Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony content, be it art, music, games, or something completely different, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating

Are you an experienced artist/musician/gamedev/etc? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

Guides, tutorials and resources! Start here!

Happy Anniversary /bale/ bros! we've come a long way since last year, and I'm so proud of you guys for all the great progress and awesome art we've seen come from this thread

reply to this post with some of your favorite art or moments that you've saved or seen in /bale/, tonight at 8pm EST we're going to celebrate /bale/ with a little livestream (at https://cytu be/r/BaleShack) and go over all of my favorites, along with whatever responses this message gets

/bale/ shack upcoming stream schedule:
>Tuesday November 15 8pm EST
/bale/ one year retrospective!
/bale/ turns a year old on Saturday, so for this special stream we'll be looking back over the past year at some of our favorite art (and artists) that have come out of the thread
>Thursday November 17 8pm EST
learn to make bleached shirts! cool minimalist shirts with pony designs on them
more info and possibly a more detailed material list coming soon, but I'd recommend picking up:
-a plain black cotton t-shirt
-a simple print of the minimalist design you want on the shirt (a cutie mark printed large on a piece of paper, for example)
-a pen/pencil/marker, whichever you prefer (I prefer pen for this)
-wax paper
-xacto knife
-scotch tape
-spray adhesive
-bleach
-spray bottle
-paper towels
-bowl of cold/cool water
>Tuesday November 22 8pm EST
sew a tiny pony plush!
we'll be following the guide at https://plush.smol.horse
see the link for the materials you'll need

the following Thursday is Thanksgiving, so there won't be a stream then
after that, more streams TBA
see you guys there!

And thus it begins again!

Messed around with a weird sideways brush and ended up with a few tiny things

I apologize if the following doesn't make sense. It's around 3 am, but my body refuses to get rest.

Wow, can't believe that it's been around 4-ish months. I remember coming in to bale scared shitless due to the awesome art that was posted. I remember I was still navigating the confusing phase of "Now what? Where do I start?" in my art career. I was trying to learn how to improve but, let face it, navigating the art pathway can get discouraging at times. Specially if you are walking the path alone. So imagine my surprise when I decided to waddle in to /mlp/ to see whats up, and stumble across a peculiar thread titled "Beginner And Low Effort arts & projects". As stated before, I was nervous to start contributing since, all of the art that was posted are art that I would consider good. "What the hell am I thinking, participating in a thread where art is this good." I foolishly told myself. It wasn't until I practice the initial beginner exercises and drew my first mare (Artie) that I had the courage to post my art and receive criticism. And let me tell you, the second I did get a (you), it was like an addiction.

Before /bale/, I was trying to figure out everything on my own. The problem with this approach is that; you have no way to get proper feedback. I was a mess and I had few people that I could go to for art related stuff. But, thanks to /bale/ and all the wonderful chad anons that draw, compose, and write in this thread; I don't feel that I have to walk the art path alone. I am glad that I am walking the art path with my fellow degenerates and horse fuckers. Whit out you, this shit wouldn't be nearly as fun.

I would also like to thank, THE guy. Seriously, thank you. I believe /bale/ wouldn't be the same without you going on the extra mile to set up the workshops and streams. Thank you and all the special guest/artist that have come to spread their knowledge. And thank you, to all the amazing anons of /bale/!

Thank (you) and happy birthday /bale/. May you keep on helping beginning artists to succeed in a path that, often times, is hard to walk by alone.

Hi /bale/
how do I use references correctly? With a reference I feel like I focus on copying too much. The bigger composition gets lost, while I try to replicate every curve accurately. The end result is okay, but I'm not feeling like I accomplished much.
But without a reference I'm totally lost on what to do.
How do I get out of this phase?
>>
>>39307267
don't recreate. look at what they do, then apply it to yours. you have to start by blocking out what you want to do first, the pose, props, backgrounds etc. then, with references to help guide you, you fill it all in

Thanks for your guidance, (You) guy.
Just for you, I've removed Panzer's armor for maximum mare appreciation.

Yes, Panzer is her name. Panzer Faust (no relation to Lauren). She's the muscle of a freelance mercenary team that tracks down and beats up bad guys for money. She has a Germane accent and is most decidedly NOT the dumb muscle of the team. In fact, her keen intuition is often necessary to get her team out of sticky situations caused by her headstrong teammates and their 'shoot first, ask questions never' policy. She's a proud mechanic who built her armor herself out of scrap machinery, and she loves chocolate, action movies, and boating.

She's also a big girl, roughly Big Mac's size and build. Her fellow bounty hunters call her 'the tank' for a reason.

I bet Redheart is into that.

