I am writing a really weird story with a bat pony as the main character. How do I describe her using echolocation to detect things? What would being able to do that be like? Is it as good as being able to see?
>>39444763Based. Fluttershy best batpony vampire.
>>39453308I'm no expert but I believe it can give relatively detailed contours of the environment, in real-time if the pulses are frequent enough. Probably may also give some information about texture of the stuff around it - e.g. I wouldn't be surprised if wood and metal were distinguishable. Obviously it would give no indication of things like color, which includes any text or markings, and I think there's also some detail resolution limit that I'm guessing will depend on the wavelength of the sound - though I have no idea what the typical resolution will be, you might want to do some research into that. The resultion will probably depend on distance since the sound will propagate outwards (and then back to the ears) in a cone. So for example I doubt they'd be able to read braille in the dark - but maybe I'm wrong; or maybe bats could have devised some kind of alphabet that's specifically made to be as easy to read with sonar as possible (I expect it'd still only be readable at close ranges, unless the markings are in a really large font; again do some research). I expect large differences in depth will be most noticeable - e.g. a tiny insect flying mid-air with nothing behind it will be detectable, whereas that same insect on a flat surface might just blend in. I think. Some material will also absorb sound instead of reflecting. This will probably reduce significantly the detail that can be gleaned about them, and may even make some object invisible beyond a certain range. One could imagine special anti-bat fabrics, crafted - or perhaps even enchanted - to reflect almost no sound or even none at all, thus being entirely invisible to echolocation.Other than that, bats can fly around with echolocation so I'm guessing it should be easy to send pulses often enough to have more or less real-time "vision" around. An interesting thing to note will be that bats will be able to hear each other's pulses. This raises the curious question of whether they might develop some kind of "sonar speech" - that'd probably depend on how far they can modulate their pulses to carry intelligible sounds; but even if not I expect at least some primitive communication, of a similar principle to morse code or something, would definitely get used.
>>39444296>wifing up and having a family with a qt bat
When you have sex outside of marriage the result is always a bat pony. Bat ponies by law cannot get married, meaning they will always produce more bats.
>>39453308There is a semi-common theory out there that bats probably "see color" when they echolocate. The theory is, if you're relying on echolocation so much that it is more-or-less replacing sight, well the brain probably WILL invent some subjective experience that helps tell objects apart. That's why we see color, color isn't really real it's just superimposed by the brain for the sake of distinguishing between different objects. Bat echolocation lets them navigate so precisely that it's almost a bit suspicious, unless they can in fact "see color" through soundIt PROBABLY is true but also PROBABLY isn't actually color that they sense persay.—bats do have perfectly fine vision which includes color, so if it was ACTUALLY color they detect with sound ON TOP OF their normal color vision it would just be confusing for them. No, it would be a sensation LIKE color that humans have difficulty wrapping their head around. You can imagine there might be different "colors" for when their ears detect something rough texture vs smooth texture, something fast-moving vs stationary, low pitch vs high pitch, small object vs big object. Bats almost certainly have some internal subjective way of telling these different things apart through subjective "color" but it's one of those things that's difficult to test.
>>39453356Based Flutterbat enjoyer.
>>39453975>I didnt echolocate just to see ziggers
>>39453384>thus being entirely invisible to echolocation. Not invisible. They'd produce "holes" of no response, especially while moving. Same as normal photonic sight, you want something that either lets the soundwaves pass through or replicates them as unchanged as possible for it to be invisibility.
