What do you guys wear to stay warm/warmer when riding? Whenever I try and ride in 45F or below weather, even wearing all kinds of clothes and whatever else, I always still end up cold as fuck and I can't stand it. it seems like no amount of clothing really even helps, or buying specific "cold weather" gear doesn't actually do much of anything. >>1632874>Why do people do this to themselves? Some people are highly suggestible by nature, so they get memed real easy and real hard, they get something into their brain - no matter how it got there, shitposting on 4chan or jew marketing campaign, to them it's all the same - they can't relax until they fulfilled whatever consoomer urge has been awakened.THEY KNOW carbon is an absurd material for a bike unless it's for a pro, the shit is provided for free of charge and your earnings depend upon every millisecond off the lap time.THEY KNOW that even a slight knock can cause catastrophic structural damage that may remain undetected until the moment they suddenly find themselves skidding face first across the tarmac collecting what remain of their teeth in their belt.THEY KNOW it's a fucking meme that makes no sense at all, but they can't overwrite the lines of code already running in their pea brains. >>1632879That's a 1989 model with tange frame and chromoly fork, a very very nice bike, like the other anon says you won't need to do much at all, if you were to buy something of equivalent quality today (frame set only) you'd be looking to spend £200-£300+, the rust looks entirely superficial, you could tidy it up with just an afternoons work and a few quid spent on primer and paint.I'd say give it the once over, make sure there's no cracks etc and if the frame is sound bite his hand off. Change all inner cables, get a new chain, service brakes, bottom bracket and gears etc, change only what needs changing and you have a very capable gravel bike right there, better than most of the new shite you see shilled on here.
>>1632901>very very nice bikelets not get ahead of ourselvesit's the lowest model, with like ex or stx or something. Not deore or XT. Plastic brake levers for example. It's like entry level of good. >>1632902For £80 anon? Spend another £50-80 on it, there are some nice deals out there at the moment for decent condition XT componentry, it would be fairly cheap and easy to elevate that bike into something worth much more than the sum of its parts.

>>1633344£150, 200 absolute max? It's a nice bike but probably a project if you really want it running nicely. personally the nickel plating or whatever just doesn't really do it for me.
Why the fuck are mountain bikes so expensive now? Last time I bought a bike was 10 years ago. I paid $700 and thought I was buying something middle-of-the-road in terms of quality. I bike snob I knew at the time bragged that he spent $3000 on a Cannondale. Now I go to look for a middle-of-the-road mountain bike and the average price is $5000. High end bikes are $12000-13000. I know that there's such a thing as inflation, but that's insane. You would think that with all the Chinese shit out there that the competition would have driven the prices down. Why the fuck should I pay more than $1000 for a bike?
>>1633356Well what kind of riding do you want to do? You shouldn't necessarily.
>>1633346seller priced it at 1200€, is that too high?
>>1633356>with all the Chinese shit out thereIt never really made or makes sense how cheap a lot of chinese stuff was/is.
>>1633358Nothing too extreme. Most of the riding I foresee would be on flat paved or dirt roads. There is one river valley nearby that I would be crossing regularly using a rocky trail. I would prefer a full suspension bike because I don't see why I should volunteer to have my taint pulverized just to purity signal.
>>1633364Yeah so, as you describe, if you're not actually doing serious mtb riding, then an entry level 8/9 speed hardtail is really pretty good now for you. Now you just need to reconcile the fact that you neither need nor can afford an expensive bike, and yet you think you should be riding one for your image and sense of self worth. I guess, maybe go outside and scream ? Or try steal a bike? Or borrow some money?
>>1633364FS bikes suck ass to ride on anything other than downhill trails man. If you want your ride to be smooth that's best done using big tires at lower pressure. Suspension on a bike doesn't work like suspension on a car. Don't get a FS bike for paved and light dirt/gravel, that's just not going to be a good time. If you want something cheap-ish, easy to maintain and fairly comfortable, get a 90s rigid mtb, put some 2" tires on there and a comfy saddle
>>1633368I basically agree with you but XC fullies do exist and they're pretty nice. You don't get pedal bob.
>>1633368This is great advice, but it'll be ignored because it doesn't say what the listener wants to hear. I don't know what it is about front shocks, especially cheapo ones, they are heavy, exppensive comparatively, prettyy bad at what they are meant to do, another potential point of failure, more maintenance costs going forwards, they sap your energy on anything other than downhill surfaces. They are completely stupid things to not only have but to actively seek out.Of course if you're hitting mountain trails on a regular basis but only have the cash or space for one bike then OK, sure, your passion for offroading might make the discomfort, inconvenience and frankly tedious road usage worth it, but even then... holy shit what's the point, just tell him to get his shitty meme forks and then come back in a year to tell us all how right we were and how he wished he'd listened. You can lead a horse to water and all that..
I looked through the local second hand bike classifeds. Out of 132 posts I found exactly one 90's rigid mtb for sale.
Lads, is this worth a punt? Titanium frame, XT and other top tier componentry, looks pretty sweet, currently at £410 with 3 hours left, I could stretch to £500, what's it worth in real terms and then I'll add my personal lust into the equation.https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rock-Lobster-Team-Ti-MTB-retro-classic/164792204574?

