It's definitely a fake. It's supposed to be a casino but is semi hollow and the neck join is at the 17th fret. The truss rod cover is a piece of pvc and all the screw holes are misaligned. Looks like the fingerboard is dyed or painted. Pretty fake

Yes I'm not saying to permanently play without your thumb on the back of the neck

Here's an example. Play any chord, irrelevant what it is - and pay attention to where you're generating force from. If you're like a lot of players you will be using your thumb and fingers to clench the neck, this puts a lot of pressure/strain on the base of the thumb and top of your wrist as well as your ligaments.

Now try what I suggested in my other post which is try to play the same chord without your thumb on the back of the neck. It'll probably feel a little awkward but if you're doing it right it should almost feel like you're pulling the neck toward the side of your body. You should feel less pressure in your hand and wrist, and you should feel the larger muscles toward the top of your forearm working rather than feeling like you are clenching really hard.

The idea here isn't to get you to stop playing with your thumb on the back of the neck, but to be more conscious of where you're generating force from and to try to do it with larger muscle groups as opposed to what a lot of players do which is rely on more of a vice-grip between their fingers and thumb.

Hope that cleared it up, as a reminder you need to be aware of training your extensors as well because a lot of players over-train their tensors. I like the rubber band method I linked earlier, but I'm sure you can find a bunch of different ways to accomplish the same thing.

>>
>>85833734
I'm pretty OCD about stuff like this, but I want an SG with the jack on the bottom, not on the front. the High Performance 2019 had this, but I've played it and don't like it for various reasons. Also the look of the guitar is huge for me. I'm think the classic red looks ok, but I'm more interested in some kind of glossy fade. I appreciate classic Gibson feel but don't care much for classic Gibson looks.

>>85833898
I kinda want a neck with an ebony fretboard for it, but that would cost more than what I paid for the guitar...
>>
It’s snowing and I’m changing strings. Why is guitar so comfy?

Yo, just dropped into this thread & I feel you on the Les

>distance self from Les when different models come out circa Richlite Gibson etc.
>get aged 23, actually buy my first guit
>could have bought a Les
>get a niche guitar by custom builder
>Gets stolen
>Earn my way to alternative
>lose it in flood
>6 years later can afford a Les again
>humbly jump for studio tribute
>literally best feel guitar
>absolutely sound's trash through Princeton

tl;dr why is there no physically good instrument that isn't a flagship Gibson product with Humbuckers? Why doesn't Gibson make Vox or Marshall voiced combo amps to fight big-boi Fender somehow while expanding their brand properly?

I'm not sure how to articulate it other than the layout of a piano makes everything make so much more sense. The different scales for different keys, voicings, inversions, triads and fifths, using less space by making different combinations of chord variations next to each other. I have a buddy who keeps showing me different variations of guitar chords with different voicings to add some depth to our songs, and he just kept playing weird guitar shapes and it kept going over my head what he was doing, or rather I understood the what he was doing, but visually I kept getting really confused. I guess because I still don't know my way around the guitar neck too well. But playing one of my songs on piano, trying out different variations was kinda mind blowing.
I'm fucking retarded I know.
>>
>>85834518
I've got a few things to say about this from personal experience of studying things like theory at music school without owning a keyboard.

One of the advantages of guitar is that a lot of the learning is visual. So you can literally just transpose the same scale and chord shapes starting from a different fret and voila you can play in all keys. really though, it's not that literally that simple but ye it's far easier than learning a completely different fingering on say a piano or sax.

Strictly stacking thirds to make chords is a meme btw. It's good for learning but for making actual music you should lean to using less standard voicings so it sounds more interesting. Just my take anyway.

If you just learn your instrument better, you don't have to worry about all its limitations so much.

piano is much more conducive for an intro to theory, but standard tuning is fantastic once you have a handle on it
> because I still don't know my way around the guitar neck too well. But playing one of my songs on piano, trying out different variations was kinda mind blowing.
just wait until you get more comfortable with the neck and have a better grasp on chord construction. If you're working on any tunes highly recommend writing out a lead sheet style page with the chords/melody and practice it on guitar and piano. It'll get you writing ideas down, and there's a compounding effect from practicing the same material on different instruments

Nobody cares fuck off.
>>
>>85834895
My life is better than yours and it makes you mad. I’m sorry.
>>
>>85834827
Right. When I figured out that barre chords were just the chord of the corresponding top two string for E and A shapes, my mind was blown. I felt really dumb not having figured that out but now I can play everything in barre or power chord shapes as well as their minor and 7th variations. Same thing with the small number of scales I've learned too. It's cool shit and I love those break through moments. But right now I'm still struggling to figure out the visual patterns for different chord voicings I can apply all across the neck, so that it's generally applicable as a tool, instead of just one instance of how to play one thing. With piano it's a little easier. Oh just drop the fifth to the lower version, or mix and match this or that, and the pattern of piano keys just makes it visually easier to swap things out. For guitar, my stab at standard tuning, is that it isn't consistent like a piano. There are weird jumps in things you have to just remember when jumping between strings. Or maybe I just haven't had that break through moment when it comes to the relation between the strings for EADGBE. There has to be some reason that's the standard tuning. But at the moment I can't figure it out.
>>
>>85834892
You mean like write out my singing melody in standard notation? Oh jesus. I still don't have the bars in standard notation memorized. "Like where the fuck is middle C? Oh there it is now we count." I also would have no idea how to figure out the melody other than sitting there at a piano for hours upon hours. I guess at some point I should put the hours into that sort of thing.
>>
>>85834518
Sounds like you just need to either learn to play guitar better or communicate with your guitarist using words. Standard tuning is very convenient for most things and that's why it's standard.

