There's Always That EditionWelcome to the /gag/ - /gag/ is dedicated to all the pilots and pilot applicants out there, and although the name suggests otherwise, airline, military, and charter discussion is welcome.Keep it on topic, keep the shit throwing to a minimum, no nudes. Fuck this industry. And fuck all the 250 hour commercial pilots that ruin this industry by being willing to fly for literally minimum wage. kys

There will never be another golden age of surplus aviation. None of the great powers will off load thousands of airplanes and helicopters onto the markets anymore. Making general aviation so cheap that Popular Mechanics writes articles about turning helicopters into rv campers. No more passenger and cargo services benefitting from cheap cargo planes. No weekend hobby pilots flying unarmed fighters and attack planes.

If they’re just looking for 15 ME then that is much easier.
>>1565734You’re not logging PIC during CMEL, you moron.
Hello, I'm in my mid 20s and have zero experience in flying/aviation and want to be an airline pilot (typical I know)I thought about doing a discovery flight then go for a PPL before going to a flight school (CPL, ATPL, etc), is this a good idea ? What path did you guys take ?

Advice neededI’m still a few hundred hours short of RATP mins. I applied for outside pilot jobs because of the economy, and I’m almost midway through the hiring process to be a Federal Air Marshal. That is a good career. They travel nonstop and make great money. But I want to be an airline pilot. I don’t know what to do. Continue to RATP mins and sit and wait until the economy recovers. Or throw the past few years away and start a new career?
>>1567757you should be happy it didn't fail on you

Just got a mass email from the 190th FS recruiting dude. Looks like there's a total of 85 applicants. 85 people competing for what is probably only 1 or 2 slots. That's a lot of competition... wew

When are the airlines going to begin hiring in the USA?
>>1569184after the election when covid gets memory-holed

>>1569184No one has any clue to be honest. But assuming Trump gets elected and a vaccine comes out I would guess 2-3 years. They will likely require 121/135 time and jet time for a few years. How do I into flying as a 25 year old in the Navy? I want to start applying for STA-21, but I only really want to fly seaplanes. I know with trucking some companies pay for your certs if you sign on with a company for a set amount of years, but I haven't been able to find anything like this online for aviation. I live near a seaplane school, but would it be worth it to start paying what will end up being a 15,000 dollar investment for a PPL when I'm already trying to go through the Navy? I'm also at the point where I have four years to get it through the Navy since I'm already 25. I just don't know where to start I guess. I just really want to fly seaplanes.
>>1570052if i were you i would focus all my time and resources into getting a navy pilot slotyou can always get a ppl down the line, 15k will be nothing if you set yourself up well financially

>>1570052>when I'm already trying to go through the Navy? I'm also at the point where I have four years to get it through the Navy since I'm already 25You need to do some research on Naval aviation or even military aviation. Military aviation is Basic, then OTS, then UPT where you first learn cessnas and other single engines then move to jets such as T-38 talon trainer then your actual air frame. Most military aviation schools rate everyone. If there are only 2 jet spots then only the first 2 get it even if all top 5 are asking for jets. You dont get to choose your airframe. Next navy is 10 years active duty not 4. (2 training, 8 full active) Airforce is 12, Army is 10 (i think). Check this site and start doing research. https://www.navycs.com/officer/aviationofficer.htmlAnd they dont really have seaplanes.
I'm looking for somewhere to move in the US with a reasonably low cost of living and good flight training and hopefully entry-level flying jobs. (CFI or whatever.) It'd be nice if it had good gun laws, relatively cool weather, and at least one Costco in town. Any suggestions?

