What genres are you guys listening to??? how do you find everything in them repetitive after a while? maybe try broader genres instead of "70's ukranian dark ambient techno".

Or if you want to experiment with a bunch of genres that's fine. But for fuck's sake, try listening to something other than the most popular basic mucore albums of the genre. Have a bit of originality.

this is really stupid. If you're trying to get into a genre or even just dip your feet into it why would you not start with the most popular ones?
>>
>>99704542
>the most popular basic mucore albums of the genre
they're popular because they're the best in their genre
>>
>>99704702
It's fine for getting started in a genre you want to dive deeper into. My point is that these guys don't actually want to explore any genres in depth. So if they want to actually want to find their taste and expand the types of things they listen to while still exploring different albums, they should try less popular albums from genres, or just less popular genres in general. (although I still disagree with not delving deeper into genres/time periods/music scenes etc)

>>99704765
This is so untrue. A lot of things can influence popularity such the context surrounding the band, the album, what music reviewers said about it, how accessible the sound is, and more.

There are tons of albums that are held in high regard/good examples of the genre that aren't popular.
>>
>>99704542
I just get tired of musicians that just set out to be a genre like emo or shoegaze and don't try to create a unique sound or style.

>>
>>99705116
well if originality is what you're looking for, then that has less to do with genres and more to do with finding musicians that you personally think are original and unique. And let me tell you, listening to only the most popular albums of any genre is not what's going to get you there. Because a lot of popular "/mu/core" albums aren't even that original or unique. Since a lot of them have been influential there's now a ton of albums that sound the same.

>>99705209
Yea of course. but that comes with time and happens eventually. Being able to know a genre's history, how that genre came to be and what makes music within that genre good gives you so much more appreciation for albums in a genre. If you're only scraping the surface, then you miss out on so many good albums because you just cant appreciate what makes them special yet.

I should also mention that this isn't the case for all genres, because some are very straightforward or very new so you don't really need any context, but for the vast majority of well developed genres, you should really be spending more time on them to gain a good understanding.

>>99705328
Wow. You really need me to spell them out for you? I thought that was obvious. Well whatever. A good example is Sevdaliza, who's two albums (especially her new one that I'm listening to as I type this) have gotten really fantastic reviews, and is held in high regards as a good, new, trip hop/electronica album. Even though I wouldn't call her popular. And it shows where the genre's gone these days very well (because it does sound different than the classic mezzanine, maxinquaye etc but the whole genre sounds different nowadays.) But if you only listened to the most popular albums you would never really understand that. There are so many more that you really should know about but her albums are good examples.

Also I'd consider "dig deeper into genres and don't just scrape the surface of genres via popular albums" is a recommendation too. I'd talk about specific albums if I knew what type of music the posters in question gravitate towards, but they seem to not know that yet so how can I know what albums they should listen to?

In regards to the Cerberus Shoal and Alvarius B album I recommend the following:
>Big Blood- Dark Country Magic
>Angels of Light- We Are Him
>The One Ensemble- Oriole
>Fire on Fire- The Orchard

And check out some albums by Sun City Girls if you've never listened to them- Alvarius B was a member along with his brother, Richard Bishop, so you might get some enjoyment from them, as well.

>>99701487
I imagine you have already listened to him, but Sandy Bull would be very much up your alley. I have that Gordon Bok album on vinyl (but I don't like it that much). Check out these albums- they aren't American folk music, but they might be up your alley:
>Malicorne- Pierre de Grenoble
>Veronique Chalot- A L'entree du Temps Clair
>Valentin Clastrier- Grands Maitres de la Vielle a Roue
>Vox Vulgaris- The Shape of Medieval Music to Come
>The Magickal Folk of the faraway tree- The Soup & The Shilling
>Sharron Kraus- Pilgrim Chants and Pastoral Trails
>Shirley Collins- Lodestar

Finally, I recommend to you one of the most experimental traditional folk albums I have ever heard: Anna and Elizabeth- The Invisible Comes to Us

>>99704612
For albums that sound like In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and that Jordaan Mason album listen to the folllowing:
>Little teeth- Child-Bearing Man
>Mukimukimanmansu- s/t
>Thomas Mills- Chicken/Egg
>Psalters- The Divine Liturgy of the Wretched Exiles
>Cloacas- The Oatmeal Commission
>The One Ensemble- Oriole

anon, people have to start somewhere and they start with the /mu/core and rym top lists. what's the point of bullying them?
what would you think of people if they hadn't heard the rym top 100 or anything on /mu/core?
a better approach is to pick out a couple of albums in their chart and recommend something deeper in that genre

Is that a good place to start with Don Cherry? I know little about jazz to be honest. Nothing quite hits like that mix from him, but Plo Man's(and his aliases') 12 inches are essential outsider house, if you're into that.
>>
>>99744489
o uhhhh. no probably not a good place to start, it is unlike any other jazz album ever even in his own discography. maybe listen to ornette! by ornette coleman and tell me what u think. it was my very first introduction to jazz and has don cherry and ed blackwell on it as well.
