Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony content, be it art, music, games, or something completely different, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in it, which makes it good by default)

Make something, share what you've done, and give feedback and motivation to help us all keep improving and creating

Are you an experienced artist/musician/gamedev/etc? Leave some tips, feedback, guides, or tutorials, they're well appreciated here!

>You open the door and walk into the tower.
>The bottom level was always so cozy, though you usually stayed in your room.
>You put your scarf on a hanger by the door and set your new spellbook on the table.
>You wonder where Ari is?
>...
>Oh!
>You notice behind a crate of orange tinted potions on the table, is Ari, who seems to have dozed off.
>You walk up to your sister and lightly nudge her side, which gets her to groan in response.
>She lifts her head up and looks at you, her eyes have dark circles under them.
>”Oh… Hi Rune-e….”
“Rune-e…?”
>Ari giggles a bit. It’s mildly hysteric in nature. “Hehe do you like it? I just thought it up…”
>She nods off a little, but shakes her head and looks at you again.
“When… when did you go to bed?”
>”I didn’t, I had to fill an order.” She gestures loosely toward the potions.
>”Hephaestic Drought…” She yawns and rubs her eyes a moment. “Blacksmithing guild in Canterlot wanted some for a ceremony… or whatever… It pays good though, so I took them up on the offer.”
“Hephaestic Drought takes several hours to brew… and you had an order of… a bunch of them? Sisters divine, you… didn’t sleep for a while now, huh?”
>”Maybe a day or so? I lost count after hour twenty-three… Hey, look at this thing…”
>Ari sprawls herself on the table and giggles as she rolls a stray marble around.
>She really needs some sleep.
“Uhm, how about I get you to bed? You need it. Badly.”
>”Nuh-uh! I got to mail these posthaste! I’m glad you woke me…”
>You stop Ari from getting up, which get’s her to huff a little.
“I can mail them! I did it last time anyway, so how about I get you some tea and you go rest, alright?”
>Ari nods a bit, though you're unsure if she’s agreeing or trying to stave off sleep.
>”What’s the book for?”
“I got a new spellbook! But… I’ll tell you about it later, you’re more important right now.”
>You make some tea, chamomile, to be specific, for that extra knockout punch.
>By the time you bring the tea back to Ari, she’s fast asleep.
>You gather a blanket and pillow from a nearby closet and bring them to Ari.
>You drape the blanket over Ari and lightly lift her head to stick the pillow under her.
>Luckily she’s out like a light, so she’s not getting up anytime soon.
>You set the tea nearby and take the crate of potions and set them by the door.
>You hum a light tune as you make up a cup of tea for yourself.
>It’s not even noon yet but Ari’s sleepiness must have rubbed off on you, since you're feeling kinda tired too.
>You feel yourself start to drift as you're pouring over your new spellbook, so you grab another blanket and bundle up next to Ari.
>What dreams do the stars have in store, Fae? You’ll know soon enough…

Too tired to think up a good ramble this time, other than that I should have done some coloring. Gotta draw Fae in Krita more, it'd be nice.

Here’s the final version. There were another two attempts before this but after the previously posted image: another one on copy paper, and on digital one; scrapped both. Also I figured out what I was doing with the previous attempts—I forgot that shoulder and “upper arm” are separate. Maybe I’ll give that pose another shot now that I know.

I need a spoon fed guide like a fitness workout. Draw x circles a day, x squares, fap 9 times, etc. What is the routine that should be followed to start drawing?
>>
>>39084659
Art can be broken on the basics/fundamentals, the good thing about art is that you don't need a routine to get good at it, if you work on fundamentals and draw a lot, you will get good.
There are multiple exercises you can try out, like tracing a drawing you like so you can really enter that artist mindset. There are other exercises that this thread has links to on jewtube, i recommend you look into it.
>>
>>39083798
Nice! You've progressing a lot recently anon!

>>39084695
I'm the type who would like a routine. Left to the infinite options for doing, choice paralysis sets in and I do something else.
>>
>>39084729
In that case, I would recommend you work on exercises for fundamentals morning to Friday, choose a time you are free and work on exercises for different fundamentals each day.

