We roamed the stale, cold world... No horizon in sight. The rulers of old, stripped, of pride and glory...

If feels as yesterday that we were turning the wheels of progress. Until the Frost... stopped it all.

Suddenly, without a warning. When tides are changed, they changed for all of us. No matter the class. We've lost our will to snow. And with it, the last traces of equinity. Families torn asunder, hearts broken, friends lost... nopony could stop it as the winds blew harder and the ice grew ever thicker.

We bid farewell to plenty. And for those who remained, came the time to adapt. The Princesses secured Canterlot, but even they cannot keep an entire city warm forever.

We decided to leave our homes, and head North. We roamed for weeks, maybe months. Leaving behind, all the things we once believed had made us. It was Hope, that pushed us forward. Slowly... Step by Step... We knew the cost of our journey, and we paid the price. A hundred times. Finally, the time has come... to built the last city on Equestria.

In the center of a sheltered crater, far in the North, the greatest Magiteks and Artificers pooled their knowledge to create The Generator. It's not much, but even as it sparks to life and blessed warmth runs through frost bitten limbs, melting frozen tears long cried out from faces, you feel purpose thrumming through your hooves.

You are The Captain. Under Celestia and Luna's Decree, you are to lead The City. Your orders are law, your duty simple.

THE CITY. MUST. SURVIVE.

To preserve civilization from the chaos of its own downfall, we have fled to the end of the world. We will have to adapt to survive. Who will You become in the process?

The Frostland awaits, and your merger herd awaits your words. Eighty ponies, all told.

Do you accept your duty, Captain?
>>
[[Welcome to Frostpony, a CYOA that I'm writing... mostly because I've lost my mind and because Frostpunk is just that good that I've become helplessly lost to it and have decided to bring it over to ponyworld.

The rules are simple and I'll post 'em here. (you) are The Captain, the leader of The City, and your objective is to Keep The City Alive, whatever that means to you is what will write this story.

Your decisions from how many ponies go to do individual tasks, to what gets built, or doesn't, will change how your story ends. As the story progresses, I, The Chronicler of The City, will give (you) objectives, or things that might need to be completed.

At any time, (you) can ask for more details, or to pause, and time will 'freeze' till (you) have made a decision, for better or worse.

Any time that I am directly addressing you all out of character, you will see double brackets [[ at the start of the post ]] and at the end of the post. Any other information is valid.

Everything else is up to you, Captain. If you're interested, please feel free to post. A speech, instruction for your ponies, curiosity into the identities and nature of the ponies depending on you, heck, a description for yourself besides The Captain. Let me know and the story shall begin.

ACTUAL RULES-
1. No Flaming. We can't afford the coal loss.
2. Time Freezes for Decisions and Discussions unless explicitly stated otherwise.
3. Death is a real and Permanent thing in Frostpony. Don't get put on ice.
4. Particularly Graphic requests will be ignored. You can't turn the City into a giant Orgy. Everyone would get frozen together and die. And your willy would snap off anyway. That's not fun.
5. [reserved for later use]
6. Unlike in the actual game, a law can be revoked... but it will prevent you from passing a new law, so think carefully.
7. The City Must Survive.

The Chronical is thus written. We await your decision, Captain.]]

Well, can't turn it on without fuel, so send everybody out to start gathering resources.
>>
>>38870502
Haven't played the game yet but let's apply some logic, let's see how are our ponies.
>Do they have occupations?
>What are their stats?
>What are their names?
>>38870595
>send everybody out to start gathering resources
Not yet, first let's see if there is some pony that is more useful for that.
>>
>>38870669
Even if it is somebodies special talent, They'll be doing it either way and we'd just be losing out on the productivity of those that aren't doing it. Now if somebody has a special talent that's more useful elsewhere, than having them do that is better. But we kinda need stuff to do anything, so we should gather by default and than specialize as needed.
>>
>>38870669
gotta agree with >>38870707
Although I very much would like to know the kind of ponies we have under us and what they are capable of.
Do we have any snowpony descendens with us?
Let's give ourselves a personality to, while we can. I vote pegasus mare!
>>
>>38870851
Warm fluffy wing hugs FTW!
>>
>>38870707
>Now if somebody has a special talent that's more useful elsewhere, than having them do that is better. But we kinda need stuff to do anything, so we should gather by default and than specialize as needed.
We not only need resources, we must be sure that the generator is not broken, it could be fatal sending the ponies to the cold search resources to feed the generator only to have it damaged.
>Even if it is somebodies special talent, They'll be doing it either way and we'd just be losing out on the productivity of those that aren't doing it.
We don't need them to have a "resource catering" cutie mark, just to make sure if they are capable enough. Also see if there is a engineer or something among them, also see what are they capable for.
>>
>>38870386
I'll have a go at our introductory speech, since nobody else has yet.
>"You have all done well to make it this far, but our work has only just begun. As your Captain, I can only promise that I'll do my best to make sure we survive, and I hope that you all promise to do the same. My first goal is to get The Generator running, and I will need every able-bodied stallion and mare to pitch in. Thank you, and remember: together, there is no storm we cannot weather."
>>38870851
Also voting for us being a pegasus mare.
>>
>>38870946
And if the generator has a problem, what will it be fixed with if we have no resources?
>>
>>38871641
Um, anon, I think you don't understand my point, I'm not against the idea of gathering resources, but we need to check what we got in our hooves. I mean, do we even know what it uses as fuel? We could send everypony to search random stuff, then what? How can could guarantee us that all that things won't be useless for now?
If we see what we got, at least we can create an actual plan.
>>
>>38871831
We have snow, ponies, random material resources and ruins scattered about, and a gigantic fuck off coal powered generator right in the middle. Check the image in the OP. Some of us actually played the game this is based on.

The cold of the Frostland is relentless as finally, finally the wind dies down enough for you to speak to your ponies. The Generator does not run yet, and a supply tent stands defiant against the snow as your ponies cluster together, their LAMPS the only thing keeping them all warm enough to even have survived to this point.

But now is not the time to overthink. There is work to be done, and if you are to survive to tomorrow, the Generator needs to be brought online. A glance around shows you that there's a small platform for you to stand on and after a moment testing the air, you unwrap your coat enough to allow your wings to escape from it's confines for the first time in... too long.

You stretch your wings, the chilling air brushing through your fluffy warm feathers as you catch enough air to jump up to the top of the platform. How terrifying. A world so cold that not even a Pegasus's fluffy down and adapted for cold bodies couldn't stand. You look at your herd and mark each pony. Of them, you have fifty ponies that are laborers, either not processing a special talent that could help with more complicated tasks, or special talents geared towards hard work. There's a fine mix of unicorns, earth ponies, and pegasi in that group, and then you have a group of 15 specialists. "Engineers" as so titled by princesses while this crazy plan was being drawn up.

Interestingly, it's a even mix of 5 unicorns, 5 pegasi, and 5 earth ponies, and all of them have been intently studying and carrying incredibly valuable blueprints. But until you can build them a workshop there's no point to breaking out the blueprints in the wet. You'll need resources to begin work anyway!

Finally, the last 15. The little ones. No one, after all, escapes the frost. Fifteen colts and fillies, looking so tired as they're gently held by their parents or by those who stepped in... the trip here was not kind.

These ponies all gaze up at you as you spread your winds and take a moment to catch your breath before pulling your scarf down from your muzzle, letting your voice pick up and echo around the crater that is to become your home. "My Little Ponies, you have all done well to make it this far! We have survived our first step, but the work has only just begun!" You call out, raising a hoof as the weary herd stiffens up and straightens as you call out.

"As your Captain, I can only promise that I shall do my best to make sure that we Survive, and I hope you all promise to do the same! Our first goal- we must get the Generator running, and I need every able-bodied stallion and mare to pitch in! We shall not bend! We shall not break! My Little Ponies, Together we WILL Weather the Storm!"
>>
>>38872308
Tired, but appreciative cheers echo from your small heard before you glance around. In order to build the Last City, you'll need Wood, Steel, Coal, and of course, Food. The rations you brought when you marched from Canterlot so many moons ago won't last forever, but at least you have enough for the next few days.

The area has scattered and broken supply crates. Good, sources of wood, and steel. They were supposed to be delivered in neat stacks but you can tell that they were dropped harshly from height... and considering how quickly the Frost set in, no wonder. You quietly pray that you won't find any corpses under the snow as you let out a sigh of relief. There, out on it's own, are two large stacks of coal with a large stack of wood nearby.

You bite your lower lip in thought before setting your ponies to work. The piles are small, setting too many ponies on each one would just have them getting in each others away, especially when they have to walk the resources back to the generator and the supply tent manually, so you settle on... fifteen being a good number. This sort of Gathering labor only has a single specialist amongst your Ponies, a Earth Pony stallion with a green coat and bark-brown mane, Timber, who worked as a lumber worker and generally hauled and collected large amounts of wood. With that in mind, you quickly put him in charge of a group of 15 ponies to collect wood, a single pony to link up with the engineers to collect steel, and two group of fifteen to collect coal. The final 4 ponies from the 'Workers' look at you in confusion as you wave for them to stay near you before you ask one of the engineers to stick with you and the rest to go with the worker to collect steel. You're saluted before your ponies disperse to their tasks, their faces set and grim as you look at the collection of five ponies before you.

These five are... particular. Special.

Applejack Apple, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Fluttershy.

No introductions needed, but their very presence very welcome. You give them a tired smile as they walk up to you and you jump down from the platform. "Captain?" Applejack asks as Pinkie jumps in place. "Shouln't we be gettin' on with resource collectin'?"

"Yes, but there's something that I wanted to quickly ask about Applejack. Frost or not, ponies care deeply about our Elements of Harmony, so I wanted to ask all of you to be leaders amongst Our Little Ponies." You say, looking each pony in the eye in turn as you speak. Applejack, Dash, Pinkie, and Rarity are all Workers, and Fluttershy a Engineer from her medical knowledge and animal skill.

You mentally try to ignore the -other- reason why that animal skill might be needed but... well, ponies need to eat, after all.

"Shoot, we ain't special. Not after the Frost." Applejack says with a sigh, kicking a hoof in the dirt. "C'mon Captain, ain't no two ways about it. We all pull our weight, or there ain't gon' be no City for every pony to make it -to-!"
>>
>>38872360
Pinkie hops up and gives you a hug, and you can only give a weary and wane smile in return before you stand up straight. "Of course, Applejack. Still, if you five could..."

You blank for a moment... resources are being gathered, but even as you glance around you note that the gathering is slow, inefficient. You have a decent supply of wood, you could make Gathering Shelters for your ponies to gather up the resources around them, giving them a warm-ish place to step out from the snow for a moment after collecting materials, though they might appreciate having actual Tents to keep the wind out after working all day for The City, or even get a Workshop built and manned to start unpacking the Blueprints to start building this city.

But what about the foals? Even now you see them huddled together, a riot of colors in bulky warm coats, the little Lamps glowing brightly as they stare at the Generator and whisper to one another, even as the most tired looking ones are hugged and held by Applebloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo. A silver one that you don't think you've actually met yet, but she's wearing glasses with a single cracked lens and looks emotionally dead, tear-streaks staining her fur, not that many of the foals look better.

There is much to do Captain. Your ponies are collecting the things you'll need to build the City, but where to begin?
>>
>>38872381
Shelter should be the first thing we build since sleeping in the open would just cause disease. As for speeding up the work, we could build temporary roads to make easier paths for them to travel back and forth on.

On second thought, a single quick workshop and then tents would probably be a better order.
>>
>>38872417
>>38872435
A moment of thought pasts before you fluff your wings gently, sighing before you straighten, your eyes hardening as you turn your attention back of Applejack. "We need a Workshop. That has to be our highest priority or no matter what shelter we make we'll freeze before..."

You pause and your head falls slightly before Applejack lays a hoof on your shoulder, nodding firmly before Rarity steps up to you. "There Darling, it will be fine, we promise. Here!"

The Fashionista digs into her saddleback and pulls out a exquisitely thick and fluffy looking scarf, which she gently ties around your neck before tucking into your coat with her magic, smiling. "Much better! Your ponies need to be able to see you Darling, and a splash of color with all of this dreary white will be a comfort to us all." She coos, and you can't help but smile before you nod your head and guide the mares around, beginning planning out the city in your head. The 'grid' and city streets all would center around the Generator in a perfect circle, making it easier to navigate and to not allow any one side to get buried by snowdrifts. You mutter as you pace, the five mares dogging your heels as you quickly outline where you want the Workshop and... you frown. How many tents?

You glance at the foals. At least enough for them. Maybe a few of the adults. But resources are so low and you'll need to get research started.

You look up, biting your lower lip, resisting the urge to wet your lips, knowing it will end with them cracking and blistering from your spit freezing on them. You give the girls their directions, and they trot off to get started, when a stallion hauling coal from one of the work crews trots by. "Captain! Beg a moment of your time ma'am. We've got a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it." He eyes the sky wearily, noting a cloud drift by even as Celestia's sun creeps further up into the sky. "At the moment, our work time is from dawn till dusk, to keep us out of the coldest times of the day. But some of the lads, well, we're thinking that it might not be -enough- Captain."

The stallion lets out a weary sigh. "Maybe I'm just tryin' too hard to noggin' this Captain, it's this blasted Frost..."

You gently pat the Stallion on the shoulder and he bucks up a bit, nodding at you as he straightens his back and goes back to hauling coal, leaving you to ponder.

At a glance, resource collection is going well. There will be a great need for a lot more wood and steel, and you can't help but think that the Generator is going to chew through coal like no one's business.

You need more. And a chill runs down your spine as you look towards the foals again, moping by the Generator and whispering to each other, some looking at you in curiosity or awe, a white and purple maned foal bouncing a bit in excitement before slumping tiredly upon seeing your scarf.
>>
>>38873095
The options lay themselves out in your mind. Emergency Shifts, or a Foal Labor force? Are things truly that desperate that you can't come up with something else for the foals to do? You mentally reel through your list of ponies that came with you, and remember that a Miss Cheerilee made it. Teaching would be good?

The branches drift in front of your eyes and the thoughts make you shudder, or maybe it's a cold wind that brushes against your heart.

You are the Captain. And your word will be Law. No matter what you decide. Surely your ponies could handle an Emergency Shift, and work through twenty-four hours. You did much worse while even getting -to- the Generator. Yes, a Emergency shift, maybe for the Workshop, unpack and prepare some of the more important blueprints, get the City started up more firmly.

But what will you do Captain?

[[ The Chronicler's Advice: The Words of the Herd

Captain, every once in a while you will get requests or questions from your Herd, asking for you to resolve a problem or trying to force your priority one way or another. As you are The Captain, you can brush off or ignore, or accept and make promises towards such requests as you will, but remember that in the end only your decision on the matter matters.

We should make sure the option to have emergency shifts will always be available. Lets hold off on the foals for now since we have a lot of building to do. Though I am leaning towards foal care, so let's pre-plan some space for them. Since we are planning city layout, lets keep in mind the possibility that desperate ponies might come to us for shelter, so we also have to consider growth.
>>
>>38873395
[[Ok. I'm going to give it a bit to see if there's any other inputs on the next step before we start moving along.

Ah such a thing. Much like a snowball at the top of a hill, it starts small and slowly... till the momentum starts to build.]]
>>
>>38873395
Seconding this, it's a sound set of plans.
>>
>>38873395
>>38873981
With your minds eye you contemplate your plan, humming. The buildings for foals are rather long, but thanks to some not so wild intuition (MODS TO THE GAME COUGH) you can still lay them out sideways so they take roughly two-tents worth of space. Yes, that would do quite nicely honestly.

