Anger towards the government, clear societal decay and loss of trust compared to just a few years earlier, bleak atmosphere, etc. >>115496420 kind of has a point about it really, it's an album that takes you back to a very specific point in time. Demon Days and Hail to the Thief also have a similar thing going on, they're not albums that I'd say were the best of the 2000s but if I want to feel like Bush is president and every news segment starts with coverage about Iraq then I'll give one of them a listen.

I remember it really kicked off in 2005 after the response to Hurricane Katrina, but it was already starting to well up before then. 2004 - 2007 was like this weird cultural moment where everyone was pissed the fuck off and shit like Demon Days, Hail to the Thief, and American Idiot served as the soundtrack. I'm sure there are other examples but those are the ones that immediately come to mind when I think of that backlash era.

Not saying the man WASN'T criticized in a public fashion during his first run, but by the time his second came around, the Iraq War, how how he handled Katrina, the patriotic ground swell that rose in 2001 was beginning to die out. I just remember being glad when his second term was finally up, not because I disliked the guy, but it mean we'd finally end "BUSH BAD", which I was already tired of hearing in 07', as a teenager, where the internet and social media wasn't even 1/4th of what it was today.

It was their proper sell out album. The band got a taste of it when Good Riddance blew up and saved Nimrod's album sales, but when their follow up Warning released, a album still kind of "in line" with their older stuff, it flopped bad for the band. So they captured what was the zeitgeist of rock music at the time (pop punk/rock) and just make their dumb, overblown, "concept album", political thing. Also marked a weird evolutionary end point for the band, as they've just basically just attempted to repeat the sound of this album numerous times since.
