>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/454522/and-i-would-live-in-stone
'And I Would Live in Stone' is a three thousand and four hundred word oneshot, set long after the show's finale. Cozy, Tirek, and Chrysalis are still imprisoned in stone, as years turn into decades. Every once in a while Twilight visits them to ask if they are ready to start over. As time passes, their resolve is broken again and again, until each time a choice is made.
What elevates this story from good to great is the iron grip it has on its narration. Chrysalis is jaded to no end and she has no qualms about filling her reminiscing with venomous contempt as she talks about her former comrades' betrayal. Yet what makes it work so well isn't that she's talking rudely, (albeit the author makes this deeply enjoyable as well, with great prose and heated lines,) but rather that as the reader gets further into the story, it becomes hard to say that she's entirely wrong. Even if Twilight considers stoning a mercy, it's basically psychological torture. And what's more, depending on how reliable of a narrator Chrysalis is, it seems like even Twilight has somewhat realized this, as she intentionally locks Cozy away for a far longer time in hopes of breaking her. Portraying reformation as a kind of implicit subjugation isn't exactly a novel concept, but the fic does it really well. Another thing I really enjoyed is how hollow the ending feels. Yes, Chrysalis technically won in the end. But that victory has only earned her an endless imprisonment in stone. It's a catch-22 of either completely giving herself up or remaining resolute and, for all intents and purposes, dead. And, to put another layer, onto this already fairly nuanced situation. the last time she was released even she began to crack. The author leaves it hanging whether this is just a moment of weakness or whether Twilight is finally slowly having her way, but either way it makes the story's end all the more sour in a good way. One more thing I considered interesting is that while she mentions several times how she absolutely intended to betray the other two eventually, when they do the same, she's absolutely hurt. One can interpret this as anger at Twilight, of course, but it could just as easily be denial.
I don't really have anything to say in terms on negatives. Perhaps it would've been interesting to hear a few more dialogues between Twilight and Chrysalis or Cozy and Chrysalis, but maybe the strength of this fic comes from only really presenting one perspective and requiring the reader to figure out the rest from the implications.
Overall: 8/10 A simple concept executed greatly, in a story whose length feels just right, featuring awesome narration and a moral dilemma where neither side could really be called right or wrong. If you're a fan of more "philosophical" than action-packed short stories, I can highly recommend this one.

>Twilight and co. are preparing for the celebration
>Things go sour and when Twilight finally gathers her friends to figure out what's wrong, they tell her that they didn't want her to freak out
>Twilight absolutely chimps out
>Before she could really scold her friends, however, a literally who appears
>Said literally who turns out to be the "biggest political voice of Equestria"
>Guy proceeds to shit on Twilight, the Princesses, and finally Discord, calling all of them terrible and incompetent
>He then just walks away
>Twilight breaks down crying, renounces her crown, and runs away
>Celestia goes "Uhh guess no Summer Sun Celebration this year then," and everyone is pissed
>Discord promises to find Twilight, while the others start discussing what to do next
>Cue next day, Literally Who had published an article about Twilight that changed the ponies views about her overnight and now she's universally hated
>Crowds gather who chant "NO MORE TWILIGHT"
>Meanwhile Purplesmart ran deep into the forest and by a stroke of sheer luck ends up in the lair of the villains
Here comes the kicker:
>They show her how her friends are really concerned about her and Twilight is deeply touched, regretting running away
>Then they show her the chanting crowds and Twilight immediately forgets about her sudden epiphany and breaks down once more
>"So why not embrace us and become evil like we are?"
>“I’m afraid of what Celestia would say to me if I turned evil,” Twilight said. “But it’s far better than having to put up with what those nutcases will do to me if I don't. You got yourself a deal.”
>The trio immediately entrusts her with the Bell that she figures out in about a second after reading a book
>She unlocks its power and they're powered up while laughing maniacally

Chapter 2:
>Literally Who blames Cozy Glow on Twilight, eliciting further outrage from the M6
>AJ and Rarity try to reason with him, but he's adamant
>“If innocents are caught up in the crossfire, then that’s the price they pay for getting in their way. That is the judgement of Equestria. Now get out of my news service right this instant, before I have you both arrested for trespassing.”
>Defeated, they leave
>The protests continue chanting Twilight's name at the School, despite the fact that she's known to be missing
>A tomato-covered Trixie and Starlight discuss how terrible the situation is
One thing of note is how forced the dialogue feels when ex-villains talk:
>“I have not seen any pony act like this in my entire lifetime,” Starlight Glimmer said as she got out of her seat. “Not even when I was a power-hungry tyrant using equality as a mask. And it’s been driving me mad.”
>The Y6 appears, covered in tomatoes
>The group continues to drive the point home that ponies are acting terrible
>Starlight figures the best way to protect the students is to send them all home and have them never meet again
>Suddenly Diamond Tiara appears and collapses
>She explains that the protesters have attacked her, her family and their estate
>The M6 (excl. Twilight), the Y6, Spike, Starlight and Trixie, and finally Diamond Tiara gather
>Once again they reiterate that ponies are acting bad, their crimes becoming more and more heinous (and thus hilarious)
>Starlight shuts down the school and calls for everyone to move to Canterlot
>Meanwhile the protesters break down the School's defenses:
>"Immediately, the alarm went off and the lights flashed red as a voice stated 'EMERGENCY! EMERGENCY! SCHOOL OF FRIENDSHIP BREACHED! EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY!'"
>Panic ensues as the group tries to rescue the rest of the students
>"Rarity fired a flash bang from her horn, getting the attention of the students in the hallway." - I bet she did
And there we have it ladies and gentlemen:
> “We have to suffer because of one bigot’s opinion on Princess Twilight Sparkle?”
>The group tries to escape the School, but the exit is blocked by protestors
>"The faculty and students of the School of Friendship crowded together as the mob began to approach the group with extreme prejudice."
>The mob is closing in when suddenly...
>"'YOU SHALL NOT PASS!' Sunset Shimmer yelled as her horn glowed."
>Meanwhile the mob begins chanting "It is the way of Neigh Nanners" (despite moments ago chanting "This is the will of Neigh Nanners")
>They finally get out and board the train to Canterlot
>“Hey, that reminds me,” Rainbow Dash said. “Applejack, where are your folks?”
>They inexplicably appear on the train, despite not being mentioned getting on
>Diamond Tiara has an epiphany about being bad
>“I don’t know,” Big Mac said. “I haven’t felt this much despair since ma and pa died.”
And so the train departs. The mood is positively apocalyptic. To be continued...

