>You take a deep breath, close your eyes again, and go for it. Imagining a lightbulb turning on like your cutie mark, you cast a pulse of mana, toward that same point you had been focused on before. You hear a WHOOSH in front of you, coupled with a sudden wave of heat. Moments later, the same happens slightly to your left, in front of Aversion. You open your eyes.

>Seasoned: Okay, that was pretty good. They're both a little off-center, so they'll probably burn out a little earlier than it would otherwise, but these turned out alright. To refresh them, all you have to do is cast more mana into them, like the focus step again. So, uh... Any questions?

>You look at Aversion, Seasoned, and Lilac, who all seem rather taken aback at your outburst.

>Aversion: OMG? What does that even mean?

>Light: Erm... Sorry, I got a little carried away there... Thank you so much Seasoned; this was really amazing of you to show us!

>Seasoned: It's no problem, really. It'll keep me from having to come out here and dry the pages myself, at least! Um... Ah, I almost forgot! Unless you want to wait for the spell to burn up on its own, you have to focus on the center of the orb-thing and cast outward from there. It's kinda like how you focus on the outside of an object and cast inward when you levitate something, but in reverse. Go ahead and try it, though I'd probably stand back if I were you; this can get kinda hot if you're too close.
>>
>>39873100
send.tolly
Let's stand back a bit and try to focus on the center of the orb and cast outwards like Seasoned said!
Assuming that is to cancel the spell.
I also did want to ask
>How long does it take for the spell to burn up on its own? What happens if we touch the orb?
>>
send.tolly
>>39873100
Here are the questions that I was going to send when the thread died:
Can we use this spell to feed the solar panels? Or to jumpstart the dragon fire link? Can we merge several suns together? Is it radioactive? What if we'll try to ignite it underwater? Will firewood burn better if we soak it in mana?
>>
>>39873100
send.tolly
Not criticizing this, and aversion wouldn’t know what that means realistically, but Twilight in season one says omg in excitement, and that’s why I felt comfortable using it with light.
>>39873154
I was literally about to ask if the solar panels can use these kek. Also that’s a neat idea to infuse items with mama to then ignite them. It makes me think about twilight turning into rapidash in feeling pinkie keen, and I like that that makes more sense with this explanation of magic!
>sorry Avie-Aversion! I’m sorry it’s hard to not call you that… erm omg mean oh my god. I saw it used in a story… but I can’t really remember where I had seen it used.

>You stand back a bit, focusing once more on the center of the orb. You cast outwards and watch as the orb expands slightly, thinning and dissipating from the inside out. Aversion does the same.

>Seasoned: Yep, that's how it's done!

>Light: How long does it take for the spell to burn up on its own? What happens if we touch the orb?

>Seasoned: It depends on how big you make it, but normally about two and a half hours for one that size. As for what happens if you touch it, you get exactly what you expect: burnt.

>>39873154
>Light: Can we use this spell to feed the solar panels? Or to jumpstart the dragonfire link? Can we merge several suns together? Is it radioactive? What if we try to ignite it underwater? Will firewood burn better if we soak it in mana?

>With each new question, Seasoned looks more and more overwhelmed. Finally, when you seem to be finished, she hazards a response.

>Seasoned: I'm sorry, but I don't know, I don't know, and I don't know. I'm not great with magic; I just know enough to get by, plus a few tricks to show off. I assume you wouldn't be able to, uh, "feed" the solar panels with it, or start that dragonfire-whatzit either, but I wouldn't know. I've never tried merging more than one of them, I doubt it's radioactive, and I really don't think trying to make one underwater would work out well. As for the firewood thing, you know mana isn't a liquid, right? It's an energy or something-- you may be able to light firewood with it, but I bet you'd need a different method than what I just showed you.

I've never really been sure, honestly. I've seen a lot of dates mentioned in books, and while a lot of them are pretty obviously set in the past or the future, the books themselves were written at different times. I've never been able to narrow it down to a specific year... I can't imagine this date was that long ago, but I don't know exactly HOW long ago.

>>39874543

Like, it looks like a resort to not raise any eyebrows, but under the surface, it's being used for something else...
>You giggle, adopting at joking tone.
>Light: ...and at the top of the chain, the gremlins are calling all the shots!

