cultures Zone building also has a floor for nothing but model trains. There's also several model rail shops in Nakano Broadway that would be worth a look.

how do i get the space to build a model train? ive loved them my entire life, but i just dont have space to set one up. ive been trying to find games to get my fix like transport fever, but the economy in that game is shit so i cant keep it going.used to play lego loco when i was younger to get some of my fix.
>>1647623yes unless IC Swallow livery or older
>>1647650There's a game on Steam that has filled the void after moving to a small apartment called Rolling Line. You can build you own model train layout on it. It's a bit wonky since it's meant for VR, and they have no UK locos, but its a pretty fun game.
>>1647170It would be 16.5/3.5 = 4.8mm/ft scale I think.S scale on HO track is pretty common in Australia and NZ.Not much space in japanese houses for anything larger than N gauge though
>>1647737this
>>1635420Sam's Trains had just posted reviews about samples of these. Looks so good and the variety is amazing
>>1647361You'd have to lay narrow or dual gauge track and get equipment in HOn3.5 gauge. The former is possible and in fact HOn3.5 gauge track is the same gauge as TT scale track. It's the equipment that's the problem, but it is somewhat possible. You could use 3d printers to make shells, trucks, and details and use TT scale chassis's for the mechanisms. This is what we do for HOn30 stuff, using N scale mechanisms and 3d printing. Of course I don't what what the TT scale market is like, at least in N scale there's no shortage of good chassis's to use.
>>1647650You can get a lot in a small space with N scale, especially if you have shorter cars and locos or trams. Shelf layouts don’t take up a lot of room. Another option is modular systems like T-Trak where you build modules to a standard then join them up with your train bros at meets to build large layouts, and of course they can be part of a smaller home setup.
>>1647765I've played this a few times. Not a lot of options, but still kind of fun.

With the amount of space to play with a in a fucking 9f they could have easily done that here, and not only would you be able to have some cab detail again, but it would shift some more weight back into the loco where it might actually have some pulling power instead of being absolutely shit on by a nearly 50 year old model

>>1657706>Dont model in such a small gaugeBasically this. Most N scale stuff doesn't look great anyway.
>>1657706>>1657761>just get bigger models, duhOh wow, what an idea, why didn't I think of that? lemme just rip up my N gauge layout and replace it with a 00 one where I can only have 4 coach long trains, genius.Yeah N scale has some limitations, but the reason we're getting pissed off is because UK manufacturers constantly keep churning out half arsed shit. The technology exists to make N scale models that are just as good as their 00/HO counterparts, the quality of Japanese, European and even some US N gauge has been shitting on the UK for literal decades, but Bachmann and Dapol don't care because they are the only 2 main companies making UK outline stuff so you either buy their shit, or learn to get real good at scratch building.
>>1657868>scratch buildingScratch building and kitbashing is a lot of fun. Just because you're in N scale doesn't mean you're forced to only run rtr models straight out of the box.