>>

With every chapter, the previous ones grow stronger.
Eventually I'll have a world that I can tie sequels into.
>>
>>38069300
I write a section, include whatever comes to mind that I think fits, then go back and reread it while asking myself what different parts of it might convey to the reader and which ones could have further use. I then keep my conclusions in mind and integrate them later while writing in the form of things building off of them or that reference them (not in the direct way, but in the way that makes it seem like the original thing was hinting at the current thing). If there's a major thing then I'll have gone into writing the story with it in mind, and if it's not major enough for that then I have no issue introducing it later without earlier mention.
>>
>>38069300
I think I've done that in some of my earlier chapters, but now I'm at a point where I rarely ever need to anymore.
Usually because I can find other, non-retcon, ways of inserting the worldbuilding.

So, any tips on writing episodic plots? I got the characters, but how do I weave a tale about them that's coherent yet short with a strong arc?
>just steal bro
I want to improve as a writer and that means analyzing the structure of a story. I won't learn anything mindlessly stealing other people's ideas, and I won't understand how to work it into the context of my fics anyway.
>>
>>38069485
Have some chapters being about the overarching plot and others about individual bits. Honestly, watch the first two seasons of Stand Alone Complex, especially the first one. That has an overarching story and isolated individual episodes, but the finale has plenty from the isolated episodes come back to a meaningful impact.
>>
>>38069485
Not exactly what degree of episodicity you're looking for.
Since I have some rather strongly episodic periods in my fic, a tip I could give is to write out as much as possible in advance, even if it's 90% rough draft garbage. Just get the plot points down.
That said, maybe I'm misinterpreting what "episodic" really means; I didn't set out to write an episodic fic and I kinda just settled there since it worked best for the story I want to tell.
>>
>>38069337
>12 hours

>If Harry already knows the reveal then the only fucking point of going to the Shack is to let Pettigrew escape
Well joke's on you, anon, because Pettigrew gets BTFO'd

Hailey, Hermione, and Ron (carrying Scabbers) follow Sirius Black into the Shrieking Shack. Lupin arrives and tries to stun Black, but Hailey blocks the spell and explains the situation. Rita Skeeter shows up at some point. Snape arrives, decides Lupin is untrustworthy, and ties him up, but Sadarina dispels the binding, blocks another stunning spell, and heats up Snape's wand so it burns him and he drops it.

Now the situation is under control again, they force Pettigrew back to human form. He tries to talk his way out of it, but of course everyone already knows everything, plus Sadarina's dementor sense tells her that he's guilty. Sadarina also lifts Voldemort's wand from Pettigrew when he's not looking. Pettigrew realizes he's not getting anywhere and tries to evoke feet, but backup arrives, in the form of Morning Sun, Ginny, Ariel, Silversong Malfoy, and Diamond Tiara.

They decide to take Pettigrew back to the castle to get a confession out of him with some veritaserum. That would normally be illegal, but Amelia Bones has just woken up from her month-long coma and is now a dementor, so Sadarina contacts her via the dementor hivemind and gets her to come downstairs and grant the necessary approval. They just so happen to run into Cornelius Fudge, who is very interested to hear what a dead man and his murderer are doing in the Hogwarts foyer (along with two professors, seven students, a dementor, a tulpa, and a newspaper reporter).

In the end, Pettigrew gets the dementor's kiss and Sirius Black is exonerated.

Current recs are about as varied as you can get. There's a slight bias towards more popular stories (several of which are from the golden era of ~2012) but that's to be expected in any 'best of' list.
In fact, with how many 2020/2021 have been recommended I'd be more worried about recency bias than anything else.

I don't see things going well from here. Harry's already a badass so book 4 can't have much going on and book 5 takes serious damage if Fudge doesn't think that the people saying that Voldie's coming back are mad. Books 6 and 7 might be able to go off without a hitch, but they'll be very different if Harry is as powerful as he seems.

