Welcome friends, ITT:
We make and share pony content, be it art, music or something completely different, with absolutely no pressure to deliver anything that's technically good (besides having ponies in which makes it good automatically anyway)

An in-depth tutorial on how one can draw show-faithful ponies, created by a local Anon:
Part 1: https://u.smutty.horse/mezmjzlknkd.png
Part 2: https://u.smutty.horse/mezmjzmlzsh.png

one post I saw on another thread a while ago had some helpful advice look up >>37916248 in desuarchive and this video about making long smooth strokes with your arm instead of sketching with your wrist or making a bunch of shorter lines that helped me out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s72RpWJjfgg
try zooming in and using all the space you have on your screen to make a long, smooth line in one quick motion. If you're using a mouse, try lowering your mouse sensitivity while you're drawing
you could also try tweaking the settings of the stabilizer, but I think this anon >>38007811 last thread had a really good point about avoiding the stabilizing/smoothing as much as you can
you can do it anon! don't give up, just figure out what works for you and try again!
>>
>>38036170
Yes, use your elbow, not your wrist.
And if you have to use a mouse, lower sensitivity, and TURN OFF ACCELERATION. It's the worst part of drawing by mouse.

To color in paint without layers: Set Color 1 to the white, and Color 2 to your color of choice. Switch to the eraser tool and right click to color. This also works to recolor stuff, just set the colors appropriately. Cute ponk anon

>>38036812
I've been wanting to get into gamedev, that sounds fun! I'd love to help in whatever way I can
>>
>>38036856
By "lonely endeavor" I didn't mean having multiple anons working on the same project, lol. I just meant it would be cool to have multiple anons posting little shitposty games at once, just like how this thread started with ms paint doodles.
>>
>>38036866
checked and ok, that makes sense. Do you have any guides or tips for starting out? Recommended engine or anything?
>>
>>38036886
Well, if you know how to code then hypothetically any engine would work. I haven't actually chosen one yet, I came from a different one and I'm hoping to pick the same one as other anons or something.
>>
>>38036886
>>38036907 (me)
I'm thinking we could choose an engine (I personally would prefer something 2d-focused), and do mini game-jam-sized games. I myself would probably limit to making a game in less than a day.
We could upload them to itch or something, that's an easy way to go about it. There's lots of free software out there, so anons could use those for music/art etc.

As for engines, I just know of:
>Godot
free, open source, good for 2d but not as equipped for 3d according to some guy on the internet I heard talk about it once
>Unity
the one everyone uses, free for small projects, good for 3d but 2d is weird iirc, closed source
>libgdx
open source, no editor, pure code-based game engine (though editors are available) (I wanna try this one)
>Gamemaker studio
no coding required, last time I checked it's not free but it's good for novices apparently. Good for 2d.

There's others too, like pygame or whatever the fuck unreal engine is. Use google if none of these pique your interest.
>>
>>38036959
That guy on the internet somewhere was probably correct at that point in time, but Godot's 3d layer is improving steadily. And unlike Unity, it's not a labyrinth of deprecated apis that are in various stages of going away in the future releases.
>>
>>38037220
Oh, nice. If other anons want in on this and are interested in godot I'd be down. I just wanna make games with and for friends, for pete's sake.
>>
>>38036907
>>38036959
>>38037272
I do have coding experience, and Godot would work great for me. I actually already have it installed, I just haven't gotten around to making anything with it yet. I did a bunch of research on it a while back, and >>38037220 is right, it's come a long way and it's pretty good these days from what I can tell
has /mlp/ ever had game jams in the past? It seems like something I've heard of before

Unironically, how do I get consistent? Do I just sit here and draw circles until my wrist falls off? I'm willing to do that, but fuck man. If I go too fast it goes everywhere, if I go slow I develop Parkinson's.
>>
>>38041104
nope just draw the pony and the rest of it.
I have ADHD not really just get bored easily and I can't stand just sitting there redrawing fucking circles all day. Try experimenting with a few and starting your arcs from different angles. Try sweeping from the left to the right, or from the right to the left. I find that going from right to left starting my stroke upwards works better for me.

Cute mare! Those are some extreeeme eyelashes.

cute! it looks like there's a lot going on here, though. too many tiny details too close together, in my opinion. I think it would look nice with half the amount of hair squiggles (maybe just alternate left and right?) and simplifying the eyes a bit. eye spirals, pac man eyes, or spiral eyelashes, choose one. Or maybe two, but it might be hard to pull it off

I was watching this dude showing how to draw mouths and noses and whatever, and he concluded his video by saying there are many types of mouths and the only way to make sure you can draw them all is through practice.
He then proceeded to present his sketchbooks containing dozens upon dozens of mouths and it all seemed very impressive.
Finally, he asks: "Do you know what 2000 circles looks like?" and starts whipping out these. Excuse my vulgarity, but holy shit.
Needless to say it was very humbling and puts the idea of serious practice in perspective.