You give a little sigh as you look at the area around your generator. Lots of space right now, but you should be cautious and meticulous about where you lay your paths. Sure it's easy to throw down some wood to give pones something sturdy to step on but they'd probably not like having to put down and take up the wood over and over again.

You walk around, marking out a rough outline in both the snow and in your mind of where you want the buildings to go. A ring of tents, then houses, wrapped close to the Generator, capped off by medical tents, maybe? Or one medical tent and another house. Something small that would fit in the last remaining spot of the inner most ring, considering that ten total 'house' sized buildings would fit within.

A giggle draws your attention as you notice the gaggle of foals now cheerfully trotting after you as you draw lines in the snow, little muzzles and hooves copying your step and marching along behind you like ducklings after their mother, only occasionally diverting off to romp in the snow a bit. You smile at the foalish energy. At least some of the young ones can still find joy in the world.

You firm your face as you finish marking out where you want everything to be and eye the Workshop quickly falling into place just behind the supply pile. Nodding to yourself you trot over to the Generator, noting a large bell, and firmly grip the pull ring before ringing the bell loud before your voice bellows out and fills the crater.

"HEAR YE, HEAR YE! NEW LAW IN THE CITY! AS OF OH-SEVEN-THIRTY, EMERGENCY SHIFTS ARE NOW AUTHORIZED!"

You huff and take a few breaths even as the groans of the 'adults' drifts over from the snowbanks and gathering areas, but your mind is set and your eyes firm. This is what will be best for The City.

You frown a bit. The City. Needs more than that to really be called a home, doesn't it? It needs a name. You resist the urge to sit down and ponder as your tail flicks in annoyance. You're going to need to name the City. And while you're thinking about it, you should probably find Fluttershy or one of the other Engineers and assign the first research project to prioritize.

So, what next Captain?

Faster Gathering- better equipment for collecting things makes gathering faster
Coal Thumper- A magitek device that draws coal up from deep below the surface to be gathered by ponies.
Sawmill- The crater has a lot of frozen trees inside of it, we could use a sawmill to turn those trees into viable wood for The City.
Steelworks- this location was selected for it's two massive iron deposits. We'll need to build steelworks atop of them to make use of these deposits for The City.

Hothouse- Eventually we will need food. This building allows us to farm in the Frostlands.

Beacon- A special weather balloon donated and designed by Princess Twilight Sparkle, this acts both as a scouting outpost and a guiding light for anypony or any creature who seeks shelter from the storm.

Steam Hub- the Generator's heat reaches pretty far, but it cannot reach forever. These hubs will allow you to spread the heat of the Generator long distances.
Heaters- Conventional heating technology that works on basic electricity can be run from the Generator as well. These heaters offer a quick way to bring up the temperature of cold workcenters and buildings. Unfortunately due to power costs they cannot be utilized in homes.

As the work is done and the Workshop is completed, you settle on what you want the first research task to be. The Beacon must be done, not only to guide your ponies to their new home, but to maybe find more of the valuable resources that got lost in the snow.

You call back in four of the engineers from resource gathering, and they plus Fluttershy all greet you as you stand next to the workshop. A quiet word with the rest of the mane six sends them to take the Engineer's places collecting resources for now.

"This is the first major task. We need that Beacon up and running as soon as possible." You turn and gesture to the towering workshop with a single hoof. "You should have everything inside to not only get the blueprints out but to be able to make the small scale mock ups in order to properly instruct our ponies on how to build it. There's no time to waste, we need a Beacon as soon as possible!"

The Engineers, even the shy butter-yellow pegasus pony, all salute you and rapidly move inside to get to work. You huff in approval before returning to your planning. It'll take roughly five to six hours for them to finish researching how to set up the Beacon, and you don't want to mess that up or you might lose the precious weather balloon.

Nothing to do now but plan... and wait.

This might be a REALLY dum idea, but could we have the foals put up tents? Tell them it's just like a camping trip and have cheerilee direct them?
Putting up tents doesn't sound like the most laborious job but it at least helps us get places to sleep for the start.
Once we got the balloon we should look into the Coal Thumper. We only have 2 hours of generator time right now and that is by far not enough. That thing should, if possible, be running 24/7 for us not to freeze to death.
I'd prefer keeping medical tents close to the generator, too. Those might become our lifeblood
>>
>>38876451
Depends on if this has irreversible laws that prevents you from doing certain things until they're passed. Also, until the temperature starts dropping, tents are enough to keep everybody alive. Maybe a medical center if ponies got weak constitutions. Also, we can squeeze medical facilities into the area around a steam hub, so guaranteed hot areas should be dedicated to housing.

Frankly, one thing about this whole 'Captain' business that makes you feel a bit uncomfortable is the fact that your word is Law. Period. You might not have any guards to enforce them, but you are the guiding words for the City. You tell ponies where things need to be and how they need to be to ensure that the Snow won't damage the City. It's a complex job with lots of moving parts, much like being a Mayor but more so, so even during these early stages the Princesses explicitly ordered you not to do any gathering or building to keep your mind sharp.

Now that you're seeing all the problems that you need to resolve, you're starting to understand their position about this more. You bite your lower lip as options race through your head, having to quietly remind yourself that research takes -time- because even with the blueprints they have to make the mock-ups in the Workshop and actually build the pieces to help the buildings get built. It's the only way you're able to make these buildings spring up in hours instead of in days, after all, a modular design that the Engineers back in Canterlot came up with after being tasked by The Princesses.

You ponder what exactly counts as 'Labor', frowning deeper as you think it over. Putting up Tents wouldn't be too much of a struggle... right? You idly remember making your own tent when you were a filly scout. You get up to root through the supplies to double check the blueprint for the Tents before balking as you look at them. Heavy wooden struts, metal framing, and spring-loaded forces? Nope! That's incredibly dangerous, you'd have to pass the Foal Labor law to even -consider- having the foals do this! Heck, you're not even sure they physically could!

Laws passed as irreversible... or at least good enough as irreversible. You can back down from a law but it requires extra signatures from your Ponies to do so and at least 24 hours, and you can't pass a new law till after that twenty four hour period. You quietly accept that if you push too hard down the wrong road...

Your head is spinning and you groan in discontent before you look up at the sky again.

A shot of relief hits you and you can't help but smile a bit, calming down. That's right, it's only morning. It's 0815, just barely starting the day. The Workers and Engineers still have nine hours and forty-five minutes of work gathering, building, and researching. Everypony can pitch in after work to get things built till around 24ish when ponies are mandated to sleep to ensure at least six hours of rest... 0600 is the start of a new day.

You're on the first day and there is plenty of time as you watch your ponies work, and quietly start doing the math to try to project what they'll have accomplished by your next big event... completing the Beacon research.

How much coal will we for the generator have when all our current coal has been gathered together?
I still think the next research should make sure that we'll have a steady flow of coal going to keep the generator running.
That being said, how long does actually starting the generator take?
>>
>>38877422
>>38877798
[[The Generator: The Generator only needs roughly fifteen minutes to turn on to Heat Level 1, with each heat level above 1 requiring an extra fifteen minutes to get up to temp. It's very easy to do and is literally as simple as flipping a switch.

When you max out the current storage Capacity of coal, you'll have enough coal for six days of running (without collecting more coal). However, there is more coal on the ground then your ponies can store.

To put hard numbers to it, the Generator uses 144 coal per day at current settings and research level. You can store a maximum of 900 coal. You can also store up to 300 wood, 300 steel, 300 raw food, and 300 rations/meals.]]

Eventually you decide to just let time pass, trotting over to the generator to keep a wary eye on the foals, who have started to relax a bit from the long trip and are gazing up at the generator in unabashed curiosity. "Ohh, ohh, Missus Cap'n!" A perky voice from the gaggle of foals calls out as you walk up, and you give a soft smile towards the cream-and-red filly trotting towards, you drawing the rest of the foals attentions before they all start gathering around.

"Good Morning Applebloom." You greet as you sit down, looking up at the Generator yourself. "Hello young ones, how are you all today?"

A chorus of 'good' 'tired' 'okay' echoes back to you as you give the foals your full attention, even as you note the single grey-and-silver filly amongst the group continues to look down at the snow, her glasses barely hanging on her head.

You frown, gently stretching out a wing to cup under the filly's muzzle and to tilt her head up so you can look at her, purple eyes behind one cracked glasses lens and one slightly dirty one filled with grief and confusion, a state you're aware many of your ponies are in. You wouldn't be surprise if she started crying if it weren't for the fact that aren't any tears left to cry.

"... I'm here, Miss Captain." The foal responds, her voice as fragile as glass and as soft as the snow you spend so long marching through, the rest of the foals all pushing a bit closer to her to provide some comfort as you take your wing back after using your feathers to gently wipe of the lenses of her glasses.

"Sometimes that's all we can do, Silver Spoon." You respond. "Be here. It's..." You bite your lower lip and sigh softly. "It's hard, to have to continue to march onwards even after so much has been taken from us. The Frost has been cruel to all of us."

You step closer to the foals, who spread out a bit so you can sit down next to Silver Spoon before they all pack back in, Scootaloo and Applebloom pressing into your legs and Silver Spoon as Sweetie Belle daintily settles on Silver's other side, the warm, thick coats made by her fashionista sister helping to share warmth to one another even as you glance at the Lamps hanging off of their outfits. Individual heaters, powered by ponies own internal magic.
>>
>>38877897
What a powerful thing, if only it could be made even warmer. If only any of this was not necessary. But if wishes could re-heat the world and break through the Frost, you would be more worried about cooling off instead of worrying about not freezing.

You spread your wings, gathering as many of the foals as you can close to you as they all press together with you, even as you use one foreleg to hug the silver and grey filly into you. Another Orphan amongst far too many. So many ponies lost during the voyage to even get here, but to have lost them before you even left...

"One day, months, maybe years from now, we will have beaten back the Frost, and we'll once again be able to run through warm fields and sunny days once again. I believe that, with all of my heart." You say quietly, all of the foals looking up at you as you speak. "Soon, we'll have made ourselves a new home, and be ale to rest. To mourn those lost properly. To cry, to laugh, to love, to feel things beyond the cold once again."

You look up at the Generator again. "This Generator is the core of our new home. The heat it provides sure, but also as one of the most important things we could possibly have. A drive, the passion to succeed, to survive, to not lose any of our ponies to the Frost. Not again."

You smile, the first real, true smile you've been able to make since the Frost started. "Hope. We have Hope again. For us. For Equestria. For Everypony, Everycreature, Everybeing that holds Hope, we will survive and rebuild our world."

A small sniffle is heard before Silver Spoon finally breaks, fresh tears falling as she presses her muzzle and head into your chest as you hug her close, letting her cry. These foals are possibly stronger than all of the ponies who have made this trip. They've seen death, watched as members of the Voyage were lost to sudden snowfall or breaking roads, and even the youngest, a small piebald colt, and a pale gray and yellow-maned unicorn filly, kept a stiff upper lip and didn't complain once on their way here.

You let Silver cry. It's ok. The Captain is here for her, even if all you can do is try to ensure these Foals have a future.

------

Five hours later, you've helped the foals calm down, a few more breaking down in tears here and there, assuaging fears and reminding them that Hope exists, and leading them in a rousing little snowball fight which the two youngest won, the spirits-raised foals trotted off to help the adults however they could even as you finish brushing off your coat and step into the Workshop. The Engineers all lead over a single model which is being carefully manipulated by a single unicorn, who lets out a small sigh as she slots the last gear in, and turns it on.
>>
>>38877915
They let out a tired cheer as the small balloon in the model lifts to the roof of the workshop before she turns it off, and turns to face you. 'Glimmer Dusk' your mind supplies as you look at the tall black and grey maned, purple coated unicorn mare. "Captain, good timing. The Beacon Blueprints were perfect. Everything works as intended and we've got the parts for a full sized beacon ready on your order."

"Excellent work." You nod, looking each pony in the eye. Three stallions all puffing out their chests in pleasure at the praise, Futtershy gently hiding behind her mane, and Glimmer Dusk smirking even as her glasses hide darkened, tired eyes. "Now..."

The world pauses. What Next, Captain? More research is now available, and you have the resources for it. As well, there's still plenty of work to be done, building places for your ponies to sleep that aren't exposed to the elements. Now that you've finished testing the blueprints for the Beacon, you can build the full sized model right away.

So much to do. What shall you accomplish next, Captain?

[[ Time: Day 1, 1200

Enough Coal for 24 hours of generator operation
Just above 3/5ths of your capacity for wood
2/5ths of your capacity for steel
Enough Rations for your herd for three days.

Research Complete: Beacon
Laws Passed; Emergency Shift

Book of Laws is closed for the next 7 hours.

Workshop Research Complete! Available Research:
Available Research:
Faster Gathering- better equipment for collecting things makes gathering faster
Coal Thumper- A magitek device that draws coal up from deep below the surface to be gathered by ponies.
Sawmill- The crater has a lot of frozen trees inside of it, we could use a sawmill to turn those trees into viable wood for The City.
Steelworks- this location was selected for it's two massive iron deposits. We'll need to build steelworks atop of them to make use of these deposits for The City.

Hothouse- Eventually we will need food. This building allows us to farm in the Frostlands.

Unfortunately due to power costs they cannot be utilized in homes.]]
>>
>>38877948
Food next. Let's try and get the hothouse researched.
How many ponies do we need to build a beacon? We might wanna get to that as well.
>>
>>38877948
The first thing we should build is definitely the beacon. As for placement, it should be somewhere out of the way of future expansion, in the cold.
>>38878200
We do have enough rations for three days, so we're not in total danger of starving yet. I think it would be best to try and get a surplus of coal or get a reliable early game source of wood. If I remember right, Coal Thumpers take a lot of manpower (ponypower?) which is something we don't have much of, currently.
I say we should research the Sawmill.
>>
>>38878200
>>38878302
You nod thoughtfully. "Give me a moment." You say before poking your head out of one of the workshop windows. "EVERYPONY HEAR ME! I NEED TEN WORKERS TO BUILD A BEACON AND ROAD TO THE BEACON FROM THE GENERATOR! SWIFTLY AS YOU CAN, WE HAVE FAMILIES TO REUNITE!"

A rowdy cheer echoes around the Crater as ten workers rush in from their gathering tasks, stopping by the workshop to collect the critical pieces required to get the Beacon up and to inflate the balloon. They greet you as they pass, Applejack among them, who gives Futtershy a hug and a very thankful smile as she goes with the rest of the small herd of workers.

You had trotted out the outline of where you wanted things earlier and the beacon was going to be by the canyon wall, well away from everypony. It doesn't need to be in the heat to operate and you don't want it taking up precious space in the heat away from your ponies. Even as you watch the workers quickly start slapping down a road across the divot you walked, heading towards the wall.

You turn back to the Engineers, frowning as you plan out your next research upgrade.

Food? Or Wood? Both are critical, both are valuable, but what do you need more right now? Eventually you will run out of your Rations, three days from now, and eventually you will run out of wood to pick up from the ground. The piles are large but not that large, and every building you build will take wood to make, and the engineers need wood to make the mock-ups in the Workshops, and eventually steel to do the same.

So, Captain. The question stands.

Food?

Or Wood?