I was (and still am) hung up on hind legs too, but I think it's not something you'd get called out on getting wrong (unless it bends the knee like a human leg).
If you want to get better, look at real horses and other legs like that such as dogs.
>>
>>39310845
Thank you. Hopefully I can get some use out of this.
I think I understand the anatomy of the legs decently, and I do the fore legs okay. It's just those hind legs the throw me off.
I'd never forgive myself if I did the human knee bend, though.

Anyway, I went ahead and threw all(most) of the Fae greens on ponepaste for ease of access.
Not sure if I'll do that for the rest of the greens I've posted in /bale/, still on the fence, but for Fae, it made sense.
These are as is, though I might go ahead one day and try to correct any errors that they had at the time.

4chan strips the metadata from images (so people don't dox themselves) and it makes a lot of pics from cell phones end up sideways or upside-down.

>>39312731
It's good to try something different! The pose is nice, only the back legs look a bit weird. I think they should connect smoother to the body and the hock be thicker and a bit higher (or in case of this image lower).
>>39313347
The legs should go down from the shoulders to the elbows and then come up.
>>39314054
The body should be thinner and the front legs are definitely off. The hoof itself is alright, but ponies can't put them to their sides like this. The head is good. You could take into account the gravity when drawing the mane; try to imagine how would it fall and deform itself.
>>39314412

I don't take any chances, and remove all metadata before I upload images. All it takes is one april fools event to ruin me.

I'm going to be totally honest, while I did intentionally put effort into the proportions, the perspective was totally accidental. I was fighting to make the hooves look good for over 20 minutes and didn't realize my guidelines were perspective until I was almost done.

Two questions: What’s a hock? What exactly did you mean when you said the aft legs should connect better?
>The legs should go down from the shoulders to the elbows and then come up.
I think I got it. Thanks for clarifying.

Looks cute.
I'm a beginner just like you, so grain of salt for the next bit. It seems like you are drawing pretty small and probably with your wrist. Wobbly lines and all. You might benefit from looking into how to draw with your shoulder and making your ponies bigger on paper.
https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/2 has some free tutorials on how to do that and a few excercises to practice.
>>
>>39315001
Thanks.
>>39315929
>It seems like you are drawing pretty small and probably with your wrist.
Yeah, that’s correct.
>You might benefit from looking into how to draw with your shoulder and making your ponies bigger on paper.
I read through the article and tried it out, everything just came out messy and wobbly; it felt like I had very little control of what I was doing. The only positive was that it was easier for me to control the pressure I put on the pencil. I don’t using the whole arm is for me. I guess I could try drawing bigger in the from now on.
>>
>>39316011
Of course it's hard the first times. You have so much more experience with your wrist because writing is done like that.
But only doing wrist because it's easier now could hold you back forever. Power through the speed bump, do some of the excercises they list and you'll be better for it in the long run. At least I believe so.
It's hard to control the lines at first. Overshooting and not hitting the destination is normal. But you should already notice that the lines are less wobbly and you can make them longer, which you can't with your wrist.
But up to you.

>”So… What’s the verdict?”
“It’s peat moss.”
>Your glasses clad client pouts.
>”Dangit, I thought I had something there…”
“Don’t be too hard on yourself, peat moss is quite the deceiver, as it comes in many colors and forms… That being said, if you dry it out, it makes for good kindling.”
>”And for gardening too, right?”
>You nod in affirmation.
>The blue maned mare sighs, and puts the moss back in her satchel.
>”Thanks for at least giving it a shot, Knoll.”
“Sorry I had to disappoint, if you want, I could give you some foraging tips, it’s wouldn’t be that much of a bo-”
>”Mossbee!”
“Bwuh!”
>You jump, not expecting the sudden tug on your tail.
>You turn swiftly towards your niece, Atoll, who is staring up at you with a devilish smile.
“Please refrain from doing that, alright?”
“...”
“Whaddya want?”
>”I’m hungry.”
“There's cereal in the kitchen, I’ll make something later, I’ve got customers.”
>The filly salutes with a grin and trots out of sight.
>She’s going to clear out your cupboard again, isn’t she?
>Oh well… At least your sister is paying you for foalsitting.
“Ahem… where were we?”
>You turn back to your client, who seems perplexed.
>”She’s like… a mini you.”
>Very observant, this one.
”She’s not mine, despite the resemblance.”
>You swear, your family is like a photocopier…
“Anyway, did you want some tips or uh… Ugh! I lost my train of thought…”
>Maybe you need a nap, or something, you're barely able to keep yourself awake...
>The mare shakes her head.
>”Thanks, but I think I’ll leave it to the professionals!”
>She adjusts her glasses for a moment.
>”Do you still have any of those jars of moss balls?”
>You’d argue that they are technically algae, but at this point, you just want to finish this up so you can go lie down.
>You gesture a hoof towards the jars on a low hanging shelf.
”I still have a few left… Do you want one?”
>”I wouldn’t be against it…”
“Straight answers only… please?”
>”Yes!”
>You take down a jar and present it to the mare. After she inspects it she nods and rummages through her satchel for some bits.
>She produces a bundle of mossy bits, because apparently she’s keeping them loose with all that peat moss.
>...Why?
>Whatever! Bits are bits.
>You take the bits and after brushing them off, you set them in your dusty register.
>When was the last time you had somepony waltz in wanting to buy something?
>You honestly can’t remember.
>The mare hums to herself as she walks out the door, leaving you once more with your plants and your niece.
>You let out a sigh, and change the ‘Open’ sign to ‘Closed’.
>Time for a nap!
>Your ears perk at the sound of something crashing to the ground, followed by a hushed ‘Oops’.
>Or maybe not…
>It’s gonna be a long night, eh Mossy?