>>
my second honest try at drawing a pony (a character sheet for a TTRPG). I like it!

here was my first for reference:
>>37903888

no practice in between tries, plus it's been a few years. this time around, I tried drawing circles but after the body came out with a boat shape with weird legs, I erased everything but the head and just looked back and forth from what I was drawing to the reference drawing "How to draw pony 'Friendship is Magic' Style" ( like the third image in https://imgur.com/a/m7zQ2 or so [frame 4 where it shows the full pony form with the circles and reference lines inside]).

I guess pencil and paper is the way to go for me. I would have put more detail on the prosthetic if I wasn't drawing so small, which seems to be another problem for me: drawing small. The bigger the drawing, the exponentially worse it gets. Also, I found the idea of drawing mechanical stuff and machines and tools easier and less intimidating. I could probably scribble out a toy robot pony for Tripod there, all boxy shaped and be fine, but organic curves get me.

A mare's head is a circle and sometimes an oval if they're looking at you from a front facing view, especially if their mouth is open. There's literally nothing wrong with making them circular because you're leaning more towards the show's style. Nothing wrong with breaking the shape up with features like cheeks and stuff if you like those looks, but it's silly to blindly avoid a circular head.
>>
>>38071129

Ideally I could have clarified that in the eyes of the animators, that is in fact the front facing view. Anything that isn't the commonly used 45 degree angle or side angle is the front angle, and they'll almost always give them ovular heads for the front angle. Maybe I could have used an example that would be easier to understand as well, but the rule applies 99.9% of the time in the show.

It can also apply to fan art, where it is pefectly fine using a circular head shape for angles that aren't the 45 or side angles.
>>
>>38071210
>It can also apply to fan art, where it is pefectly fine using a circular head shape for angles that aren't the 45 or side angles.
Excuse my retardation. I mean that it's fine using a circular head shape, assuming the bottom jaw and muzzle aren't going to be breaking it up.
>>
>>38071210
Pony anatomy is hard.
>>
>>38071233
Yeah, it is. I bet heads are probably the most varied body part amongst artists and their preferences for drawing them. Show style heads don't seem to work well in 3d space, so you kind of have to do things differently for different angles, especially if you try to render it at an unusual angle. Practice with 3d shapes and see what you'd like to try. Experimenting is fun and part of the path to getting better. I've been experimenting with muzzles for a while and have been enjoying what heads look good.
Sorry for calling you retard. That was my own autism instead you being a retard.

The average artist (especially newbs) is dumb as bricks. DAB has ultra-digestible content that is solely focused on building solid fundies rather than getting immediate results. It's better structured and constantly updated.
All of these big name courses are ill-fit for the average person who has no clue on how to properly align ellipses along a line.

Most people don't want to learn how to draw, they want to learn "how to draw thing" and so they look for shortcuts that will get them to drawing the thing faster, even if it means they don't learnt he fundamentals that will serve them well for drawing everything else, or even help them draw the thing better and easier. Instant gratification is what people want.

Didn't someone else try doing it on an Aggie canvas and it was unable to handle everyone joining in? Also even when there were like 5 people all drawing on it at once it ended up being somewhat sluggish.

If the drawpilefag is here and knows how to set it up we can test it today and tomorrow just to see if we can actually fit a lot of people on. I'll see if it can really handle a sizable amount of people

Ok, so I'm working on a little idea here that popped up to my mind to go on with a side pone rpg project while I get back to work on my rogue-like pone game because I kind of got stuck with a script..
I feel like the megaman battle network battle system is a bit too forgotten and using the hell bullet curtain thingie for any rpg would make people offended because Undertale and Deltarune are super popular. So I was thinking about exactly what you read, a tiled action battle system rpg with pones.
I was thinking on a small 3x3 for each side. But instead of controlling a single pone, you'd have a party up to 3. The idea is that you'd have to switch between pones to move them to evade attacks hinted by your enemies, keeping in mind to not obstruct the movement of your pones with the other pones while you wait for the time to strike. Sounds weird?
>>
>>38090750