I don’t listen to music while drawing, though. I like to listen to MLP fanfic readings and random creepypastas while drawing.

Is it worth it for some one who sometimes draw stuff on mouse just for fun to buy a budget tablet for drawing or am I going too far?
>>
>>39087675
you can get a tablet for less than the cost of a triple a video game. one is full of microtransactions and keeps compelling you to consoom, the other allows you to produce. so, what'll it be?
>>
>>39087418
Cute Pinkie! I like her
>>
>>39087684
Yeah this is some nice motivation dude, I’ve done some drawings and edits with my mouse, always feel good when you do something that is just an idea in your head. Drawing is an ability I’ve always been jelly about, but I don’t feel motivated to keep doing it on mouse if I want something a little bit more “serious” and doing it on paper feels kinda boring for me because it’s harder and I can’t color the shitty stuff I do
>>
>>39087675
Yeah. I bought mine just because I always wanted one despite ever since 2015 I didn't draw enough for it to be "worth the price". Someday I'll actually use it enough, I hope, but doodling something once in a month with it is hellah fun.
>>
>>39087675
cheapest tablets ive seen are like $50, best way to go about it until you get your bearings on your process and figure out what you really need. worst case scenario it was cheap, oh well. id say when you get to the point of drawing seriously on about a daily basis, a big fancy tablet is a legitimate route to go

Doing some MSpaint sketches on ponyville style houses, it's really hard to grasp that kind of european timber framed style mixed with the children fantasy and yet still designed to look rustic and whimsical.
The entire room standing on a single column was kind of my idea of situation were ponies wanted an extra attic space but being disinterested in making a proper house expansion. I know it still lacks the cutesy elements and any sort of plants to make it count as proper Ponyville house but I would still like to hear some opinions/suggestion on how to improve on this.
Also excuse my lack of any logical perspective, usually I prefer to lock out the general look for the concept than work out how it's proportions would actually work later.

This is one of those exercises that you can't really fuck up if you're honest with yourself, if it helps try to imagine real cube or cylinder shaped objects you're familiar with like a package or can or mug or die and simply spend time drawing that from your imagination in whatever angle you can, get as varied as possible. If you cannot do this you will struggle with more complex things and 20 min a day every day or every other day should give you sizeable command over the skill within a month.

Is there an actual simplistic, start from 0 guide to drawing somewhere? Part of me is just expecting "put the pen down and start" but I would appreciate if there was a guide of some sort. Rightmost is Soapstone's digital debut. (Her eyes are funky looking)
Middle is a head of Tealight, though her hat is different. (Probably could have added an ear somewhere)
And finally leftmost is a nameless office mare head. (Pencil "Penny" Pusher was a name I had floating around, though I'm unsure if I'll do anything with it.)
Hope I get the time to draw more, or do anything pone related, really. Such is life, unfortunately.

nah, i don't think he realizes that cheap tablets exist. or, he does, but "needs" one with a screen. I use used sketchbooks, sticky notes, my phone, mobile tablets, drawing tablets, etc to draw. tools don't make the artist, so showing them their hypothetical magical solution isnt actually a big deal kinda forces them to get over it. anyway, im off to go find the brush that finishes the rest of the mare

>>39099322
They're nice to have, but nobody "needs" a tablet to be a good artist, and having one won't make you better at art. Practice makes you better at art.
>>
>>39099299
I don't remember what P mine is but it's the same brand.
A bit of investment gave me access to helpful drawing softwares and most importantly Ctrl+Z. Pushed a lot of things in the right direction. I say it's worth it if you really want to get into it.
>>39099373
That's true. And having a tablet does help with practicing imo.
>>
>>39099373
Come on, that's not true. We have to hide our art from others from shame or sometimes even sexual reasons. Having a purely digital workflow makes this much easier than on paper because you can alt-tab or delete files easily, and drawing with mouse or bad tablet makes the process longer and increases the chance of getting caught. Even you have to admit that for these reasons a tablet holds a special value for our beginner artists.
>>
>>39099373
>having one won't make you better at art
there are plenty of fandom artists that rely on software's smoothing feature to draw pixel perfect lines. while it's a crutch, by the time they release their work, you can't tell that they used it.
>>
>>39099322
I think what he means is; tablets are a great tool and can make your life a little bit easier, if you know how to use them properly. However, you don't need to use a tablet to draw, or even animate; just make a flip book. I recognize that tables are a huge help, but I think the question lies as to what kind of table you should buy.

