Welcome to the /gag/ - /gag/ is dedicated to all the pilots and pilot applicants out there, and although the name suggests otherwise, airline, military, and charter discussion is welcome.

I’m really stressed out about what the regional hiring market is going to look once they finally decide to resume hiring.

Republic Airways already had tight requirements (50ME) no more than 1 checkride failure.

Large companies that employ thousands that want an objective way to ensure a minimum level of intelligence in their employees can only do that by requiring degrees. Yeah you can be a retard and get a degree. But you'll at least be a functioning adult that can work to accomplish a goal and to stick to something for 4 years

Making general aviation so cheap that Popular Mechanics writes articles about turning helicopters into rv campers. No more passenger and cargo services benefitting from cheap cargo planes. No weekend hobby pilots flying unarmed fighters and attack planes.

Advice needed

I’m still a few hundred hours short of RATP mins. I applied for outside pilot jobs because of the economy, and I’m almost midway through the hiring process to be a Federal Air Marshal. That is a good career. They travel nonstop and make great money. But I want to be an airline pilot. I don’t know what to do.

Continue to RATP mins and sit and wait until the economy recovers. Or throw the past few years away and start a new career?
>>

Just got a mass email from the 190th FS recruiting dude. Looks like there's a total of 85 applicants. 85 people competing for what is probably only 1 or 2 slots.

That's a lot of competition... wew

>>1568337

The rumor was that they couldn't recover from a due to the cuffed wing w/o a chute.

They had to demonstrate spin recovery in order to get certified in Europe, so that was just a FAA vs EASA thing./

When are the airlines going to begin hiring in the USA?

Why do the retards who say that seem to think Covid is a “USA only issue”? You do realize it’s a worldwide problem, right? How is it just magically going to go away when you have Europe and other countries having massive spikes (along with USA)
>>
>>1569184
No one has any clue to be honest. But assuming Trump gets elected and a vaccine comes out I would guess 2-3 years. They will likely require 121/135 time and jet time for a few years. No more 1500 hour CFIs hearing back from airlines for a while.

The industry plays musical chairs every 5-10 years. And when the music stops and you don't like where you are or you're in-between gigs then you're SOL

How do I into flying as a 25 year old in the Navy? I want to start applying for STA-21, but I only really want to fly seaplanes. I know with trucking some companies pay for your certs if you sign on with a company for a set amount of years, but I haven't been able to find anything like this online for aviation. I live near a seaplane school, but would it be worth it to start paying what will end up being a 15,000 dollar investment for a PPL when I'm already trying to go through the Navy? How viable would a civil version of the V-280 be if it loses the future heavy lift competition? I can see it being a god-tier medivac and coast guard patrol workhorse. It could potentially compete with the AW609, which ironically was a Bell partnership with Augusta.

Dont rush to start. This year is a wash for everyone. Even if you wanted a career you are going to be competing with unemployed/furloughed airline pilots. Just save up some money and start next year. The good part is you can pay as you go but to get proficient you will want to have lots of lessons near each other. Lot gaps and you forget it all anyway.

>when I'm already trying to go through the Navy? I'm also at the point where I have four years to get it through the Navy since I'm already 25
You need to do some research on Naval aviation or even military aviation. Military aviation is Basic, then OTS, then UPT where you first learn cessnas and other single engines then move to jets such as T-38 talon trainer then your actual air frame. Most military aviation schools rate everyone. If there are only 2 jet spots then only the first 2 get it even if all top 5 are asking for jets. You dont get to choose your airframe. Next navy is 10 years active duty not 4. (2 training, 8 full active) Airforce is 12, Army is 10 (i think).

Check this site and start doing research. https://www.navycs.com/officer/aviationofficer.html

And they dont really have seaplanes.
>>
I'm looking for somewhere to move in the US with a reasonably low cost of living and good flight training and hopefully entry-level flying jobs. (CFI or whatever.) It'd be nice if it had good gun laws, relatively cool weather, and at least one Costco in town. Any suggestions?

