I heard about this a long time ago when I was a kid and I watched the show Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide. Is this true and why exactly? It seems kind of a dumb thing to do, they both look like similar guitars just with different sounds?
>>115492710yes. acoustic teaches how to properly hold down the strings and mute unwanted noise/buzzing. these are important to having good tone. plus its cheaper as a newbie to get into as you dont need to buy an amp and an acoustic can be played anywhere.
>>115492710No. Clearly you’re not interested in acoustic so just jump straight to electric. They’re easier to play anyway. I can assure you I am not biased as I only play acoustic myself.
Nope. Started playing electric for like 3 years and then picked up acoustic along the way. Been 5 years now
There are differences. Acoustic is harder to play lead on because of the action and heavier gauge strings. It helps in some ways to learn acoustic first, you'll build strength. But you'll have to adjust to not overplay on electric later and learn to control the volume, string muting, etc
>>115492710You should start on acoustic. The heavier strings and generally higher action will force you to get strong fingers. You will also have to play more accurately to sound good. When you switch to electric you will notice it is much much easier to play. You also will want to get the basics down either way before you do anything you can only do on electric, so it’s really not worth it to start on electric. Eventually you’ll want an acoustic sound anyway.
>>115492710This show aged so badly, I don't even remember exactly what he said in this particular episode but it was something along the lines of "I want to be a rockstar, like the foo fighters" and he listed a couple of other boring ass rock bands while a guitar sound effect played in the back, the 2000s were cringe as fuck.
>>115492710What music do you want to play? Acoustic music or rock or whatever else you can play on electric. If you want to play rock then just get an electric otherwise you’ll be playing music you don’t like on acoustic for months.
>>115493749I want to play rock so I guess I am going with electric, how much does a electric guitar cost? I want one that is decent, like a guitar that is between bad to good, just average.
>>115492710Ned is half right. I wouldn’t really recommend it either way, personally. It’s up to you. Acoustics are harder to play on for a beginner, but they are cheaper. You’d probably develop a better sense of tone on an acoustic. Electric with distortion hides a lot of mistakes. It’s ultimately up to you. I don’t see it making a significant difference.
>>115492710acoustic can help you develop better playing habits but it's all really a matter of what you want to play. You certainly don't need to play acoustic if all you plan on doing is releasing a black metal album that sounds like it was recorded at the bottom of a trash can.
>>115493816Like 400 for a decent one, and that’s just the guitar. A decent amp might be 100-200. You’re gonna have to research the different types of electric guitars out there and decide which one you want, but the popular answer is probably the Stratocaster since it’s versatile.
>>115493844You can play the electric guitar with headphones correct? Like you can plug in headphones into the amp to be quiet?
>>115493844Can you self teach yourself electric guitar? What are some good guides online to teach yourself?
>>115493894Yeah>>115493913>Can you self teach yourself electric guitar? What are some good guides online to teach yourself?Justinguitar on youtube is the get-go variant, but it's a bit easier to use his website with straightforward "modules/courses" structure (they all are free expect for music theory and some other somewhat advanced course I don't remember) and easy progress tracking
>>115493913I personally taught myself chords by trial and error. The songs I liked were fairly simple. I’d just search the chords and play along. If I didn’t know how to play Cadd9 or Dm, I’d scroll up, look at the diagram and memorize it. It eventually comes easy to you. It’s probably not an intuitive way to learn, but it’s how I did it. You hear something you like, look up a tab and force yourself to learn. I think learning what you like is a great motivator. Once you read it, learn it, play it, you can’t help but smile when you realize you’re playing it exact and you learned it. If you’re looking to do sweep picking and stuff, I’d definitely recommend videos.
No I learned on electric first through tabs . First I learned a couple riffs then I went to shred solos like megadeth and nevermore
nah, it's just easier for newbies to get discouraged on electronic.
>>115492710no. the odds that you drop guitar are already decent enough, if you have no desire to play acoustic you're going to be like why the hell am I doing this and quit.
It might sound goofy but I found learning on a cheap ukulele first very helpful. Never really found the acoustic much fun, just inconvenient. Going from uke to electric feels like a more natural upgrade, ironically
>>115493844What type of guitar is best for metal?
>>115492710STOP BEING A SCARED LITTLE CLOSET QUEEN AND COME OUT AND GET UR ACOUSTIC TO FUCK UR FINGERS UP LIKE A REAL BITCH
>>115492710Noo, but acoustic guitar is basically guitar without gimmicks so if you are good at it it makes sure you aren't a fucking hack on other stringed instruments
>>115497501yep acoustic forces you to have a clean fucking tone via muting and proper picking technique. its hard to hear that unplugged with an electric and yea you can always get an amp but thats more expensive for a newbie, even assuming you get the most cheap shit practice amp.
>>115493620it's a show for children, anon.
>>115492710no you dont. acoustic will make electric much easier physically. but you dont need to
>>115494186if someone handed you an acoustic you'll sound like shit cause you never learned how to play a real instrumentyou are garbage you arent a guitar player
I find electric is harder to control because every stray nick and hit is going to be amplified so it sounds like shit. Acoustic is more controlled, ie your mistakes aren't amplified as muchalso you should only play electric if you plan on playing live
Starting with Classical guitar is the best since you focus on technique on better finger placement
>>115493499"Strong" fingers are overrated. It's really much more about using the correct fretting technique. (i.e., position your thumb on the back of the neck correctly, and only press down one digit at a time, unless you're executing a bend.)
>>115495193Anything with humbuckers
>>115492723You don't need an amp for electric either. It's already loud enough to hear your mistakes if you play somewhere quiet.
>>115493816>how much does a electric guitar costAbout $100. Get the cheapest you can find, then watch guitar setup videos on Youtube and fix all the problems yourself. Alternatively, pay $500 for one that's already good. End result will sound identical.