I could say piano is stupid because on guitar I can play a progression and easily transpose to any key without changing almost anything-unless I'm using open strings. But the truth is I'm just shit at piano.
>>
>>85835023
>There has to be some reason that's the standard tuning
i think it's a historical reason so that thirds can be played quite comfortably but don't quote me on that

>For guitar, my stab at standard tuning, is that it isn't consistent like a piano
I mean it kind of is. It's just fourths. Pretty easy to follow the circle of fourths/fifths that way. And if you play and practice enough you just dont even think about how the G to B strings is a third.

It doesn't sound like you're making excuses at all but don't get slack by thinking that guitar tuning has flaws that hinder your creativity in any way. Just gotta learn the instrument. Plain and simple
>>
>>85834518
in standard tuning, with the exception of one interval, the strings are tuned in perfect fourths to eachother
it's not apparent at first, but this actually makes things pretty convenient

Yes, I need to do both of those things. That's part of the reason why I jumped on the piano, I thought it might help. I also wanted to learn the intro to curb your enthusiasm.
>>85835238
>I mean it kind of is. It's just fourths
Could you elaborate on this? You mean like the relationship between strings? Like when I'm playing the minor scale? If that's what you mean I think I need to go work that out.
>>
>>85835101
Yea that's one option, even just doing it with the chords would be a big help but if you transcribe your vocal lines that would be another compounding factor that would help you get better

>>
>>85833992
Why not just use a guitar cable with a right angle connector like this?
>>
>>85835538
When you go up a string, it goes up by the interval of a perfect fourth. Let's call it a fourth so it's easier.

A is four notes away from E (E F G A). . Repeat the same starting from A (A B C D). D is a fourth from A and G is a fourth from D.
The spanner in the works is going from G to B which is a third (G A B)

I believe it was designed this way so that you get another E when you go a fourth up from the B string. So that you have the range of two octaves in the same fret position.

>>
>>85838428
The reason to buy a shitty 200$ guitar is to make sure you like it for longer than a month and give up. There’s also investment in picks/straps/stands/amps/cables/books/strings that isn’t included in your first guitar purchase.

Safe buys are any Yamaha Pacifica (can vouch for the 112V), Epiphone or Squier above $200. Ibanez is likely fine too. I have an Ibanez SR305 bass and it's nice enough for the money.
Buy a guitar that makes you want to play it when you look at it.

Why would you want someone to throw away hundreds into a hobby they didn’t actually want to pursue?
>>
>>85841376
It's a bit of a trade off. If you get a guitar that plays like shit you're sure as hell not gonna want to play it, which will likely mean you'll give.
You can cheap out to a certain degree, but there's a limit.
It's better to spend a bit more (as in at least $200 on a guitar) to make sure you get a decent instrument simply to increase your chances of sticking with it.
Because it would be a shame to miss out on an incredibly rewarding hobby just because you bought a crap instrument.
There's also the argument to be made that higher quality (and thus more expensive) guitars retain more of their value should you want to sell it.

How the fuck do I mute extra strings when bending? Every time I do a bend the string I'm bending into snaps under or over my finger and makes noise. Or worse, it "snaps" loose from my finger when releasing the bend and it rings out.
>>
>>85846275
well assuming the issue is playing guitar and singing at the same time, the best way thing to do is to just find a practice room and let loose. It will sound shit at first, but keep trying more and more and you'll get some basics down.

if you need to break it down into practising singing one rhythm whilst playing another, whilst playing/ singing only 1 note/chord

conversely, practice singing melodies that differ from the note/chord the guitar is playing and do it to simple rhythms. Then combine the 2.

Once you git gud, sing the backing vocals to can't stop whilst playing the guitar part, it's pretty challenging.

>>85846426
your action is probably too low, i had this problem for a while and just gave up on low action because i bend a lot. if you bend a string up and the string you're bending into slides under your finger then your action is too low. you don't need to use super high action, just enough so the string doesn't slide under your finger.

If you’re playing more offspring style, you want to kerb the upper mids and high end of the bass.

You should see the bass as a low end extension of the guitar for that style of music.

The guitar and the bass should sound like 1 instrument, if you get what i mean

You are aware that with tubes, price doesn't necessarily equal quality, right? If a certain 6550 made for a rare piece of airline equipment costs $400 each doesn't mean it sounds better in a guitar amp than a $40 tube. Tubes are made for applications. I'm not saying that yours aren't good...just that bragging about the price of the tubes in your guitar amp is a dead giveaway that you don't know as much as you're letting on.

Well yes it doesn’t *neccesarily* indicate quality, but its generally a good benchmark.

And the distinction i was making was the fact my tubes are NOS. You can get modern 6550s for alot cheaper but they don’t sound quite as good. Diminishing returns applies alot, the difference in tone isn’t necessarily identifiable to someone not looking for it, but in general NOS will be more expensive and better quality than their modern counterparts.