[[No status update this time, nothing new to report.]]
>>
>>38878302
>>38878359
Once we have a hothouse up, how long does it actually take to produce food? I figured there was a wind up time which is why I wanted to get that out of the way earlier than later.
Does food start getting produced immediately? If so, the sawmill might be the better option, we need wood to build shit
>>
>>38878375
[['Wind Up' time is just awaiting workers, which doesn't apply here. You can start producing food immediately. Earth Pony magic, yay!

Especially due to not having Hunter Huts/Flying Hunters as another way of collecting food, that whole tech-tree being removed from the story, the Hothouses are much better than they are in game (and they're already pretty darn good, just saying).

Personally I'd go for supplies first, but that's just me.]]
>>
>>38878411
Yeah ok, I never played frostpunk so I was operating under the wrong assumptions here.
Sawmill for building stuff it is
>>
>>38878613
>>38878302

[[On the 'difficulty' we're playing on, either option works, it's just a question of... ah, optimization. Pony magic makes life easier, but the Frost is still unforgiving, so don't get comfortable.]]

"Alright, enough standing around ponies! Lets get to work, we've got blueprints to unfurl! We're gonna need that sawmill and soon, so hop to it!" You command, the Engineers giving you a light cheer before they immediately sweep back into work.

You step out of the workshop, the sun shining brightly on you as the foals gather around you, your bellow when passing orders and the rushing adults perking their interest as they bounce around you asking questions rapidly.

Hope, hmm? Oh yes, you feel Hope. The future looks good so far.

Next thing we should do is check the weather forecast if we can, we need to see how critical the generator/coal situation is going to be in the near future.

Let's advance up to the completion of the beacon and in the meantime check on the workers, see if we need a medical post
>>
>>38879434
>>38880483
You step out of the Workshop and are crowded by the Foals yet again, who stick close to you as you walk over to the generator to check the rather complex weather forecaster. You have no idea how it works, outside of it needing pegasi magic to be as accurate as it is, so you wrap one wing around each handle and imagine flying as you were taught.

To your relief, it works exactly as the mock-up one in Canterlot did, and the gears sand equipment starts moving to the delight of the foals, who watch the little mechanical parts move about as your magic is channeled through various catalysts before reaching seven individual tubes, each a floating mercury thermometer that can tell the weather for the next seven days.

You huff at the starting temperature, grumbling under your breath about eggheads and Celsius as you run the mental math. It's currently -4 Celsius so it would be... -40 degrees Fahrenheit. "An accurate measurement for air temperature is more important anyway... no point in worrying about if -water freezes- or not." You snark to yourself under your breath as you look down the week.

Looks like you have... five days, including today, before you'll experience your first temperature dip. While you can't tell what the exact temperature it will be yet you can tell that it will drop one range. There will be a better chance of ponies getting sick, that's for sure.

Speaking of, you step away from the machine and again the foals trot after as you venture out into the snow to check on your gathering teams, who are all working hard. Sweetie Belle squeaks out a greeting to the working ponies and Rarity, who is hauling coal of all things. She gives you a wane smile as she trots by with another load of coal for the supplies, gently adjusting your scarf with her magic as she goes. Generous even in the hardest times.

You huff, glancing at each pony as you consider who you want for the scouting team, before the decision is taken away from you. You're not so much accosted but directly greeted by four ponies. Three Pegasi and a Unicorn. You quietly identify each one in turn. A red and white Pegasus named Depth Charge, one you know from Ponyville, a Cloud Chaser, and Rainbow Dash. You frown at Dash a bit as she gives you a rakish grin, before looking to the Unicorn... Starlight Glimmer?

"We heard the beacon was almost complete. Your Scouting party, Captain." Glimmer says with a tight smile. You both never really got along back in Ponyville though you heard what happened to her special someponies and don't want to press the issue. You have no problem with her or the other two on the scouting team, but Rainbow Dash... "And who would be your fourth and fifth?" You ask, making Rainbow's grin fall as she stares at you.

"Me and AJ. Come on Captain, you know it's for the best, AJ's one of the toughest ponies out there, and I'm one of the few ponies who can fly in the Frost. Who else would you pick for a scouting team?" Rainbow Dash argues.
>>
>>38880951
You resist the urge to argue with Rainbow Dash, well aware that your Herd is watching as you stare her down. "Those qualities would be extremely valuable -here- as well, Rainbow Dash." You say, sighing as your wings flare a bit in reminder of flight. Being grounded has been a right pain, but you mentally dream of flying again once you can raise the heat.

"Look, Captain, I know that you're a little hesitant about using me and the girls for dangerous work like this, but this is what we do best!" Rainbow Dash says, gently shooing the foals back and motioning for the other members of her 'planned' team to entertain them as she pulls you aside. "You gotta get over it. I know that Twilight is scared for us. We're scared for her and the Princesses too. That isn't a small amount of magic they're channeling to keep Canterlot warm, and then having to travel with -all- of those ponies to the Generators? She's gonna be exhausted."

You can easily read the worry on Rainbow's face as she stares at you back. "How can I do -any less- than her? How can I honestly say I'm helping if I refuse to shoulder the tasks that I know I can take? Come on Captain, you -know- me and AJ are the best for this, and no pony but -nopony- would be better for finding the ponies that got held up on the way here than she would be. Family first, that's the Apple Family."

You groan as Rainbow's reasoning hammers down your hesitations and dislike of the plan, but eventually you have to give in. "Ok, ok! You five will be the team. Have you already collected your gear?"

Rainbow nods, pointing out that she and the other three are already wearing the even heavier scouting gear. "Well collect our rations and sleds on the way out. We won't let you down Captain."

A ragged cheer breaks you and Rainbow Dash out of your conversation as you look to the crater wall, and smile tiredly as you watch the bright purple balloon inflate and rise towards the sky.

The Beacon is complete. It's time to assign the scouts and get them underway.

[[ A little Backstage knowledge- Temperatures and things like 'are any of the mane 6 going to be scouts' were determined by RNG. Ya'll had a super lucky run of rolls. Most of the time the weather dips at least once in the first three or four days, but your first dip isn't till the 5th day, which is a lot of time to set up.

It's also the option that we can be most certain will have ponies, we don't know for sure if ponies are at the other sites, and labor capacity is important for us at this point.
They might also have supplies they had brought as part of the expedition, it could be a win-win-win.

>>
>>38882578
Agreed, maybe we should put one medical post plus as many tents as we can fit inside the generator's range, and also wait to start construction until after sawmill is researched.
While we're building the houses we should also get started building gathering posts, provided we've got the materials.
>>
>>38882578
>>38882641
As you let time tick past, you look at what you've laid out and contemplate what else you'll be able to accomplish today. You'll finish researching Sawmills -just- before the end of the ten-hour work shift, which means you can start a new project and at least get the blueprints unfurled before the engineers close up the workshop. At a glance, you should be able to fit ten 'residence' sized buildings in the closest ring to the generator. Though you'll have more ponies to build tents for in the coming days, at this moment you need to ration out your supplies for things you really need, such as gathering posts and sawmills for more wood, which is what your tents primarily need.

You run the numbers, glancing at your workforce and how they're working before finalizing your numbers. By the end of shift, you should have enough wood to either make three gathering posts, each post touching at least three resource piles, two of them touching two piles of coal, then one pile of wood and the other of steel, and one post touching two piles of wood and a pile of steel, a single Sawmill, the Medical Tent, and... mayyyyybe two tents? If you're lucky and you don't need to use up too much wood making the walkways to the posts and the sawmill.

You continue to ponder the numbers, pacing back to the generator slowly. The sawmill would require roughly the same amount of wood that a single tent would require. If you built the shelters to fit everypony in a tent, you wouldn't have enough wood for a Medical Tent at all, or any of the Gathering Posts.

A compromise would be four tents, a Medical Tent, the Sawmill and a single Gathering Post, but it could hurt your overall productivity for the next day...

You stare at the generator contemplatively before your ears perk up in thought.

Sawmills produce quite a bit of wood, afterall.

You could... build -one- tent, and build two sawmills plus the gathering posts and medical tent, and then turn on The Overdrive of the Generator. Sure, it's pretty likely some ponies would get sick but with the medical tech on hand even a single medical tent could easily handle a hoofful of ponies getting sick.

You hum contemplatively Either way, building will have to wait till the end of the day, though you can start marking things down now. So, what to do?

[[OBJECTIVE: Decide which plan you will execute in preparation for building tonight.

Secondary: Your ponies need more wood and in a hurry if you want to build all the things you want to build. You can assign one of the wood gathering teams to an Emergency Shift in order to collect the Wood you need.
Secondary: Your ponies need the blueprints unpacked and the models tested so that they can get the equipment and facilities needed to survive. You can assign the Workshop team to an Emergency Shift in order to complete more research all throughout the night!

Secondary Objectives do -not- need to be completed. They are reminders of options.]]
>>
>>38882688
We can skip the sawmills since we still have resource piles. Some will get sick tonight so we will need the medical post. That's 5 for research, 5 for healing, and 10 for one gathering post. We'd have two gathering teams that can focus on wood piles and an extra 5 ponies to build as the wood becomes available. We can reassign as more gathering posts are built.
>>
>>38882688
Can we make a custom plan or should we use the suggested options? (just checking, forgive my autism)
>>
>>38883086
If not then here's my interpretation of our choices:
2 housing tent, 3 gathering post, 1 sawmill, 1 medical tent
10 housing tent
4 housing tent, 1 gathering post, 1 sawmill, 1 medical tent
1 housing tent, 3 gathering post, 2 sawmill, 1 medical tent

There's risk associated with each option, but the one I'm leaning towards is the 3rd plan, which is near to >>38882812 's suggestion. Picking that one mainly because we do need to start scaling up resource collection but it's not so critical we need to keep nearly all ponies out in the cold. As was said we can build more gathering posts as the day begins tomorrow and reassign workers.

I'll say wait on doing any emergency shifts for now, we should avoid them unless we're really in a bind.

Whatever plan we choose, we should build two normal tents minimum. That will be enough to house all the foals (until we get a foal shelter) and five adults. The medical tent would also be nice to have no matter what.
One sawmill should be enough to jumpstart wood production, and two gathering posts (one focused on coal and the other on wood/steel) would probably work just fine. Once we sign the extended shift law we can put all the resource production buildings and the workshop onto longer shifts to increase productivity. Once we get the materials we can build another sawmill or another gathering post.
In the future, once all the resources in the range of a gathering post are collected we can build a coal thumper near it, since it produces coal deposits that gathering posts can use. Dismantling gathering posts does give back most of the materials used, but I don't like wasting resources.
>>
>>38883086
[[You can absolutely make a custom plan if you want, any combination of those buildings are acceptable, in fact, you could build -none- of those buildings. Or you could build only a few of those buildings.

The biggest thing is that you have enough gathering piles that are close together for 3 gathering posts.

You could skip the posts all together and go straight for wood, but then you wouldn't be collecting any Coal or Steel. Gathering Posts are also more efficient for use of your workers, as each Post and Sawmill only need 10 ponies to man them. A medical tent needs 5 engineers.

Anyway...

Emergency Shifts are very hard on ponies, for sure, but they're more resilient than squishy humans. It depends more on the jobs you pick...

((On an amusing side note, I've been working on the Extreme Ultramarathon achievement, (100 days in Extreme Endurance mode in endless) and you can actually get-two- Emergency Shifts in without killing your workers or engineers. Once your first workshop is built, you man it immediately and get them researching sawmills, then put them on Emergency Shift. Advance Time to 1600, and then put one of the fully-staffed wood gathering groups on Emergency Shift. For some reason, the spacing out of time and having one of the gathering teams running an Emergency Shift at the same time as the Workshop will not cause the scripted death. Not only does it allow you to research Beacon super quickly, but you also get to build your gathering posts, sawmills, medical post, and two tents. Just make sure you save enough wood to immediately start researching the next Tech Level. Then, to keep too many people from getting sick, while the generator is running that night kick on the Overdrive for the extra heat, it will keep the sickness down, and then turn the generator off in the morning once 0500 comes around. Simple as.))

SO. What's the plan Captain? I seem some agreements here and there but what's the consensus?]]
>>
>>38884410
((Very nice, I'll save this for when I start grinding achievements for this game again, I think for base game I've got under a dozen left))
Looking at all our suggestions I'd say 3 normal tents, 2 gathering posts, 1 sawmill, and 1 medical tent is a good balance (that is if we have enough wood, maybe build 2 houses if not).
And we can maybe advance up to completing sawmill research.
Sound good?
>>
>>38884468
I still think the sawmill should be lower priority than tents.
>>
>>38884479
Works for me. So 2 gathering posts, 1 medical tent, then as many normal tents as we can build. How's that?
>>
>>38884468
>>38884479
>>38884511
[[Ok, so 2 Gathering Posts, 1 Medical Tent, and 4 housing Tents.

What resources do you want your Gathering Posts on? Coal/Coal/Steel, Coal/Coal/Wood, Wood/Wood/Steel are your options, pick two.]]

>>38884468
((As a proud Iron Savior and leader of the Golden Path, I wish you luck Captain.))
>>
>>38884542
Coal/Coal/Steel and Wood/Wood/Steel would give us two of each
>>
>>38884568

Third gathering post is the priority during the day and the remaining tents are the priority during the night.

You finalize your plans as the sun starts to dip, and you trot over to the Generator, humming to yourself. The temperature will dip soon, and the workshift will end. You'll need to signal the end of the day even as you finish planning what needs to be accomplished tonight. You mark out what needs to be built, asking a foal to 'mark out' each spot for you once you inform the workers of what needs to get done.

You hear the cheers of the Workshop as they get the Sawmill model working, and a few minutes later they step outside, looking tired but accomplished, stretching as they make their way over to you. Finally, you find the handle for the foghorn and yank on it, blowing low and loud to catch Everypony's attention. "FINISH YOUR LABORS MY LITTLE PONIES, THE WORK DAY IS UP!"

Right at 1800 your ponies arrive, hauling their cargo from the last bit of gathering before they all gather around you. A few squirm and murmur lowly to one another, and your ears pick up their whispers. "Why isn't the Generator on?" "A-aren't we going to have a place to lay inside?" "Wouldn't we freeze to death without the Generator being on?!"

You ignore their voices for the moment before passing out orders. "Tonight we've got some serious work before we can go to sleep, but if we work together I know we'll get it done in time! We need to build a Medical Tent- Fluttershy, I'll be taking you off the Workshop team to lead up the Medical Tent, and I'll need five more engineers working on gathering to volunteer to shift to the Workshop team and Medical. Pinkie, I need you to lead up building four housing tents."

"Only four! What about the rest of us?! Are you expecting us to freeze to death in the night Captain?!" One pony calls out, looking at you angerly before you motion them down with your wings. "The Generator will be running all night, I can assure you that nopony is going to freeze tonight, but we don't have the resources to house everyone just yet! Please be patient, I promise to house -everypony-!" Your placation makes the crowd calm but you press on anyway.

"We need those resources to make two Gathering Posts. I want them working as rapidly as possible to collect as much coal, steel, and wood from the supplies on the ground as possible. To that effect, Rarity, I need you to guide the ponies to the pile of Coal/Coal/Steel and Wood/Wood/Steel and make two Gathering Posts, and then walkways to each. Follow the outlines I stamped into the snow to avoid interfering with future building, having to take up the roads would be less than ideal." You order, the Fashionista nodding firmly before she starts off, quietly greeting her sister with a nose nuzzle as the filly trots off along side her.
>>
>>38884609
You stamp one hoof down, standing tall and flaring your wings fully like you remember seeing Celestia do on occasion when she's addressed ponies in the past. The sun just so happens to dip enough to sit right behind you, bathing you in it's golden light.