>>1633373for what ?
>>1633378For downhill trail riding of course, in the peaks round here (Matlock Bath).
>>1633379i mean yeah man? If you don't already have a decent more modern mtb. For that use i'd probably rather have 1 nice thing than cobble together a bike collection and the collectable nature of that bike to me is not that high. but purely practically as a first nice mtb for the price, yes
What are some bike brands that I should avoid at all costs? I would like something to commute around the town.

But most cheap shocks don't have a lockout, you really only get that if you go midrange, and if he doesn't want to spend more than 1k he's not going to get a good shock, it'll be something really shitty

>>1633878You literally didn't say 1 helpful thing. The man is looking at the bike on a product page. He can just read what the specs are. >>1633852I would much much rather tour on drop bars, but that bike otherwise, is excellent. Near perfect. Especially the fact you get a handbuilt high spoke count wheelset with deore hubs. That's the weak point on a lot of cheaper touring builds and the most common serious failure on touring bikes in general. And with silver spokes and rims those look great. The one thing i'd suggest you consider if they offer it is speccing a dynamo hub for lights. Maybe also asking to spec metal fenders, or set those up yourself, they cost a bit more but function and look better. Also, if faced with a price gap between 9spd and 10spd, the 10spd deore components are better, but 9 speed ones are more compatible and still quite good. So i would happily have, and even situationally prefer alivio/altus spec on a touring bike. I also dislike that rear rack. The better touring racks have dual sets of parallel rails, so you can run panniers, and the panniers hook onto the bottom rail and don't mire things on the racktop. That lowrider rack is well designed though.
>>1633860Stops the front wheel from turning and making the bike fall over when you leave it standing with just the kickstand supporting it. It's more commonly seen on city bikes in areas where you can just lock the bike standing by itself, rather than locking it to something
>>1633860stabilizes the front steering, stops the heavy loaded front end swinging around and falling over quite so easily. It's a good idea kind of but really it's unnecessary when riding and when parked you should just strap your front wheel to the down-tube to achieve the same thing but more secure.
>>1633852ok two more things i dislike about this bikefirstly, they spec a deore rear derailer which doesn't have a barrel adjuster. So the only barrell adjuster is on the shifters. But they don't put a barrell adjuster on the cable stop. What if you run bar end shifters in future? Boom, doesn't work, have to use some janky inline bullshit and those slip. Fucking stupid. Secondly, bottle cage placement. They are wasting all this space. The seat tube cage should be as low as possible. And the downtube cage should be hard up against it. A LOT of people run frame bags and that would give you more space for one, especially if you use big bottles. And give better low weight distrobution. Mention these things to them please.
>>1633878>third-world variation of Deore>the trekking version of deore is bad for a trekking bike are you even listening to yourself