Been wanting to get a visual for Mossy's shop. This is too flat, I think next time I'll make things more 3d, it kinda needs the extra dimension. Messed up the colors a bit, Mossy's eye came out more yellow than orange, so did the rest of the orange in the picture, I'll have to watch out for that. Hope this has some semblance of a personality with the background. I always thought of Mossy being more or less down on her luck when it comes to business. Also, woah! A stallion! This is like the second time I've drawn a stallion on purpose, it's just a picture, but it sorta counts.

Drew this earlier today, before that stuff with the entire arm. The goal was to make it look like she’s about to do a lunging jump. Originally, I wanted to have the wings low to the ground, decided against it because I wanted the body to be visible (and I could’t figure out how to draw them). This was my first attempt without a reference. Unfortunately, it just looks like she’s angrily walking forward.
>>
>>39316553
Second attempt, I drew the line before the limbs. The result was tiny, foal-looking version. As for the pose, I used a picture of cat about to pounce as reference.
>>
>>39316553
I switch from my wrist to shoulder to elbow without thinking about it, depending on what I need to do. From that lined paper spacing, it looks like that's a rather small pony. For me, elbow and shoulder movements work better on large shapes or when you're working on large canvases. Of course everyone is different and they do their own thing.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VGLBrrKKnNnv8xZialPyaLMzImmC8pH_/view
Also I'd recommend starting with some construction sketches instead of using heavy pressure like that. Light sketches are easier to erase and you can just make the final lines thicker so they're more difficult to see.

Oh boy 3 a.m.!
Can't sleep, so here's a shitty attempt at mare-ifying a dumb thing I saw.
She probably should be farther away (smaller?) but I felt like I couldn't do any detail at the smallness, so she's just sorta... not far. I probably could have resized this to be bigger, but then it would be fuzzy, so I guess it is what it is.
Also another attempt at some markings, hope it isn't too much.

Compared to human anatomy, horses have very long feet and walk on the tips of their toes. Hock is their ankle, that weird bit at the back of their hind legs.
I was thinking about something like pic related, so the leg line is closer to the belly line and doesn't connect at an angle.

Aside from the obvious suggestion of finding a reference of a snake bending to see how they look, it'd be good to look into the anatomy of snakes' scales.
The scales aren't hard plates fully affixed to the skin (though some snakes do have something like that around the head, called scutes). The more forward scales (closer to the head) physically overlap the scales behind them. When the snake bends its body, the scales inside the bend compress and overlap more, while the scales outside the bend separate and expose more of their surface.
Also, scales at different locations around the body will have different shapes. The scales on the belly often look dramatically different than those on the back.

They are pronounced like "Scoots," which makes them even more cute.
Also, there's a good chance that at least part of the stuff between a Kirin's eyes is made of scutes rather than scales. Right on the nose would probably be scales as a result of natural selection favoring the boopability of a snoot.
>>
>>39316862
Imo this isn't that bad of an attempt. The proportions on the legs are pretty accurate and I can see that you tried to think of them as 3D by the way you constructed them. I personally prefer to separate the joints using spheres connected with cylinders, so they're more free to bend and flown more naturally. Keep at it, and keep using references! You're on the right track.

That is a marked improvement already. The shape of the scales and their orientation is much better. You're doing great.

There are a couple of refinements you can make to give it more depth and make it seem more 3D.
Notice the belly of the snake I posted. Do you see how it's not just a lighter color, but the shape of the scales are very different? Rather than being the diamond-esque shape of the other scales, they are long and thin, crossing the whole belly. You can use that to show just how the body is curling around.
Also, a body like that is a big tube. The scales on the edges are going to be distorted by the fact that they are going around a curve. If you need help visualizing it, you can take something like a paper towel tube and draw the scales on it. Then, looking at it, you can see exactly how the scales would visually change shape due to being on the edge of the snake's body.
Thinking about a body as a 3D object and trying to make sense of them in 2D is a heck of a challenge. Don't worry if you don't get it right away. It's all about that practice.