>>1661889That and US locomotives are huge in comparison to UK locomotives.Which in model form translates to more room to fit motors and mechanisms.
>>1662297not exactly, US N is 1:160, whereas UK N is 1:148, which means despite USA's larger loading gauge a lot of stuff ends up around the same size, obviously the stuff which is absolutely titanic in real life might still end up larger but for the most part the physical size of the models is the same
I'm tempted to break my Brass virginity, do I grab the H-10a or H-10b? The H-10b is $50 more than the H-10a but I like the way both look.
>>1662415For the amount of money you're spending on a brass locomotive you would think they would come painted. I mean I get being able to customize or get minute prototypical details, but if you're paying out your ass for correct prototypical details on a brass wouldn't a paint job also be expected to be prototypical correct? It just seems ass backwards to buy something so expensive just to dissemble it and give it an amateurish paint job. I guess it's fine if you're buying dozens of them and well experienced at painting, but for a first time buyer or someone inexperienced it seems like a massive hurdle.
>>1662489Because the model train market is fucked. Shitty manufacturers shitting out cheap plastic from China made by a bunch of Chinese slave kids who've never seen a steam loco in there life. The brass stuff is even worse. You're paying way too much money for a product that the market really wants, and in return you get this crap that not even finished. If they would paint it, itd be another $200. Fuck model train manufacturers.
>>1662667If you have the money for brass an extra $200 is worth it - if I could afford to throw away money on brass an extra $200 is nothing. For me when it comes to brass I would want to be able to go all in or not at all. If money is an issue then there's no point going into brass - unless I had the painting and detailing skills. But even that requires money because you need something to practice on and even the "cheap" garbage plastic chinc shit isnt cheap. Then there's paint.I would like to buy a bunch of cheap used shit, but even that is overpriced these days. Recently I sold a bunch of nscale rolling stock and locomotives on ebay and I was appalled by how much others were asking for the like products I was off loading. I wouldnt have even paid my own prices and I listed everything extremely cheap relative to other sellers.
>>1662667>>1662725That model I picked out isn't much different in price compared to a similarly size retail model (295/350 for the H-10s, 280 for a Broadway Limited Mikado), and I have no problem painting since I've been doing model kits for a long time now. I'd have to drop another $40 or so if I wanted to throw a DCC decoder in once I get a DCC setup but that's a road I won't mind going down later on. The thing with the brass market is that in some cases that's going to be the only source of certain prototypes in N scale (ie: those H-10s, NYC Niagaras, B&O streamlined Pacifics, Camelbacks, DD-1s, etc). Sure 3D printing is coming along well, but there's no guarantee someone on Shapeways will make the locomotive you want.
>>1662736>CamelbacksI don't even think those are easy to find non-brass in HO either.I'm surprised BLI hasn't put one out yet. Guess they're too busy circle jerking over thier garbage electronics and fantasy schemes of past prototypes. I'm hoping they get a wake up call when Scaletrains finally enters the steam market. It's going to be hilarious when they put out a more accurate PRR 2-8-0 than BLI did.Granted I haven't tried out the new Paragon 4 decoders, but that company really likes to stand by its shitty manufacturers.
What the best way to clean Kato unitrack? Dish soap? Any suggestions?
>>1662736>Camelbacks,N scale kitbash
>>1663755Isopropyl alcohol. Maybe an eraser or Bright Boy if it’s really grimy but you should try not to use anything abrasive. There’s also track cleaning cars but I haven’t used one.
>>1663755this if you're in aus. essentially lighter fluid, cuts through track dirt like butter and can be used to clean up spilt oils and shit too.

sick to death of painting track. no combination of brown or black or grey i use seems to work to make convincing sleeper+ballast colour
>>1667788What have you tried, and what colour/prototype are you shooting for?
>>1668430i don't have an airbrush or anything so i've just been brush painting tracks and ballast with different acrylics and acrylic washes at varying levels of watered-downness. vallejo leather brown works well for the sides of the rails but apart from that it's difficult to get my desired effect which is similar to that of a typical british heritage line like in pic related though perhaps a bit less brown overall. the main problem is different colours don't seem to blend well together no matter how i water them down or mix them together manually
anyone else have this problem
>>1670755oh lawd
>>1670755Not yet, don't even have my benchwork finished yet. Life's been getting in the way
*ahem*FUCK Hornby.
>>1670808What did they do this time.
>>1670816Well they bend the knee to the gays. Hornby makes all this stupid pride shit.
>>1670824only cause they got caught, their pride wagon didn't support lgbt at all until they got called out, they were literally just taking gay money, pretty based if you ask me
>>1668717Get an airbrush, you can get a good one and an adequate compressor for the price of a single decent loco.
>>1670816They set up a tier system ranking shops based on cleanliness and how many Hornby products they stock. Tier 1 shops obviously gets the most allocated stock. Tier 3 doesn't get shit because they're unclean/disorganized/etc. Problem is Tier 3 is also where any store that sells a competing product is placed. For example, Hattons is being fucked by Hornby into Tier 3 because Hattons is making their own line of 4 and 6 wheeled coaches. Hornby is now limiting how much product Hattons is getting because of this, which means they've had to cancel pre-orders.https://youtu.be/NJy3CATbDAc?t=30
>>1670755no because im not a fag cat owner
>>1670878To add to this, Hattons were working on their coaches WAY before hornby decided to make some, and this also fucks over Rails of Sheffield because of their Terriers, which hornby did exactly the same thing with (Rails started development first, hornby jumps in and speedruns developing their own to hit the market first)>>1670808I don't model 00 but Simon Kohler gets on my tits in the worst way, that james may program a while back that painted him as some kind of hero fighting back against the 'evil' independent model companies pretty much made sure I'd never buy a single a thing from them, even if it was the scale I model, fuck them
>>1670885nigga you play with model trains. we all play with model trains. that bumps us all up a bit higher on the fag-o-meter

i fucking love oxford rail lads. their wagons are so fucking cheap and so much more detailed than what hornby and bachmann sell for up to twice as much

I'm not really interested in a model rail circuit layout, but just want to display some locomotives I personally love in a glass case display.Who makes the most accurate and detailed locomotives of say German Japanese or Swiss railways in HO scale?