"Listen to me! We have accomplished so much this first day. Your drive, your spirit, your Hope is driving us forwards! Even now our Scouting Team is on their way to bring more of our families, our ponies, home to us now! I need you to keep Hope alive, and remember that we shall not bend! We shall not break! THE CITY WILL SURVIVE!"

"THE CITY WILL SURVIVE!" The Herd cheers back at you, stomping hooves in applause before they split off to their jobs, the Engineers splitting off for a moment as the fifteen ponies speak amongst one another silently before they all nod to one another, slapping hoofs and trading nuzzles, even a shy Fluttershy with Glimmer Dusk, who seems to have taken on the role of 'lead' Engineer amongst the Workshop ponies, as Fluttershy takes four ponies with her to assist with building the medical tent as the rest of the Engineers trot off to help building tents, the workers already laying out walkways.

"Hi Captain!"

You jerk out of your pose, flapping you wings rapidly in surprise before you're finally able to tuck them in as you're startled by Pinkie Pie, who giggles warmly at you.

"Pinkie! Please don't do that, you scared me!" You pout at her, the giggly mare giving you a hug of greeting.

"Aww, don't worry silly! I figured you just needed somepony to help shake you out of that gloom! We need our Captain to have a warm and happy heart, not a gloomy and wendigo-cold one!" She cheers. "So I brought you... this!"

You marvel at what the mare hoofs you, taking it gently in your own hooves. A singular sugar cookie, impossibly still warm as if it was baked only minutes ago. "P-pinkie..."

She shushes you, motioning for you to eat it. "Take it. Again, we need you warm and strong Captain! A warm heart will remember to take care of it's Ponies!" She says firmly, giving you a sad smile. "I learned that back home with Ma and Pa and Lime and Marble and..."

Her mane droops a bit and her smile falls. "... I don't think they would have left. Maude did, but they... they probably didn't leave the Rock Farm. We're stubborn, Rock Farmers." She says, gesturing with a single hoof. "So remember not to be so set and stubborn to not do what's best for everypony... ok?"

With that weird moment of unexpected wisdom, the Pink mare vanishes off into herd, to assist with building homes and preparing for tomorrow.

After all, Tomorrow is a another day.

[[Final Stats to be updated later, I have to go to work...]]

[[Time: Day 1, 1800
Supplies:
Enough Coal for 48 hours of operation
Just above zero wood
1/5ths of your capacity for steel
Enough Rations for your herd for three days.

Completed Buildings: Beacon, Workshop
Active building: 4 tents, 2 Gathering Posts, 1 Medical Tent

Active Scout teams: 1

Laws Passed; Emergency Shift

Book of Laws is closed for the next 2 hours

Workshop Research Complete: Beacon, Sawmill

Available Research:
Faster Gathering- better equipment for collecting things makes gathering faster
Coal Thumper- A magitek device that draws coal up from deep below the surface to be gathered by ponies.
Steelworks- this location was selected for it's two massive iron deposits. We'll need to build steelworks atop of them to make use of these deposits for The City.

Hothouse- Eventually we will need food. This building allows us to farm in the Frostlands.

Unfortunately due to power costs they cannot be utilized in homes]]
>>
>>38884710
I vote steelworks since the piles won't last forever.
>>
>>38884955
Me too
>>
>>38884955
That'll work, but for now I vote hothouse, right now we have 0 food production and our reserves will run out soon, especially since we have more ponies on the way.
Also right now we've got almost zero wood, we'll probably have to wait until a bit after we start the next day and get some more wood to start the next research (unless we cancel one of the buildings before it's built to get wood back).
The roadmap I've got in my head for our next researches would be Hothouse->Steelworks->1-2 coal/generator techs->next tech tier
We should be good for whatever order for coal and generator techs since we still have plenty of coal and lead time before temperature drop, we do need to start soonish though.

Let's also turn on the generator (duh).

Just to be sure do we currently have actual rations or do we have raw food that still needs to be cooked? (like in the game)
If we have only raw food we'll need to build a cookhouse during workday tomorrow or ponies might start eating raw food.

[[Current vote is 2 for Steelworks and 2 for Hothouses.

And turning on the Generator (duh)

We have actual rations, due to normal pony food not doing so well in the cold. The Rations are basically Lembas Bread/Waybread, made of a variety of fruit and veg, magically 'wrapped' by the Princesses and high-skill magi. Fresh Waybread can also last a long time if kept in cold storage, but loses much of it's flavor when done so. Waybread replaces 'Soup' in the Frostpony universe, as you can make a lot of it from very little. Haysoup is the other option, you can make much, much more of it but too much roughage can be rough on the digestive track and can lead to sickness.]]

[[The City awaits your decision Captain.

Also, while you're debating on Steelwork or Hothouses, debate on a name for The City. The current suggestion is New Ponyville.]]
>>
>>38886092
I vote steelworks. We've got food for 3 days, and we are only at the end of the first. Resource production is more important for our city's growth currently.
I'm the anon who suggested New Ponyville, so I don't have much else to add for the name.
>>
>>38886092
>>38886418
I still think hothouse should be next because steel is lower priority imo since we already have a good source for at least a few days and don't need much yet, also soon we won't have much labor to spare and working in sawmills might be better. But I'll still switch my vote over to steelworks.
We (barely) finished two techs today with an hour spare iirc, we probably can research both of them tomorrow as long as we can get the wood cost of the first research fast enough at the start of the day.
Even if we can't finish them both by day two, we should be able to finish them both early into day 3, food probably won't be a problem by then.
Given that, I'll switch over to steelworks to break the tie.

Unless anyone else comes up with a different name I think New Ponyville is fine. If anyone comes up with anything though I'll want to hear that before deciding.

You finish contemplating the pink mare's words as you see the first tents finished, along with the medical post, the medical engineering crew swiftly making their way inside, the foals being nudged into the tents as well by a wall-eyed Pegasus mare.

You see Glimmer Dusk trotting along and flag her down with a wing, and quickly explain your plan for tomorrow, going into making a Steelworks right away and following by getting Hothouses researched.

She hums quietly, glancing at the wood storage before nodding. "We'll be using up the last bit of wood in the pile for steelworks in the morning Captain but it will be done."

You nod and let her go as the day officially turns to night and with a small prayer and a throw of a switch... the Generator ROARS to life, your ponies cheering as their building tasks are complete, four tents now playing host to half of your ponies.

You smile. Everything is well.

The first Day is over.

New Ponyville will Survive.

[[End of Day 1. You may now assign another Law if you so desire.]]

Main laws I'm thinking now are either extended shifts or foal shelters. What's our current list of options?

[[Now that Day 1 has passed you have access to the full law tree.

In the Adaptation tree you have-

Extended Shifts
Waybread/Soup
Radical Treatment/Sustain Life
Cemetery/Enhanced Fertilizer
Arcade (replaces Fight Club)
Foal Labor/ Foal Shelters

Other Status:
You have no Wood come start of shifts in the morning (even if you start Extended shifts, the Workshop will que up the same time they start collecting wood, so you have 0 wood to start the day)
You have very little steel
You have enough coal for about two days (after reaching the morning)

You've built:
4x Tents (40/80 Total population)
1x Medical Post (5 of 15 Engineers)
2x Gathering Posts (20 of 45 workers)
1x Sawmill (10 of 45 workers)
1x Workshop (5 of 15 Engineers)
1x Beacon (1 Scout Team)

You have 15 workers and 5 Engineers to assign to unsheltered gathering in the morning.

If you want more details about a law, please ask and I shall give you the full description and effects it will have on New Ponyville.]]

You slept outside, with the rest of the Herd.

Some of them were pretty vocal about you not doing that, but you felt like it was the right thing to do. Solidary with your ponies. You are their Captain, so you need to prove to them (and maybe yourself a bit) that you have their needs in mind.

You stretch languish as you carefully and slowly chew through your Waybread, eyes closed as you savor the flavor. There's bits of Orange family Oranges and Apple Family Apples, and a second bite confirms that you're absolutely tasting Sweet Apple Acres apples and your heart aches.

It tastes like home.

You stuff down your urge to cry, knowing in your heart that you'll never see Ponyville again, but even as homesickness washes over you and you quietly dream of green fields, the sprawling apple orchard, and fluffy white clouds in the bluest of skies, you redouble your resolve and open your eyes, the sun just peeking into The Crater making them glint.

This will be home? Then you will -make it- home.

Your Herd is starting to awaken after a long night, and a few sniffle and a single cough is heard which immediately draws several eyes as two mares and a single stallion who shivers in misery are gently nudged and prodded into the Medical Tent by Fluttershy.

The Day is starting. Three sick from having to sleep outside next to the Generator wasn't terrible, and wouldn't bring down the overall production for today. You trot up to the Generator platform, and ring the bell.

You've been thinking and planning it out all night, even going into the Workshop on your own to check the blueprints for what you need, and smiled at having found the Foal Shelters. Long, warm schoolhouses that give your littlest ponies a safe place to play, learn, and study during the working hours. You ring the bell as your ponies start to move and call out, "HEAR YE, HEAR YE, A NEW LAW FOR THE CITY! I HEARBY ENACT THE FOAL SHELTER LAW, FROM OH-EIGHT-HUNDRED HOURS TO EIGHTTEEN HUNDRED HOURS EACH DAY ALL FOALS SHALL REPORT TO THEIR DESIGNATED FOAL SHELTER FOR SCHOOLING AND PLAY!"

A cheer rises amongst your ponies, many of the adults, particualrly the parents of said foals, looking brighter and more hopeful at the thought. "We'll build the Foal Shelter within the next two days, once we have enough resources. In the meantime, I will watch the foals during the working hours."

You check the time. 0530. A good two and a half hours before the workday starts. You quickly pass out work assignments for the day, and mention that unless a gathering post runs out of materials to collect or a sawmill runs out of materials to collect, those will be the permanent assignments for now.
>>
>>38889012
Let's think of something to do with the foals. Maybe something fun and simple but something that also is helpful towards the herd? Otherwise, let's just try our best to play teacher
>>
>>38889012
You motion the 20 unassigned ponies, including five engineers, and set the workers to continue gathering from the last woodpile too far away from the gathering post, hoping to strip it bare before the weather turns, and the engineers to collecting coal from one of the coal piles not yet connected to a gathering post as well.

After passing out orders, and greeting various ponies as they come up, you find yourself partially alone, watching as ponies each collect their own piece of waybread for their daily ration, before your eyes are drawn to a drooping, head-hanging mare.

Octavia Melody.

Your heart aches for the poor musician. She was well known and much beloved across a lot of Equestria, along with her partner and... some dared say, lover... the rather mysterious Pon-3. Better known to the residence of Ponyville as Vinyl Scratch. A walking, talking contradiction. In public, so loud and boisterous when interacting, completely silent if not mute when contemplating her music, and according to some of the gossips among the Ponyville mare circles, sweet and softspoken at home.

You met her a single time, and liked her.

She was among the first fatalities of the Frost, along with Sparkler Doo, who it appeared she had been attempting to drag out of the storm. They were two amongst many, and names and faces you remember fondly spin through your mind- an arrogant but slowly becoming more friendly magician, a kind hearted nurse who never gave up on anypony, a stern older mare who could never say no to her ponies...

The wails of distraught ponies echo in your ears even as you stare at Octavia. Alone in this World of Frost and Cold.

Even as your gaze is settled on Octavia, your attention is drawn away yet again, towards a bright pink mare with a smile as brittle as peanut brittle. Pinkie Pie is doing her best to try to keep spirits up but you can tell it's wearing the Element of Laughter down.

The talk last night bothered you quite a bit. The mare is strong, so strong, and has been keeping herself going and keeping everypony else going as well. So many times during the trip she would dart back into the line to push somepony ahead, to pull ponies to their feet and keep them moving, to say just the right thing to keep spirits high.

There's only so much joy to spread when death is behind every step and the end times are upon you. But maybe that's when you need joy and laughter the most.

You find yourself conflicted. Pinkie seems fine, but even from here you can see that her mane and tail aren't quite as... poofy as normal. Octavia is puttering along, step by step, but what could you possibly do to mend a broken heart?

How do you give Hope to the Hopeless?
>>
>>38889037
>>38889046
You contemplate that thought quietly, as the time ticks over to 0600. Two hours of time before the work shift begins and ponies get busy. How should you spend your time?

You look at the foals and hum quietly. They would be very helpful in trying to cheer up either pony. But whatever you're going to do, you're going to have to do it quickly.

You're cruel, man. Let's try and plan this out well.
So, I'd say we can try and make use of Pinkie's affinity for entertaining and throwing parties. Have her engage with the foals. Have the foals in turn show them how much they love her/she means to them, that might help with some good feels.
In the meantime, we should talk to tavi. I take it she didn't bring her instrument with her? How crafty are we? Or would we be able to ask someone to build a cello for her? I'd honestly be ok with sacrificing a little bit of wood. Sometimes sorrow has to be sung into the world, if you know what I mean.
Before you write your next post tho, OP, please let someone else weigh in on this. As you said, critical objective and I don't want to be the sole person to make or break this
>>
>>38889157
[[Believe me, I'm waiting.

A few details seeing as you asked so kindly-
I can't tell you exactly what happened to Octavia's Cello, that's for her to say, but no, there was no Cello brought in the supplies.

Guiding Ponies to interact with others is a totally valid thing you could do.

You only get two hours before the workshift starts to interact with ponies

You have roughly 4-6 hours (dependent on RNGsus) to interact with ponies after shift (0800-1800 each day), dependent on if there are things that need to be built that weren't able to be built during the day (ponies working at a actual workstation can't just be pulled off the job willy-nilly. A pony tending to, say, the Coal Mines or a Wall Drill can't just run back to help build something after all. They have jobs that they need to concentrate on after all!)

Each 'interaction', depending on how (you) all decide to interact, can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours per pony or group of ponies.

These interactions can also be used to bolster Hope or help mitigate Discontent if you speak to a group of ponies instead of individual ponies. But! Speaking to a group won't help the individuals too much.

In short, assuming you use about an hour per interaction, you have a guaranteed 4 interactions a day, with good RNG offering up to 6.

Unless, of course, you get Extended Shifts... and that time dissipates because you start working from the moment you all wake up.

And a good dice roll lets you get maybe two.

Hope these details help you... Captain.]]

Well anons we've made it to the hard part, knowledge of frostpunk won't help us here. Anyone reading feel free to weigh in, we'll need all the help we can get.

Agree with this >>38889157 , essentially we need to remind them of the things they love to do and help them start doing it again. They're in a very difficult situation but that doesn't mean they have to sacrifice everything to survive.

After figuring out the exact goal let's figure out how to accomplish it.
First step in my mind is to talk with both of their friends, whoever currently knows them best and who we think could help lift their spirits. Given the cost for interactions we should think about how we organize this carefully. Let's tell them our concerns and ask for their help.

My first pick for helping Pinkie are the ponies in the city that know her best and have helped her before, out of the ponies here i.i.r.c. that would be Rarity and Fluttershy. Also let's maybe find ponies that can help build new instruments/party equipment. Given that we were a ponyville resident before the frost we (might) have some other ideas for candidates to help Octavia and Pinkie.

