New to production? See: https://pastebin.com/p2QUqMzj

Post what you're looking for in feedback. Be specific if possible.
GIVE feedback to GET feedback.
PLEASE ignore tripfags and attention seekers

Post WIP's on Clyp.it or Vocaroo. You may NOT link to Soundclouds, Bandcamp - there are dedicated threads for posting them and anything resembling self promotion will result in bad feedback and a three day ban from /mu/.

The state of discussion about all music making and audio topics is terrible here on /mu/, and we definitely need a dedicated board.
Here's the full argument for it:
https://pastebin.com/ZHXhfRZw
If you like the idea, let 4chan know @ https://4channel.org/feedback (under Board Suggestion)

In the meantime check out our /prod/ board:

It's buggy as shit on windows at least, it's missing tons of minor quality of life features, and it crashes all the fucking time. And the devs don't give a single fuck. Also I remember at least one dev mentioned on github somewhere that LMMS is literally supposed to be a toy rather than an actually useful real DAW so therefore they don't have to compete with other DAWs.

Well I was going to write a big ass wall of text but it's unnecessary. LMMS is fine and can do pretty much anything you want so if you're happy with it then that's good. For me it's just that it has an inefficient/tedious interface/workflow combined with a multitude of bugs and crashes, all of which make producing in LMMS infuriating at times. Especially when I think about how the ~12 year old version of FL Studio I used back in the day had a better interface and more features than present day LMMS. Anyway go on the LMMS github and look at all of the outstanding issues. See https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/issues/4877 for details about workflow/UI specifically. I've yet to try another modern DAW so I can't compare but like I said an ancient version of FL Studio had more utility and was more stable so idk man. But if it works for you and you like it no reason to switch it up
>>
>>99706322
eq everything else out of the lows, saturate, and sidechain if appropriate for the style.

For cleaner sounds in particular (e.g the 808 here) the thought process behind putting saturation on it is that you're trying to gain headroom by dialing it in to where it just starts to distort, and then backing off a bit; even though the perceived volume is the same, the volume is actually lowered while retaining its punch, so you can turn it up without eating up as much space in the limiter later on.
>>

Yeah, but I'm a buyfag and I got pigments for 40 bucks, so I'd rather stick to it. Usually, both synth cover the same ground, but FM from seems to be missing. There's stll some kind of FM from an extra osc, but I'm still learning how to use it (lots of confusion for me, mixing wt, phase and fm modulation)
>>
>>99707172
your threshold is probably too high, and your ratio might be too small
sidechaning an instrument that's not in a similar frequency band and isnt big mclarge huge in the sound stage generally wont sound like a lot anyway though

I've heard people using gear to pass sound through it like pedals and shit for better/more analog distortion or saturation. Maybe that'd be cool to have but I haven't researched how it works
>>
>>99708259
just add a white noise track at -60dB with a few async phasers for the same effect honestly, "analogue warmth" is a scam, just like the whole audiophile world
>>
>>99708348
kek, that's not what I meant exactly. I mean like a pedal would give you a different sounding distortion than you have available with vst plugins. especially if it's some obscure pedal or something 'homemade' if that exists.
>>
>>99697750
/o/ and /int/ are the other boards I post on.

>>
>>99708383
that's fair, if you have hardware that you like the sound of it can be easier to route out and back in over trying to recreate the sound
not really worth it if you dont have hardware yet in my opinion because learning how to create cool new fancy distortions in software is closer to music production as i practice it, but building stuff yourself can be very rewarding as well
musicding is a pretty good supplier for kits, if that's something you wanna look into

Amateur electronics time at this end, replaced the LCD displays on my Roland JV-1080 and Akai S2000 (all indicator LEDs swapped out to pure green on that unit too) and in time-honoured fashion something else must break in order to preserve harmony in the universe.

Evolution EVS1 not powering up at present as a result, power rectification and filtering circuits suspected.

So I'm looking on ebay for microphones, are the Neewer brand ones any good? They're stupidly cheap but I'm on a bit of a budget.
>>
>>99716578

The condenser models look like rebranded versions of those Chinese BM 700 and 800 ones, you'll find loads of those reviewed on youtube.
Quite an active modding community for these but the mods tend to gut out the casing and add more costly electronics and diaphragms to replace the electret element and pre-amps they came with, probably not what you're after.

Using one as-is? It depends on what you need it for. Watch the reviews I guess, "accurate" isn't something they do well.

IMO much better making social obligations and structures that forces you to make something rather than rely on your own willpower. The reason why most of people in the world aren't lazy pricks all the time is because many have social obligations such as a job.

How on earth is lo-fi rock like Ariel Pink mixed?

>I completely misread that and feel I have to post this anyway.
>Find friends you trust who are equally skilled and have ears
too difficult, honestly seems like anyone interested in music is also trying to make their own
>>
>>99719936

1. Use EQ to tightly isolate portions of your sound design, shave off everything noncritical

2. You need lower and more varied velocity settings on non-kick and snare percussion, it's pretty static, rolls need alterations between normal and super low velocity. You're also using the wrong snare sound for the rolls. Don't be afraid to add attack envelopes on nonessential hits to avoid the machine gun staccato

3. Elements have to fit in a rhythmic or hook pattern, you're just throwing stuff at the wall

4. Make one decent wobble/growl and give it a more central role until you know wtf you're doing, use less complicated algos on your fm and add saturation/distortion FX for harmonics instead of more operators, otherwise you get that mess of thin stuff with zero mid-body (which is the most important part)

3. No frickin subs in stereo

I'd suggest to dial back the neuro calendar a few years and make a simpler track that still has a good groove. All the old school rollers didn't need a million bass sounds

So, after almost a decade of waiting, I'm getting an akai midi keyboard delivered. I was going to get a Yamaha RX11 drum machine for cheap, but someone outbidded me last second. So, I'm getting a Korg Volca Beats Analog Drum Synthesizer and Sequencer instead. Also wanting to get a Korg Monotron Delay this week too.

I just have a question about producing electronic type music? What are some potholes to avoid as a beginner? I know that I will need to learn the instruments, so I will dedicate a lot of time to leaning piano from the OP. But, I'm not as familiar with other stuff.

My goals, tl;dr, is making experimental IDM and Berlin darkwave techno/synthwave, The following artists I will take "inspiration" from.