>>39453626what that's a terrible headcanonwhy can they not get married, I want a bat wife

>>39454597do not eat your batwife
>>39454603relax vorenigger, I mean loyal sex for procreation, no degeneracy
>>39454568Right, I was thinking in like an open space. It'll definitely look like a hole, so not a good way to disguise it among many other objects, but a great way to, say, make a bat fly into a trap or an obstacle while flying around outside. The difference with sight is that echolocation will by necessity have limited range - if you're not getting an echo return, that doesn't mean there's a hole in reality or something asborbing the sound, most of the time it means it's just an open space. In comparison, visually you always expect to see something, whether it be just background light, or in fog, etc.Maybe the closest visual parallel would be in a totally pitch black environment, where you're trying to shine a light around you to see. Everything around you would be pitch black, and, if you're in an open field or something, assuming you don't have some kind of ultra-powerful projector but rather just a normal hand-held battery-powered torch, in most directions you'd see black - unless there's stuff around to actually see. But a super-black object like your pic related would be very very hard to spot. It'd be possible, but honestly because pitch black doesn't exist IRL it'd probably be possible to spot with eyesight anyway, so it'd be predicated on the bat not super-meticulously scanning everything around anyway. It'd just be a way to make the object as unnoticeable to the bat as to anypony else, taking away its echolocation advantage essentially. For something like a trap, it might even be particularly effective since the bat would be overconfident, whereas anypony else would be moving along much more carefully and might spot it.>>39453975That's a fascinating hypothesis in fact, and yeah, it'd make perfect sense for different sonar textures to appear as a kind of color-like sense to them.

>>39488373Off the top of my head, if you don't mind Starscribe then Fine Print is excellent though it's about a bat stallion. Forbidden Places, set in the same universe, has a really cute bat mare - though there's four MCs so a bit less focus on the bat.Journey with a Batpony (and the couple of short stories that come before that, just read them chronologically) has lots and lots of bats and a lot of excellent worldbuilding. But the MC is also a bat stallion - who is shipped with Twilight, which some people are allergic to, but if you can get past the canon x OC ship then it's a quite worthwhile story.I'll post more later if I go through and remember some more good bat stories.

>>39453975>color isn't really real it's just superimposed by the brain for the sake of distinguishing between different objectsWhat do you mean by this anon? Color is the physical frequency/wavelength of the light you're picking up: it's caused by the physical emission properties of the objects you're looking at and carries real data about their surfaces that is the same for everyone even they interpret it separately. Your brain can make up color data, but the color data being delivered by your retinas is entirely a physical property of the light you're perceiving.
>>39579418Wait a second, is this bat lying on the top of a cake?
>>39578798Blood containing Iron neutralizes all magic (muh iron is mundane), so she can't mindrape you to eternally love her.Cue desperate batpone trying to do it realizing anon is immune, then developing a real interest then feelings for him.
>>39579016He meant that colours themselves are a facade made by the brain to interpret said physical properties of the light, cause while light info is getting to your brain, you need to "know" how to decode it. There are animals that can SEE in infrared and ultraviolet, their colours are alien and impossible for us.Kinda like if there were an alien that coincidentally also saw in our visible light spectrum, but they see as blue what we'd see red. You're both receiving the same data from the light, but you're interpreting it mutually exclusive ways. It's this that leads people to (correctly) claim that colour is not real. It's not a fundamental property, it's interpretation.>but the light info! Can you tell the colour difference, visually, between high and low UV light? How about gamma rays and microwaves?
>>39579975>It's not a fundamental property, it's interpretation. It's interpretation of a fundamental property. By the same argument, you could say temperature isn't real because the sensation of heat or cold are just your nerves being stimulated to send information to your brain which your brain interprets. Without that specific interpretation of the stimulus your brain has no concept of heat, you can't observe the flow of energy otherwise.Similarly, you happen to have the ability to perceive the stimulus of slight differences in a very narrow band of the EM spectrum. Downplaying that perception as somehow faker than any other experience you can have is just pseudointellectualism.