I won’t lie, I was to oppose to it at first. I hated how hard it was to get precise shapes and lines. My curiosity pushed through so I kept trying until I got something presentable.

Refs from the show are great for trying to be close to its cute style and general toony pony anatomy, and real ponies/horses are great inspos for coat patterns and body markings, colors, breeds, irl anatomy 'n' such
irl horses also make for great redraws with the silly ponies heehoo
>>
>>39320394
Your art's good anon, from a technical standpoint I can't really critique all that much. You seem to be doing good construction and seem capable of replicating other styles.
I do have a little feedback on some more stylewise points, though obviously those are more subjective so take them as you will. I'd personally caution against the overly rounded ears, make them too round and they start looking like teddy bear ears. I also think potentially the eyes could serve to be 20-40% bigger, and I'd suggest experimenting with toning down the cheek bulge, but again all of this is subjective and I don't want to steer you too much here. Worth experimenting and trying new things regardless.
Keep up the good work!

styluses for phones are just janky in general unless its something like a galaxy 22 ultra or similar. the tips are usually huge and make it hard to be accurate

By happenstance, I am on a Galaxy S22, but this is a third party stylus and has a pretty fine tip. I specifically looked for a fine tip because I had a fat tipped one before I started drawing and it sucked even for general use.
My issue is less the tip and more my lines being extra wobbly.

Been messing around with what Fae and Ari's parents looked like, I've had Lucent named for awhile now, but only recently got Azure named.
Instead of yammering on about them, I'll probably try to make something that establishes their personalities.
Maybe a pic and a story for both? It'll probably take a bit, but I like the sound of that.
Also this is sorta an attempt at a full body stallion, although I'm unsure how much of a difference in physique I need.

Finally have a little break from all the school shit. Got to work on the game again. Modified some scripts so the party has more characters. I'm kinda ditching the first idea as well and working on a different thing now using the skeleton of the previous project. I like better this new direction to be honest. I thought the last idea was far too cringe. Also, multi hit skills now have a series of timed button press events to increase interactivity a bit. This applies both for your party and your enemies. This also adds the possibility to parry at different hits of an enemy combo, and most likely will add the chance to abruptly end an enemy combo from the first hit (not in all cases, though)
Will start to design the new protagonists soon.

Actively drawing for 1-2 hours a day is pretty damn solid for a beginner. I wouldn't worry about the fatigue too much, take short breaks more frequently, also, you'll notice, the more you practice the more your patience will grow giving you more energy and will to draw.

Regarding your hate, you might be one of those people that simply despise their own works. You're simply going to have to deal with it as an individual.
Keep learning and practicing more drawing techniques and you'll find yourself somewhere. When you do the whole, wonderful world of art will open up to you.
>>
>>39327358
>>39327461
This. You sound tense, Anon. Instead of forcing yourself to draw through that, train yourself to sit down for drawing in a relaxed state. Fix your posture, focus on slow calm breathing, and sit at your desk as if it was a cute mare at dinner, or someone you really love. It sounds like hippy bullshit but people are creatures of habit, and you've unintentionally trained yourself to freak out at a blank piece of paper/canvas. That will never change unless you change it willingly. If you feel real anxious, stand up and try again in a little bit and read artbooks, watch workshops in the meantime. You're not the first or the last content creator to feel like this. I think it hits everyone once, no matter how confident they are at other things so don't think it's hopeless either. You're going to get through this.

Shitposting visually is a good way to break into this habit because you'll naturally worry less about the outcome of a drawing, and slowly teach yourself to enjoy the process in a more natural way.

Drawing with your entire arm is supposed to help you make smooth lines. If you look at tabletop line, it's everything but straight.
You have to familirazie yourself with the technique more. Take a paper, just draw lines on it, as straight as you can using your entire arm.
Do the exercises in the course.

But honestly, just try having fun with it. You get better at drawing by drawing. Don't use your entire arm, if you don't feel like it now. You can always learn later.

"But... you have wings."

