>>99700838>>99702353What genres are you guys listening to??? how do you find everything in them repetitive after a while? maybe try broader genres instead of "70's ukranian dark ambient techno". Or if you want to experiment with a bunch of genres that's fine. But for fuck's sake, try listening to something other than the most popular basic mucore albums of the genre. Have a bit of originality.
>>99696613congrats on picking the best OM albumCheck out Elder or Wood of Suicide
>>99704542this is really stupid. If you're trying to get into a genre or even just dip your feet into it why would you not start with the most popular ones?
>>99704542>the most popular basic mucore albums of the genrethey're popular because they're the best in their genre
>>99704702It's fine for getting started in a genre you want to dive deeper into. My point is that these guys don't actually want to explore any genres in depth. So if they want to actually want to find their taste and expand the types of things they listen to while still exploring different albums, they should try less popular albums from genres, or just less popular genres in general. (although I still disagree with not delving deeper into genres/time periods/music scenes etc)>>99704765This is so untrue. A lot of things can influence popularity such the context surrounding the band, the album, what music reviewers said about it, how accessible the sound is, and more. There are tons of albums that are held in high regard/good examples of the genre that aren't popular.
>>99704542I just get tired of musicians that just set out to be a genre like emo or shoegaze and don't try to create a unique sound or style.
>>99705036>>99705036ok but if you really enjoy a lot of genres sometimes you don't want to go all in on one, so you stretch out
>>99705036>There are tons of albums that are held in high regard/good examples of the genre that aren't popularlike what?
I want obscure stuff thats actually good
>>99705116well if originality is what you're looking for, then that has less to do with genres and more to do with finding musicians that you personally think are original and unique. And let me tell you, listening to only the most popular albums of any genre is not what's going to get you there. Because a lot of popular "/mu/core" albums aren't even that original or unique. Since a lot of them have been influential there's now a ton of albums that sound the same. >>99705209Yea of course. but that comes with time and happens eventually. Being able to know a genre's history, how that genre came to be and what makes music within that genre good gives you so much more appreciation for albums in a genre. If you're only scraping the surface, then you miss out on so many good albums because you just cant appreciate what makes them special yet. I should also mention that this isn't the case for all genres, because some are very straightforward or very new so you don't really need any context, but for the vast majority of well developed genres, you should really be spending more time on them to gain a good understanding.
>>99700650Tool - UndertowKyuss - Welcome to Sky ValeyOpeth - Blackwater Park
First chart ive made, whaddya think
>>99705328Wow. You really need me to spell them out for you? I thought that was obvious. Well whatever. A good example is Sevdaliza, who's two albums (especially her new one that I'm listening to as I type this) have gotten really fantastic reviews, and is held in high regards as a good, new, trip hop/electronica album. Even though I wouldn't call her popular. And it shows where the genre's gone these days very well (because it does sound different than the classic mezzanine, maxinquaye etc but the whole genre sounds different nowadays.) But if you only listened to the most popular albums you would never really understand that. There are so many more that you really should know about but her albums are good examples.

>>99705824Who says that I haven't already gave some recommendations in other posts? Also I'd consider "dig deeper into genres and don't just scrape the surface of genres via popular albums" is a recommendation too. I'd talk about specific albums if I knew what type of music the posters in question gravitate towards, but they seem to not know that yet so how can I know what albums they should listen to?

>>99743627if those mixes are anythin like the mood a side then ill peep em out. n just outta curiosity u ever heard mu by don cherry. cuz like. whole world needs to hear it.
>>99744024Is that a good place to start with Don Cherry? I know little about jazz to be honest. Nothing quite hits like that mix from him, but Plo Man's(and his aliases') 12 inches are essential outsider house, if you're into that.
>>99744489o uhhhh. no probably not a good place to start, it is unlike any other jazz album ever even in his own discography. maybe listen to ornette! by ornette coleman and tell me what u think. it was my very first introduction to jazz and has don cherry and ed blackwell on it as well.
