The domestic dog is a subspecies of wolf, so maybe you could say different human races are subspecies of Homo sapien too. Not that modern politics would let you say that, and I doubt any science journal would refer to human races as subspecies out of fear of reprisal. I think the main point was that FiM ponies would be too genetically different from our ponies to be the same species.