I don't think that anyone here actually likes Potter. I'd gladly argue against the series, but I'm firmly of the opinion that the seventh book is so obviously shit that it settles any arguments over the quality of the series as a whole.

I really enjoy writing about a male and a female pony as the protagonists of a fic. No need to spam their names, just use pronouns 99% of the time and it's fine.

I read them when I was a kid and loved them.
I reread them when I was in my early teens and still liked them.
I read them again in my late teens and decided it was better to stop and keep the good memories.
The people that keep bringing it up in the thread aren't really helping.

I have the same thing with The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paloni.
A very terribly written series by a young teen that was obviously pushed by rich parents, with everything essentially copied from a far better older book series, but as a kid it was amazing to read.
I still have the books somewhere, but I sure as shit aint reading them.

>>38070047
Same here, and with HP as well. No way in hell I'm ruining those memories.
Especially since the last book in the inheritance cycle was the first full novel I read in English.

Man, was it me or was there a great deal of burgeoning sexual tension and energy between Saphira and Eragon?

It's been mentioned in this thread before; it's mostly just authors trying to form parasocial bonds with their readers. To get them to maybe read more of their fics and whatnot.
At least that's the cynical interpretation.
The less cynical interpretation would be that they're just happy someone faved their fic. Though that only really makes sense for smaller fics anyway.

This was before I’d REALLY discovered the internet so I were still an autistic total booknerd with very vivid imagination so all books must have felt amazing back then (Harry Potter sure did). I don’t know if ranger’s apprentice is shit but I don’t really care because the memories and emotions are and were real. I can hardly remember any of the story but I remember bows, horses, swords, a burning bridge and a bunch of incoherent stuff.

Sell it to me, Anon. I've been looking at it a while ago, but the G5 setting ultimately dissuaded me. Yeah I know, I'm being hypocritical as fuck, considering I had no qualms about reviewing several other G5 stories, but those were all a fraction of these two stories' lengths.

You guys talk about summers reading when you were a kid. The only great summer like that I remember was when I was in my late teen years. I can't place exactly when it was, but it only makes sense if it was in the time just between the end of my high school years and the start of the weird shit we Brits do for two years after that (A-Levels). I must've been 15 or 16 at the time.

At the time, I was in love. I had a cold for a lot of it and, in retrospect, I think I was high from the Olbus Oil. I distinctly remember being super fucking comfy in my bed, getting a text from my grandparents saying that they were coming round to deliver cake, and being angry about it because I was so fucking comfy. It doesn't make sense to me and it might have even not fucking happened, but they were the happiest days of my life. I remember it being a whole cake. The woman that I was in love with is still the only woman that I've ever loved, but I never even got a chance to touch her by any definition of the word.

I was reading Higurashi at the time.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/4656/anthropology
Anthropology is a 130k word fic starring the fandoms favorite background pony Lyra. Lyra is a moderately successful musician living with her platonic roommate Bon-Bon. As the title implies, Lyra is obsessed about humans and despite everypony around her thinking that she's off her rocker and humans quite obviously are such a myth that even considering them real is just childish silliness. On the contrary Lyra herself is that odd mix of theatrically paranoid that she's absolutely convinced that the equestrian government is out to get her, but also is perfectly willing to tell anyone and everyone including personal student of the nation's ruler herself Twilight Sparkle all about it. The first half the story has her trying to figure out her dreams, researching the tiny scraps(and entire archives of human books for some reason), experimenting with hands and all sorts of related hijinks as her roommate tries to figure out
Lyra is a fun character to read, and despite her lack of critical thinking skills, and the fact that 12 years old is a perfectly reasonable age to move out of your parents house and in with a stranger for 4 years in ponyland(this is relevant later), the character just comes across as absolutely genuine.
The other characters in the book don't actually add a whole lot. Bon-bon is kind of a bitch and remains a bitch throughout the entire series with her hangups about humans, and how Lyra is incredibly passionate about it and all Bon-bon does is tear her down and try to get her to do her music career. I get what the author was trying to go for, but I have to wonder why they are even friends. It also doesn't help that Bon-bon comes across as an adult given that she's the landlord and as we've mentioned Lyra is a teenager, though nobody in ponyland seems to find this odd which is interesting worldbuilding to say the least
Twilight is the only other character for the first half of the story Before the big twist and there's not much to say about her either. She was asked by Celestia to learn about humans with Lyra, and while Lyra is suspicous she gets over it in like a paragraph and its barely given any lip service.
The first half of the story culminates in Lyra going to go perform at the gala(not that gala) where the story basically ends. Only there's like 70k words left to go.
The story is over, Lyra was right all along, the government was actively trying to suppress knowledge of humans the whole time not only that but the reason why Lyra was having all those human centric dreams was because it turns out she was human all along and a magical accident brought her into equestria as a baby this specific thing is never actually explained as there's drama and conflict to be had with her parents over it and we transition to the next book, or the other 70k words published as a single narrative. 1/2

The thing about them I enjoyed was that Sunny and friends go exploring in lost corners of Equestria to find artifacts from the long lost past, the first story being them finding Twilight's castle and the second them going to the Crystal Empire. If you're not down with G5 I wouldn't blame you for skipping over them but if you don't mind G5 then they're neat.