>>1635967I assume it's due to the internals. Do you know what exactly makes steam generally more expensive? Is it due to requiring more compact materials?
>>1676378if anything a steam loco's internals should cost less than a diesel simply because there's less stuff there. you don't usually get dual flywheels and big chunky 5 pole motors in a steam loco

where the fuck can I buy Korail models? like are they all just custom? surely someone has to sell them.
>>1676752From what I've found they are all custom. Apparently no one in Korea model trains so they don't many. Get scratch building, anon.
>>1678497are there all north American equivalent of Korail's trains?
>>1678846I know the Brazilian manufacturer Frateschi makes some engines which look similar to the engine in the photo and some other older Korail locos. As for some of the electric locos, I believe Marklin/Trix makes some similar locos.
>>1676752Korail operates license-built copies of Siemens Eurosprinter, so it's easy to get a base for a model.
>>1670755I'm only just planning my first model but my idea is to build a sort of double-paneled wall around the base so that I can set an acrylic panel on top.
>>1635420does anyone know of any sites other than ebay where i can get British Locomotives? American here
>>1679926Fellow Ameribro here. I use Hattons because they offer DHL shipping, and have a trunk system where you can buy shit and they'll hold it until you want to ship it. Rails of Sheffield is also recommended.

First time figuring out benchwork lads, gonna do wood framework with an insulation foam base. Got a few questions for ya though>Are the middle set of legs (Going to be H-shaped legs drilled together) redundant or can I get by with using just the two on the outer sections if I drill the 48x30 bit to them?>Do I need more legs? Particularly in the overhangs >How easy is it to do a curved fascia? In theory I could save some cash on not grabbing wood for the triangular areas and instead just do a curved fascia wrapping around the straight parts of the baseboard, no?
>>1682750Curved fascia is easy, just cut 1/8 MDF or equivalent into 12" wide planks, it's pretty flexible so just bend it around the front of the layout. As for legs, the risk of the overhang is if someone leans on them (maybe when reaching into the layout to pick up a train, paint or adjust something etc) so it depends on how well attached the cantilevered part is. Assuming the blue rectangles are just for track planning on not separate pieces of wood it's probably OK since your longest span is only about 4 feet. That said, putting a few more legs on is cheap insurance. Maybe a post in the center of the 36x72 rectangle and another towards the south end of the 30x36 on the right hand side
Does anyone know where I could buy an unlettered G-scale Bachmann industrial mogul (pic related)? It seems to be currently out of production so my only hope is to get a used one. I am hoping to decorate it and some unlettered Jackson Sharp coaches in Boston & Maine livery.
>>1683497See if Trainworld has any in stock. They sell a lot of Bachmann G scale. If you come up empty you might be able to get a lettered version and remove the lettering with a q tip and isopropyl alcohol. I was able to get the lettering off a Bachmann G scale without damaging the paint underneath.
>>1682188the only two railroad focused games ive played are lego loco and sid meier's locomotioni tried transport fever because i thought it would satisfy the trains itch, but its just a shitty game where you lose a bunch of money for no reason (and this is the case 99% of the time, so you cant stay profitable).
>>1685576get into openttd 99% chance there'll be mods that cover an insanely specific railroad/railway and era that you'd want to larp
>>1685728OpenTTD JGR patch fixes a lot along with FIRS. My favorite feature is automatically spaced time tables for trains with shared orders. Works like a charm even on single track routes with evenly spaced passing loops. Programmable signals too makes a difference to override the path finder.>>1685576I too were disappointed by Transport Fever. Had to mod it to get a decent alignment designer, and the gameplay and industries just feel so lacking, even if many of the aspects of the game are polished.
>>1685576Other options are:Railway Empire (simple but fun)Mashinky (More like TTD, in development)Voxel Tycoon (Same as above, but a little too simple IMO)
>>1685742ill have to look at those. thanksi thought about buying one of those train sim games, but people shit all over them in the reviews, and the massive amount of dlc turns me off>>1685734>the gameplay and industries just feel so lackingcompletely agree. if you dont get really lucky on location spawns, you are never going to profit, and thats it for that map.>>1685728i briefly tried it when it first got put on steam, and have yet to get back to it. ill give it a shot.
Is there a demand for american scenery in 00 scale? I've been convinced to put the stuff I've been selling the local boomers on shapeways and was wondering if it's worth is to include 00 since it's British.