>>1633890>>1633896thanks for the advice. The specc on their site is the suggested one, and i think i'll probably discuss changing some of it from the suggested when i talk to them, ie racks and fenders. im a flat bar man myself so the lack of drops or stop barrel adjuster doesn't really bother me too much. Dynamo hubs would be nice, but i don't think its something i would be able to afford at the moment. one of things i'll make sure to talk about is making sure its built / specced in a way which can be upgraded, as i think this will be a long term investment for me. definitely also considering asking for 9 speed over 10 for ease of finding components if i ever decide to venture out of western Europe with it. I've not made the decision to buy it yet, i think i'll only know after the test ride and get a feel for it. I do know two other people who have brought them and they were pretty happy with them, touring around the world with them. but i'll see how it is in real life.

>>16317603 questions:- the chain of one of my bikes seems to have enlengthened or some shit, because it keeps sort of "skipping" . how do I determine the cause of the problem? I made a video and it's clear to me that the pin falls on top of the sprockets teeth and sort of jumps when I apply a lot of force.- I actually have 2 trek bikes and because of the above I want to use the chain from one bike in the other. how do I find out if they are compatible? are all chains compatible?- how do i buy a new chain? what are the specs/measures for these things? how the fuck do I find them? what are some keyword to find replacement parts?
>>1634144If climbing is even a concern at all for you whatsoever, get the Jeffsy. The Capra is a lot of fucking bike and the jeffsy itself can handle bike park duty
>>1634262firstly if your chain is skipping you've left changing it WAY too late and will need to replace your chain and your cassette. The badly worn chain will have badly worn your cassette and a new chain will skip on it as well. You'll be lucky if your chainrings don't skip too, although try it and see. Secondly you should buy this, a chain wear tool, it's like a $5 thing and it tells you when your chain needs replacing. If you replace chains on time, then your cassettes and chainrings (much more expensive) last a lot longer. thirdly chains are basically all compatible for the number of cogs on your cassette, 7,8,9 etc. 7 and 8 speed chains are compatibleI would recommend KMC brand as they're easier to change. You also need a chain breaker tool to cut it to size when installing. Look at Sheldon Brown for how to size a chain. and overhaul your jockey wheels when you change it. You can look at RJ the bike guy for tutorials on youtube about how to change a cassette.

>>1634289>I have no idea what that means t b h. this is a trek marlin 5, it has 7x3 speedsSo you have a 7 speed cassette. So you need a 7 or 8 speed chain. >$50should be more like $15>is it not possible to change only a couple of chainrings?chainrings are in the front. You have a cassette (or a freewheel) in the back, which have cogs. And technically yes, functionally, no, you change the whole thing. A 7 speed shimano one, cassette or freewheel, is not particularly expensive. Nor are the tools to change. Again, sheldon or RJ. You could chance it, and just put on a new chain first, if it doesn't skip, ok, if it does, you need to change the cassette/freewheel.

>>1634345No idea what it's worth in real terms, but it's a pretty bike that would be a beauty with a bit of TLC, if it's local it's got to be worth a test ride if nothing else. If you decide to buy it bring up the rust and make an opening offer of about $120, but i'd probably pay the 200 if he dug his heels in, looks like a lot of potential there for a nice summer bike.

>>1634741I would go for it. The issue to look out for is a rim width which limits you to plus size tires. So work out what you're getting. It changes between models. I think 2" is ideal for mixed gravel/road touring and anything bigger than 2.3 is just a drag.

