Over of week of < -20C weather, -30 this weekend so I'll have to use the treadmill this week. Nothing destroys my legs like the few times a year I go running.
>>1605351I'm pretty happy with my new lazy tourer. I just need fenders and an actual rear rack.
>>1606131puncture or new rubber ?
Nasty out today. -39C tonight with a -55 windchill. When it gets below -30C if you go outside and take a deep breath you start coughing immediately. Very clear skies though, stars look great.

What is the proper etiquette for passing pedestrians? I have no bell and I always yell out to couples, people with dogs, and children, because all three are naturally unpredictable. But I never alert individual pedestrians and I just go around them with space thinking they would naturally check behind if they wanted to merge left. However I am apparently scarring these kinds pedestrians and pissing them off. How should I adapt my strategy to prevent this?
>>1607870Proper etiquette is to assume that everyone is an idiot and ride accordingly. Oblivious idiots without sense to be mindful in traffic should be scared straight. Don't scar them though.
>>1607871>>1607872Hmm. Makes sense, like defensive driving. Got it.
>>1607871also applies to drivers and other cyclistswhenever encountering another person while riding your bike, ask yourself,>what is the absolute dumbest, most dangerous thing this person could do?then assume they are going to do it and act accordingly
>>1607870just get a bell fag
4th running day. Seems like 5 days of running is the magic number to get past stiff legs. Looking back at my ride log I managed to avoid running at all last year, as there was only one week long cold snap and I just sat on my ass. Started at 2.5 miles and adding half a mile a day until I hit 50-60 minute duration or the weather warms up.
>>1607870slow to <10km/h to pass peds
Lovely afternoon today. Got out to run an errand and ended up just randomly cruising around town for an hour or so on my stupidly heavy commuting bike without wearing any special kit - riding hard on fast roads, taking it easy through parks and shortcuts. Just felt good.
>>1608011>ended up just randomly cruising around town for an hour or sothats the one lol
>>1608005I always do and they still get pissed.
>>1607870Scream OHMY GOD WHATCH OUTTTTTT everytime
>>1608105you can't win then. they just hate you. maybe make your bike extremely silly and charming. like ziptie a long pole to a rack vertical and hang a lantern on it or something

>just had the realisation literally no one is stopping me going for a comfy midnight ride
>>1608615Bro lights out on a quiet roa/rail trail is so nice. You get a mysterious feeling of floating
I was speeding along the shore at full clip and thought i would try and launch off this sand berm. The sand was too soft. I did not fly so good.
>>1610678Nice picture, thank you for not being obnoxious. If you keep it up, people may stop bullying you.
>>1611078you crashin?
Loam had a bit of snow at the top
Nice day for a 30 km river ride. All the groups ended up converging near the turn around point, then spread out again on the way back.
>>1612559I wonder what that would be like riding on an normal mountainbike.
>>1612640A bit too soft for a mtb to be any fun, but mid afternoon as the surface snow got sticky and started packing instead of getting displaced it might have been ok. In a few spots where we had 30 bikes pass in the same track it was still loose with the snow not binding to itself at all.Ice can often be ridden on even hybrids / cross bikes it all comes down the snow cover. One day you can have 6 inches of snow, the next day the wind can strip it down to bare ice. Due to freeze thaw cycles the ice surface usually textured and not too slippery when all the snow is gone, except under bridges.
I love winter and snow but this is getting too much, there's more on the way tomorrow too
Funnily enough my entire suburbs power was out all day. I have become Texas lel. Battery was charged tho so literally had a perfect afternoon.
>>1612739>power was out all day>laughs in human powered bike
>>1612722Your pics always depict the shitty side of winter.
>>1612739wow what a view.. nice bike, looks very comfy.

>>1612888trips and I can't help it, it's the shit I have to deal with on the daily.
It is now the time of year where I need to wear sunscreen with my balaclava when riding during the day when its not overcast. Stupid balaclava tan lines.