>You wink at Aversion, earning a chuckle from her.

>Light: Sorry, just kind of thinking out loud. What do you think?

>Aversion: As... dramatic as such a scheme might be, wouldn't all the staff have to be in on it for it to work? Even then, Mr. Venture has kinda given us free rein of the place so far, even to places the guests aren't allowed to go. Why would he do that, if he had something dark and sinister to hide? And why would he need an investor like Sunshower's dad if this is all a front? I do agree with one thing you just said though... The whole setup does seem strange.

The Rec Room is pretty nice especially with all the great art Tolly has made for the games, but it still does feel a little odd for a resort island to have. I guess sometimes ponies just want to take a break and enjoy a game or two.
Strata is the pony who'd know about the island's construction, and Overboard is the skipper! I really hope they're okay.

>Remedy: No, no, I understand. It might be better for me to answer everything in a different order, though... Um, first, the wounds on her body were sections of skin that had sloughed off. N-none... none of them were post-mortem, if I'm not mistaken. This can happen in some mana-borne diseases, specifically ones that cause a pony's thaumic core to bleed mana through the body, though its only in very extreme cases involving other underlying conditions... Unicorns are most susceptible, but all ponies can be at risk. However, I really don't believe we're in any danger. Mana-borne diseases CAN be contagious, so I set out some pM strips to measure the body's natural mana radiation. They've all read neutral so far, which means that her thaumic core is already drained. Nopony can catch a mana-borne disease if there's no mana to catch it from, but I'll still be closely monitoring everypony on the island for any symptoms. As for what the disease actually is, e-erm... I have to admit, I-I don't know. Like I said, I've only heard of this kind of thing happening when other conditions complicate a mana bleed, but it seems like she was completely healthy otherwise...

>Remedy: Yes, unfortunately. They aren't as common though, due to how volatile mana is.

>Light: What are the symptoms associated with a mana bleed? Is there any way for ponies to protect themselves from something like that? I take it there's not a mana bandage, right?

>Remedy: I, erm... I'll be honest, I don't know all that much about mana bleeds off the top of my head; I'm not a specialist. I brought a few books with me to the island though, so hopefully I'll have more answers later. What I DO know is that mana bleeds are normally only associated with damage to a pony's thaumic core from severe magic overuse; basically, as long as you don't push your core too hard, you shouldn't have any problems. As far as I know, the most obvious symptoms are magic being either easier or more difficult to draw than normal. There, uh... There are medications and medical spells that can aid in healing and re-regulating your thaumic core, but nothing like a bandage.

>>39885124
>Light: Wait, wasn't she an earth pony?
>You glance toward the boat.
>Light: How can an earth pony catch a mana-borne disease? C-could we be in danger, since we used magic close to her when we first saw the boat?

>Remedy: Everypony has mana AND uses magic, just in different ways. A unicorn's horn allows for direct casting, so magic is often associated with them, but pegasus flight and earth pony strength are also magic processes that use mana. Like I said, unicorns are most susceptible to mana-borne diseases, but anypony can catch them. I doubt you all would've caught anything though; the chances that her thaumic core only finished draining between the time you found her and now are really low. Still, if you or your friends start experiencing any symptoms, make sure you tell me as quickly as possible.

Strength? But what about the legendary resilience of earth ponies? Is it magical? No, if their resilience was always magical, then earth ponies would almost never die of anything but thaumic exhaustion. Their bodies would react to any trauma or physical exhaustion with magic, and then thaumic overuse woud be so common that you'd know everything about it, like now you know everything about basic first aid. So it can't be the case, right? But perhaps at least some earth ponies can sometimes magically push their bodies to endure thrist and hunger.

>Light: Could a mana-borne illness pass through the dragonfire link thing? What if there were a magic pandemic on the mainland, and someone broke the link intentionally to keep it from spreading?

pretty open as far as what to do now. lots of options. Here's my little todo list:
- look for Mr. Venture in the maintenance building or his room and maybe do some snooping if he isn't there
- meet up with the rest of the girls and get some dinner
- ask Patch if bad mana could spread through a dragonfire link

- explore the rest of the island
- try to have a heart to heart with Bally (oh, that reminds me, we should definitely ask Aversion about Bally while we're here with her)

Uhh... dang it, probably the worst pony to ask about the raffle. Especially considering we already told Dazzle and Sunshower than Aversion and Light won said raffle. Lucky is probably the most proud about winning, and Brilliance was already suspicious of us. Mr. Venture doesn't want us telling the guests that we just ended up here after leaving the House, and our cover story was suppose to be that we also won the raffle. I'm not really sure what to say, lol.