Also looking beyond us wanting to save them just because, they both hold great value for the city. Keeping up ponies' spirits is one of our most important jobs, they're both perfect ponies to help with that (music and parties). And as mentioned before ponies that represent elements of harmony are very important too. We definitely shouldn't shy away from using some resources to help save them if we have to.

After discussing, I say that if there's a difference in opinion we should have a more formal vote to be sure we're really going with the majority, this is an important choice after all.
Any thoughts?

>>38889307
>>38889316
I've also gotta say great job on this CYOA OP, really enjoying it, really liking the world building and the writing you've done so far, I'm definitely hooked too.
My main issue with frostpunk was that there was a human cost to most decisions but you would never really feel it. The characters were all just a face and a randomly generated name on one of your many saves, you wouldn't ever consider cost outside of the hope/discontent bar. This changes all of that though, we've got one try, we're making decisions around characters we've known for years, we're going to have to really weigh the good of the individual against the city's survival. This was where I was hoping the adventure was going, I'm also excited to see where we end up (for good or ill), I'll be sure to stick around till the end.
>>
>>38889311
Let's remember from FiM that this'll probably be tough. There's a couple episodes where they had to try many different things before they were able to lift Pinkie's spirits, we'll just have to hope we can figure out something for each of them that will be an aid to their spirits. i.i.r.c. in the episode where Pinkie sucks at playing the yak instrument they actually did throw a party for Pinkie Pie but it didn't lift her spirits. My current idea takes from the episode where Pinkie helps out Cheese, Cheese had to be reminded what he loved to do. Right now they both don't have the will/aren't able to pursue anything they might enjoy. We can't change what happened to Pinkie or Octavia but we can hopefully help rekindle them through the things they love to do.

Anyone have any other specific ideas? For now getting a new instrument for Octavia (as was said) and having Pinkie throw a party for the foals is the best plan I can think of until we ask for some help.
>>
I suck at Frostpunk but I'm also really enjoying this CYOA.
>>38889311

For Octavia, maybe we could talk to an engineer working at the coal pile and ask if they could build a cello, or just an instrument in general? I don't know if we have the skill necessary to make anything like that ourself.
Pinkie is working very hard to keep everypony going. Even among the mane six, she is one of the last to give up in the bleakest of situations. I don't want to think about what will happen to the little hope our little ponies have left if Pinkie Pie stops being Pinkie Pie.
As fun as a party sounds, I'm really not sure if that's what Pinkie needs to cheer her up. She's been putting on a happy face for the entire journey, while she's probably worried sick about her family. Here:
>>38884637
Before we do the party stuff, we should talk with her one on one. Maybe all she needs is someone to lend an ear, or a shoulder to cry on. It can't be good to bottle all of those feelings up.

A party for the foals is a good idea though. Did we ever eat that sugar cookie Pinkie gave us? Maybe we could use it as a substitute for a cake.
>>
>>38889526
My idea of a party was less to just have fun and more to give an opportunity to show gratitude and haw much ponies around here care for her. Like a child trying to cook a meal for their mom on mother's day. As for the instrument, it'd probably need somebody with a relevant skill and using the workshop for a while.
>>
>>38889526
Good points, that all makes more sense for us to do next. I still think no matter what we decide it would be a good idea to get some help from ponies that can assist us.

>>38889629
I was just thinking that if we're going to do an event or something maybe we should try to do something that's for all the ponies in the city. They've all lost family and friends and are dealing with grief, if we're doing a city-wide event maybe we shouldn't give special treatment to one or two ponies and instead find something for all of them. Building a memorial or something similar that all the residents can contribute to might be a good idea (would probably go under cemetery law, so unfortunately we would have to wait a while). Still, I think either this or an event to support and appreciate Pinkie might work for our current problem, for the latter option the question would be what else we could do for Octavia.
>>
[[So Captain, have you come to a decision then? I need firm answers here]]

I am surprised that everyone is dead, timezones are weird.
Personally, I recommend the following course of action, anons agree or disagree with me:
1.) We'll sent the foals out to engage with pinkie pie. Keep her entertained, have them show her how much she means to the kiddos
2.) Let's see if we can find an engineer that might be able to construct a cello for tavi in a somewhat quick time.
3.) Find some of pinkie's friends, ask them for help with the party mare.
4.) Once we have the cello (if it won't take too long, without otherwise) we'll talk to tavi and listen to her woes. With the cello we can encourage her to let her emotions soar as a musician would do

You narrow your eyes a bit and take a short breath before you notice Applebloom, Scootaloo, and Sweetie Belle nearby. "Oh Girls! Could I speak with you a moment?" You call, trotting over to the trio.

You notice that Silver Spoon is actively sitting with the group now too, being supported by Scootaloo and Applebloom. "Wh- oh, hi Captain." Scootaloo says, looking up at you with a grin. "Is Rainbow Dash back yet?! She's so fast, I bet she's already found the rest of the Expedition!"

You chuckle at the filly's fangirling over her pseudo-sister. "No, I haven't heard from the Scouts yet Scootaloo, but I'm keeping my dragonfire lighter on me, so the moment they have news I'll know." You say, motioning to a large silver cylinder that's hanging off your belt. Made by the Princess of Friendship herself with the help of her Number 1 Assistant, Spike Sparkle, they actively bottled Spike's dragonfire to create one of the most powerful tools that you have at your disposal. Instant point-to-point communications by utilizing the special magical flame Spike developed due to the nature of his hatching.

Spike's special magical fire allows him to send 'flamed' messages from one place to another with unerring accuracy within seconds. Princess Celestia and other Alicorn-level power magi can copy the spell directly, but everypony else needs some help, which led to Princess Sparkle coming up with these highly innovative lighters. The flames themselves do not burn, but will quickly eat up any message scroll held to it and send it along rapidly for near-instantiations delivery. Unfortunately, these highly useful tools need to be paired in order for them to work and exhaust Spike to make, you only have three pairs. One of which you gave directly to Starlight Glimmer before she, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and the rest of Scout Team 1 departed.

"Awwww... ok..." Scootaloo sighs, hanging her head a bit. You give her an apologetic smile. "That being said, do you think I could count on you girls and the other colts and fillies to do something very important for me?"

The four fillies perk up at your request, and Sweetie Belle tilts her head, her squeaky voice cracking just a little. "A important task? For the City!"

"Naw, fer New Ponyville Sweetie!" Applebloom chimes in. You smile. "Yes, a task for New Ponyville."

You look over at Pinkie Pie, and the strained smile, and quietly pray to Epona that this is the right decision. "Could you girls spend some time with Pinkie Pie? I think she needs some company. I know it doesn't sound like a lot but-"

"She looks like she's really hurting, like she's losing Hope."

You freeze up, as does Sweetie, Scoots and Applebloom as you look at Silver Spoon, who curls in a bit nervously at the sudden attention. "S-she looks like how I was feeling before you h-hugged me yesterday C-captain."
>>
>>38892427
You blink before giving the filly a soft, warm smile and lean down, nuzzling her. "Yes, exactly. I think someponies need to give Pinkie a big cheering up before the workshift starts. Bolster her spirits and give her a reason to be Hopeful again... or at least bolster her enough so that I can speak with her personally later. Would you all be willing to keep her company?"

"Of course Captain! You can count on us!" Applebloom boasts, hopping to her hooves and saluting seriously as she and the two other Crusaders come together and slap hooves. "Cutie Mark Crusader Hope Bolsters, Yay!"

The trio giggle as they nudge Silver to her hooves. "Come on Silver, you're gonna be critical to helpin' Operation: Warm Pie!"

"Ww-waaaaaait!"

The fillies pick up the startled ex-bully and take off, chattering away rapidly as they go to collect the rest of the foals as you feel the sweat drip down the back of your neck. Dear Epona what have you done...

The amount of collateral damage those three could cause...

The shiver that runs down your spine has nothing to do with the cold as you do your best to ignore the fact that you might have possibly just doomed the city by unleashing those three to lead the rest of the foals in cheering Pinkie up, and trot off to see if you can speak with Glimmer Dusk.

The gorgeous purple-grey-and-black fur and maned unicorn is laying primly on a blanket, nuzzling a startlingly pink-and-blue pegasus stallion that is much smaller than her. Now that you think about it, you and Glimmer Dusk are the largest of the ponies here, Glimmer being roughly head-and-shoulders taller than most, with you being only a head taller, which makes the small pegasus stallion look that much smaller next to her.

The two are nuzzling and cuddling quietly, sharing a single piece of waybread and whispering sweet nothings to one another. You smile warmly at the sight and really regret breaking up the clearly romantic moment, but needs must, and you've got more ponies to look after. "Glimmer? I'm sorry to interrupt you, but I have a question for you if you have time."

The unicorn hums and lifts her head, looking at you questioningly before the stallion nods at you. "Yo Captain. Don't worry Duskie, it's probably important, I'll be right here keeping the blanket warm till you get back." He says, winking at the unicorn who giggles before kissing the stallion and standing.

You gesture to a slightly more private spot, scanning the Herd till you see Octavia, who is slowly gnawing on a small piece of Waybread, head hung low.

"Yes Captain? What could I do for you? I though we had already laid out our plans for research today." She asks, tilting her head.

"Glimmer, do you know if any of the engineers know how to make a Cello?" You ask, no time to waste.

"A cello?" She says, blinking in shock as she stands back a bit. "What an odd request Captain. Do we really have the supplies for such a luxury?"

"Yes, no, maybe? It's important."
>>
>>38892460
Glimmer Dusk is not a stupid mare, and easily tracks your gaze as her eyes sadden as she sees who you're looking at. "... I see. I will inquire amongst the other Engineers. I have not little skill Captain, but I've never built much larger than a lunch-box guitar."

You let out a quiet sigh of relief. "How quickly do you think we'll be able to build one?"

Glimmer frowns, humming quietly. "For what you're looking for? A day. We could have one ready for you at the end of shift Captain, but we'll need Workshop space to do it and most likely five engineers to complete it to the quality it will need to have to properly last in this cold and to properly play."

You wince. A whole workshop down for a entire day, along with five engineers focusing on nothing but making a single instrument? That could be insanely costly. And you only have the one workshop built in the first place! You can't sacrifice research right now, the mild weather will only last for so long...

"I see. Thank you Glimmer Dusk. Please give Weather Front my greetings and apologies for interrupting your breakfast. I'll send along a message when I want the... special project to get into production." You say, nodding to the taller mare who nods back graciously before taking her leave with a quiet 'good day' and returning to her stallion who greets her with a kiss before the two go back to cuddling quietly.

You glance down at the time, biting your lower lip thoughtfully. You want to speak with the other Elements of Harmony, and you also want to speak with Octavia, especially as you don't have the Cello to possibly bolster her spirits, you need to keep her from... sleepwalking into a suicide.

Both of these tasks would take up the last hour of your day. So which is more important? Trying to rally the rest of the EoH around one of their own and pull Fluttershy away from her Patients in the Medical Tent, or speaking directly to Octavia?

[Status Unchanged, it is now 0700. One Hour of Free Time remains]
>>
>>38892486
Well, Pinkie isn't alone right now. Tavi is. You guys agree?
>>
>>38892486
Well, at least we know making the Cello is possible. It looks like until we get some more infrastructure we won't be able to spare the research time. A shame, but maybe we can do something else for her.
>>38892529
We should definitely talk to Octavia.
>>
>>38892529
>>38892654
You make your way towards the drooping Earth Pony mare, carefully brushing off your coat even as you luxuriate in the warmth of the Generator.

Fluttershy really needs to stay focused on looking after the sick ponies. You are sure they aren't the first and won't be the last, but with AJ and Dash gone, Rarity, Pinkie, and Fluttershy are the faces of the EoH here in New Ponyville. The foals can look after Pinkie for now. Maybe after shift you can ask a Engineer to cover for Fluttershy and talk to Pinkie or something, but for now, there's a more critical conversation to be had.

You slowly walk up to Octavia, making sure to make a decent amount of noise at to not startle the exhausted looking mare, who still jerks a bit all the same as she takes notice of you, blinking blearily a few times before hanging her head a bit, eyes clouded over and dull.

"Oh... 'ello Captain." She greets in that smooth accent of hers as you step closer before sitting down next to the grey-on-grey pony. "What do I owe the pleasure?"

I've been imagining the Captain as having a gray coat and a light pink mane. Maybe hazel eyes? Since she's tall and hangs around foals a lot, I get almost a motherly sort of feel to how she does things, so she looks like a mom in my head. Kind of like a pseudo-celestia I guess.

"Octavia. May I join you?" You greet quietly, your voice smooth even as internally you squirm awkwardly, quietly panicking for how to help this tired... no, exhausted looking mare. On a whim, you try to emulate one of the calmest, most in-control ponies you can think of, Princess Celestia, and after a moment, you pull your hood and goggles off, letting your pink mane banner in the morning wind for a moment, shaking it out a bit.

"Oh, I... ah, no, please, feel free." Octavia stammers before gesturing next to her on the cleared plank of wood. Somewhere dry to sit. Who would have thought that would be a luxury one day.

"Thank you." You settle down, pulling out your partially finished waybread and taking a small bite, sighing wistfully as the flavors bring it all back again. "... Yes, I know what you mean." Octavia says quietly as she looks at you, and you realize she's been watching your expression and reaction to eating your waybread, making you blush a bit. Octavia is a Ponyville Resident as well... she most likely is feeling the same nostalgia with every bite.

"I can only hope those Zapp Apple seeds for the Hot House will work how the Engineers said they will." You sigh, looking at your waybread sadly. "It'll be one of the last crops from home that'll still be around..." You look up at the sky, letting a bit of your own despair leak through for Octavia to see. "I remember how much it hurt watching the Apple Orchard die... I don't think I've ever seen Big Mac cry before that day..."

The screams and wails of Despairing, Hurting ponies echo loudly in your head again as you let it hang a bit before you turn back to Octavia, seeing her similarly lost before you reach out a wing and softly hug the other mare, who startles at the contact, blinking at you for a moment before leaning in, eyes clouded over with memories.

"... my Vinyl was so strong. It was..."

She stops, and she seems to go... internal. She doesn't speak anymore, she does lean into you and hug you tightly, shaking softly as the memories assault her.

The time passes quickly, you don't want to interrupt her internal thoughts as you simply hug her and rub her back as she slowly comes back to herself, blinking her eyes rapidly as they sting from tears that have already ran out.

"... Thank you, Captain. For being here." She says lowly. "We shall... have to do our best today. For New Ponyville."

You blink at her, and a thought passes through your head.

[[Critical Objective Update: Octavia is clearly despondent and exhausted. As Captain, you can order ponies to rest, and if you think she's 'sick', then she has to go to the Medical Tent to get checked up. This will most likely upset ponies who think she's getting preferential treatment, and the mare herself might argue and fight against it. You could also say nothing and let her go to work. She's on the gathering team, so the chances of her getting hurt or sick are rather low, but there's still a chance.]]
>>

I vote to let her go to work. No reason to keep her from doing her best for the city.

"Absolutely." You say, giving Octavia another gentle squeeze. "You're part of the Gathering Post team, correct?"

"Yes Ma'am. I should get to my post." The mare says softly before she gets up and steps away. "We won't let you down."

"It's not me anypony should be concerned with." You say modestly. "It's all of us. We are all that is keeping New Ponyville alive after all."