>Review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/4656/anthropology continued
Lyra was adopted and was taken in by the pony parents, only Celestia doesnt want humans in equestria because of how chaotic they are, which granted, the only pony more hectic in this continuity then Lyra is Twilight, though thats because the show up to at the latest season 3 is canon. Lyra wants to be human again, and gets sent to iowa, where shes taken in by some good samaritans as we get the tried and true fish out of water story as Lyra pretends to have lived on earth all this time her new friends, who actually recognize that getting kicked out at 12 and living basically on your own till 16 is kinda odd think she was kidnapped and raised by the Amish.
She makes friends, joins a band, and tries to find her real parents while adjusting to human culture as her bubbly and incredibly naive self through another suspicious coincidence to move the plot along, she finds out her real parents are actually these famous fantasy writers all along, and the writer just kinda goes along with it, which is the real reason why she started the fic at 16 in my view because otherwise this plotline wouldn't exactly work if Lyra was a full fledged adult. Its just really weird.
More culture shock and a few more friends are made until the plot comes a knocking and we get a real villian Discord. who she defeats with her new friends after going back to equestria for a minute and exposing herself as a unicorn to her new family, Celestia kinda just goes along with this and sends her back without much protest.
Ultimately while I enjoyed this fic while reading it a great deal, the prose felt natural and Lyra is just a fun character, weird worldbuilding choices coupled with a plot held together with a ton of coincidences, like the following
>Celestia has been censoring history about humans for a thousand years but for some reason theres an entire archive of books about humans in canterlot right when Lyra gets interested that she just missed. This is never addressed.
>After arriving on earth Lyra just happens to find a willing family to take her in after meeting her, when she was busking.
>Later when shes having a lot of trouble finding her family, the band run by creepy 30 somethings just happens to recognize the person who is lyra's dad because hes actually a famous writer.
and so on and so forth. Its enjoyable and easy to read and nothing is overtly retarded aside from Lyra herself, but its really convienent each time and those add up in retrospect. The ending also came out of nowhere where we got an out of place action sequence that parroted the nightmare moon fight from the pilot. Overall its a 5/10. Its a decent read, and i didnt waste my time, but its not really anything of quality.

Fuck i must be tired, i dont know how i fucked that up. Its supposed to say "As her roomate tries to convince her to abandon her human studies and be serious about the music career,"
>Would you say the fic would be better with only its first half?
No, I dont. I really enjoyed the first half, and the second third and the finale. the main problem is how it transitions between them. Lyra doing wacky hijinks in ponyville related to humans with a longsuffering roommate was great, Lyra adjusting to earth and finding her real family was also really enjoyable, and Lyra teaming up with her humanfriends to defeat Discord with the elements of harmony while the weakest part of the narrative was also really good. The problem is how they move from one arc to the other, and for once i think it would have benefited from being a 70k story, a 50k story and a 12k story since thats basically what it was

"It's all (s)he could do to/not to ____."
Maybe it's just me being ESL, but I hate this turn of phrase. It bothers me because my brain thinks there's a part missing.
What was it? What is is that the character could've done? Usually it just means the character is doing whatever it is they're supposed to not be doing, which makes that particular use of the phrase pointless.
Like, say, "It was all Twilight could do to avoid looking at the disappointed Celestia." What is is that Twilight was supposed to have done there? Because it usually just means that Twilight averted her gaze. Meaning that she avoided looking at the disappointed Celestia.
PIsses me off.

>Luna was old fashioned, though, and preferred the more "hooves on" approach of yore
>Seeing Gilda, and feeling a bit pent up, she decides to relive her glory days
>Trixie witnessed the affair, however, and in the interest of keeping it all under wraps Luna instills in her the same devoted loyalty she had in the griffon moments ago
>Cue an endless daisy chain of witnesses needing to be fucked into silence as Luna gradually dicks Equestria and beyond into submission

>>38070656
>Usually it just means the character is doing whatever it is they're supposed to not be doing
It can mean that, but it can also mean a character doing their best to avoid doing something they know they shouldn't or just don't consciously want to do. Like someone trying to ignore the sounds of agonizing torture while Evil McAsshole threatens to rip the secrets from their flesh if they don't cooperate, or trying not to be swayed into bed with some lascivious weirdo despite themselves being extremely turned on at the moment.
The "all (s)he could do" part is, to my knowledge, meant to portray their impotence in the matter, that the best they can do in the face of some dire predicament is whatever is mentioned in relation to that statement, and, at least to me, gives the sense that it might not be enough to see the character pull through, whether at all or just according to their own terms.

i read way to much of this shit, and those are way above the bar, what i appreciate the most about ponybooks is that they really nail character interactions sometimes
this is something fanfiction has an upper hand in when compared to conventional literature actually, a "normal" book needs to introduce a character almost every time, meanwhile fics present you with someone who you already have characterized in your head so its much easier for you to get invested and to understand how they might be feeling, how they might act. its a mental shorthand and what makes it even better is that the writer can then surprise you with a different characterization, building intrigue

I can suggest https://www.fimfiction.net/story/483305/the-sister-sidestep-scootaloo. It's a very comfy fic that does the sister-swapping we never really got to see within the show. The interactions are well done and this is the best of the 3 sister-swapping stories done by the author, in my eyes.

