>>1604869I'm a northerner, I don't think I've ever seen one of these. Just looks like a MK1 with a fancy paint job to me.
>>1605043God, privatisation absolutely butchered all soul on Britain's Railways. That class 700 is void of anything remotely likable, just like most modern rolling stock
>"slamming sounds intensify"
>>1604869Did they ever clean the rolling stock in the south? It always looked filthy.
>>1605332t.doesn't do anything to help but complains
>>1605332Clearly you don't remember (or know) how shit BR's service was.
>>1604869You'll be lucky to even see a woman that hasn't hit the wall at age 12 in the UK.
>>1605444>but BR was SOOOOO BAD DONT YOU REMEMBER???? THE SANDWICHES WERE DRY!I see/hear this argument so often. The fact is they actually did phenomenally well considering the Tory Scum were systematically grinding them down to try and prove a point that private corporations are more efficient (they aren't) so they could give first refusal to their cronies money laundering fronts when it inevitably collapsed (the only reason for this being it was also forced to operate like a company, FOR PROFIT, despite being a publicly owned service). just like they're doing with the NHS now. Aint nothin changed.>>1605332At least there's a reasonable amount of BR stock left. Some still in rail blue, even.
>>1605444Yeah, and when passenger services are renationalised and somebody complains 30 years down the line somebody'll say "Don't you remember how overcrowded the trains were? and how ridiculously expensive tickets were?"
>>1605440There was always window etching and black marker pen graffiti inside but they were generally comfy. A serial poo spreader eventually got caught after several years for causing many trains to go out of service.

>>1605332>God, privatisation absolutely butchered all soul on Britain's Railways. That class 700 is void of anything remotely likable, just like most modern rolling stockThe class 700's specification was made by the Department for Transport. Same with pretty much every new train with ironing boards. It's the government cheaping out, not the TOCs
>>1605548>Don't you remember how overcrowded the trains were? and how ridiculously expensive tickets were?lmao both of these are due to the gov under-investing in capacity improvements. Fares are set by gov to control demand inflicted by their lack of supply. The cheap Advance fares are the ones that have fuck all to do with the gov
This is what they took from us
>>1605548>"Don't you remember how overcrowded the trains were? and how ridiculously expensive tickets were?"If the service is expensive and overcrowded, it means the public aproves the service. There are more people paying more to ride the trains. All it shows is how out of touch you socialist faggots are.>I WANT MY OLD RUSTY SLOW TRAIN BACK WITH NOBODY ONBOARD AND SUBSIZIDED FARES JUST FOR ME!!111!Trains are not your toys kiddo, grow up and get a job.
>>1606577>All it shows is how out of touch you socialist faggots are.I'm not a socialist but neither are Britain's passenger railways free enterprises. pre-nationalisation our railways were shareholder funded. Post-privatisation they are STILL taxpayer-funded. pre-nationalisation the entirety of the railway infrastructure was the sole ownership of the railway company. Post-privatisation we have govt-controlled tracks, bank-owned rolling stock and TOCs owned by the german and dutch govts., who each in turn take a slice of the pie whilst hiking ticket prices and they still get a ton of money out of the govt coffers. You can call me a "socialist faggot" but we still have nationalised railways in a sense, only it's not our government, or as a consequence, us, who are the beneficiaries but the German, Dutch, French, whoever governments. So you're also a socialist faggot if you support this system, just a socialist faggot who likes taking it up the arse from JFs. Not only that but you're a complete muggins if you think privatisation is the sole reason for increased ridership over the past 30 years (though the TOCs would love you to think that) and that it isn't pretty much entirely dependent on the increase in population and the massive increase in the cost of living in city centres that has forced people out of the cities and into commuter towns, and the inability to drive a car into a city centre thanks to a massive increase in motor traffic and all the congestion, delays, fees etc associated with that. (remember the first lockdown is how busy our roads were during the early 90's i.e privatisation)If you really hate nationalised railways so much then pretty much the only system you can support is the American system because what we have is a complete clusterfuck of inefficiencies that favours nobody but foreign governments and banks. Which is why the Conservatives did it in the first place.
>>1606507>t. gl*balist
>>1606577>it means the public aproves the service. There are more people paying more to ride the trains.yeah no this really ain't it.do you, by any chance, also think trickle-down economics works?
>>1606577>>I WANT MY OLD RUSTY SLOW TRAIN BACK WITH NOBODY ONBOARD AND SUBSIZIDED FARES JUST FOR ME!!111!Yes.
>>1606593Britbong here. This guy gets it. It's a fucking mess.