She half-smiles, looking a bit brighter before she trots off and you get to your hooves. It's time to start the workshift. A glance over at the foals and Pinkie shows the Element of Laughter looking a bit more cheerful if still tired, and you reaffirm your desire to talk to her after shift as you step up to the Generator and locate the foghorn, pulling the lever to blow it loud and clear across the Crater.

"GET TO WORK! MOVE PONIES, NEW PONYVILLE DEPENDS ON US!" You call, loud and clear as your ponies cheer back to you.

"FOR NEW PONYVILLE!"

Even the foals get involved, pumping little hooves in the air as you trot down from the Generator and stretch your wings again, marveling at the warmth you can feel in your feathers before you greet the foals again.

"Cap'n!" Appleblom reports with all the seriousness of the Solar Guard, saluting proudly as she and the rest of the Crusaders form up in front of you, Silver Spoon in tow, who rolls her eyes but goes along with it, snapping a salute as Sweetie and Scootaloo do. "Ah'm pleased as punch to report oper... opra... oprah-ray-tion 'Hope Bolster' wuz successful!"

You nod seriously, saluting back. "Excellent work Crusaders, I knew I could count on you. At ease." The foals all giggle and relax, and you smile at the group. "Alright children, what's the plan? We've got about five hours before I need to check in with the Engineering group again. Any ideas what we should do with our time?"

"..." You blink as the foals all stare at you before grinning widely, when Applebloom darts forwards... and taps your chest. "TAG! You're it!"

The foals squeal and giggle as they all scatter in twos and threes, zipping away as you squawk in protest before 'galloping' after them at a easy jog, giggling to yourself.

Hmm, who to chase first, who to chase first... ah, there they are! You grin at the adorable lil' piebald earthpony colt and his lil' unicorn fillyfriend. The two are giggling madly as they zip through the snow, darting past the woodcrates pile where the workers laugh as you chase after, a wall-eyed pegasus mare giggling sweetly. "Run Muffin, run! The Captain's gonna get ya!" She calls out lovingly before returning to work.

Ah, Missus Doo, so that makes this little filly Dinky, and her friend must be Pipsqueak.

The workers cheers and teasing calls fall behind as you race through the snow, before the deeper snow finally slows and trips up the two foals and you're able to make a 'diving' tag and slide across the snow, snagging the foals gently and tickling them. "Gotcha!"

"C-caaaaptain!" Dinky giggles, kicking her little hooves as Pip laughs.

"You're being pressganged my little ponies! You're both it, along with me!" You tease with a grin. "We've got to get the rest of our crew together!"

The giggling colt and filly salute as you let them go. "Cam on' cap'n! We should return to th' Generator n' track the others from there!" Pip says, bouncing in place excitedly.

You grin at Pip and Dinky, and start your light jog back towards the Generator, Pip and Dinky just ahead of you, and glance around as you try to spot a new group of foals... before you spot 'em and take off with a grin, Pip and Dinky calling out cute little war cries as they run at your heels.

The next group cries out in surprise and sprints away, laughing all the while as you chase 'em around in the snow, before a snowball cuts off your chase after you've tagged two of the three.

"Cutie Mark Crusader Snowball Warriors, yeah!"

Suddenly you're being assaulted by snowballs hurled by the CMC and Silver Spoon, who makes snowballs as fast as Applebloom can throw them which is surprisingly fast as Scootaloo attempts to hit you with snowballs made by Sweetie.

Dinky and Pip start making snowballs and throwing them back at the CMC as they hijack your game. "For the Captain!" "For New Ponyville!"

Looks like you're going back to a snowball fight.

You flare out a wing like a shield. It's not like the foals throw that hard anyway, though you are a little wary of Applebloom as you look at Dinky and Pipsqueak. "Dinky, you and I are going to distract the girls and keep slinging snowballs. Pip." You look to the small gentlecolt who salutes you. "Sneak around and flank 'em, get up close and then tag 'em before they realize you're there."

"Ye'm, Cap'n!" Pip squeaks out before dashing off into the snow. You pop up and start slinging snowballs with your wings, laughing wildly as your mane banners in the wind, the pink shining brightly in the sunlight as you make snowballs and then launch them with your wings as Dinky does her best to fire snowball after snowball with her horn.

"Surrender CMC! You shall not escape me!" You cry out, leading to the girls focusing in on you as they call back. "Ne'er!" Applebloom returns, a snowball in her mouth for some reason? You watch as she spits it out into the air, turns, and bucks it, making it whip past your head.

Yikes.

You wing a snowball back and smack her in the flank, making her yelp as the girls double-down on trying to get you before you see Pip zip by... and pull a slightly less than gentlecoltly maneuver, tagging all four of the girls in the flank. That being said, you're aware that's really the only way to tag them and Pip is too young to really consider that. "Tag! You're also It!"

The girls complain but accept their loss, and you gather your team together to plan out getting the other foals. "Ooh, I have an idea Missus Captain Ma'am!"

Sweetie Belle looks rather excited as she lays out a plan, which would take more time and isn't perfect, but sounds safe, only for Scootaloo to scoff. "Yeah sure, that'll work, but here's a plan with some daring!"

Scootaloo's plan is quite good, but a bit... dangerous, which you've come to expect of anything from the CMC, and you honestly thing you're just about guarenteed to get all the foals.

So, what next?

[Scootaloo's Plan or Sweetie Belle's Plan?

You think it over before nodding at Sweetie Belle. "Alright, we're going with Sweetie's plan."

The foals nod in agreement and Scootaloo pouts at you. "Now Scootaloo, I liked your plan to, a guaranteed chance of catching everypony is great. But we have a major problem- New Ponyville is still very, well, new. If too many ponies get sick or hurt, or somepony gets seriously injured, we don't have a way to care for them yet. We have to play it safe for now, ok?"

Scootaloo sighs despondently and kicks a hoof. "Fiiiiiiiiine. We'll do it Sweetie's way." She grumbles, perking up as her friends giggle and hug her.

"Ok colts and fillies, gather 'round, here's how we'll play it out..." You declare, your co-conspirators giggling and whispering to one another as you lay out how you will accomplish Sweetie's plan...

----

"The Captain sure is taking a while."
"Duh, she's chasin' the Crusaders! Scootaloo musta done somethin' dum again."
"I dunno guys... I gotta feeling they're plannin' something."
"You're always feeling that way Skeedaddle..."

They have no idea that you're sneaking up on them, and you can't help but grin. "NOW GIRLS!"

The collective of foals yelp at your yell as they whirl around and dash away, you charging in behind them, with the CMC on either side of you. The plan is simple- none of the foals want to run too close to the Gathering Posts or bother the big ponies so they've been romping in fairly close to the Generator. That doesn't seem to be changing, so you've set a two-pronged ambush. You and the CMC chase the foals down, while the rest of the foals you've already tagged hide in the snow before they pounce, tagging the rest of the foals when they get close.

You run and run and run to the ambush point, aaaaand...

"NOW!" Pipsqueak calls out as he bursts out of the snow, tackling Skeedaddle, the wild-maned earthpony yelping in surprise as he's driven into the snow.

"AMBUSH!"

The foals try to skid to a stop but it's too late! Your flanking force cheers and lets out a battlecry as they burst from the snow and tag the rest of the foals, leading to everypony cheering and a pouting Wind Sprint huffing at losing at a sport.

"Alright Captain, you win." She pouts at you. "But I'll win next time!"

"Oh my, but you all had such fun." Fluttershy cheers quietly, drawing everypony's attention as she steps out from the medical tent. "I'm sure you're all tired and a little cold. Would anypony like some tea or hot chocolate?"

This gather's all the foals attentions and soon they're crowding around Futtershy, who blushes and flinches a little at the attention but stands strong again before giving you a smile over the foal's heads and gestures to her stash of teas and hot chocolates in offering.

You roll your eyes but smile warmly as you settle down, surrounded by the herd of foals who chatter away happily, finally acting with life and energy. You breath warmly and let out a pleased sigh.

"Here you go Captain, be careful, I just brewed it so it's quite hot." Futtershy says quietly as she offers you a cup and saucer. "Thank you Fluttershy." You smile at the easily-spooked pegasus mare, who dimples at you before she goes back to offering hot chocolate to the foals, and tea to a few of the ones who asked... Applebloom, Sweetie Belle and Silver Spoon among them?

You look at Applebloom questioningly and she just gives you a teasing grin. "Apple tea." She says simply, and you laugh quietly. "Isn't that just Apple Cider without the extra effort? Just putting some mashed up apples into a teapot?"

"As mah brother would say- Eeeyup!"

You both share a giggle as you gently blow on your tea before sipping it before blinking as you feel the tube on your hip heat up for a moment before a scroll manifests before you in a gout of green fire. "Ah, the scout team is reporting." You say with a pleased grin, the foals chattering excitedly at seeing the message as you unfurl it and scan it with a hum.

~Captain: We have found them! We enter the camp, appearing out of the driving snow. We were welcomed: "Thank Epona you found us! We had been wandering for days until we couldn't go on any longer. Soon we'd begin to starve."

The party has suffered but there are 3 Foals, 10 Engineers and 22 workers at the Camp. What would you have us do?~

The message ends there with a picture of some cheering ponies hugging Rainbow Dash and Starlight Glimmer, who looks rather shocked at the warm reception.

You pull your dragon lighter and your inkwell pen, humming quietly as you uncap it. How should you respond?

[What should your scouts do with the Lost Expedition members?]

You scribble out your response. "Excellent work, return to New Ponyville. Lets get our ponies home, post-haste." You seal it, and then flick open the lighter before depressing the flint lighter, making the foals coo as it sparks to life before you hold the now sealed scroll over it and send it whisking away to Scout Team 1.

"Excellent. Excuse me, please enjoy your hot chocolate, I need to speak with the Engineers." You say to the foals, smiling as you step out of the little herd and trot into the workshop where the Engineers are brohoofing and otherwise looking pleased, if a little tired. Glimmer Dusk trots up to you, a smirk on her face. "Captain. The steelworks is ready for you whenever you want to begin building them. You wanted us to begin work on the Hothouses next as you told us this morning, yes, or do you have a new plan in mind?"

[[STATUS:

Scout Team 1 Returning to New Ponyville with 40 ponies in tow.

Steelworks Research Complete

By the end of the day you will have collected 100 wood assuming no new injuries or sickness
You will have collected enough coal to continue generator operation for about three days (including coal burnt during the day)
You will have about 40 steel.

3/45 workers are recovering in medical. With boost applied sickness should be cured in 13 hours.

The Book of Laws is now open. Current Laws available:
Extended Shifts
Waybread/Soup
Radical Treatment/Sustain Life
Cemetery/Enhanced Fertilizer
Arcade (replaces Fight Club)
Engineer Apprentices/Medic Apprentices

It is currently 1300. Half of the workday is complete. What would you like to do Captain?

((Hang tough guys, I know the starting days are rough but it takes time to build a city.))]]
>>
>>38911709
When should the scouts return with the survivors?
>>
>>38911709
I think hothouse research is still good for now, after we research that we'll have all basic resource production covered except for coal.

Given that we've got plenty of coal for now I'd move workers around if we can so we can produce as much wood as possible for the rest of the day.
We'll soon need many more tents (10 I think), more work buildings, and more research too, for all wood will be the main bottleneck. There's the foal shelter also, but let's build that after workday on day 3 so we'll still build it in time but have wood to build more important things tonight.

For the next law I pick engineer apprentices, we could do arcade but that would be another thing we would have to build soon, we've got enough of a resource load for now.
>>
>>38912194
There is also the cello project.
>>

>>
>>38911709
Can I get a description what the laws mean/do? Hard to deccide with just the names.
Ones joined by / are mutually exclusive I take it?
>>38912194
Hothouse. We need to make sure our food won't run out. With another 40 ponies we'll also have to get to work to build proper housing soon, wood production is the key here I guess.
What do we need resource wise for our buildings anyways?
>>38912223
Well, we ARE getting 10 more engineers we can mayhaps put on the job. Heck, luck might give us an engineer that worked on instruments before, who knows.
>>
>>38912573
Yes those laws are mutually exclusive.

>>38912223
That'll take a workshop lots of wood and a large portion of the day correct? Maybe we could build a second workshop tonight so we can get started tomorrow without sacrificing too much research, or maybe build that tomorrow since wood is so low right now. Speaking of the cello project reminded me that we need to check on Pinkie, let's remember to do that after workshift.
>>
>>38913348
First we need to talk to the other elements how to help ponka
>>
>>38913432
Agreed.

Just to be clear I was suggesting that for the rest of the day we move all working ponies to wood production related tasks except for the engineers in the medical post and the workshop. Sound good?
>>
>>38913488
sure I guess
>>
>>38912573
[[Sure.
Extended Shifts - Enables the Captain to set the work shift begins at 0600 and ends at 2200. This can be set per workcenter. Each workplace working on Extended Shift will increase Discontent and possibly will remove your ability to interact with ponies before and after shift.

Waybread/Soup - Waybread is a easy to make Ration that stores well and can be made in mass quantities... but it's not a real meal, no matter how well it keeps you fed. (The Cookhouse can make Waybread instead of meals, at the cost of 2 Raw Food to 5 Rations. Waybread over extended periods of time will cause discontent.) / Soup is a easy way to make large amounts of food quickly, but it can cause stomach pain due to not having any roughage to assist with eating it. (The Cookhouse can make Soup instead of meals, at the cost of 2 Raw Food to 6 Rations. Soup can make ponies Sick and passing the law will cause discontent.)

Radical Treatment/Sustain Life - Radical Treatment: The Medical Posts are not rated to treat Grievous Injuries or Sickness, such as Frostbite or Wendigo Inflicted wounds, but we have the equipment if needed. Doctors will perform Radical Treatment to treat the Gravely Ill, with a 35% chance of that treatment ending in an Amputation. This law will drain hope and cause discontent / Sustain Life: Medical Posts were never rated to treat Grievous Injuries or Sicknesses, but we can at least keep them alive. Gravely Ill will be kept in beds at the Medical Post to keep them alive till we can treat them. (Each manned Medical Post can hold at most 5 patients currently.) This law will cause discontent.

Cemetery/Enhanced Fertilizer - Cemetery: Our Dead should be honored and buried as it should be. Establish a Cemetery to properly bury ponies who die. (Permanently half the hope-loss from ponies dying. Prevents sickness from unburied bodies. Raises Hope when passed and a Cemetery is established. 1 Cemetery per city.) / Enhanced Fetilizer: It's a well established fact that the magic inside ponies can bolster crop growth and the nutritional value of those crops. Earth Pony families that revolve around farming know this fact well, and commonly bury their dead with their fields. This fact does discomfort ponies not in the know. We'll bury our dead in the Hothouses to increase crop production. (Increase Raw Food production in Hot Houses. Prevents sickness from unburied bodies. Harshly lowers Hope and raises Discontent when passed.)

Arcade (replaces Fight Club) - Establish Arcades for your Ponies. Give them something else to do during their off time. Many games are very well beloved amongst ponies and the technology to make them is easy to copy and survived the trip to New Ponyville. (Arcades near tents will lower discontent for all that live in the radius of the Arcade, giving your ponies something to do in their off time to help relax.)
>>
>>38914124

Engineer Apprentices/Medic Apprentices: Apprenticeship- The Foals are being taught and have a safe place to stay in the Foal Shelters. To further their education, perhaps we should apprentice them to the Engineers or the Medics. (If all Foals in the city have a place in a Foal Shelter, they will provide a extra 10% productivity to Workshops or Medical Facilities depending on if Engineer or Medic Apprentice is signed.)