>>1631760I'm a clueless beginner who is trying to buy a cheap and simple single speed bike for my short urban daily commute. I found one that fits my needs and budget, but I'm not sure which frame size I should go for. I'm 180cm/5'11 inch tall and my inside leg measures around 85-86cm, so the ideal single speed/fixie bike frame size (based on some chart I found) is 56cm.Sadly, this bike isn't available in that size. 54 and 58cm are my only options. Which one should I go for? Slightly bigger or slightly smaller?
how did I do? bike was $1782 year coverage (whatever that means) for $18rode it 13-14 miles in the city and was very pleased. It's my first road bike. the old school shifters are tricky because I have to take my hand off the bars, other than that it did good
>>1635164your legs are long for your height. This means that your torso is probably short for your height. Thus, I suggest buying a smaller bike, which will have the handlebars closer to the saddle, thus accommodating your shorter torso. Leg length isn't a problem, you can merely raise the seatpost (within the minimum insertion depth). (the distance of the handlebars to the saddle is adjustable, but requires changing out the stem, which is tricky if you aren't buying from a bike shop). Furthermore: in general, smaller bikes are easier to adjust for larger riders, so it's always the safer option.Of course, if you're buying directly from a shop, just try them out and have the shop help you pick what fits best.

>>1635103the main thing that makes road bikes fast is aerodynamic and efficient pedaling body positioning from drop bars and their overall geometry. You're not -really- getting that on a unit either. It IS a rigid mtb. Perfect for your supposed use case. It's not a 'versatile' version of a mtb or a road bike. That's a ridiculous idea. ALL bikes are versatile. It simply fits within its own niche. Maybe you want pic rel instead though.
>>1635088I met someone on tour who had one and he hated it and hacksawed off the front part. >>1635190GRX is the shimano gravel groupsetIt has hydraulic disc brakes and ability to run slightly wider gearing than the road groups, and the derailers work better over bumpsSora/Claris are specced on lower end gravel bikes. They're fine but you often get chinked on brakes. Basically you want a gravel bike, and you're on the fence between those two levels of spec for price, say with a Giant Revolt 1 vs 2. I'd also suggest you look used at high-end steel touring and meme bike builds because people often sell those at well below cost of parts to build and that would suit your purposes well too.

Ie, paying new bikes price for what would have been a $3000-$5000+ bike. People regret sell those pretty often. Really though, a new modern allum/carbon gravel bike like a revolt is very good for the money, just it's a bit sketchier if you crash it than steel. The classic steel route makes sense if you luck out on a find, but only if you'll enjoy a project and atleast try to do most of the work yourself. I'd offer to look through gumtree for you but fuck gumtree. If you find things you're thinking about post em here and we can give hot takes.

