Forty years ago today, on March 31, 1980, the Rock Island railroad ceased to exist. Press F to pay respects.
>>1465589The baby blue with the wrench R was the best livery.
>>1465589May this thread last for fourty years! She was a mighty good road, indeed.
Fmy favorite railroad, though I wasn't born in time to ever see it.
https://youtu.be/0NTa7ps6sNUFirst recording of “Rock Island Line” a song that originated with a gospel quartet that worked in the line’s Little Rock shops. Somehow it went viral in the Arkansas penal system where John Lomax recorded in in 1934.
big fuckin F
This is getting torn down soon.
Bankruptcy Blue hopper taking a rest and enjoying the view
>>1467357Most towns would try to preserve a historic building like that.
>>1468004It's probably filled with mold and asbestos.
>>1468005It's a small building, you just gut the inside and lease it out to an overpriced burger joint or something.
>>1468006Do you understand that remediating those issues is incredibly expensive?
>>1468007I understand that it's more than that town can afford. I'm not brushing aside your point, just saying it's not something huge and insurmountable, the will just isn't there.
>>1468008>Paying $250k-$500k to remediate mold and asbestos in dumpy worn down station. If anything, you'd paint the windows, redo the roof, and lock the fucker up and leave it unused. That's the cheapest thing.
>>1467961Did you get these from TO or the facebook groups?
>>1468008Those old train stations and depots are notoriously hard to find tenants for even after they're remodeled. The city or organization which owns it has the prospect of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix it up that it may never see a return on.
>>1468022TO, but I'm just a lurker there. I don't know of any facebook groups, if you have any good pics from those feel free to share.
The absolute state
The maroon and yellow is a horrendous livery
>>1468008It's owned by the successor railroad.Saw the invoice and it's going to be demolished for $400k.
>>1468863>it's going to be demolished for $400k.Might as well keep it up for that price.
>>1468045When I get off work I'll have some to share.
>>1469005K.. KEEP ME POSTED
>>1469037Some old skool sheeit
>>1469100>>1469102>>1469103>>1469105Nice pics, friend.
Just got this boi in N scale
>>1469976Nice I sold my N scale 4300 and 4304 just last month. I'm concentrating on the 1973-1975 time frame now.
>>1469976A lot of those engines are still in service. The GTW bought a good chunk of CRIP geeps.
>>1470039Neat, what's your current roster? Are you modeling any specific region? >>1470067Makes sense, those GP38-2s were bought new and only 4 years old when the Rock went under. MoPac got a bunch of them too.
>>1470093I've got 3 Kato SD40-2s(4790, 4791, 4796), Atlas GP35s(305, 323) Atlas GP40s(4713, 363) Atlas U23B(208 w/ the froglights added) U25B (237), Kato E8(665) and Kato U30C(4598). I've got some Kato F units on the work bench that I'm either going to do some plastic grafting on the sides to make them look like an F9 or just get some free CAD software and make them in brass from that one company in Scotland. Also some GP7/9s that I need to work on. Currently working on some MKT and UP shit before I get back into Rock modelling, though. Gonna do the Golden State circa winter of 1950 after the UP and MKT shit is finished.
>>1474180They are supposed to be rebuilding the internals at the IANR shops, but I haven't heard anything about that since the repaints two years ago.
>>1474180>>1474192You'd think they could have picked a more interesting livery
Not all hope is lost, /n/iggas.
>>1474211I was hoping they would be repainted in full rocket colors, but the IANR's president was the one who bought them and got to decide the paint scheme.
>>1474245Too bad it is in Mississippi. A little far for me.
>>1474180Context?That's an E5 and an E8, no?
>>1474245>The American Railfancringe
>>1474907What are you cringing about, retard? That was on an actual GP38-2. >>1470093
>>1474907Clearly you aren't a REAL Rock Island fan.
>>1474911>>1474916>Train spergs being cringePottery
>>1474925>sperglord shitposting in a thread dealing with a topic he doesn't like on an obscure transportation boardNow *this* is autism.
>>1474956Seething dilator detected.
>>1474969Thanks for proving my point lol
>Thanks for proving my point lol
>>1474245There's also a GP9 painted in the blue scheme at the Illinois railroad museum.
>>1468847Not as atrocious as the CNW paint scheme
>>1478704What the fuck is that thing?
>>1478697 BASED. Fuck the CNW.>>1478709That is an AB6, the only such ones made and owned exclusively by the Rock Island.
>>1465589Wasn't this thread one of the longest lasting threads before? I remember it lasting for like 3 or 4 years last time around. Here's to 4 more years!
For the anon that doesn't know AB6's
>>1478863Did old cab control cars have a window from the passenger area into the cab or was it blocked and the engineer could leave his bottle of whiskey in plain sight?
>>1479006No, they all had 2 doors connecting to the cab without windows
>>1479081Good deal. What riders don't know won't concern them.
>>1480348>>1480350They definitely looked better new/in those schemes.
A daring synthesis!
>>1480861>>1480862It's weird that class 1's were so small back then that three digit locomotive numbers were common
>>1480965It's just a numbering scheme, dude. You don't start from 1 and work up. You buy a batch of certain engines in a certain year and number that batch. 30xx for new GEVOs bought in 2016. You may only get 30 of them, but then in 2017 you number them 31xx and get 20. Then you may already have 32xx-37xx so you skip to something like 38xx.
>>1480973True, see Rock Island's SD40-2 numbers.
>>1480974Yeah, I like the scheme. I can know how good, how bad, how new, how old an engine is just by knowing the number. Shit, I even know if it has air conditioning or not.
>>1480973>It's just a numbering scheme, dude. You don't start from 1 and work up.No shit dumbass you're not telling me anything I don't know
>>1481063Then what are you getting at? Railroads have been using 4 digit engine numbers for such a long time though CSXT still has a few three digit. The real rarity would be seeing a 2 digit car number. And yes, they do exist.
>>1481067>Then what are you getting at?You're autistic, you wouldn't understand