"Oh, okay..."
>"So uh, whats all the moping about for?"
"Well I... I... I ran away."
>"From... home?"
"From school..."
>"...Why?"
>Fae covers her face with her forehooves.
"My p-project got all messed up! A-and now everypony h-hates me!"
>"I wouldn't go that far Fae! I'm sure whatever it was, its not that bad!"
"It... it blew up! It was awful! And... and *I'm* awful!"
>"Hold it, just... before you start bawling again, nopony got hurt, right?"
"No..."
>"See? It's not *that* bad! How about I get you back to school? I'm sure their all worried sick! Especially Miss Bumble."
"I... You're right... I'm sorry. I guess I panicked..."
>"You're uh, pretty far out, how'd you manage that?"
"I'm used to the forest, seeing that my house is... somewhere over there."
>Fae points in a direction that Daze can't see, since she's still stuck.
"Hey Dazey? Why aren't you in school?"
>"I'm studying entomology! Like um, field studying!"
>Daze wiggles a bit, trying to free herself from her foliage prison.
>"I was looking at some neat bugs when I heard you having a meltdown!"
>Fae flushes.
"I-i wasn't having a meltdown..."
>"I mean... you were crying pretty hard."
"P-please don't tell anyone! Everypony thinks I'm a c-crybaby as it is..."
>"Pff, I ain't like that!"
>Daze attempt once more to free herself, but to no avail.
>"Can you uh, give me a hoof?"
>Fae nods and grabs Daze's forehooves.
>"Alright, you pull, And I... I guess I just keep wiggling?"
>With their combined effort, they end up dislodging Daze.
>"Phew! Thanks Faint."
"No problem!"
"..."
"Can... Can I just study bugs with you? I don't think I can make myself go back..."
>"You're better off back at school, besides, I'm studying... uh... spiders."
"I can handle s-spiders!"
>"Fae..."
"I... Okay."
>"As consolation... I'll tell you all about cicadas on our way!"
"Really?!"
>"Yessiree!"
>Daze starts her way towards the schoolhouse with a excited Fae in tow.
>"Alrighty, so, did you know that some cicadas have wings that repel water and bacteria? Of course most cicadas can't do that, but these ones can! And you wanna know *how* they do all that repelling? Well, ya see..."
>>
>>39330807
It is an ungody hour and I did this instead of sleeping, anyway, I wanted to try something other than a 4 panel comic, so here's this. It's nice to acknowledge Daze's existence, I should draw her more. I guess Daze in this is probably a year or so older than Fae. Speaking of Fae, I did her mane different once more, not surprising, really. Used a brush different from usual since I wanted to see how it'd look. It's neat. I probably could say more, but I legitimately can't think of anything.
>>
>>39330807
Does the comic match the story? In the comic Daze doesn't seem to fall.

What's the preferred way to do eyes? Like the catchlights, do you apply a blending mode and feather the edges? Or do you just leave it as a solid white graphic? What about shading and highlights?

Hello!

Thanks to secret santa event i recently started to doodle ponies. I really enjoyed a process, so i plan to do that often, so i guess i should visit here to have my regular portion of "ur doodle is shit go kill urself :3"

Right now i just use vectors as references.
This is my 6th doodle and i know, it's incredibly fucked up.
I don't really understand what gone wrong, but my best guess is head form. Pls show me my failings.
I tried to make it less circle and more ellipse, but it didn't end well. What form pony heads actually are? Or at least what to start with? Perfect circle, or...?
>>
>>39331614
your artstyle is so cute it's lovely
>>
>>39331805
>"ur doodle is shit go kill urself :3"
dude it looks fine, at least pretend to be confident kek.
keep it up
the best practice for beginner pony heads will be circles, with snoot/ear shapes where applicable.
as far as that doodle, the height of the snoot should be a bit more high i think, in line with the bottom of the other eye at least. the far eye on the top edge should be a bit more rounded to mirror the shape of the closer eye. over all your doing good, dont worry
>>
>>39331644
I just use a white brush over a black oval to make the highlight, nothing special, but I'm sure other anons have more interesting techniques.

I used this as my intro to learning how to draw ponies.
https://imgur.com/a/m7zQ2
It might help you too, just to know what the general steps are.
Pic rel is me following that one guide linked. Let's what you can do!
>>
>>39331644
Catchlights are an add layer; another add layer for subtle colored highlight rings around the catchlights. W/top down lighting: small shadow under eyelashes. Very slight shading on underside of eye (for roundness).
>>
>>39331805
cute
>>
>>39331805
This is quite decent bro. I'd say the chin is a little tall. It would also be helpful to include the reference with your post. You might benefit from making your drawings bigger so you have more control.