are tektro brakes as utter dogshit as they used to be? swore off them a while ago but i've found a gravel bike i like and the only 'issue' i have with it is the tektro brakes (MD-C500 Dual Piston to be exact), but given this is just for light gravel i assume i can be less picky than with my mtbs
>>1635250M A X X I S
>>1635250The Unit X has the lowest-tier Eagle groupset and Level brakes, while the road has Rival, which is solidly mid-tier, with better shifting and braking. Also it's around 3 pounds heavier. SRAM's road group is something you should try before you buy, though. I really dislike the controls. They don't fit well in my hands and the doubletap shifting sucks, particularly on rough terrain. For multi-day bikepacking trips I like the Unit more, honestly, tho I'd really prefer something with Deore, like a Breezer Thunder. For riding trails but not racing, and you're routinely encountering stuff where tires wider than 50mm are good to have, drop bars don't make much sense to me, compared to flat or trekking.
>>1635340i drafted a guy who was sramed the other day every shift he made was painful *wait* THUNK
>>1635308not bad. be careful while shifting, because those aren't components meant for a 1x setup, so there's a high risk of dropping the chain. consider rotating the brake levers forward a bit, so your wrists are in a more natural positionalso small tip, on most brake calipers there's a little round nut with flat sides which you can grab with a cone spanner or one of those cheap multi-spanners to adjust the caliper's position without having to loosen it or anythingpic is the cheap spanner I'm talking about, they usually come for free on brand new walmart-tier bikes
>>1635164>>1635180Looks like you've made the right choice, but I'm the same height and inside leg as you. I went for 56 cm and it was a bit too big. I now ride 54 cm and it's perfect. Just wanted to let you know that you've made the right choice bro
>>1635003he's full of shit about the weight, the frame isn't the whole story, 15 lbs is hard to hit with those shitty components
>>1635011>you don't ask more money for a car because you've just done the timing belt
>>1635003>Wow, was it impossible to find out the weight of this bike, or what?! The guys at the store didn't know - all they knew was that the Team Squadra [odd name: 'Team-Team'...] was supposedly 16½lb. So I listed the differences in build-up between the Squadra and the 'Team-Team'[!], ok, the 'Team Squadra', and from the various manufacturer's sites, I came up with a 475g difference, making the Squadra 17.55lbs [based on the rep's quote of 16½ for the Team].There was nothing for it but to buy it and see!! No really, I was dying to get it - I just wanted to know for myself if it had much of a weight difference over my own '04 Tre k 2300. It did, by almost 1½lbs, with the Squadra [size large/56cm] weighing 17.6lbs [digital hanging scale & verified on balance weight scale].BTW, if you research the bike on the web, there's a video showing on bike and video sites [not Novara related], where a Novara guy says that the Team Squadra is 15¼lbs and that the Squadra is 16½lbs. The video is now viewable on many sites, but like Flavor Flav says, "don't believe the hype!" Lighter than a Cerv Soloist? Actually, no! And the only difference with those bikes in the video is what looks like a different stem on the Team, and Fulcrum 3 & 7 wheels [swapped to Ksyrium/Aksium for production, making the Team even lighter, by 3oz - what, 15lb even?! Nope... So the Team and Squadra are 1¼lbs & 1lb heavier respectively than claimed in the video.

>>1635011i agree but if you're looking for a used bike you shouldn't be too greedy and picky about finding a real bargain or you might be looking for months and still not find something that you're happy with. if you aren't a desperate poorfag you might as well accept that things cost money and get yourself a decent brand new bike. most used bike will seem like a terrible deal once you find out how much money you'll spend on repairs and accessories anyway and when you learn more about how technologically obsolete the bike is and what it might have gone through in terms of wear and tear. it almost needs to be a poverty commuter bike that you're going to lock up outside at school or a bike that you have some kind of boomer nostalgia boner for.

The real question is if they are or not. Your idea that used bikes don't actually make sense to buy also doesn't gel with your idea that they are fairly priced.
is there a cheap shimano with hydraulic brake on a drop bar lever for 9 speed?

Is 105 really the minimum if you’re buying new?
>>1635555hydro tiagra
>>1635555claris is the minimum, everything more is bling
>>1635375Ah that's the exact sort of thing I don't know about. Can you explain or link reading/video on why these components aren't fit for 1x chainring? I'll rotate the brake levers and learn other adjustments.I appreciate the caliper tip - lbs gave me that wrench once. Thanks again
>>1635555Just get a used bike a few years old with 105 and spend the difference between the cost of a new bike and the used bike on a really nice set of wheels
>>1635499Looks like walmart-tier junk for people who never plan on breaking the 10mph barrier, but it's a lot cheaper than a Cannondale so if you want it and it's in stock, whatever.
>>1635499low end new bikes are almost never worth it compared to quality used bikes. Unless you're just planning on hanging it on your wall and never riding it or something, in which case, yea it looks kinda pretty
>>1635448you have to face reality, there are desperate poorfags/cheapskates who won't spend $900+ on a bicycle, so the demand will be inflated. while you can laugh at 'i know what i got' boomers, your opinion is mostly irrelevant, because most of them will find a buyer eventually, and the rare good deals that come up will get flooded with dozens of messages within minutes. if you're desperate enough to look for a used bike you have to accept that you will likely pay a premium over the bike's "true" value, there's no free lunch. even real shit bikes are thought to be worth $50+, one man's trash is another man's treasure.
in my country there's a $5 listing fee for the craigslist equivalent, and 10% commission on the ebay equivalent. there's little reason to bother selling a $100 bike when you lose $5 instantly with no guarantee of selling it. so you'll ask $150 or $200. people are delusional enough to ask like $200 for a bike that cost like $250 new. when dealing with bikes in general you're saying your time is basically worthless because you have to interact with scummy people (both on the buy and sell side) and spend hours ordering parts and wrenching on the bike.
>>1635894>in my country
pls tell me that a bike like this couldnt possibly be worth 900 euros