I can also encourage the nomination of https://www.fimfiction.net/story/169613/monsters now that I've finally read through it again. It's an enjoyable secret service fic that takes place only a few years after Luna's spergout. Although fairly dark/edgy at times it shows an interesting take on how Equestria and all living within would struggle after NMM leaves it with many, many scars.

You mean SoL or a tv show "plot of the week" structure? The former's just about writing the daily, mundane life of the characters, especially the "quiet" times when the camera's not on. Every single multichapter fic will inevitably have a shitty or disappointing ending that makes me question why I read it and I hate Cloud Kicker because she's an idiot who refuses to deal with her personal drama and lets it fester for 300k instead, but I keep reading it because the setting and worldbuilding it's created are so strangely alluring.

>>
>>38069628

>>
>>38072701
Well yes, in the context of it being an action.
Something is cringe/worthy/, because is caused you /to cringe/.
Something should not be cringe by itself, but be cringeworthy, being made to cringe is what happens from that, and is a prerequisite.
So yes, wince is a good alternative, but cringe is not a verb.

In a sentence, you could say, 'The man cringed, the man was visibly cringing'.
But to say 'The man cringe' or 'The man was visibly cringe'. Is incorrect. The second is only 'correct' in internet meme usage or slang.

Nevertheless, "to cringe" is a verb. Your grammar constructions are just shit. 'The man will cringe when he sees this.'
To compare: 'The man eat, the man was visibly eat' are also both incorrect, that doesn't mean 'to eat' isn't a verb.
>The man was visibly cringe
This one specifically uses "cringe" as an adjective, which is its 'incorrect' internet slang sense, yes. It's not attempting to use it as a verb at all.

the transformation of verbs to adjectives, and adjectives to verbs (and both to and from nouns) is a normal feature of the English language. You're trying to deny a core element of grammar while whining about grammar.
>>
>>38072848
I'm not denying anything, I'm stating a fact that cringe by itself, is incorrect, because the full term is cringeworthy.
Simple as, and it won't change because the internet memes it.
>>
>>38072831
Yes so you agree that "cringe" is a valid verb. It obviously can't be used as an adjective, I absolutely agree there, but as a verb, "cringe" is a perfectly good word. Do you agree?

>But in that context it should be
No, your example is past tense, mine is future tense. I'm not sure what point you're making there.
>>
>>38072860
Cringe as an action, yes. /To/ cringe.
But >>38072853
One cannot /be/ cringe. They can only be cringeworthy.
They can cringe, but not be cringe.
>>
>>38072867
Alright, sounds like we agree.
I just don't understand why in one sentence you say
>cringe by itself, is incorrect
and in the next
>Cringe as an action, yes. They can cringe
So you basically agree that cringe by itself is correct. If USED correctly. But the fact that it's often used incorrectly doesn't make the statement "cringe by itself is incorrect" true, since it can still be used correctly.

I think that's the root of the entire agument.
>>
>>38072853
you're claiming that your position is correct, despite that position being opposed to the natural evolution of the language.
cringe is a backformation of cringeworthy. cringworthy itself is a compound of Wcringe" and "worthy". it is something worthy of a cringe, or worthy of a cringing reaction.
>>
>>38072876

If used correctly cringe is correct in the action, not standing alone.

There was the mix up with the other anon, if that was another anon, contexts and all that, but there was agreement on usage.
However there was no argument beyond 'Language can change'.

He's right though.
Yes, it's true, language can change, but that doesn't make all slang and corruptions automatically correct. It still takes time for language to change. Maybe in 20 years "cringe" will enter dictionaries as a noun and an adjective. Or maybe within the next decade it will be forgotten. Or maybe it'll survive but basically become firmly entrenched as a slang word and remain like that for the foreseeable future, never becoming "mainstream accepted".

But right now, it is very much slang, and very much grammatically incorrect for normal English.

if you don't like the word, then you don't like the word. that's fine. you're allowed to dislike things for whatever reason you want. insisting it's incorrect grammar, when the opposite is the case, is trying to give a false weight of authority to your personal preference.

>>
>>38073370
Yeah, I'm ESL. And it's fantasy, so that gives him a license to use some older words. (But so with Equestria).

>The last of Mort’s fellow hopefuls had vanished hours ago. He was a wall-eyed young man with a stoop and a
running nose, and Sheepridge’s one licensed beggar had pronounced him to be ideal material. The lad on the other
side of Mort had gone off to be a toymaker. One by one they had trooped off—the masons, the farriers, the
assassins, the mercers, coopers, hoodwinkers and ploughmem
If you were wondering, a mercer does textile, and a cooper works with barrels.
On the same theme, I'm told carters are people who drive horse carts.

>Now he sees the grassy country on the turnwise slopes of the mountains
Now I'm fairly certain turnwise is a made up word. I can sort of guess from context, but the thing is I have no way to tell!

>The eyesockets turned towards him, their actinic pinpoints flaring.
Actinic is about ultraviolet light or something, but when you google it you get pictures or horribly irradiated skin.
It just means that Death has lazor eyes.

it's not just obscure medieval jobs and gratuitous thesaurus usage, most of the words sound perfectly natural the way he uses them and I'm pretty sure I should know most of them anyways.
I guess he just has an impressive command of the English language and he isn't afraid to use it.
>>
>>38073395
Fair enough, most of those aren't bad. I didn't know actinic or mercer.