>Lucky: I'm sure she didn't intend for it, too... My grandfoals have always been rather different from each other. Bright is a little more outgoing, and Brilliance is a little more, uh, calculating. That used to be a big help to them; they even ran a shop together a while back! But something changed a few years ago-- I don't know what-- and now they start arguing at the drop of a hat... Sorry, I've gone on rambling without, huff, even answering your question. Your friend mentioned that Brilliance was being quiet, which led to Bright telling her to speak more. >Bally: Yeah, I can go to dinner with you! So... the rules... Basically, from what the box says, you have to try and pull a block out from anywhere in the tower, then stack it back on top to keep the pattern going. The game ends when somepony knocks the tower over, with that pony being the loser. Oh, and you can't pull a block out if it's directly underneath the topmost layer! I think the rules also said something about magic being off-limits too. Uh... Did I miss anything?

>As Bally explains the rules, Lucky carefully stacks the blocks, taking her time to keep them straight.

Ah, we also sometimes set the rule where we could only use one hoof to tease out the blocks. That was mostly to keep our griffon friend from having an unfair advantage though; those talons of his made using both, uh... forelegs a little too easy for him. We could do that, if you want.

>You carefully nudge a middle piece out using a hoof. It's difficult to get it started, but once it begins moving, the block slides out just fine. You place it on top of the tower.

>>39908286
You can just play it through the regular view if you would like, or I could zoom in, like how Battlecloud was played. To pull out blocks though, it might be easiest if you specified either the front or side of the tower in relation to Light, then the block's level, then whether you want the left, middle, or right one. So, for the piece you mentioned, it would be the front, level 5, middle block. After that, all you have to say is which place-- left, middle, or right-- on top of the tower you'd like to place it! Though, we can do something differently if any of you would prefer that.

Just to fill empty time
last night I had a dream that me and fluttershy were in a very blue room with light pillars coming through a window or something. She was very cute, and we were sitting across from one another, but we were just on the floor. She pulled out a map that had little stickers on different areas of the map, and she started telling me about how we were going to rescue the zoo animals, and I don’t remember what she had said to well, cause I’m a perv, and was focused on her butt, and face being so pretty. It reminded me of a really old dream from when I was little. I had seen a kitten in a garbage can that was injured, and I was to scared to help it, but when I determined that I had to help it out it wasn’t there, and then I checked a lot of dream garbages but it wasn’t around. That dream was when I was super young, and it’s been awhile since I thought of it too! I’ve weirdly had lots of zoo heist dreams, but I like having part of one with her like that!

>Light: Hmmm, do you have any that you felt included a particularly lucky win? Or maybe one that centered around Weka!

>You carefully slide the middle block of level 6 out, though the Weka tower is starting to wobble. You set it on the right side of the top, which aids in restabilizing the structure.

>Lucky: Well, erm... Unfortunately, my luck with games tends to be fairly poor. In regard to Weka though, I suppose I could tell you about this one time I played it with that griffon friend I'd mentioned before. His name was Gustav, Gus for short; he went to my school for a while as part some kind of exchange program. He came to my birthday party once, and we played Weka together with my cousin, Darling, and one of her friends... huff, her name's escaping me right now...

>As she speaks, Lucky's eyes seem drawn to a scene neither you nor Bally can see. Bally quickly removes the right block of level 7 and places it on top. The upper half of the tower wobbles back and forth precariously, before miraculously settling back down. Bally doesn't notice though, her focus solely on Lucky.

>Lucky: Anyway, Gus had never played Weka before then, so Darling decided to mess with him. While I was gone for a moment-- I, huff, think I was in the restroom-- she and her friend convinced him that, when the tower falls over, everypony has to jump up and shout "Weka" over and over while doing some ridiculous dance called the "Weka Dance". When I later ended up knocking over the tower, and he started squawking... Oh, the looks on all the adults' faces! The worst part was that Gus was just confused as to why nopony joined him! He gave it his all, too.