>"C'mon, Anon, sing the song!"
>You attempt to stifle a groan to limited success
>This pink bundle of annoyance hasn't given you more than two hours of respite all day
>Not since she caught you singing while making dinner yesterday
"Not happening, Ponk."
>You know attempting to lose the mare in the streets is entirely futile, so you keep walking while she bounces along beside you
>"But you said you didn't sing, and then you were singing, and I didn't know the song, and I know all the songs, well, maybe not all the songs, but I know a whole lot of songs, and that's not one of them, so that means it's probably a human song and I can't learn it anywhere except you, so you've gotta sing it so that I can learn it!"
>During her run-on sentence, you placed your hand on the pony's head to dampen her increasingly energetic bounces
>More to save the nearby awnings than anything
>Consequently, your hand was now wrist-deep in pink mane, a surprisingly pleasant sensation
>Now that her exuberance was expended and her bounces have returned to normal levels, you remove your hand from the fluff
>You are holding a chocolate bar
>You decide it's best not to question this
"I said I didn't sing in public, Pinkie. There's a difference. People don't do that where I'm from unless they're a performer."
>"But ponies do it all the time here, so it's totally okay. See!"
>Pinkie stops bouncing and points at a trio of ponies on the tail end of a musical number
>Something about one of their gardens being ravaged by caterpillars
>You stand, watching as the song concludes, and two of the ponies return to their daily routine while the third returns to salvaging her garden
>You unwrap the chocolate bar
"Yeah, see, I don't have whatever freaky horse juju makes you sing perfectly and lets any passersby join in and know exactly what their parts are."
>You take a bite of the chocolate bar
>"But it's not weird, so you can sing, and nopony will think you're weird."
>It's a good chocolate bar
>You resume walking
>"Pleeease, Anon"
>You don't have to look, you can feel the puppy-dog eyes boring into the back of your head
>You steel your resolve
"I'm sorry, Pinkie, but-"
>You make the mistake of turning to look her in the eyes
"... ugh, okay, fine, but not now. I need time to prepare. My house in three days, 4 o'clock, just you, okay?"
>Instantly, her demeanor changes from dour pleading to raw excitement as she leaps to her hooves and trots up beside you
>Even her colors seem more vibrant, which you didn't think was possible
>"Ohmygosh, thank you, Anon, I'm so excited to learn new songs from a whole other land, and I'm sure I've never heard anything like them before and..."
>>
>>39331856
>You partially tune out the horse's ramblings, giving the most generic responses to her occasional questions
"Mm-hm"
"Yeah"
"It's a surprise"
>Most of your mental energy is spent navigating Ponyville to reach the door of Sugarcube Corner
>You swing the door open
>It's still fairly early in the day, so there's only one pony browsing the displays while Mr. Cake offers suggestions
>He interrupts himself to greet you
>"Good morning, Anon. Anything you need?"
"Mornin', and nope, just got a delivery for you."
>You turn and grasp Pinkie around the middle and heft her up
>You turn back and place her inside the shop
>You close the door on the rambling mare and the bemused stallion
>You resume your errands, still hearing faint traces of Pinkie's voice while contemplating just what in Equestria you've gotten yourself into

The story is a continuation of the comic, the comic more or less being a starting point. I'll be honest, I forgot to draw Daze trying to fly across the river. If I had been patient and did it while not tired, It probably would have been a two parter with Daze's pov at first, then Fae's. A missed opportunity, but it is what it is. Fatigue is a horrid foe. Also, just realized how many spelling errors are in the green, goddammit.

>>39331099
Not yet, but I like her look, so maybe I'll end up drawing her again (Although I did steal her manestyle for bumpmare). Maybe I'd name her something real horsey, like 'Biscuit' or something, seeing that she's sorta 'normal' looking.

Damn, that's actually pretty good! It's very hard to say what is off about it, because it's already pretty on point.
Maybe her head is a little to small for her body. At least I get that impression when I look at the image from further away. And her neck is too thick, making the front part a bit blocky.
But those are just my amateur guesses.

Uh, almost forgot to mention. I love how big you draw on the paper. Most anons here tend to do very very small ponies which cause it's own issues. But you got the confidence to do it big! Well, maybe do it a little smaller so that you comfortably fit the whole pony on that page heh.

Anyone want a /bale/ edition of a soap making workshop thing?
When? On a friday or saturday, lets say 3pm EST - no date set yet. December sometime?
The idea is to make the simplest possible soap with the least amount of things, using things typically found around the house.

Hard Requirements:
A scale of some sort. Kitchen or shipping scale is ideal.
Lye. Pretty easily found at any hardware store or many grocery stores sold as something like "100% lye drain unclogger" or similar. Ex: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Instant-Power-Crystal-Lye-Drain-Cleaner-1650/204374017
Any kind of cooking oil thats laying around.
3 containers made of glass or stainless steel.
1 spoon
water

Recommended:
Silicon spatula
Shipping or Kitchen scale that can measure grams or fractional ounces
Freezer paper
distilled or reverse osmosis filtered water

Do not use:
Anything made of aluminum

So, anyone want to do something like this on a livestream?
What day should I do it on?
>>
>>39338608
While realistically I'm not going to follow through, I'm interested to see how you make them.
So very yes
>>
bump
>>
>>39338608
What would the end result look like? Would the soap be usable or more a gimmicky thing? What can we expect?
>>
>>39339518
it depends on what people have laying around to make into soap. I don't want anyone to go out and buy special oil to make into soap, just use what's around.
As I have said before other places, the oils are used determine what kind of soap it ends up being.
I'll take a stab and guess that most people have at least one of the following in the kitchen: olive oil, canola oil, vegi oil, lard, coconut oil.
Any one of those will make decent soap by its self, but wait times will vary once its cured enough to be a solid. Coconut oil is the shortest wait time, olive oil will be the longest with all other things being equal.