drawpile was a sucess! I think we can move on to actually setting up a panel thing, who wants to host and or do the thing?
>>
>>38096020
a few ideas I had in mind
>tons of anons just drawing together, with a host commentating on what's going on in different parts of the canvas (and just generally keeping viewers entertained)
>experienced artist(s) teach basics of drawing pony (maybe teaching a few anons on a call, like AnonTheAnon's /mare/con panel)
>prompts/challenges that everyone has to draw (maybe with a time limit?)
>one anon makes a big sketch of a pony, and everyone else has to turn it into a finished piece as fast as possible
>interviews with artists about how they started drawing pone and what helped them improve(?)
>"mare-itory control": canvas starts clear with a handful of tiny ponies scattered throughout it, anons have to pick a pony to draw and make another little drawing of the same pony right next to it. The pony that covers the most of the canvas once its full wins drawings that are too big can get deleted or shrunken down, or maybe it could just be on a grid?
in my mind the drawpile would be active and open to anyone while any of these are going on

most of my drawing is done on the aggie and the sketch is just fucking gone
i'm sure it only looked better to me because the issues were just less visible to me, like the legs coming out of nothing and everything about the mane
also i tried to make the lines thicker than the sketch and that just doesn't seem to work when it's this small anyway
i had and have nothing productive to say really i am just whining
>>
>>38097657
>Finished piece looks worse than the sketch
I've definitely had that happen to me before, maybe it's just the feeling that the sketch has so much potential, and the final version is final, it just is what it is
I think I remember seeing another anon use one sketch to make several different drawings, that might be a good way to practice going from sketch to finished piece
>>38097998
not sure what the sketch looked like, but this looks great! the only nitpicks I can come up with are maybe making the ear a bit bigger, the eye a bit smaller and a tiny bit further forward, and making the mane go a bit further down the neck
>sketch is gone
what happened to it? Did you draw over it? Was it not in another layer? I'd recommend always sketching in another layer so you can reference it or start over if you make a mistake
seriously though, nice drawing. It makes me wonder how hard it would be to make a mare mod for OpenRCT

It always will. Sketches hide all of the flaws of an image. Your brain gets less to work with and uses its imagination to fill in the details. It's why it's harder to spot bad anatomy when drawing real life being in the sketch phase.

try zooming in and doing quick, long strokes with your pen. Make big motions with your whole arm to draw instead of just moving your wrist. Don't be afraid to use the tools built into your drawing program of choice to mirror or rotate your canvas to draw at an angle that works better for you
in pic related, I drew the left poner by moving my pen very slowly and thoughtfully, squiggles will happen there no matter what. Right pony was just with quick, broad strokes, and the lines ended up much more smooth. Proportions are a little skewed, but starting with a sketch and ctrl+z until your lines match up well will help with that

Well, some of them are out of order: >>38105720 is from Dec 5th, >>38101088 (color pencils over sketch on a light pad) is from a couple of days later. The green fineliner ones are most recent.

I am supposed to know that nose-to-butt is 2 head diameters long, but some of the things I haven't measured are the chest and the ears. I am learning to draw the hind leg now.

Nose length seems to be 10-15% of the head size, depending on the angle. Of course, it's hard to measure on a 4 cm pony. I guess getting more colored pens wouldn't be worth it: the usual 0.4 mm is not easier to fill with than the hard-ish color pencils, and on a bigger drawing, even the edge is thick compared to that.

Architecture is easier. It's lot's of straight lines and what do you need for straight lines? That's right, only two points.
Since there are no straight lines in nature this means organic forms consist only of curves. And curves require many more points to be defined before you can create one of them.

alright, my 4th try at drawing a pony...
first try was MS Paint, second was on paper in a 2in square, third was on my phone with the stylus and doodle app (a step back in my opinion). and then finally, the big one. looks like I'll be getting me a good sketch pad to practice on.

Where to go from here? I think I'll keep doing the same basic pose until I can get it down without having to go back to the tutorial, then move on to a different pose?

I can tell the overall body isn't quite right, but I'm not exactly sure where to adjust. would someone mind doing what was done here: >>38108230 for me, please, where you draw over it with better lines so I can better see it? I'd greatly appreciate it, thanks!

ok, I'll give this a shot in a little bit. Might not have too much to say, though, this is already looking pretty good
>Where to go from here?
I had the same question last thread, (>>38033605) a few anons suggested trying to visualize and draw stuff more in 3d, and one anon made a great tutorial to get started with that (the second tutorial in the OP) I'd recommend trying to experiment with different poses and angles before settling into too much of a comfort zone, or leaning too much on symbol drawing (again, see second tutorial)
The important thing is that you just keep drawing, though. Doesn't matter too much what it is, just don't stop!

any experienced artists out there that could give some general advice? I'm wondering if I should start putting some of my drawings on one of the boorus, and kind of just generally how I should organize everything that I draw. How do you stay organized? How much of your art do you share, and where do you share it? Any other "big picture" tips on managing stuff like that?
I imagine the answer is probably that it doesn't matter too much, but I just want to be smart about it
>>
I tries drawing a G5 character in the artstyle from those “I Can Read” comics and it was a complete disaster. So embarrassed that I won’t even post picture.