Alright, need some opinions on the Priority Continuum Onyx as a city commuter bike. It retails for $1200, but I placed a hold on a returned bike that's $800. The salesman was pimping out its internal drivetrain with a belt rather than a chain, said it didn't need oil and wouldn't slip. Seems like marketing BS to me but the reviews for the bike are good, so I'm just wondering if anyone has thoughts on if it's just a gimmick
>>1636411>custom build>doesn't know what he wantsyikes
>>1636548it's cancerous normie baitheavy and low drivetrain efficiencyget a cannondale quick 3cannondale is a top brand, priority is a dime a dozen hipster ripoff brand
>>1636548also the fact that it was returned is a red flagthese small brands can't even get the manufacturing right, it's all too common for the frame to be warped (hard to spot with the naked eye) and it won't have the stiffness/weight ratio that it should haveand they cut a lot of corners, only 3 different frame sizes etc
>>1636571>>1636574Thanks for the response and good points. The extra 6 lbs of the drive train isn't ideal but I'm mainly using it for commuting and running errands. The continuous drivetrain is a loss of about 1 mph on flat ground (my city is completely flat).>it's cancerous normie baitIndeed, I am a normie upgrading from bikeshare.
>>1636668>my city is completely flata fixed gear bike would be incredibly based>fun>lightweight>low maintenance>good quality for the price>not very desirable for thieves>steel frame can take a beating>nice ride quality from the chromoly steel>severely underrated performance wise, faster than most bikes if the elevation changes aren't too badhttps://www.fujibikes.com/usa/bikes/pavement/urban/feather/featherhttps://wabicycles.com/collections/ssfixed
>>1636313>5000 miles out of a 350 usdpaying 350 for a bike that will ride like shit for a few thousand miles and be completely unridable by 5k miles is not a good deal. And it'll take work to make one last that long. You can buy a bike that'll last indefinitely for 350, just not new

Do girls need a specific kind of bike ? or it's just a matter of size / saddle ? My gf is looking for a gravel bike for touring with me. What should we be looking for her ?
>>1637177You see, girls' no-no squares are configured differently to men's so if you cram the same barely-padded lump of plastic up a girl's crotch that a boy uses it might not be so comfortable for her. Also girls' bikes are more likely to be pink.
>>1637220So basically I change the saddle, spay it pink and I got a «bike for women »?
>>1637177some brands have women's specific geometry but the poorfag bikes are the same for men and women. probably need a new saddle. maybe a narrower handlebar and smaller brake levers but that starts to get into autism territory.https://www.femmecyclist.com/womens-gravel-bikes/
Hate the cycling industry so much nowadays, full of fucking scrubs that want to get all of your money but without anything equivalent in return.Won't support and you shouldn't do it either.
>>1638383It wasn't different in the 2000s, wasn't different in the '90s, wasn't different in the '80s and '70s and before that.Don't worry zoomey, it's just the way it is, buy used, build up your toolset and parts bin and call it a day.
>>1638383what specifically are you complaining about? everything costs money, the cinemas sell fucking 10 dollar popcorn. the cycling industry isn't a monopoly for the most part, there's reasonable competition to provide value to customers. if they were pure cancer they wouldn't get enough customers to stay in business.
let's say there magically were a bike that only cost like $300 with no compromises in performance and no need for any maintenance etc. you would still be salty about paying $300 if you aren't enthusiastic about cycling and you just need a form of transportation and you can't afford a car and the bus/trains are impractical or too expensive for you.