>>39579975>There are animals that can SEE in infrared and ultraviolet, their colours are alien and impossible for us.If you're missing the eye lens or have improperly made artificial one, you'll be able to see in ultraviolet (it's pale violet), though not for long as it destroys retina rapidly. And it's possible to see in infrared, it's light pink.>Kinda like if there were an alien that coincidentally also saw in our visible light spectrum, but they see as blue what we'd see red. That's just called being colorblind. If the alien didn't have chromatic deficiency and could distinguish between all wavelengths in human-visible spectrum, he'd still see red as red and blue as blue; or rather, it will be COMPLETELY irrelevant how his brain subjectively interprets the colors because he'll pass all colorblindness tests.By the way, what (You) see is just as subjective. There is no way to verify that you actually perceive red as red as opposed to any other color, all we can do is check that you can actually distinguish it from other colors (=your retina is excited in an unique way by this wavelength or their range or combination).
>>39580431In other words I should abduct you and the anon you're talking to and swap your eyes to see if your brains begin to process colours differently or if the colour processing is something done in the optic fiber or brain itself.
>>39580448Besides swapping eyes being impossible with modern tech, we already know that SOME processing is in fact done in the retina and the neural bundle, but the bulk of it still happens in the brain. This is what your retina actually perceives.>and swap your eyes to see if your brains begin to process colours differentlyWon't. Humans (again, barring chromatic aberrations like colorblindness - where receptors are missing or have non-unique excitation patterns, or tetrachromacy - where they have an additional set and thus can distinguish more unique excitation combos) all have the same kinds of cells in the retina. Seeing them differently can only happen if you fuck up and miswire the cells (i.e. connect nerves used for reading red-green spectrum to blue-yellow or dark-bright By the way, this is why bluish yellow and reddish green are impossible. An alien that directly sees wavelengths as opposed to sets of gradients between two static colors will be able to see those two. receptors, or vice versa).
>>39580161Different anon, but I think the point here is that "color" is a concept entirely divorced from the wavelength of light. We measure temperature in degrees, which are direct physical quantities. But we "measure" color in shades that have a complex and indirect relationship to actual wavelengths; and we even have colors for which no wavelength exists, just because it's something our brain interprets that way (cf. purple). We also have colors which are actually a mix of different wavelengths, etc. Yes, of course, colors arise FROM the differences in electromagnetic waves, but the actual phenomenon of color is quite detached from the raw physical wavelength/frequency, and tightly coupled to our optical perception more than anything.Consider the fact, for example, that we have extremely detailed names for a very narrow band of the EM spectrum, and then just a half-dozen rough classifications for the entire rest of the spectrum. Meanwhile, for temperature, the entire possible range from 0K to infinity is referred to with equally-sized degrees, with no special consideration to the region around room temperature - because the degrees are a direct measure of an actual physical quantity, not some convoluted indirect perception. The concept of "color" is as if instead of measuring physical temperature, we referred to it based on the subjective sensation on touch. But we don't. The same bucket of water might feel really warm or really chilly depending on what temperature you previously experienced, but it'll still be considered the exact same degree in any temperature unit, which everyone can agree on objectively.>>39580431>By the way, what (You) see is just as subjective. There is no way to verify that you actually perceive red as red as opposed to any other color, all we can do is check that you can actually distinguish it from other colors (=your retina is excited in an unique way by this wavelength or their range or combination).Which I think is rather the point. There's no objective definition of color that's common to everyone. It's a subjective, non-physical, purely mental phenomenon. So to go back to the original question 0 >>39579016, >>39453975 - since color is just a mental construct, there's nothing stopping a different species from experiencing, say, sonar texture as color, rather than EM wavelengths. Or both, and having some sort of three-dimensional "color sphere" that is perceived based on both sonar return and the EM wavelength. That is, ultimately, the point. Not that color is somehow non-existent, rather that it's not a physical phenomenon, just a mental one. For us it's got an indirect relationship with the electromagnetic wavelength hitting our retinas, but there's no reason it couldn't be percieved based on other stimuli.