>Lucky glances down toward the tower and gently nudges the middle block out of level 10. After a few tense moments, she's finally able to pull it out and complete level 13.

>Lucky: I'll admit, I was pretty mad with Darling at the time, but Gus ended up finding the whole thing hilarious afterward. It, huff, became a little inside joke between us.

Bally follows you, slowly taking out the left block of level 11. After waiting for the tower to settle back down, she sets it on top in the right.

>Lilac nods and leaves to the Kitchen.

>Light: Alright, that sounds great to me! I'm glad I'll get to see the sunset with you both again! I think Aversion wouldn't want to be woken up this time, and we'll see what Lost wants to do is she's still awake. Would you like my Lemonade, Bally? I wouldn't mind waiting for the other one if you'd like a drink.

>Bally: No, thank you; I'm fine with waiting for my own to come out. Besides, who knows what you could've had Lilac or Seasoned do to that drink, knowing that I would come here late... You could have asked them to poison it! Or curse it! Or mix ketchup into it!

>Tizzy: U-um, I've been h-here since she o-ordered it, and she hasn't done a-anything to it.

>You investigate your Cheesecake.
This... This is phenomenal. The crust is neither too flaky nor too mushy, and the filling is chilled without being too cold to eat. And I haven't even gotten to the sauce, which adds a sweet, stronger flavor on top of the soft flavor of the filling! However, it's not so strong as to entirely overpower the rest of the dessert, instead serving to highlight and even elevate the Cheesecake's overall taste. In fact--

Let's see if there's anything we can read on the fourth page! I also imagine we should check somewhere in the middle of the JOURNAL or as far down as the pages have currently dried, just to see what's there.

I've gone through the first three pages, but there wasn't much there beyond a part of her name, the mention of returning the JOURNAL to Past Due's Apartments if found, and part of a date from what i'd assume is a journal entry that was rendered unreadable due to the water. Erm, I guess we should check out the fourth page now.

>You slowly peel off the top three pages on at a time, slowly making your way down to the fourth. Unfortunately, it looks like this page is completely unreadable. There are a few spots that kind of still look like letters, but without any context, you can't discern what they could mean. You decide to try checking as far into the stack of pages as you can, finding that about halfway through the stack, the pages are still damp. This page does seem to have the most readable text you've seen though, by far:

>It's kinda faded here, but I can read a lot more of it compared to the earlier pages. Erm, it seems this entry is about Floral and her father. It seems she bought him a card for Father's Day, and she didn't know if he had plans on how to celebrate. Floral seemed to express that she hopes they don't go fishing, since riding in boats makes her nauseous... So it's likely she wouldn't have gotten in the boat unless she really needed to...
Very sad times, poor Floral. I think we should probably flip over the stack of pages so the bottom can dry out some more. The latest entries are the ones that will hopefully give us some insight into what happened.

I had a very long standing fear of large bodies of water, and so I too feel bad for floral having to end up on a boat out in the ocean like that. I know I’d have a panic attack being on such a small dinghy out at sea like she was… it sucks to see such truly beautiful beings suffer

Let's cast a new heating spell some where a good bit away from the JOURNAL. Just remember the steps Seasoned showed us, and be sure to aim directly in the middle of the mana orb as we cast the spark to ignite our mini-sun.
You can break this up as you see fit, Tolly. I realize this is a lot of action for a single scene, so I'm kinda letting everyone know what I think would be my plan of action.

>You, Bally, and Tizzy all back up from the JOURNAL, with Tizzy backing up the most. You draw mana into your horn, as you would with any spell, before casting it out in front of you, above the STACK OF PAGES and JOURNAL COVER. After you feel like you have a good amount of mana casted, you finally start the hard part, igniting it. You cast a pulse of mana as close to the center as you can. After aiming as best you can, the orb begins growing; however, it becomes evident that you were a little off. Fortunately though, the mini sun doesn't seem unstable.