As for turnwise, I looked it up quickly and apparently it's indeed a made up concept about the Discworld specifically. Allegedly the discworld rotates and so turnwise is in the direction of the rotation.

>>38073511
If they do it must be extremely ancient history, before the three tribes had really risen and sunk to their latter degradation as the windigos ran wild.
Maybe it wasn't so simple as pegasi deciding to flood the world, but the good cause they had for doing it lingers evilly beneath the waves, and as time rolled on and the event faded from memory the word persisted, only to one day be chanced upon by a studious unicorn whose etymological pursuit to follow would drag her into black arcades of knowledge millennia untrodden by sane hooves, careening through infinities of unwholesome lore, to glimpse for one insane moment beyond the sight of humble equinity to its ultimate and unenviable conclusion. And then drive her to abuse opium and chuck herself out of her apartment window during a bad trip, or get jostled by some nautical looking ziggers or something.

This one actually has an etymology. Words with greek and latin words I can deal with.
It's when people like Rambling Writer brings out the trochees, the dactyls, and the epicenes, there's a slight level up in guessability
>>
>>38073621
Isn't dactyl a latin word too? It's part of dinosaur names and those are all pseudogrecolatin
>>
>>38073596
I should've specified that I meant that specifically in the context of Lovecraft's writing.
>>
>>38073631
Yeah, but it means finger. As in dactylography.
But go figure that the word is about metrics in poetry from just that.

Epicene also technically is greek. The epi- prefix usually means "near" or "upon", and then other part is from the Greek "koinos" (common).
Unless you have 400IQ, good luck guessing from epi + cene is supposed to mean "common to both (genders)", meaning androgynous or non-sex specific.

Some words are easier to guess than others.
>>
>>38073631
It is - dactylus - but Pteradactyl I presume derives its dactyl from a similar ancient Greek word that might mean finger or toe, ptera meaning winged. That's my guess anyway.
>>
>>38073654
I guess it's because of the structure of the bones.
The "fingers" and "arms" are the wing bones, like our birds (which IIRC descend from actual winged dinausors)
>>
>>38073631
IIRC the word "tactile" also derives from it, since "dactylus" means finger.
>>
>>38073670
You made me curious. They say tactile is from old latin verb "tangere", which has its root in Proto-Indo-European "tag-" prefix (poking things)
Dactyl is from ancient greek and of unclear origin before that, while the latin word for finger is "digitus" (which has its own proto-indo-eu root)
So, it's a mess
>>
>>38073650
>Yeah, but it means finger
Ohh, that explains polydactyly
>>
>>38073715
There's etymology everywhere if you look!
The last word that surprised me is priority (deciding what comes prior to what)
Equations are about equating things.
Tidy is orderly, like the tides! (tide-y)

Once you see it you can't stop looking

That's a pretty good one. This is kind of dumb, but I was impressed by the author's decision to leave the big edgy clusterfuck of a war as part of the backstory. I feel like many authors would be tempted to show more of that on screen, which wouldn't have helped the story. I wasn't as big a fan of the sequel, but Twilight busting out the bilocation spell stood out to me as a nice example of making a character seem smart without going full rationalfic with their internal monologue.

What happened with Knighty anyway? Crushing loneliness and deep regret. This is a few years old, so who knows how accurate it still is, but it seems like him abandoning his video game development dreams are at the root of a lot of the problems. It turned Fimfiction from a fun web development hobby to his full time job, stressed him out, and made him bitter and cynical since the userbase hates 90% of the shit he does to the site.

>>38076309
It was never really clear what genfic was. That's why there was so much anxiety over it. If the two were going to be separate, why strip out all the comfy pone UI elements and add in these franchise tags to Fimfiction?