>>39580525>Consider the fact, for example, that we have extremely detailed names for a very narrow band of the EM spectrum, and then just a half-dozen rough classifications for the entire rest of the spectrum. Meanwhile, for temperature, the entire possible range from 0K to infinity is referred to with equally-sized degrees, with no special consideration to the region around room temperature - because the degrees are a direct measure of an actual physical quantity, not some convoluted indirect perception.False equivalence. We not only have special consideration for the region around body temperature (it's called Fahrenheit) as well as a separate consideration for the temperatures between 400 and 1300 Celsius due to them being intimately intertwined with our technological progress it's the range of visible blackbody radiation of forging-temperature steel, the direct equivalent to temperature reading is wavelength, which is mapped for the whole photonic spectrum up to Planck temperature.>but there's no reason it couldn't be percieved based on other stimuliBesides me not arguing that point because it's fine for fantasy, consider that you can actually, physically "see" infrared. With your skin. Can you distinguish between different colors of infrared? You can't. Colors require combining multiple perception ranges or values, otherwise you just see monochromatic intensity of one value. Also, since there's no way to physically distinguish between an echo and regular noises (they both trigger the same perception mechanism - vibration of the eardrum plus delay before the sound reaches the other ear), bats perceiving color of textures would also perceive color of speech. They'd basically have synesthesia, with all the things that implies.
>>39580578>We not only have special consideration for the region around body temperature (it's called Fahrenheit)Farenheit still covers the entire range from 0K to infinity with equal granularity>as well as a separate consideration for the temperatures between 400 and 1300 CelsiusWhat do you mean by "special consideration"? In metallurgy? Certainly some professions will treat certain values specially, but this is the case for pretty much any specialised occupation ever. The Celsius scale is still universal.>the direct equivalent to temperature reading is wavelength, which is mapped for the whole photonic spectrum up to Planck temperature. And that is my point exactly! And wavelength is not color. Wavelength is the objective physical scale, color is a mental construct to make sense of the perception, with only an indirect relationship to wavelength.>you can actually, physically "see" infrared.>With your skin.>Can you distinguish between different colors of infrared? That's a fair point, but I think it only supports more the idea that color != EM wavelength, because we perceive a narrow range of wavelengths as color but then we perceive others as, say, just temperature.>Also, since there's no way to physically distinguish between an echo and regular noises (they both trigger the same perception mechanism - vibration of the eardrum plus delay before the sound reaches the other ear), bats perceiving color of textures would also perceive color of speech. They'd basically have synesthesia, with all the things that implies. That's an interesting point, but I disagree. I think it's entirely possible to percieve the same physical stimuli differently depending on context. The best example I can think of is how we can visually peceive lighting color vs. object color, given sufficient context. Of course this is failible, but when it works, it works naturally without needing to put in any thought. Or on a similar key, distinguishing shade vs. darker colors on a drawing: it also "just works" even though the exact same RGB values might be printed on the paper (or screen). Yeah it's failible - optical illusions to that effect exist - but most of the time it works just fine. Our eyes perceive the exact same wavelength, but as part of reconstructing the image, the brain perceives one part as "this is light color X, with shadow cast on it" and another as "this is color Y, brightly lit".I could imagine a bat, specifically adapted for this, could then perceive texture echoes in some innate way that lets it visualise the object's feel, while also hearing speech as just speech.

>>39580625What about snakes that can sense infrared though? Are they not able to tell apart different temperatures except through brightness? I suppose that makes sense. They might not interpret it visually anyway
>>39581060I don't know if anyone can honestly answer that. In theory I don't think there's anything stopping a different "cone" type cell, sensitive to infrared, from essentially providing an expanded color range. Or you could have multiple sensors sensitive to different ranges of infrared, and that would provide you with a range of sub-colors within the infrared region (exactly like how we divide the visible spectrum into different colors, as opposed to just "brightness of visible light").I assume that they probably only have one sensor and therefore can only get brightness. And I don't know if anybody has ever studied how they perceive or interpret it, or if it can even be ever known.
Anyone making a new bread?
Finally the bats have been stopped.

Well, it was a fun thread. See you, bats.