>Patch: You're a little more optimistic than I am, that's for sure... We may be able to do something like that, but it'd need to stay in one piece the whole way back to the mainland. The current plan is to send Clear out flying and see if she can safely cloud hop her way there first. It depends on how charged the storm clouds are, though...

>>39970141
>Light: Erm, well... I do kinda want to know what's going on at the mainland before we focus on leaving. Sorry for bringing the mood down, Patch. Erm, this isn't exactly the best question to raise the morale... but it kinda seems like Burst doesn't like us much... Do you think we might have upset her somehow?

>Patch sighs.
>Patch: Yeah... She doesn't. She's not all that talkative about it, but I think she just doesn't fully trust that you four aren't bad actors or something. I can't really blame her either; a lot of pretty terrible things have happened, both before and after you appeared, and your story IS pretty hard to believe... I don't think you've done anything specific though, outside of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

>I guess that's fair. I know our background is definitely strange, but we don't want to harm anypony. It's been really nice to get to meet you all, and experience things out here! I do feel bad for us just showing up out of nowhere with everything else that's going on, but we're trying to help out where we can. I hope Burst can trust us at some point... Oh, and there's five of us!

>Patch follows along with what you're saying, nodding along to show his support and understanding, until suddenly looking up in confusion at your correcting him.

>Patch: Five? Who's the fifth? There's you three, then the one you were here with earlier, then... Oh! She's the other pony you were with at the meeting! What was her name again?

>Patch points a wing at Tizzy, who flinches slightly. Patch quickly retracts his wing and stops pointing.
>Patch: --is, uh, Tizzy, and yours is Bally. Um... Actually, now that I think about it, I'm not sure I know your gray friend's name either. I'm sorry... I probably should've asked when I saw you both a few hours ago.

>As the conversation dies down, you hear the NORTH door rattle a bit, before Remedy enters. She looks rather exhausted, her mane and tail disheveled. She smiles at Patch, before noticing you, Bally, and Tizzy.

>Light: Erm, did everything go okay?

>Remedy solemnly looks toward the wall, as if she could see through it and at the boat. She sighs, before turning back to you.

>Remedy: I, um... I'm not sure... The body's thaumic core was practically rotted away... I've never heard of something like that happening before. I-if that happened w-while she was alive, then-- th-then even just her body's passive use of mana w-would've caused a mana bleed like that...

I don't think I feel any different than normal, outside of being really tired... I definitely haven't noticed the symptoms Remedy had mentioned, at least.

>Bally and Tizzy nod, murmuring in agreement. A sense of relief evidently washes over Remedy as she smiles back.

>Remedy: I'd really appreciate that. There are still a number of questions left to answer... Latency period, what kind of pathogen it was, just how contagious it may be... If you find anything out, please tell me.

>Light: Do you think this might be related to the clouds coming from the mainland?

>Remedy: Maybe? I've never heard of a mana-borne disease being transmitted through clouds, but I really don't know much about clouds. I think pegasus magic involves manipulating the water molecules in them somehow, right?

>Patch: Uh, yeah! That's how we can stand on them, push them around, build with them, and make them rain. Still, I'm pretty sure our mana leaves the clouds pretty quickly, so I doubt mana-borne diseases could hide in them for very long. U-um... Burst would be the pony to ask about that, though...

>Well, I don't know exactly what it looks like... but a thaumic core is where a pony's magic comes from. Apparently all ponies have them, even though their magic isn't as obvious as a unicorn's. I wouldn't say it's a bad thing! Sadly things go like this, but getting to experience Equestria and meet other ponies is a dream come true! I wouldn't say it's too sad, but I don't know if that's something we should say honestly... Regret is a thing I honestly don't want to vocalize at this point, because I feel like it's detrimental to everypony's morale. Plus the Housemates didn't have much of a choice, the House was reacting poorly to Aversion. Rekindling our relationship with her came with the potential cost of being exposed to the real world. I feel like saying we regret leaving the House is saying we regret finding Aversion, in harsher terms. Love you Flutterfren, but I feel like saying that is definitely not something we should do.
I typed out for instead of know somehow, lol

Ye You’re right, Avie most definitely would’ve made all this worth it for Light thinking about it more now, even if she feels regret now, or later I think she’s more than content with having gotten Avie her freedom of existence again.