I finally rendered a scene that has been sitting on my computer for almost two years. I was sick of the Donut Tutorial at the time so I followed a low-poly well tutorial instead.

Blender is a god damned blessing for those who aren't drawing inclined. I'm pretty good at drawing, but I just placed .png's into the scene for the sake of time. After all, I was learning how to model a well, not draw.

That looks sick! Very close to the show's style. I thought the toast was her really long tongue at first, though. And my opinion is that her body is just a bit too compact. She could use a bit more midsection.
>>
>>39342532
Pretty and pretty accurate too.
You are good at studying (replicating) existing imagery. It might be time now to take some tiny steps beyond that and try doing some poses of your own and changing the facial expressions around a bit. Use references and guides, but try not to look at them so much while putting your pen to paper. Toast is a good start.

Legs look good. I'm a beginner just like you, so I may be wrong here, but I think the parallel lines indicated should converge at a singular vanishing point.
The way it is right now makes the knee of the further away hind-leg look too high.
Someone more experienced let me know if I'm wrong here.
Not sure where to actually place the horizon line or vanishing point either.

don't worry about it, wobbles aren't anywhere near as important as the overall shape, and it looks like you're doing pretty well on that front
take pic related as an example, alumx's lines are all over the place, and if you wanted to you could be really picky about straightening them out and fixing them up, but instead he just keeps it really loose and focuses more on shapes and proportion, if that makes sense
there's some quote in the tempo resource bin that says something along the lines of "line quality is nowhere near as important as ... something"
I forget what it said but it was something like fundamentals or proportions or whatever, and it had a picture of fluttershy drinking a juice box as one of the examples
anyway, all this to say that I think what you're doing is great, just keep pushing forward! Phones can be kind of tricky to draw on anyway, in my experience. No need to set your standards too high, this is /bale/ after all!

>wobbles aren't anywhere near as important as the overall shape
In this case the wobbles detract from the overall shape. You can't just handwave that away. The shape will always look wrong with lines this wobbly.

>alumx's lines are all over the place
Yes. But this isn't even comparable to Anon's pic. Alumnx lines are smooth, he just didn't care about connecting them cleanly and sometimes they are a bit too curved. But all that gives the pic its own unique charm. However, it's disingenuous to say that Alumnx lines wobble.

>>39356119
Same thing here. The pic with the "unclean" lines does NOT have wobbly lines, just more lines, because the artist was searching for the shape.

In my opinion, you should drop the phone (not literally!) and pick up a pen and paper. Focus on drawing smooth lines with confidence. If the line doesn't go where you want it to right away, that's fine. Try again, like in the fluttershy pic. The phone is holding you back from learning, Anon. The screen is probably too small, so you physically can't draw long lines in one stroke, leading to these wobbly lines. That's not even your fault, it's the fault of the device.

>>
>>39356607
Looks cute, i like it. Its def better with lining. And overall it's good work, nothing big to criticize for me there.

Though if you want to draw more you might want to practice on pony with eyes shown and also pay attention to perspective in future.
>>
>>39356521
I could add more, smaller, cleaner lines that match the true shape I'm looking for, like in the Fluttershy, but I didn't feel the need because the gist of the shape is there and it's not the finished piece, just the rough base for everything else. I'm still working on it.
And I do use pencil and paper when I'm not at work, but that environment isn't good for physical media. I still want to draw mares there, so, phone is the only option.

>>39358196
Oh, you flatter me, i just do it for 2 weeks now almost every day though. This >>39349794 anon is incredibly right, i tried to start drawing many times, but it always ended with tantrum and huge demotivation until now. I wouldnt do it for now if i didnt enjoy the process attention to my doodles helps as well and i do enjoy it. It exhausts me, but im so happy when pony becomes whole, when i find that line that fits, when i see what ive done.
Try to just copy some existing vector (i did it) and see if you like it. And also, in my opinion, starting with traditional pencil art is easier, because it has lower entry threshold. Drawing soft is too complicated for an unprepared user and even if you have tablet, it takes some time to get used to it.
>>
>>39358399
I try to do something drawing related everyday just to keep the habit going like you. Be careful not to burn yourself out though. Find your Zen, enjoy the process of drawing, let go of the outcome. Don't become dependent on other people for motivation and you'll be golden.
maybe I'm just projecting. In that case thanks for being my therapy doll. ^:)

its not bad. id argue maybe some catch lights on it, or maybe color variations would help give it a bit more oomph.

ive worked entirely in flat colors so far so im kind of just worried abt anatomy rn

Anatomy wise, I think it flares out a bit too quick from the medial ring. Maybe if it stayed straighter before flaring.