I want to nominate:
-Fallout: Equestria (Kkat)
Gateway drug. This got me into MLP in the first place. It does action really well, has awesome art, and good characters. The blend of the two worlds spawned a whole new fandom.
-The Celestia Code (iisaw)
It shows you how rich MLP can be if you take the characters and setting seriously. The author spares no detail in their descriptions, from geography to magic to technology. Can't get enough of it.
-Lost Time (bookplayer)
Never knew how good shipping fics could be before this one. A realistic take on marriage.
-The Best Night Ever (Captain Chryssalid)
I love "Groundhog Day" style fanfiction. The gradual evolution of the MC and their ascent is handled well. It makes you look at the Mane Six from interesting angles.
-Anthropology (JasonTheHuman)
Addresses the human influences in everyday items used by ponies. A guilty pleasure for me; it takes you on a cool adventure without worrying too much about avoiding plot-convenience.
-Mendacity (Dromicosuchus)
Good-to-excellent characterization. The most striking thing about this fic is the painting of a strange world outside the bounds of civilization. It's a joy to read out loud.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/510256/no-room-in-this-hell
'No Room In This Hell' is the one thousand and seven hundred word prequel to 'But Would Anything Matter?' A zombie apocalypse hits Ponyville. The M6 put up a desperate struggle against their former friends and neighbors.
For what it's worth, I didn't dislike this story. The fight scene, while brief, is fairly tense. Dash's struggle against Pinkie is sad. I also commend the way the author portrays gore. Death is presented in a fairly unfiltered way, but without going overboard and thus unintentionally turning things comical. The design of the zombie-ponies isn't bad either, though razor-teeth isn't particularly original. I think it might would have had a greater impact, if the author took some more time in detailing how messed up their appearance is.
On the other hand, this story feels like an "unfortunate middle child," so to speak. It neither really begins the overarching plot, nor ends it. Instead, it just drops the audience in the middle of action, giving little context or explanation to why things are the way they are. Similarly to its sequel, it too doesn't really go into details about where the infection began or how it got to Ponyville. Which to me implies that perhaps the author either didn't consider it important (which would be a bit of a shame) or intends to write one more episode, an origin story of sorts. Something like that could tie things together nicely, however, until that happens, we're left with things mostly hanging in the air, which I can't help but find a bit frustrating.
Still, at the risk of sounding melodramatic, the fic's fatal flaw is its length. The author is good at writing prose. Other than the creatures perhaps needing a bit more elaboration, things are described well and the writing plays heavily into invoking the feelings of despair. However, due to the shortness of this story, said feeling just doesn't have time to really run its course. In less than two thousand words four of the M6 is brutally murdered or turned. That is, in my opinion, simply not enough time for the reader to really become invested. It's not that I felt indifferent to the characters' suffering, but the story ended before things really sank in and thus I don't really feel as shocked or saddened as I could.
Overall: 5/10 If you're just looking for some carnage and despair, packaged in one small bundle, you'll most likely enjoy this story. However, if you're looking for greater substance and context, you'll be left wanting. My recommendation ultimately comes down to which group of the two you belong.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/507125/any-port-in-a-storm
'Any Port in a Storm' is a four thousand and five hundred word oneshot. Stygian is visited by Discord and Luna to discuss the two ponies' different, yet similar corruption.
What immediately caught my eye about this story was the way it was written. The author fills every single paragraph with such character, that's rare in fanfics. Clever use of literary anthropomorphism, metaphors and just straight up flowery descriptions make this story a delight to read. The actual narrative is fairly simple, but I'm not saying this as a negative. I admit, I never really liked Stygian as he appeared in the show. He was probably one of the weakest characters in terms of establishment. While he did have a backstory, post-redemption he was basically written out of the plot and was hardly ever seen again. It's pretty hard to care about him. However, the way this story weaves this disappearance into its plot and further fleshes him out was really nice to see. This is what I would say an originally uninteresting character done justice. Still, the main star of the story is Discord. He's deeply whimsical, the author depicts his powers in creative and varied ways, yet I also appreciated that when the story turns more serious, he's turned down a notch as well and focus is put on his more serious and ancient side instead. All this in a way that never forgets what the character is like. I'm not sure if I'd call this the best Discord depiction I've seen yet, but it's definitely up there.
Luna, on the other hand, feels like the weakest of the trio. This still doesn't mean that she's bad, the way she's depicted is still fairly good, but compared to how amazing the interactions of Discord and Stygian were, I felt like her appearance threw a slight bump into the narrative. The way she recounts her corruption, while arguably necessary for the plot, feels like something we have heard for a thousand times before. The author's theory/headcanon on corruption is interesting, but the almost complete retread of S01E01's / S04E01-2's backstories felt slightly tackled on compared to everything else. I'm not sure I'd go as far as to say her inclusion was a mistake, as her other interactions aren't bad, but the fact that author only chose to include her partly into writing the fic is definitely noticeable.
Overall: 8/10 This is a character-exploration through and through. If you want high-action and a massive cast, this isn't a story for you, but if you prefer introspection and just a handful of characters under the magnifying glass, I can highly recommend this story.

>review https://www.fimfiction.net/story/510248/home
'Home' is a two thousand and one hundred word oneshot set in the Crystal War alternate universe. The war is over, Sombra is defeated, Pinkie is taken in by Applejack as she doesn't want to go home.
What I really like about this story is that it doesn't ignore the fact that just because the conflict is over, things won't suddenly dramatically improve. While the author doesn't put too big of an emphasis on it, the reader can still discern that Ponyville is run-down and that it will take quite some time till things go back to how they were. While the author mentions in the description that the prequel isn't necessary to understand this story, I think this is somewhat untrue. While yes, the main plot is clear from reading just this fic, I think the previous story helped establish just how bad things are in a way that I'd personally consider necessary. Regardless, the story's main theme of slow healing is very bittersweet. Seeing how two hurt individuals connect with each other through their pain and slowly work through their grief to look forward is a fairly realistic feeling and dignified depiction of a post-war story. The letter-scene in the very first section of the story was especially well done in my opinion. The bit about AJ not beng able to perfectly seal the letter was a bit on the nose, but I enjoyed the metaphor regardless.
My enjoyment was somewhat diminished abruptly at the end of the story. As you may know, I'm not really a romance-fic reader, so please do consider the following with a massive mountain of salt, but the story ending with AJ and Pinkie kissing was just so... Hollywood, I guess. This isn't an "ew gay" reaction, don't get me wrong, I don't have an issue with the two finding love in each other, it's a logical conclusion to the story. Rather that it happens so suddenly. The last section of the fic condenses a massive amount of time into just a few paragraphs and it hurts the previous subtlety and solemnness of the story. I would have also liked to see Pinkie slowly warming up to AB or visiting the city proper and talking to some other ponies who weathered the war. A few thousand extra words spent on further broadening our views of the post-war Equestrian society would have likely elevated this story much higher. Also, I do kind of miss an explanation of how exactly Pinkie survived. The previous fic makes it fairly clear that she has given up and won't even yell for help, so how come she not only survived, but was patched up so well to return "home?"
Overall: 6/10 A nice enough sad, but not depressive fic, that you can finish in minutes. If you intend to read it, I'd recommend first going over its prequel, however.