[[Honestly the only way you could possibly speed wood collection up any further would be to build another Sawmill. Just saying.

So to confirm- you want to pass the Engineer Apprentices Law Captain?]]
>>
>>38914126
So they'll be here at 5 am? So we can wait until tomorrow to make tents for them.

>>38914182
I agree with engineer since it would allow us to go through the tech tree quicker and enhance the medical facilities. However, we're going to need to get our food straightened out tomorrow and a production boosting law feels better to me. Especially considering that we will need 2 shelters before apprenticeships are of any use.
>>
[[On a side note if you're interested in Frostpunk the Game of the Year edition which includes all the DLC is on sale right now. So this is a great time to get it (and weirdly coincides with me making this CYOA.)]]
>>
>>38914266
So you're thinking extended shifts? That's really the only other production boosting law available. Honestly I think that's a good choice too since we need two foal shelters for the engineer apprentices to matter, we won't be able to build two for a good bit longer. The extra shift time could be very useful for wood production.
I'm fine with either choice, I'll say my vote is the same as the next reply so we can expedite this decision.

>>38914206
I see, I thought we had some ponies working a coal pile but I'm pretty sure I was wrong. Let's wait on building anything until the end of the day so we don't waste work hours.

Thanks for the news, I had been waiting for a sale on the DLCs for a while.
>>

[[Checked, and as a quick reminder, because you really need to keep it in mind because it's a big deal and not like in the game:

Those extra hours that you can spend talking to ponies can be a very big deal™ and having -any- workspace on Extended Shift can (and most likely will, high odds on the dice roll) prevent you from spending time with your ponies before and after work. Guaranteed to not get to spend any time with them at the start of the day, low chance of spending time with them at the end of the day.

(In short: Extended Shifts is OP as fuck so I'm slapping it with a heavy nerf and a very firm 'this is really, really good, but you use it at the wrong time and there is a chance you'll flat out miss and or fail a Critical Objective.)

I'm not saying you shouldn't. Hell, it is still really, really powerful and very useful. I'm just saying be careful what you wish for.

Also you guys have a lot more buying power than you think. The amount of wood and steel ya'll are getting today will be enough to house all of your ponies currently here and build several other buildings, and I'll also agree that you won't need to worry about housing anypony else beyond the 80* currently in New Ponyville till tomorrow night.

You also currently have 5 engineers just kickin' around doing nothing beyond helping gather. Another Medical Post, or another workshop (heck, two workshops and a Medical Post) would seriously boost your medical capabilities and bolster your research time and give you some space left over for making a cello or something.

At this point I'm going to recommend you all take a breath and relax a bit. You've started super strong and you're at a really good point already. Take your time and keep rolling, you've got three more days before the temperature shifts and so far things are proceeding apace.]]
>>
>>38914789
If we do extended shifts now, we could squeeze out another 2 hours of work, but the laws would also open up tomorrow before the extended shift schedule starts so we could give them a long night to do a lot of building and then start ramping up the workload. As for my complaint, I forgot that the QM uses their own timetable for the laws, so we won't have the day and a half wait that apprenticeships cause in the game.
>>
>>38914817
Could we take a page from last autumn and have two groups split the shift?
>>
>>38914852
[[No. It's extremely cold at night and there are other dangers lurking in the Frostlands that are best left undisturbed during the nighttime hours.]]
>>
>>38914860
I was just thinking that by splitting an extended shift in half we'd get the same output while doubling the workforce size and halving the individual strain down to a bit under a 9 to 5 job.
>>
>>38914870
[[Maybe, but it brings up a mess of logistic issues that we really aren't equipped to deal with.

Good thinking Anon, and I do like the idea, but with the way everything is written to this point in time I don't have a way to implement it properly. If you all really push for it, maybe?

Or we could rewrite the Extended Shifts law for it. It would still end up preventing you from spending time with your ponies. After all, you're needed to oversee the work crews. The main point is that the trade off is 'you don't get the time you would have otherwise to try to resolve problems in the city because you need to keep the industry running'.]]
>>
>>38914817
I'll vote for extended shifts since, just like emergency, it's useful to have the option, but we don't have to actually use it.
>>
>>38914817
>The amount of wood and steel ya'll are getting today will be enough to house all of your ponies currently here and build several other buildings
>At this point I'm going to recommend you all take a breath and relax a bit
Gotcha, guess I was being overly worried about the wood situation since we'll be able to build so much. In that case I vote engineer apprentices next. We should get extended shifts eventually so we can use it as a last resort but for now we're good.

>>38914822
If we do choose extended shifts we definitely shouldn't use it today, we've got two unfulfilled critical objectives that we could fail if we use it, all for very little gain since we've got plenty of resources/time for now.
>>
>>38914870
>>38914922
So that would let us essentially distribute the time of an extended shift across more ponies.
Ex) workshop active 14 hours total, 2 shifts, each shift works 7 hours, 10 ponies work there in total.
This could be neat, but really I think it's too big a headache to put in the quest for what it's worth. We do distribute the shift and allow the building to be active longer in total, but at a very high cost in total workers as compared to just having multiple of the same building. It would be useful for workshops/expensive buildings but not overly so. (all that assumes we aren't allowed to have ponies working outside of the usual working time, which is the case going off of >>38914860. If we could do that, then we could organize a group for night watch, we could have buildings operating 24/7. This would be broken, we would need way fewer total work buildings for the same output and could exploit the infinite resource sources later in the game tremendously).
Overall it is a neat idea, I just don't think it's worth the effort to put in the quest.
>>
>>38914206
So, what law are we choosing? My vote's for engineer apprentices.
>>
Even though I'm itching to do it, let's hold off on signing extended shift. We're doing just fine without it. I vote for engineer apprentices.
>>
[[Sorry for vanishing like that folks, when you're Military sometimes you don't get a choice when you have time to post or not]]

You nod firmly to Glimmer. "Yes, we're continuing with the plan so that we can get those Hothouses built later. Your team is doing an excellent job and ten more engineers are currently on their way to New Ponyville with our scouts."

Glimmer Dusk sighs in relief. "That is excellent news Captain. If you build two more Workshops we could seriously increase production."

"I have more good news. As of today I am enacting the Engineer Apprenticeship law." You says with a nod, and Glimmer grins brightly at that. "That -is- good news, even if not quite helpful to us this second as we do not have a foal shelter."

"We'll need two once the Scouting Team returns." You sigh. "Always something, isn't it?"

She gives you a commemorative shoulder bump before turning back to her team. "No worries Captain, you're doing fine so far. We won't let you or New Ponyville down."

With that, you trot back outside, stretching out as you trot around the supply pile and back into the warmth of the Generator's inner rings. The foals are still enjoying their Hot Chocolate, and you sip your tea slowly with a hum.

Yes, things are continuing apace. Now would be a good time to plan out what buildings need to be made. With your little helpers, you could even outline where you want things to be...

>>
>>38918423

That looks good, how about we do a hothouse too? By the end of the day the research will be done.
I'll sort my list by priority, that way we can have an order for what we should build without having to do the math, we just go as far down the list as our wood supply allows.
My list is: 4 tents, 2 workshops, hothouse, gathering post, steelworks, 2 foal shelter, medical post, then just sawmills
It's pretty much the same, just slightly rearranged based on my opinions for priority.
>>
>>38918726
They said a bit over half our storage of wood, not over 2/3
>>
>>38918801
Like I said it's sorted by priority, we just build as much of that list as we can in order. I'm just doing it that way so the QM can do the exact math, idk if he's using the exact same resource costs as in the game.
>>
>>38918873
multiple medical posts early on is a good thing since the healing speed is so slow and room is limited.
>>
>>38918985
We're probably being a bit nitpicky, we're currently doing very well, we've got plenty of time before the temp drop to build everything before then. I'll just modify my list to include the medical post so we can more quickly come to a decision for what to build tonight:
4 tents, 2 workshops, hothouse, medical post, gathering post, steelworks, foal shelter
Going off game costs we should probably get all that except the foal shelter.

Guess in the meantime I'll pose some questions:
Can we currently research the next tier of techs? What's the cost?
Also we'll soon need to decide our next generator tech, are steam hubs still superior to generator range upgrades like in the game?
How much of each resource is left to gather at the gathering posts?
>>
>>38922051
[[I swear to Epona some days being the military just ain't worth it...

Anyway.

In order-
Yes. It'll costs roughly five tents worth of material, which would prevent you from building some combination of the gathering post, steelworks, and foal shelter.

Generator Range Upgrades are much better here then they are in the game as they also provide flight-range for pegasus ponies which causes a production boost, but in cost and efficiency Steam Hubs are still 100% better than the generator range upgrades.

At the two active gathering posts, there is roughly two more days worth of gathering materials left on them. (After this shift ends) ]]

You round up the foals fairly quickly, explaining to them the new law and getting some excited chatter from them even if a few look bummed out that 'school is gonna start up again' and lead them on a rousing trip through the snow to outline where you want the new tents, the Workshops, the Hot House, re-making the outline for the last Gathering Post (it got snowed in), the last tent-sized slot in the middle ring for the final medical post, a long trek out to the edge of the Crater to map out where the pathways to the Steelworks will be, even as you quietly note that both of the massive iron deposits are right next to one another with a grim, but pleased smile, and finally the foal shelter, which you put on one side of the three workshops.

Finally you let yourself lay down, luxuriating in the heat of the Generator before you blink in surprise as a small body presses into yours. You look to your side to find Dinky and Pip snuggled together and then into you, and soon you find yourself in a cuddlepile as the foals all finally get worn out of energy as they come in to rest together in the warmth of the Generator.

You let out a peaceful sight, letting your eyes close for a moment. New Ponyville has a great start. You can only pray to Epona that things will continue to go so well.

>>38918873
[[There's a couple of adjustments here and there, but a lot of the math I'm rounding on due to not being able to make a running clock system to put in-thread.

There's some major rounding I have to do for things like Wood Per Hour, Steel Per Hour, and so on. Research and Healing times are -much- easier, but even Scout Travel time is a major pain in the flank because the hard data on the travel times outside of IRL time aren't friggin' posted anywhere.

Suffice to say I'm juggling some spreadsheets in the background.]]

Going off that I say we keep the range upgrade in mind but our first generator tech should still be steam hubs/heater. But let's discuss our next tech later.

[[The Trips have it]]
As the day finally winds down and ponies start to drift in from the workshift, you can't help but let out a little sigh of relief even as you hear the Engineers cheer as they finish their blueprinting and you stand up from the foal pile as they start to wake up and move around, looking excited to see their families again.

You step away to get to the Generator and blow the foghorn. "THE WORKSHIFT HAS ENDED, REST ALL YOU CAN!" You call out, your voice echoing around the Crater as your ponies come in, looking tired but flush with success as they swiftly move into building. Neighbors call to neighbors as the tents are erected and a cheer rises amongst the population of New Ponyville as every member has a place to rest their heads out from the storm.

You smile quietly to yourself, wings flared as you look out at your City. Things are going well, and the Hope thrums through each heartbeat in time with the Generator turning over.

You cast your eye across the citizens and finally get a grip on where everypony is. Octavia limps in to the inner ring and towards the Medical Post, slumping a bit as she walks. You wince as you see the blood around her haunch, it looks like a piece of wood dug into her. She's ushered inside by Fluttershy who gives you a sad smile. You'll have to get the story of that out of Fluttershy later, but it looks to be a minor injury at worse.

Pinkie lets out a relieved sigh as she settles down in front of the Generator to warm up after a long day in the cold, and you spot Rarity speaking with the CMC moments later. You nod to yourself as you glance at the Medical Post where Fluttershy is before glancing back at Rarity. Which Element to speak to about Pinkie first...

[[It is now End of Shift, and two hours have elapsed while ponies were building. You now have enough free time to take Rarity and Fluttershy's attention. Which one would you like to speak to first Captain?]]

You slip through the crowd as groups of ponies trot off, either off to build some more or to rest as needed, and quickly make your way over to Rarity, who is using some snow to wipe come coal stains off of her hooves. "If nothing else, I will appreciate once we're able to have baths again." She commiserates with Sweetie Belle, who looks in awe of her Big Sister's willingness to get dirty.

You quietly remember that this is the pony who, despite her extreme dislike of getting dirty, put herself through her own personal kind of Tartarus for her friends and most importantly for her Sister when the chips were down and it mattered most. And you've seen her get absolutely filthy when it mattered. Oh yes, Generosity is still shining bright, though even as you scan the crowd for the Element of Laughter again you can't help but to quietly ponder for how long she can keep going. How long anypony could keep going.

You huff and try to keep a stiff upper lip as you walk over, smiling at the two ponies as you approach. Rarity lets out a little 'oh!' and smiles at you before ushering Sweetie Belle along, turning to face you. "Good Evening Captain, is there something you need?" She asks, smiling in greetings as you come to a stop in front of her.

"Good Evening Rarity. I was hoping to steal a moment of your time if I could. I plan to do the same with Fluttershy in a bit. I need your assistance: Pinkie Pie has been looking rather... droopy, recently." You say, rubbing the back of your neck. "I think she's feeling rather down and she could use some cheering up. She's been working so hard to keep everypony motivated and I'm afraid of her burning out."

Rarity blinks a few times before sighing and giving you a small smile. "Yes, I noticed myself Darling. She's been doing a marvelous job but there just... isn't time in the day for much fun, I think." She sighs, shaking her head a little before looking at you. "You were planning on speaking to Fluttershy as well, I think we should go together. Perhaps we three can knock out a plan to help dear Pinkie."

Rarity trots off, motioning for you to follow, on the march that only pretty upper-class woman can make that gets ponies to part in front of her so she can make her way through the crowd as you follow along. If nothing else, you can appreciate that the mare is on a mission.

You swiftly trot after Rarity, who hums warmly as she leads the way through the crowds as you idly check on construction progress and smile as your city starts to actually look like a city. Soon you're at the Medical Post, and Rarity steps inside for a moment before being followed out by Fluttershy who is wiping some blood off of her hooves.

"O-oh, hello Captain. Octavia will be fine, she slipped and fell into the crates earlier and got a nasty splinter. It's a minor injury over all, she'll be fine. It bled a lot which made it look worse than it was." Fluttershy reports and you let out a pleased sigh. "Very good, but we've got another issue I'd hopefully like to address."

You explain what you've seen for Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy frowns thoughtfully as Rarity nods along before she sighs quietly, her wings drooping a bit. "I'm sorry to hear that Captain, but without Rainbow Dash and Applejack here I don't think we'll be able to properly cheer Pinkie up. I think she needs a party, but a small, quiet affair."

You blink in confusion. "Wouldn't it be the opposite? I thought Pinkie would be all about a big party."

"Oh, no." Fluttershy shakes her head. "Big Parties are important to her, but little parties are comforting for her, because they're like the very first party she ever threw." The butter-yellow mare explains. "I won't say too much more, but considering that..."

You all fall quiet for a moment as you remember what Pinkie told you before, about how it was very likely that her family was... lost to the Frostlands, before nodding. "I understand what you mean. What would you need to throw a party for Pinkie?"

Fluttershy frets for a moment as Rarity takes over, closing her eyes. "The Scouts would likely have to stay here for the whole shift... they wouldn't be able to leave till maybe midnight tomorrow, after the workday has ended and any building that we'll need to do is complete, so you wouldn't be able to send them out right away. As well, we'd need to establish someplace to hold a party, or at least a small get-together."