>>1573353>>1573354>>1573368I just don't know if I can handle the humidity, plus aren't the cheap parts of Florida pretty shitholey? I'll give FL some consideration but any other suggestions? I was thinking maybe somewhere in the midwest?
why is flying so comfy bros
>>1573641Looks like a cool operation but I'm not even done with my private, much less my CPL. I was in a two-year college program and started flight training in March only to have it shut down in April. I've got the money to go all the way to CPL (maybe even to buy my own plane and do it that way) and to live somewhere inexpensive until I'm done with it but I need to figure out where to go to do it.
>>1573642for instructing the best place to be used to be miami, you will deal with a lot of chinks arabs and spics though.1 room will run you like 800 for 1 month here, and yes inbetween every nice area there are shithole ghettos
>>1573672I guess 800 is tolerable, cheaper would be nice though. Something I guess I'll add is that I'd like to skip instructing altogether if possible, I know it's a relative longshot but if I could do aerial survey, banner tow, or whatever and then move to charters or 135 cargo or something I'd be a lot happier than as a CFI.
>>1564599Pretty sure anybody can put anything into their bio, and if you’re an AE you’ll get away with the pilot thing as well
>>1573674lol I knew it was coming. Instructing is a tough job to come by right now and everything else you just named us a degree harder to come by as well. There is some vfr 135 cargo in Florida but if you’re timebuilding you likely don’t have the mins for it. Go where the work is. Arizona, SoCal, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas are all the places with decent year round weather and busy (pre covid) flight schools.
>>1573707SoCal is where I am now, but I can't afford to stay here. AZ's been high on my list of possibilities, at least it's dry there and gets cold at night. I was hoping maybe SLC or Denver or somewhere in the middle of the country might be a decent option but I guess not huh?
Fuck I hate this shit. I get paid so fucking little and work 6 days a week 12+ hours every week. When you do the math I get paid less then minimum wage in my state. My boss hates me and has made it clear I'm not going anywhere as long as I'm with the company- cant even be fucked to respond to my emails. I'm so fucking burnt out on this shit. I'm not even that mad anymore it's just fucking sad. This industry is a piece of shit. You'll get fucked & underpaid in the 91 world unless you know someone, you'll get fucked & underpaid in the 135 world unless you know someone, and you'll get fucked in the 121 world by recessions and seniority lists. Nepotism runs strong in this industry and I fucking hate it.

>>1574184Yeah, 130-ish is the going rate for older 172s in my area. I can also get a steam gauge early '00s DA40 for that, or a G1000 model for like 150.
>>1574225Not sure. From my understanding the age-related form is usually associated with mild-moderate central vision degradation, but the early onset form varies significantly in onset speed and severity. Sadly I also know that there’s no cure and it’s irreversible. I am going to schedule a follow up with an ophthalmologist who specializes in macular degeneration and get a more informed opinion.

>>1574492just so you know, that doesn't actually mean much. its just propaganda to get people to join, man. At the end of the day, you're going to be the same as air force aircrew, but since their funding is better. They will have better training and a better quality of life.

I hope I'll be able to do something like this after my enlistment. Maybe I'll try an engineering degree but I'm math dumb.
>>1574500you do what you want. But i'm just giving you good advice. being a Marine doesn't make up for having shitty QOL when you're not doing anything different. You'll be no different from someone in the air force or navy. .t former Marine who did IT. I literally sat at a help desk for 4 years and still put up with shitty QOL. Which I wouldn't have dealt with if I had went air force or navy
>>1574228if you are serious about it start contacting the units and getting your papers in order, you can be on a waiting list for a very long time and then asked to go in when a slot opens
>>1574427these types of websites dont account for the fact that we do not work 40 hour weeks as is usual.>>1574428sounds cool bro, whats your point? most pilots i know are a&p as well, and chose airlines for the QOL.>>1574492go study asvab and join the AF. the muhreen meme is so sad, don't be a tard. only reason to actually go muhreens is if you are one of the few chads who WANTS to eat shit in the sandbox.

Whats the best place nowadays to share pictures of airplanes? I work at an FBO and take hundreds of pictures of all the cool planes that come in and I'd to share them someplace.I looked into Instagram, but it looks like instagram resizes all images to really small dimensions which bothers me. >>1575485>Is it an issue to take the time off?By law it can’t be an issue as far as the employer goes. It may be inconvenient for your personal schedule. But your employer would be required by law to give you the time to go to drill