Now here is where we get into the controversial part. There are many arguments for screen less tablets (Such as the Huion 640P), as well as, many arguments for screen tablets (such as the Huion Kamvas 13). In my opinion, a screen lass tablet is good for beginner (and even advanced) artist; most are cheap (which is huge if you are on a budget) and most, at least the one that I bought, are a reliable tool compatible with most OS.

Now, I am not as familiar with screen tablets (since those things are expensive as fug). However, I've heard many good points for screen tablets. Most come with a shit ton of programmable buttons that you can use to make life easier, allways being to see where you are drawing is a plus. But I've also heard a lot of issues regarding them (mostly due to graphics card issues and drivers).

As stated before; a tablet is a great tool that you can use; if you know how to use it. However, owning one would not make you a better artist. Sure, you will get some quality of life improvements such as programmable buttons, undo, etc. But I would argue that these little improvements could also hurt your skills, specially if you are just starting out.

Here is an example; undoing is great (specially if you uber-fucked up with a line, or delete an entire layer), but it also promotes poor hand control. I can't count the times that I have undo a "bad line" when I was starting out. Most of my early work where chicken scratches looking graffiti. And I knew that, if I just sit my ass down an practice doing continuous lines I could make my lines more fluent.

Thank you for reading my Ted Talk. I hope you have a wonderful night!

I'm not trying to discourage anyone, if you've been drawing for any amount of time you've almost certainly seen the 'hoarder'. Buying materials, software, books, saving tutorials, doing everything, except drawing. And a tablet can be the start of that. A simple piece of caution from experience.

While that's usually true, and I kept getting the same advice for ages, it's only after I ignored it and committed by buying a fancy tablet that I went from faffing about and repeatedly picking up and dropping drawing over literal years to consistently drawing 2-3 hours every day for the past half-year, no breaks.
While I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone for no reason, if someone feels like that hard commitment (or perhaps the guilt for having spent money on something and not getting enough use out of it) is what it'll take to buckle up, I'd say go for it. Sometimes you do know yourself best.
>>
>>39102172
Glad to heart it. I do mean it when I say I don't want to discourage anyone so I guess to unpack a few things that are objectively true.

1. A tablet will not make you draw better
2. If drawing is worth your time at all you will be doing it for self satisfaction in some capacity.
3. A tablet will only increase the self satisfaction you get from your work if you can pinpoint an individual digital technique, or result that you can say with confidence is necessary to your personal art goals.

If you can address all these points honestly then yeah go ahead and get whatever art materials or harware you want, but if not (and this warning comes from learning the hard way) you are setting your own art progress back God only knows how long by lying to yourself. It was Robert Henri who said, "All real works of art look as though they were done in joy." And he was right.

This thread has a tendency towards... lets call it "culture building", to be diplomatic. We should maybe avoid creating the idea that tablets are for the cool kids or the really dedicated kids.

Paint brushes, pencils, pens, papers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones just don't do the same things. They are different skills. The smudge tool will never be the same as rubbing a drawing with a piece of scrap paper, will be controlled differently. Over-loading an eraser will create yet a whole new smudge effect. The white of a screen will shine whiter than almost any paper. The black will be blacker than any thickness of lead. The lines can be sharper and curves more perfect than reality normally allows, which could be good or bad.

Basics like perspective, design, style, and fidelity of imagination carry over between all mediums, but many of the tools don't quite translate. Getting great at drawing with a tablet means that you'll have great understanding of how to use a tablet, but that only makes you pretty good with a pencil. Meanwhile, all the skill in the world with a pencil would leave you neglecting half the strong points of a tablet.

