Real gravel bikes are just road bikes with big tires and maybe disc brakes (real nice to not eat rim brake tracks with gravel dust and grit) and they're made for gravel racing. 32-40 ish mm 650Bs will fit on a 26er without altering the geometry, the diameters are similar but you may need to check brake adjustment, should be pretty easy with v-brakes but I wouldn't know about cantis (for road pull comatibility)

on smooth surfaces there is not much practical difference between 1.5 and 2.1 inch tires
where 2 inch tires really starts to pay off is in course gravel bigger than Size #57 gravel and in the wet
and there is a little bit of flotation on sand but not really enough for deep sand like a fat bike

26 is kind of bad for a smooth ride as the chain stays and spokes are shorter
and many of the later 1990s MTB were overbuilt in their tube dimensions

that said 26 24 and 20 inch wheels are much better for bearing weight and lateral load
for any given hub width the wider angle of the spokes provides more strength
very important for tandems and cargo bikes

and lastly if your climbing hills the smaller wheels can help with lower gear ratios
27 and 28 inch wheels are a bit more suited to higher speed and smoother riding so each has their place

That's not how a compromise works. You inherit some of the benefits and some of the drawbacks of either side. Gravel bikes aren't as effortless to ride on the road as road bikes, they're not as capable on tracks as mountain bikes, but they do both well enough to serve as single bike allrounders.

I am french and I agree, the 1960-1980 era was the apex of the randonneuse meme : road geometry, some clearance up to 700x32c, fenders, decent weight around 11kg. Randonneuse is peak bike for comfy ride or commuting (cheap second hand, low maintenance, upgradable with better components. The only downside was the small amount or gears on the lower end models with simplex or sachs-huret derailleurs. Nowadays this market is dominated by decathlon tribans (good too if you avoid the microshit ones).

I spent a fucking decade city commuting on 28mm while DREAMING of a bike that could fit 40mm with similar geometry. CX craze helped a bit, but I wished for "all road" style bikes forever and I would never write them off as just a gimmick. They are perfect for urban commuters who go relatively fast

Honestly I just got a gravel bike 2 weeks ago and I dont regret a single thing. For people like me in a country like Ireland where none of the roads I cycle on are paved a hybrid is amazing to use. Most of my cycles are on and off proper roads and I would recommend a gravel bike to anybody else in a backwards rural area like me.