I can't be more hellish than the actual art style from those books, post it.

Colored with crayons (wax pencils). Apparently crayon drawings need to be large.
>>

>Apparently crayon drawings need to be large.
somewhat, but it also helps to have high-quality crayons. some are waxier than others and will take off the color they just put down while you're trying to fill stuff in. Crayoning should be a smooth experience. if they feel sticky on the paper, try a better brand?
>>
>>38128095
ooo crayons! I want more multimedia variety for this thread like that. Definitely want to see more

I honestly prefer this over the source material, nice job anon!
>>38127182
I can't get over how good the general shapes in this one are; the perfect flopped ear, the very boopable muzzle, the eyes perfectly sized for the angle of the head, all stuff I've been trying to improve on. Great job!
>>38128016
nice to have you back! That's a really complicated mane style, but you pulled it off really well!
>>38128095
what a cutie! yeah in my experience crayons aren't great for tiny details, and drawing bigger actually gives you some more wiggle room too (it also allows you to draw with your whole arm instead of just your wrist, giving you some smoother lines and better curves)
>>
>>38128110
They don't feel sticky, but they do push pigment forward if I move them along and not across.
It's an "I'm an artist!" set from Nevskaya Palitra. Reviewers mostly complain about them breaking, not things like that.
>>
>>38128320
Thanks.

Also decided to clean out my drawer at work today. All of these have been shoved in there for awhile. Trying to think of what to do with them. Any ideas?

>>
>>38129017
write the dates (or your closest guess) of when you drew them on the back of each one, then keep them in a small box. It'll be cool to go through them later as you improve
>>
I originally wanted to draw a Mount and Blade: Band companion as a pony, then I wanted to draw that in Whiterun who questions whether your “Graymane or Battleborn”, and somehow I ended up at this. I drew this in low light so I messed up shape of the head.

Decided to take some time tonight and try to really focus in on making a scene. This is by far my favorite thing I've drawn so far.
Could I get some critique on it? The main body looks a little wonky and the legs look off. Trying to figure out what I should improve on.
>>
>>38130099
Tried something new with ears; instead of having them start in middle of eyes, I raised it to where the top of the eyes.
>>
>>38130441
I think this position for the ears looks pretty good. The entire face structure being more rounded also looks really good here too. Honestly it's probably my favorite face from you so far
>>

>The entire face structure being more rounded also looks really good here too. Honestly it's probably my favorite face from you so far
Oh. I’ve been trying and struggling to slim down the faces. Normally, I use circles as a base. I’ve tried using ovals as a base, but those are harder for me to do. Thanks for the compliment, though. Here is a Fluttershy I drew with the same ear thing.
>>
>>38130537
Cute! Yeah the slimming down of the faces definitely looks way better I think

>>
>>38130437
very nice, anon! Her eye and mane look especially pretty to me. I guess I still haven't even attempted backgrounds for my poners, they all just get stuck in the void
>>38130537
cute! these just keep getting better!
I've learned to avoid being a slave to whatever circle I sketch to start out, it can be very helpful to figure out where everything belongs, but as soon as you figure that out, don't be afraid to break away from it to shape the face how you want it. Comes in handy especially when drawing faces at different angles

Hello, it's me again, that one guy with MSPaint who draws random M A R E S

Last time, I drew Anon Colt. This time, a close up of a very sensual looking M A R E. As per usual, if you have any suggestions/critique/better color scheme, let me know.

I ran out of ideas, so please, suggest a SFW full body pose for this mare. I will then try my best at drawing that mare, so she can join her friends

This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for! It helps visualize what specifically needs work like proportions. Thank you for doing that. I’ll definitely have a go at some of the guides
>>
>>38130905
Smug Chryssi is perfect. Also is the coloring supposed to look like water colors? I really like it for some reason
>>
>>38131173
She is pretty! Maybe draw her happily frolicking through a meadow? Or maybe cooking something?
The only thing that sticks out to me is the eyes highlights. The placements look reversed. I love the mane personally.

hair looks perfect, but I think the coat color is a little bit too saturated. If you look at other pink ponies from the show, like pinkie and diamond tiara, you'll notice that their coat color is very tame, maybe you could use that for reference?
>SFW full body pose
draw her walking to the market to get some groceries, maybe with a purse or saddlebags and if you want it a little spicy have her walking away and looking back at you

Thanks. It’s only been a few days since I first tried drawing Zipp and I’ve seen some improvement. I’m still figuring out how to draw her eyes, eyebrows, and mane, but I’m still learning. I think I’m going to try and draw the eyes horizontally more often.