It only got up to 4C today but the snow did a ton of melting thanks to a clear sky. I went for an evening ride and it was wet roads everywhere with huge puddles due to ice plugged drains. I was hoping the fat bike trails would be firm after the sun went down, but they were still too soft to ride. Even the alleys which usually stay dry longer were all turning to slush. One nice thing is there was a lot of clumpy slush around as I was heading home. That stuff is fun to ride on after it freezes. Lots of grip and make a deafening crunching noise.
back from a short 4 day trip~370km distance, ~3400mt elevationhot ass dayscold ass nightsgood stuff
>>1613705here's my setup, trip was short enough so I didn't use the panniers. clothes + sleeping bag in the handlebar bag, tent + mat + tools and others on top of the rack.
>>1613709also dams are nice
Enjoyed a crusty morning ride, and got home before the streets started getting wet. A flock of ducks sticks around all winter despite the occasional -30C days. The lake at the main park has aerators that keep a few patches of water open all winter to help cut down on the dead fish in the spring.
>>1612739What is the point of a bicycle like this that pedals for you? Why buy a bicycle at all? Why do you need full suspension for riding on a boardwalk with slicks and carbon wheels? Sorry anon, I am not a hater, but this is a retarded contraption. This is what people like Osama Bin laden are talking about when they mention the sickness plaguing the West.
>>1613856> not wanting the fun of a downhill bike with the flat speed of a time trial bike Thats some real shitty bait you are implying there. I also remember him bitching about living at the top of some godforsaken +25% grade. No body likes that shit.
>>1614008that's something to conquer. he decided to bitch out with an "eeb" instead.
Windy tomorrow so tonight I went for a second ride. A little further than I was planning, racking up 67 km of fat biking for the day.
>>1614008I live at the top of a 19% grade. It's not that bad
This is about a third the way up my hill. I live at the very very top. you cannot see it, that traffic island is simply a chicane at 2/3 of the climb.>>1614016nothing stopped me from conquering it many times on the roadbike.>>1614046Its something you really dont want to deal with after a long day at work or comming back from the shops with 15kg of groceries. The eeb is simply heaven sent.

The side streets are getting progressively icier. Its still a kind of lumpy ice which my fat studs can grab onto, but a few more days and it could smooth out enough to significantly reduce grip. The lumpy ice is actually pretty fun to ride, though I take it easy in the turns. The rail line I frequently ride is melting down in one spot exposing the ties, so that section is getting bumpy. Most bodies of water are unsafe now due to storm drain discharge from road melt and a few major watermain breaks.

>>1614662where?
>>1614681lol yeah, the bridge is kind of symbolic too, even if it's already deep in the north side that's where a visible cultural shift from the south side and north side is seen. South of the bridge is generally ghetto while north is commercialized as fuck.

ITs been warmer that 35 first time this year, got some short rides in on lunch break. Feels ridiculous
>>1614983Sorry to buddy but now you have the chance to take the singlespeedpill
i just rediscovered the joy of cycling after a few years away from it, been mad into cycling since i was a kid, spent most of my free time as a kid out on my bike, but you know how life changes prioritizes and these things tend to fall by the wayside. ANyway after finding out my wife of 23 years was banging her boss of 25 years I decided to say fuck it all and bought myself a nice bike. i have to say I am thoroughly enjoying life, I don't even miss the car, not that I had any say in it, they have the car and the house and they are fucking welcome to it all, just give me somewhere to lock my bike and a quiet bedsit in a house filled with Romanian labourers and I'm happy.
>>1614660>people freak out but they dont get mad>hornlol where is this? people even get mad and give me an earful when I use my fucking bell in bongistan (these are people walking in the actual road, might I add, I never ride on MUPs). I've even had one particularly assblasted karen try and stop me passing while shrieking about her dog (which was off the lead and not under control) until a cage came up behind me and honked. Thanks for reading my blog post
>>1614988I retrieved the cage plate, both bolts, and one of the jockey wheels, so I can rebuild it once I dig up a broken one off a bin and cannibalize the jockey wheels.>>1615187I actually had that bike setup as a singlespeed but got bored of it lol. Should've checked and treadlocked those bolts though hahaha