A more complete version of this WIP from yesterday. I need to add the Cutie Mark and want to give it a few finishing touches, but it's late and I need sleep.
Any suggestions on anything I need to improve? This is the first thing I've made digitally and really put extra time and effort into.
>>
It's simple and silly, but I'm proud of it. Probably one of the cutest Ly's I've drawn

Thanks Anons, the encouragement means a lot. I'm still trying to build up the confidence to post art publically more
>>
>>39360552
I think posting in draw threads like this is okay even for a complete beginner, its purpose of these threads to give advices and motivation after all.
>>
>>39360552
/bale/ is for beginner art after all, no need to worry about delivering some superb work of art, I'm sure everyone here is glad there are new people wanting to create content. So please do post your stuff no pressure whatsoever.

Turned out great and not wobbly at all. Big respect!

Well, i wanted to make a request, but this one didn't end well. Didn't understand the stallions nose-chin, so failed in the begining.
I will re-do it during one of nearest days.

I mentioned earlier that i don't want to upset him with bad drawing and i'm incredibly glad i feel no shame about it. He loved the drawing!

I've made the switch to digital now after finally configuring my drawing tablet correctly. involved downloading old drivers from some rando on reddit
Digital is neat, but it also feels a little like cheating with those infinite undos.

Wanted to get better at faces. Fucked up right at the start by not making her look upwards, but downwards. Lot's of other issues and I think I will just have to try it again tomorrow. I do love how her hair flows in the breeze. Hair is fun to draw as it's just curves and it doesn't need to be very accurate.

Welp, I tried a bunch of little things to improve the image but I didn't like any of it, so I slapped her Cutie Mark on and I'm calling it complete.
I already have an idea for the next piece. That said, it's just the pose I want to do. One of you tell me what horse it should be.

Unashamed I vote for Roseluck, because she is a cutie!

Cuty mark turned out well! The only thing that puzzles me, is what her wing is doing. Looks like it's raised, but also closed.
>>
>>39362989
Yeah, I had a hard time with the wings. Her being Celestia wasn't actually decided until after I sketched the shape and I'm already not great at wings, so trying to fit them in was not a good time.
I tried unfurled first, but it always looked extra janky. I eventually decided that I wasn't practicing wings and just did something basic. I know it's not the best positioning, but I didn't want to spend several days fussing over them.

Also, Roseluck confirmed.
>>
>>39362897
>it also feels a little like cheating with those infinite undos.
You could just never press undo. And don't think of it like cheating, you have people getting good in only a few years with digital compared to the past where you not only had to draw a lot, you had to blow thousands of dollars on tools and paint only to fuck up and have to keep spending to improve. And that applied to anything back then, taking pictures with film, paying an orchestra to play the music you wrote, recording audio directly into a vinyl record, etc. All that was expensive. All you need now is a computer.
>>
>>39362897
>Feels like cheating
no rules.
no tools.
only dedication to mare. do what works for you then you can streamline as you learn and grow. its all iterative, soon youll be doodling good stuff and not even need to undo

Okay, okay. I'm not that hardcore. Heh. I already had my finger stuck to the undo button for the sketch. Also, yeah we are pretty lucky to have all these modern tools. I just worry (justified or not) that I learn to rely on shortcuts too much and stop progressing. (probably not a concern yet)

>>39363519
Can't wait for that day.

If you want to get better, step one would be to use blank paper, those lines just get in the way.
Then I'd ask how you construct the bodies? Two circle method?
>>
>>39366260

>step one would be to use blank paper, those lines just get in the way.
Lines do help a little for proportions, but I get what you mean.

>Then I'd ask how you construct the bodies? Two circle method?

Blind luck at the moment. Just trying to envision what proportions I would use.
>>
>>39366281
>Lines do help a little for proportions
They are a crutch and are holding you back. Drop em! Don't be afraid to screw up. Practicing with lines will never be as effective as practicing without.

>Blind luck at the moment
I refer you to this. The guide shows you how to do it with two circles.

Well, this was challenging.
I felt guilty because >>39361892 this was my first request and i failed it, so i drew a full picture.
It had lots of stuff i never tried, i fucked up perspective badly in some places, but i think i like how it came out after all.
I'll sure do much more full-size pony pics.