You frown and look down thoughtfully.

[[Critical Objective Update- Pinkie's Party: A party for Pinkie Pie would require all of the EoH (minus Princess Twilight) to be in New Ponyville during the hours past End of Shift. You would also be occupied for this time and incapable of putting out new orders, marking new buildings to be made if you had any last minute work orders to make, and cannot be done if you have Extended Shifts activated.

You need a place to throw a party- Acceptable Locations include the Arcade or the Public House. To throw the party you need to pass one (or both) of these laws and build the required number of Arcades or Public House.]]

[[It's possible. Depends on how quickly you want to get it done. Shit, dude, count me in. Where are we at? I haven't read the whole thing, but so far it looks like everything's going alright and there's no deaths or foal labor yet. What day are we on?

Also do we have a good description of how the Captain looks? 'Proto-Celestia' is as far as I've gotten.
>>
>>38927802
I guess the second option is temporarily disbanding the scout group to increase our workforce even further until we need to send them out again. No point having them sit around doing nothing while everybody else is working.

[[Welcome! Currently we are at the end of Day 2. I highly recommend backreading to catch up, but the short version is you have Scouts and the normal Frostpunk things slowly getting sorted out.

The Captain is a currently unnamed Pegasus Mare who stands roughly a head taller than everypony else around her. She's a gray-ish white coat color and has a flowing pink mane and tail. We have yet to see her eyes or most of her body due to the cold of the Frostland preventing her an opportunity to remove her cold weather gear. She wears a gorgeous purple/violet scarf made by Rarity to help differentiate her from everypony in The City.

The City's name is New Ponyville. Current population: 80. You have tents for everyone to sleep out of the Frost, and a medical post to treat the sick. Forty more ponies are arriving in the city in the morning.

You will receive objectives from me, The Chronicler, from time to time. Some of these are ignorable or just suggestions. Others put the very lives of your ponies and the life of the city at risk if you fail to accomplish them. You currently have two Critical Objectives- Rekindling the Hope of Pinkie Pie and Octavia Melody.

Above all else: The City Must Survive.]]

You nod at Fluttershy and Rarity. "I'll stop 'em and bring them back down. I'll also pass the Arcade Law and get that built during the day. What else do you need?"

Rarity hums. "Oh, we'd need a Cookhouse to make cupcakes. That won't be too difficult."

You add Cookhouse to your list and nod to the girls. "Alright, I better do my rounds, thank you girls."

A rousing cheer echoes around your little group of three as the ponies finish the last building for tonight. Just short on the wood needed to build the Foal Shelter.

Everything is ready for tomorrow. All that's left is to pass a law if you feel like it, and hand out the tech upgrade to start working on tomorrow morning.

FROSTPUNK FAGS GET IN HERE AND HELP THE COLD LITTLE PONES
FOOD OR TECH - WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT THE FIRST FEW DAYS?
>>
>>38933179
Food how the fuck is that even a question. That and we need to help ponka
>>
>>38933179
We've got a hothouse so all we need is the cookhouse. Since we've still got a day left of food we should be fine to build the cookhouse after day 3 (right now we're at end of day 2), we would start producing cooked food soon after we run out beginning of day 4. There's plenty of other things we have to worry about right now so I'd say let's keep with that plan.

I'll try to list our priorities: there's the instrument for octavia, throwing a party for Pinkie, passing the arcade law + building it so we CAN throw the party, building a foal shelter by tomorrow night (>>38889012), building more tents for incoming ponies, researching techs, and getting food production going. Anything else I forgot?
>>
>>38933454
Going off that list here's my current plan:
By the time the workday begins tomorrow we'll have an extra 10 engineers and 22 workers (>>38910928). That means we should be able to fill all our work buildings and have 12 workers extra (It's 12 and not 7 because we will disband the scout group for the workers >>38928904). We'll have those excess workers build the arcade. After they finish building they could then be put to gathering wood and steel. I'm voting we build the arcade during the day and not now so we don't delay research, might as well make use of that extra labor.
We should aim to both throw the party for Pinkie tomorrow and build Octavia's instrument. Pinkie's party is especially important since our scouts are stuck here until we throw the party. (unless we postpone the party until after the next scouting trip, [which I strongly think we should avoid], or if we can reassign our scout group to have different ponies)
There's also the new tents for the group that arrives soon, four will house them.
Doing the math we should hopefully have enough wood for all the buildings by the end of the day tomorrow.
We won't be able to do anything after the workday because of the party (>>38926727) so we need to lay out the plans for the buildings before the workshift ends tomorrow. We should research steam hubs tomorrow and build all those buildings around our first steam hub since space around the generator is now limited.
>>
>>38933459
>tl;dr:
Tomorrow we build the arcade during the workday + make Octavia's instrument. Also during the day we plan out 4 tents, a foal shelter, a cookhouse, a steam hub, and whatever else we decide, all to be built after shift. When shift ends we'll then be able to go to Pinkie's party while also having everything built that needs to be for our objectives (hopefully).

(Sorry about the text dump but with all the things we have to do soon we can easily fail some things, I figured we should make a more detailed plan for tonight to make sure we get everything done. Let me know what all I forgot to take into account and any other ways I'm retarded)
>>
>>38933464
We'll need two foal shelters to get the bonus from that law we passed. Also, I thought it'd take a full day including both morning and evening to do the party.
>>
>>38933477
As far as I can tell going off of >>38926727 it's only after the work day:
>...would require all of the EoH (minus Princess Twilight) to be in New Ponyville during the hours past End of Shift. You would also be occupied for this time...
But some extra clarification would be nice.

I didn't include the second foal shelter since that's not an objective that we could fail, it's just a bonus (iirc). For my plan I was focusing on keeping us from failing anything, I see that as lower priority. But I agree that if we have the spare wood after building everything else we need to on day 3 we should build two foal shelters instead of one for that research bonus.

also I'll now be gone for a while, I'll be back in 12-24 hours. (you guys keep thread alive plz)
>>
>>38933477
>>38933500
[[Lots of gets tonight.

For clarification: The EoH - Twilight must be in New Ponyville after End of Shift in order to throw Pinkie Pie's Party. They are not required to be there at the start of shift (but fortuitously they will be as they return at 0500)

Barring anything unfortunate happening or poor luck, you should have enough wood and steel by the end of shift to accomplish everything that you have currently laid out. The only thing that you wouldn't be able to accomplish is the Cello for Octavia, due to that needing to be started right at the start of shift and it requiring 1 tents worth of wood and a fully manned Workshop.]]
>>
>>38931209
Boop foals
>>
>>38933706
When we disband the scout group do we get any wood back, and if so is it enough for the cello? Since we've got 15 engineers we can fill two workshops and the medical post. One of the workshops could then be put to making the cello.
>>
>>38934982
[[Yes, you will get the initial investment of Wood back but you will need the same amount of wood to reestablish the Scouting team (4 tents worth)]]
>>

I kind of don't get this because every post says we have 80 ponies at the site of New Ponyville and Appledash Scout Patrol is bringing back 40 newcomers, yet only 35 were designated. I assumed the last 5 were the scout party themselves, but that leaves 75 ponies at New Ponyville, which is not what Aly keeps saying.
>>
>>38935160
Alright, so we should then be able to build the cello tomorrow. Since the cello is only one tent's worth of wood we'll still be able to reassemble the scout group and send them back out at midnight after the party.

>>38936196
Thanks for the list, keeping better track of everything can only help us in the long run.

On another note I've been worried about letting Octavia and Pinkie keep working, the big point is that Octavia was hurt. They were mostly superficial wounds today but to me that means that both of them are at risk if they keep working. Would it be a good idea to keep them off work duty for tomorrow, or would that be a worse choice?

While your ponies sleep, you trot through the snow, eyes narrowed as you contemplate everything that you need to accomplish even as you let the cold rush over you, wings spread to take in the freezing air.

You're pacing, marching and laying out the outline for the Cookhouse, and one of the two Arcades you'll be required to build by Law. You announced the signing of the Arcade law before your ponies went to sleep, to a tired cheer as everypony retired to their tents, sighing peacefully as they rested after the hard work of the day was done.

But your day was not yet over.

Once you had the outlines marked out, including ensuring that the two Arcade would cover the entirety of your current housing and future housing built around them. You finish your march before inspecting your wings in the moonlight and the glow of the generator, using a critical eye to inspect each feather to make sure that you had preened out any that were loose before folding them again with a sigh.

You would only need a little sleep, but you knew that you'd have to plan out where you slept very, very carefully... if only so your ponies wouldn't see you sleeping outside.

They didn't need to waste resources on you, there was time for that yet. You huff out and watch your breath curl through the air, blanketed against the starts.

Tomorrow was another day. New Ponyville has Survived.

You steel yourself. The City Must Survive.

-----

You can hear the cheers before the ponies get into The Crater and New Ponyville proper. You stretch from your spot at the foot of the generator, luxuriating in the heat as you carefully tuck the spare materials you used as a mattress back into the Supply Tent before flexing your wings and taking into the air, leaping over the tents and landing so you can meet the scouting party.

It is Day 3 of New Ponyville's existence, and right now, as the sun rises- the rest of the Expedition has come Home.

"YEEEEEEEEEEE-HAW! Now that's some good workin'!" Applejack cheers out as ponies start to wake up and start their day. She approaches at a steady trot, Rainbow Dash even making it airborne for a bit to glide over to meet you and you greet the ponies in a warm embrace.

"Excellent work. Never doubted you for a second Applejack." You praise, hugging her and then Rainbow Dash individually before the rest of the scout group trots up, all smiles and proud posture as they salute you as a group, this time Rainbow takes the lead. "New Ponyville Scouting Party One reporting, Captain! We've returned with the rest of our Expedition!"
>>
>>38940154
You can feel the Hope of the city rise as the rest of the Expedition makes their way closer before all Tartarus breaks lose as ponies come together in a rush, talking rapidly and greeting each other. Lovers split apart meeting again with shaky, tearful nuzzles, the three foals gleefully hugging crying parents, neighbors hugging neighbors as New Ponyville finally brings home the rest of their own.

You feel yourself swell with pride, even as you carefully guide your herd into the warmth of the Generator. That's a pretty monumental task, taking till roughly 0530 before you finally are able to make your way to the announcement platform and double pump the fog horn to get everypony's attention. "MY LITTLE PONIES!" You call out to the crowd, who look up to you as you spread your wings. "It is a glorious day for New Ponyville! Our Families are HOME!"

They roar back in approval, stamping hoofs and cheering as you look out over them with a smile. "Our Scouts have performed wonderfully, and today, we shall finally be able to produce OUR OWN FOOD!"

Everypony cheers again, even as you mentally wince at the reminder that that Hothouse used one of the precious Steam Cores that the expedition brought. Needs must, though you are well aware of how hard it is going to be to get more.

"But, our work is not done, my ponies. Even now, other cities are setting up at their own Generators, and we will prepare! The Frost will not be eternal!" You stomp your hoof for emphasis. "But we all need to lift! We will not be left adrift, not any one of us! New Ponyville is united, and will stand against the Storm!"

Your ponies cheer again, even as the thrum of the Generator turns into a hammering, and you feel the urge to sing... before it suddenly stops. You blink at that, and even as you step down from the platform and your ponies go to mingling, you ponder.

Heartsongs don't just suddenly -stop-. Usually if a Heartsong is started, the magic in it will spurn you onwards. But it didn't start here. Why? You search yourself quietly, mentally pondering it before you're struck by the realization that you're missing a -instrument-. Specifically, you're missing... Octavia.

Heartsongs are important. You feel it thrumming low in your heart as the song yearns for the chance to be freed from your heart and soul. That being said, the feeling would go away in about a day or two if you didn't end up singing it. A rare event but not unheard of.

You sigh, closing your eyes before casing your gaze about your ponies. You've got two hours before shift starts, and you should spend at least some time letting your Scout know that they're not getting back underway right now in preparation for Pinkie's party. So... what now, Captain?

What's a Heartsong? A musical number, like from the show? That's a new one to me... I don't think I've seen a CYOA feature a song. I want it.

I feel like wood and food are what we're lacking the most right now. Maybe some research should go to those areas? I mean, we know for sure that we have a pony whose buttmark talent is lumber collection. We should see what he/his team is doing.

In fact... I feel like we should have somebody keeping tabs on the populace. We have over 100 ponies to keep track of, and we know for a fact that 2 of them are depressed. They can't be the only ones.

Maybe after we get Ponk cheered up, she can do that.

With the heartsong simmering in your chest you let yourself calm to a more neutral state of being. Princess Celestia and Princess Luna selected you to be Captain because of your ability to keep your emotions out of your decision making, among other things, and you can't let the heartsong guide your decisions. Not when they could have such far ranging consequences.

You make your way through your ponies as they continue to wake up and break their fast, the members that just arrived eating first at the insistence of your currently well-fed ponies quietly reminding you that you need to get food production going properly.

You have a few ideas swirl through your head, and a momentary thought of having ponies that's jobs are looking over and after your ponies as the population grows might be a good idea, but you carefully file that thought away for later. After all, even if every pony and Pinkie were feeling fine, you still don't quite have the population count to require such a thing, nor a reason.

Yet.

Finally you're able to get to the Scouting Party again, and inform them to disband for the day before taking Applejack, Rainbow Dash and Starlight Glimmer aside. You're not quite sure how deep Glimmer is in the friendship of the girls, but you're not taking any chances. You quickly explain what's going on in hushed tones, keeping a firm grip on Dash's jacket to keep the impulsive pegasus mare from zipping off to confront Pinkie on her own.

"A Party huh?" Applejack hums. "Ain't that a bit selfish of us to use this time to cheer up Pinkie?"

You shake your head in disagreement. "It is a bit selfish, but I think it's important." You look AJ in the eyes. "After all, if Pinkie gives up, of all ponies, who knows how many ponies would give up like her."

AJ frowns and nods thoughtfully as Rainbow Dash shutters theatrically. "Oof, don't lay it on so strong there Captain, no need to guilt us into it, of course we'll help with the party!"

You give the two mares a grin and glance at Glimmer who just gives you a nervous smile before she squawks in surprise as she's hooked by Dash and dragged away. "We'll go start talking shop with Rarity, you just make sure that Cookhouse and Arcade are ready before the end of the day!" Dash declares as they quickly move back into the mass of ponies to go find Rarity and you turn to Applejack in exasperation.

"Applejack, please make sure Dash doesn't blow the whole secret out of the water, and would you work at the Hothouse today? I think it would do everypony some good to see members from the Apple Family making sure the food is being produced properly." You say, and Applejack gives you a stare and a sigh. "Yer gonna make me work with Carrot Top ain't cha?" You wince as she calls you out.

"... Eeyup."

"Dangnabbit. Fine, can't let that feud last forever anywho, it's too cold to get heated up over land that's covered in the Frost anyway."

[[You have one more interaction before work starts for the day]]
>>
>>38945804
Who do we got left to interact with any who? I mean we're working for the survival of the city here after all!

Seconding a quick check-in with Octavia. She's hovering between Level 1 and Level 2 depression and she got hurt on the job. If nobody else checked in with her, that's probably pushed her solidly into Level 2 territory. We need to get her out of there before she hits Silver Spoon levels and potentially offs herself.

[[Current plan is we're going to go talk to Octavia (and see our ponies recovered from getting sick/any new sick ponies while we're at it)

I'll update when I can, day got crazy my apologizes.]]
