So is being an aircraft technician, you don’t just seat on your ass at base working on aircraft from 9 to 5. Your work nights and weird schedule, your weekend is middle of the week most of the time, you follow your aircraft and work on it if anything brakes at any time of the day.

Depends on the gig. Pilots and A&Ps both have to go where the work is. Time off, scheduling, etc all depend on the company, your seniority, and a bunch of other shit.

Concerned about FSU1018 on FlightRadar24 right now. It squawked 7700 about ten minutes ago, left a holding pattern, and their altitude has been slowly decreasing off the east coast of the UAE. Their heading data has been stuck on 339 degrees but the flight seems to have taken a right hand turn and dropped to 5200ft. Their heading data was wonky throughout after leaving the holding pattern.

What is your thoughts on getting LASIK? I'm finishing my instrument rating soon and I'm thinking about getting it before starting my commercial training. My eyesight is pretty bad but correctable to 20/20 and if the surgery fucks up my eyes I'm not in too deep.

I'm guessing it diverted to Nantes (original destination Angers) and was on the right track to intercept runway 03, but it's disappeared over Paulx, where flights would make a turn.
Ground coverage doesn't seem spotty. A Volotea flight from Montpellier flew into Nantes onto 03 without disappearing.

Until quite recently it wasn't really possible for gliders to have AIs, since mechanical ones need a vacuum system that you don't have without an engine. Nowadays you could have electronic gyros or combo instruments like the Garmin G5 but they're expensive and gliders are all about keeping cost down.

Personally if I were doing the sailplane thing, especially it it were in an area where unintentional IMC were a possibility, I'd use Foreflight with an external AHRS and at least have a fallback AI that way.

I know a guy who flew helos and some fixed wing for Customs for like 20 years. He loved it but said it became a shitshow during the transition when they got rolled into DHS and merged with the Border Patrol. Not sure what they're like now, I've considered it myself though just on the off chance that I might be able to fly a P-3 with them someday.

Also you don't necessarily have to be on the border, they fly a lot of places, including security flights around DC and tons of stuff over the Gulf out of bases on the Gulf Coast.