See I was thinking of writing a story within the HiE genre but with HEAVY use of Metacontextualization and a heavy AVOIDANCE of irrationalism.

In other words, you get a character with a few basic traits:
---He exists within our own timeline here on earth, as one specific, not overtly boring but not overtly significant individual, very much self-respecting but with flaws, a hardened horsefucker and longtime brony, with a decent amount of information on larger fandom activity.
---He feels he has NO RIGHT to interact with anypony, especially the M6, in context to "not being worthy" or worse yet, "worrying about messing with the canonical timeline"
---And more specifically, his life is current to this year, Jan 2022 or later, but his arrival/isekai'd-ness is <location non-significant> but canonically sometime just before the ending of S3.

In other words, without it being played for laughs, he'd be very, very well aware he is not supposed to be in Equestria, but from a rational perspective of believing himself either dead or in a brain-coma, he does his best to keep his distance WITHOUT being a reclusive faggot.
All the meanwhile writing letters to (you) to see if you can hear him.
>>
>>38079231
I saw one fic somewhat like that but he arrived right before season one and wanted to fix the timeline rather than avoid tampering with things. The story was dead last time I checked. I don't remember what it was so I can't help you there either.
But also seconding the request for if anyone else knows of anything like this.

>>
>>38079339
That was sort of the intention. The idea was he wouldn't try to DIRECTLY prevent Twilicorn, but he would heavily object to it and even take it up with Celestia directly about the unethical-ness of the whole ordeal.

Speak of the devil... Not soon after posting that comment I saw this in the featured box having over a hundred likes and no dislikes, so i decided to check out what sort of stuff I usually avoid.
The funny (or perhaps sad) thing is that had this story featured two of the M6 or, heaven forbid, two OCs, it would've worked just as well, if not better. While it's not an especially memorable story, it's mostly well written in terms of prose and conveying emotions. Also as tired of a trope the old "one friend gets through to other friend who has issues with opening up" is, it's still a fairly good archetype. It just so happens to feature two characters I couldn't care less about, one of whom speaks in a manner that actively irritates me.

I recommended Redheart's War as well a few threads ago, but it was turned down because I'd needed to write something to go with it. So, then...
Despite being from 2020, I'd call this one a modern classic. If you want a pony warfic, this should be a quintessential one. It depicts a young Redheart in his army days, going through a bloody campaign against slavers and pirates far from Equestria. And when I say bloody, I don't just mean it as a turn of phrase. The fic is very gory, which is in good part due to the fact we see events happening through a first pony perspective. As a combat medic, Redheart knows too well how to describe injuries, and spares no detail to do so. Actually, this is one of the few fics where the violence alone would justify an M rating. I can actually imagine the author was going for some Saving Private Ryan vibes with that.
All in all, I found this one an engrossing fic. Redheart herself sustains many injuries, and due to a good story stucture, and nice prose (which, while descriptive enough, never turned purple) you can feel for the poor mare, and root for her, and you worry about her, despite knowing she survives (the fic uses a journal-like format, as Redheart recounts the events of the campaign to her husband). Another thing that should be pointed out, is how well the fic is paced: it is only 46k words, yet tells a well-rounded story, which almost never felt rushed, or skipping over important details. A big rec from me, only avoid it if you can't take gore with your ponies.

This is an early one, from 2012. "The Sun Whispers Your Name" is an adventure fic, featuring Twilight and Luna, where they enter a comatose Celestia's mind to figure out what's happening, and try to save her. The fic has an epic feel, despite being only 32k words, the author makes a good job of establishing a little pocket realm that is Celestia's mindscape. The fic very closely focuses on Twilight and Luna, but it's not a tunafic, which might be a relief to those who are searching for interactions with these two that don't turn into romance. The story features exploration, action, some philosophical stuff, and a twist ending, although in retrospect, many would see it coming. All in all, it's commendable how many features of a good adventure story is crammed into this one, despite its relatively short length.

There. I think these two should be good starters for any just getting into pony fanfiction, in their respective genres. Neither is long, so it won't overwhelm the reader, but provides a good experience. I, for example, read the latter when it was released for the first time, yet came to my mind immediately when I read "starter fic recs".

Yes, please! Aside from Princess Celestia, Twilight is basically Princess Luna's only friend. I would kill for more Twilight/Princess Luna Adventure or SoL stories that don't devolve into stinky Tuna. Feels like every single time the two are featured it has to be a romance fic.

If you know how to ride a man, the tack and posture are going to be almost identical for a woman. Main difference is that on average women are going to be able to carry a smaller load than men, so unless you're particularly scrawny, it might be tricky or even downright impossible to ride some women without risking injury.