>>
>>1573641
Looks like a cool operation but I'm not even done with my private, much less my CPL. I was in a two-year college program and started flight training in March only to have it shut down in April. I've got the money to go all the way to CPL (maybe even to buy my own plane and do it that way) and to live somewhere inexpensive until I'm done with it but I need to figure out where to go to do it.
>>
>>1573642
for instructing the best place to be used to be miami, you will deal with a lot of chinks arabs and spics though.
1 room will run you like 800 for 1 month here, and yes inbetween every nice area there are shithole ghettos
>>
>>1573672
I guess 800 is tolerable, cheaper would be nice though. Something I guess I'll add is that I'd like to skip instructing altogether if possible, I know it's a relative longshot but if I could do aerial survey, banner tow, or whatever and then move to charters or 135 cargo or something I'd be a lot happier than as a CFI.
>>
>>1564599
Pretty sure anybody can put anything into their bio, and if you’re an AE you’ll get away with the pilot thing as well
>>
>>1573674
lol I knew it was coming. Instructing is a tough job to come by right now and everything else you just named us a degree harder to come by as well. There is some vfr 135 cargo in Florida but if you’re timebuilding you likely don’t have the mins for it. Go where the work is. Arizona, SoCal, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas are all the places with decent year round weather and busy (pre covid) flight schools.
>>
>>1573707
SoCal is where I am now, but I can't afford to stay here. AZ's been high on my list of possibilities, at least it's dry there and gets cold at night. I was hoping maybe SLC or Denver or somewhere in the middle of the country might be a decent option but I guess not huh?

Not sure. From my understanding the age-related form is usually associated with mild-moderate central vision degradation, but the early onset form varies significantly in onset speed and severity. Sadly I also know that there’s no cure and it’s irreversible. I am going to schedule a follow up with an ophthalmologist who specializes in macular degeneration and get a more informed opinion.

Anyone in here fly at an airline and also in the reserves? I plan on enlisting in AF reserves for 6 years, will probably make airlines in 4.
Is it an issue to take the time off? Does it enhance your resume? looking for any advice or opinions.

By law it can’t be an issue as far as the employer goes. It may be inconvenient for your personal schedule. But your employer would be required by law to give you the time to go to drill

I've heard some stories of employers disliking it and firing you for other reasons when in reality its the scheduling. Will an airline turn me down at an interview for this?

Some faggot I know got hired at some company recently after working in IT for a decade after service in the reserves

awesome! Maybe they'll be able to get through the first day of indoc before they get sent home again for the second wave

I dont think employers will fuck around with disciplining you if you have military orders since thats highly illegal plus most airlines have unions anyway

>tracking a 7700 squawk just now
>plane was American Eagle 3087
>took off from Fort Wayne but had to turn back for an unknown reason
>plane is over the University of Saint Francis when it stops updating
>disappears from FR24
>ohfuckohfuckohfuck
>Fort Wayne airport is 800ft above sea level, the plane was 2000ft above ground
>wonder if it fucking crashed
>typing the fifth line of this post
>the fucking thing reappears northeast of Fort Wayne and is now turning on final
ffs I nearly had a heart attack, I guess Fort Wayne has shitty low altitude coverage

You can’t entirely trust flightradar24 or flightaware. Once I sent a student on his XC solo, I watched him on FlightWare and had a panic because it showed him busting Bravo airspace and the SFRA. I was just waiting for a phone call the whole time. But after he returned when I confronted him. He pulled out ForeFlight and his track there was completely different. Didn’t bust anything

learn to fly in AK, dont go to one of those corporate schools where half your time is sitting in a backseat or they wont let you check the oil.

Literally lie to the FAA and don’t report it, and when you get denied your medical, be like, woah i didn’t know i had this, damn that sucks. Meanwhile work on a backup plan. ATC has to hold a 2nd class FYI.