>>1606646good
>>1606593>If you really hate nationalised railways so much then pretty much the only system you can support is the American systemor the japanese system, which is the same, except in a country where passenger trains work (just like the UK)
>>1606693And yet the Shinkansen is as a product of nationalised Japanese Railways
>>1606547This is what they gave us.
>>1606593Nice. At least the new railway management contracts should readdress the balance somewhat...hopefully.
>>1606922Ah yes, the extreme devastation of hitting a large animal and derailing, like most trains do after something gets lodged under the bogie/wheelset.
>>1606720>THE shinkansen>assuming its a single line with a single type of trainSome of the lines were built in the JNR era and some of them built later (and some in construction right now, including the Chuo Shinkansen, which is a level above all other HSRs in the world)...Speeds have been increased, new routes have been created, frequency increased and all of the JNR fleet has been replaced, some even twice (and new trains are still coming, for further speed increase). All of this while paying the JNR debt, making profits and paying taxes.
>>1607115>THE shinkansenYes, THE shinkansen, as in THE Japanese High Speed Rail Network you absolute muppet. Also, my original point is completely valid and true. >Shinkansen is as a product of nationalised Japanese RailwaysTHE shinkansen was first designed, funded and constructed by the state-owned Japanese National Railways.Sure, there have been additions and improvements made to THE shinkansen since 1987, but the original concept comes from a state-owned enterprise. Much like other groundbreaking HSR lines, like the TGV or the ICE.Neither of us are in disagreement here about THE Shinkansen, only over your misunderstanding of language.
>>1606646>le epic wasted energy and slow trains that can't work in flooding moment.

>>1609349
>>1604869
>>1605332No, nationalisation butchered all the soul (and the grouping act definitely didn't help things earlier) We don't even have proper privitisation, you just have people leasing the operation rights for the track, locomotives and rolling stock from government owned companies.
>>1606593Why don't we go back to the system before hand where it seemed to be working fine with the Big Four?
>>1613356>No, nationalisation butchered all the soulTo be honest the more I think about it the more it seems privatisation butchered the soul of Britain's Railways, not inherently because of private ownership, but because it meant the erasing of British engineered and manufactured rolling stock. I mean, Mallard or the flying scotsman are hugely popular locomotives that are favourites of many and they came out of private enterprise. Many others favour HSTs, Deltics, 37s etc which came from a public enterprise. What they've all got in common is that they're British designed and built. For me, that's where the soul comes from, built by British hands and British minds and adored by British hearts. Distinct in character and personality that best suits those native to these shores. Not this Stadler or Siemens or whatever crap we get nowadays. They don't feel like living, breathing machines, they just feel like yet more imported products and that's about it.
>>1613416good post, sums up my thoughts exactly as wellhope you brits don't mind me butting in but this is the sort of shit we're starting to get in australia too. soulless chinese designed-and-manufactured shit compared to ye olde red rattlers and other classic electrics
>>1613671ye olde red rattlers in questionnot racist but things were better when the chinese weren't involved simple as
>>1613416I doubt that if British Rail had been kept around it would keep buying up British stock. That sort of protection and level of government preference didn't do much to save British Leyland. Meanwhile, had they not been nationalised and we still had loads of private lines that needed their own locomotives for specific purposes and different areas and regions, that would probably have kept loco manufacturers, as well as their own in house production.
>>1613675>Meanwhile, had they not been nationalised and we still had loads of private lines that needed their own locomotives for specific purposes and different areas and regions, that would probably have kept loco manufacturers, as well as their own in house production.Exactly what the Swiss did. Now even the brits are having to cope and buy Stadler trains
>>1613675>I doubt that if British Rail had been kept around it would keep buying up British stockWell, that's mere conjecture. I suspect they would have and if they had, we would probably have more railfans today than we do. You and I would probably also get more enthused about new rolling stock than we do, even despite our different perspectives.>Meanwhile, had they not been nationalisedThis is also pure conjecture. You might be right, you might be wrong, we will never know. But the fact remains that the privatisation of BR killed domestically designed and manufactured rolling stock.
>>1613706The fact that BR was looking overseas already and the fact that many of the purchases came about due to political decisions resulting as part of the transformation of the EC into the EU, your premise is flawed. It's conjecture to say that BR's end was what killed British locomotive manufacturing. If we go down that road, then BR basically fatally wounded the industry by having it become utterly reliant on a single customer and destroying chances of flexible export success. If you look at every country that still produces locomotives, they still retained a strong private industrial sector and had a mixed system even at the height of their rail nationalisation.
>>1613706>I suspect they would have and if they had, we would probably have more railfans today than we do.oh, yeah, thats what a railway needs, railfans, not passengers or moneylel