Get hardware because you want to learn the hardware and use the hardware and you value that more than the money, not because you want a digital pencil with ctrl+z and value getting good.

quick update for streams this week: there will be a double feature tomorrow!
at 4:30pm EDT we'll have a short gamedev chat stream with ReconProbe, developer of Bank of Equestria (https://reconprobe.itch.io/bank-of-equestria), it'll probably be around 30 minutes.
at 8pm we'll have a workshop with Rhorse, working on coloring, shading, and rendering. Come ready to draw and paint, we've got some fun exercises planned
Also, I'm in talks with someone about doing a workshop on crafting and physical art, what would interest you guys most out of these: crochet, knitting, sewing, or making/using stencils? or if you have other requests or suggestions just let me know
you should all know the stream url at this point, but just in case

Right now my process is describing elements from two games that I like to copy from, than going there I will be lurking for tutorials on how to complete/combine them into my project.
One thing that I would like to know from others is if it would be a good idea to create a "bootleg" version of official ponies to avoid the butthurt from Hasbro, or make OC only setting (since the combination of the games I want to do wouldn't fit in the 'vanilla' FiM setting and I dont want to go the FoE route of "everything is turbo fuck to make my setting make sense").

So I guess it really depends on what you have on mind and if you don't mind designing new characters of your own to make sure you don't do a mane6 in an OOC portrayal (and also make sure your stuff is less likely to get shot down by hasbro). Making bootlegs is... I don't know... kind of lame at times. Like, it really feels super chinese when you find a pony content that yells FiM and was made bootleg due the C&D fear.
Honestly, I usually try to work my stuff with OCs and at post FiM timelines, but it's more regarding narrative freedom than fear of a shut down.

Are you reading guides or watching videos? I know everyone says "just keep drawing and you'll get better", but if you're not learning any fundamentals, making sure you're holding your pencil/stylus properly, practicing primitives, or dedicating a page to just drawing straight lines or anything like that, you're going to stagnate. Some people do figure it all out on their own, but they're the minority.
>>
>>39110601
Yeah, this essentially, its touted around to go at your own pace and as long as you draw, whether it's once a month, once a week, once a day you'll get better. But no, you really won't, sure if you draw once a day you're bound to see improvement, but without practicing fundamentals and other art theory all you're drawings are essentially built upon nothing except freehand.

>>39110601
TBF, "keep drawing and you'll get better" works for as long as you can identify what's wrong with your drawing.

haikus are fun, but
iambic pentameter
seems even cooler

I love a mare that's purple, smart and sweet
She's lovely, Twilight Sparkle is her name
She fills my soul, she makes my life complete
I hope, I deeply hope she'd feel the same

when years have passed and all is said and done
my time on this cruel world would be for naught
if it were not for purple friendship mare
I'd never gain the talents I've now got

to sing, and dance, I learned it all for her
to write and draw (and poem craft as well)
the ponies in my head help me to smile
and keep me going through this living hell

so yeah, iambic can be pretty fun
I hope you all might give it a fair try
ten beats, in groups of two: unstressed then stressed
the rhyme is not required, but it's nice

This version is actually pretty true.

With a lot of caveats but in GENERAL western representational art idealizes depicting the 3D forms, roundness and depth, coming from early relief sculpture as new media developed to allow artists to depict the round forms that a relief sculpture shows naturally, this stands in contrast to eastern art and more modern and 'stylized' movements where instead the emphasis is on a pleasing arragnement of 2D shapes, in the case of cartooning its a bit of both where you want teh 3D forms to be real and believable, but what is of utmost importance is the 2D relationship (a character is 3 heads tall for example). But in general if you practice both depicting 3D forms as well as maintaining accurate proportions between 2D shapes as you see them you will git-gud.
I advise everyone read the vilppu drawing manual for my favorite lesson in this particular school of thought when it comes to getting better at art, though there are others and no one is 'correct'. Its a matter of taste.

Oi, I made this in Paint3D; and it's the best shit that I've made ever since I started.

But for real; I would suggest to try using all the suggestions that the anons have suggested. Every program has a different feel, try them out and see which one feels right for you.

(This is a list of programs and apps that I know of for each plataform)

PC:
- Krita
- Fire Alpaca
- Sai
- Photoshop
- Gimp
- Paint.NET

Android:
- Krita (Don't use it. It's literally a port form the PC. It sucks uber ass. But if you are a sadomasochist, go for it.)
- IbisPaint (You can get it for free in the app store and pay for the full version [very cash money of you], or get the cracked apk from literally any website [not very cash money of you, but I would still love you])

IPad:

- ProCreate
- ClipStudioPaint (I think you can get this on an android device, but I've never tried it)

Be not afraid to experiment with each program. We all have different workflows, and each program tackles workflows different. So go out there and try as many as you want; until you find the one that tickles your pickle.

>What's in here vs. TEMPO?
there are also many other places you can post, like the drawthread, waifu threads, or other generals
>/bale/
-guaranteed response to each piece of original work posted (guaranteed via thread reviews, but a lot of anons give feedback in thread too)
-community of beginners willing to give and take feedback
-livestreams; workshops and hangout/work streams (where you can hang out, chat, share your screen and get live feedback, etc) semi-weekly, and thread reviews when each thread dies
-laid back atmosphere, everyone just draws what they want on a whim, requests and prompts don't really work or belong here (which is totally fine imo, plenty of that in other threads)
>/tempo/
-more skilled artists of many different artforms (eg. music, video editing, gamedev)
-more general and less art focused than /bale/
-generally slower thread
-more likely to get more technical
-it appears that things shared in /tempo/ tend to spread a bit further and quicker than stuff in /bale/ (from stuff like the rewatch stream, cross-posting images, etc. Might just be placebo though)
>/draw/
-tons of free ideas
-plenty of opportunity to be funny and clever
-since /r/'s outnumber /d/'s, it's usually rare for a /d/ to go unnoticed
-not the friendliest place for posting unrelated, original art (in my experience (usually people aren't rude, it just seems like not too many care (again, just in my experience, I haven't been in thatd thread in a while))
-the thread can get pretty full of shitposting
>other threads
-blessing any thread with original/new content will always be based
-no reason not to crosspost your stuff here anyway imo

you can't really go wrong, it's all just up to personal preference. I'd recommend giving all of them a try, it's not like you have to pick one and stick to it, use them all to their strengths. We're all on the same board and at the end of the day it really doesn't matter which particular thread you choose to post your art in
regardless of where you decide to post, I can't wait to see your pones! Good luck!

In photoshop there should be an option to show a palate docker. Once you have that out there are many types of palate; chose the one called swatches (or look at all the palates and chose the one that you like best.) Once done, there should be an option to allow to add more rows and columns.

If you want; you can use the image on this post to create the pixel art in the canvas. (just add the corresponding color to the new cell), or you can go ahead and do your own pixel art on the color palate.

I know that this meme is starting to get old; but I wanted to make a green text while it's still hot.

> Be feedback pone
> About to have dinner at my favorite restaurant
> It's a nice place. The wait time is always long, but damn, it's worth it
> After a while I am finally seated
> Hell yea, right next to the kitchen

> After taking my time reading the menu (a waste of time since I already knew what I want to order) a cute handsome waiter approaches to take my order
> "Are we ready to order?"
> I proceed to order the Chicken Marsala with some breadsticks, and Pasta e Fagioli.
> Apple Cyder to drink, and apple pie for dessert.
> I thank the waiter and she tells me that "It should be ready in a few minutes"
> I node and thank her again.

> Out of curiosity I keep my eye on her
> She is walking to this pale colt
> The guy looks like he is done with life, but life is not done with him
> "Hello Sir! Are we ready to order?"
> "Yes darling, I think I am. Do you know what I'm craving? A little perspective. That's it. I'd like some fresh, clear, well-seasoned perspective. Can you suggest a good wine to go with that?"
> wut.cpp has clearly executed in both the waiter and my face
> "Sorry sir, I don't think I get what you mean"
> The guy's face twist into this sadistic glace that would scare the shit out of the princess themselves if they were here
> "Just tell the chef to provide me with the best food he got"
> The room fell into silence so heavy, you can practically feel it creeping down on your neck
> The waiter nods and proceeds to jot down some notes on her writing pad

> After pondering on what the old bat meant by "perspective" the waiter came out of the kitchen with my order
> The food was brilliantly done, as always
> As much as I wanted to eat it all, I couldn't help myself to take my time and enjoy it
> After an hour or so I was about to eat my apple pie when out of the corner of my eye I spot the old bat
> The fucker had an order of Tomato and Parmesan Risotto, with a side of Italian stuffed tomatoes, and pecan pie for dessert.
> Since we both ordered around the same time, I calculated that we both must have received our order around the same time (+-15 minutes apart)
> This meant that the old geezer hasn't touched his food at all for around an hour
>>
>>39120121
Cont...

> I decided to let it go and finish my apple pie
> This would have been followed by 15 minutes of complete and utter peace
> Would have
> Before I knew it, I heard the sound of a chair scraping the floor, and there he was
> The old bat, who must have been just (if not close to) the same height as Celestia and Luna, stands up and walks away from the restaurant
> WeirdButOk.c
> Before I could go back to eating my apple pie I heard our waiter shout "Wait, sir, please stop!"
> Before she could catch up, the old guy had already left the restaurant
> Apparently the cheap stake left without paying
> Part of me finds the whole scene hilarious but seeing the look of frustration of the waiter also made me kind of mad at the old geezer
> I finished my apple pie, pay up my order, thanked (and gave an emotional supporting hug) the waiter, and walked home.

> fast forward two weeks, I am on my way to the same restaurant for some prime gourmet cuisine
> It's closed
> It is not "We are close for the day" closed, it's "We are permanently closed" closed
> TheFuckIsThis.asm
> As I was about to walk home to ponder what kind of curse was this shit, I saw a familiar figure coming out of the back entrance of the restaurant
> It's the same waiter from that day
> She sees me and we greet each other
> I ask her about the restaurant
> Apparently the old guy that came that day is some sort of food celebrity, and gave the restaurant a bad review
> This caused the restaurant's stocks and patreons to decline, essentially killing any source of income to keep the restaurant afloat
> We share a few glances of the restaurant, and after paying respects, we go our way

> I am now at home
> Still wondering how a single pone could have such influence to bring down an entire life's work with just his opinion
> Still wondering how a single pone's actions ruined the life of hundred of employees. Many of them with families to feed
> But the thing that still keeps me awake at night; WHAT THE FUCK DID HE MEAN BY PERSPECTIVE?

Great gestures!
But I would advise not drawing oblique boxes since it's not great for learning perspective or anything really. maybe one point perspective but that's about it

Aw that's great! Nice simple flank too, although maybe the dock should be risen a little? Although according to vectors like pic related I'm wrong
>>39120310
Nice ponies in boxes! Maybe try changing the angles for every box, like having different cameras from all angles focused on one single pony in a box.
>>39120121

This is getting out of hand. I blame Purp.

Used to be on the same boat. Just post it; I promise we don't bite or bark. We all start drawing bad but we become better by practice and constructive criticism. However, you need to post your art in order to receive criticism.
>>
>>39121186
Dont be proud now, post your drawings anon, they may suck ass but sharing art with people who will give you feedback to how start drawing better and better is a very nice feeling, please do post your shit here anon, this is a beginner thread after all.

Does she speaks in memes? Or does she use references as yes or no?

Ponklmao's speech tend to adapt to what they are doing. This poor filly has suffered the wrath of a particularly mischievous Ponklmao, so it's her speech is a bit more meme centric

Is "Perspective" the 727 equivalent of /bale/?

BTW; those are some good looking, cute pones. Keep it up anon!
>>
>>39125157
these are good anon, try to draw thru the head the same way you did thru the neck, it will help keep the features in perspective, just dont go too hardcore on it cuz cartooning demands breaking perspective rules sometimes.
