"She's your big sister, it's only natural she'd be worried, don't ya think?"
>"Well sure, I understand that, but I'm more than capable of trekking on my own, I did make it all the way here, after all."
>Meadow's got a point, she's not some helpless filly, she knows what she's doing.
>I doubt Tundra's first thought will be how impressive that is, though.
"Hey I hear ya, you've got the guts to take on a risk, and clearly the skill to be successful. "
>She's jumping up and down in pure joy, nice to see her pep back.
>"You understand me perfectly! If only the others could see it that way as well."
"That being said, I can't fault them for being worried you might be trying to take on a lot on your own."
>"But I have to! For years now we've had few ponies capable of embarking on the long expeditions to the north."
>"Tundra has nearly always been the one who has to leave the village when we run out of supplies, she never gets to rest."
>"She may be the most resilient pony in our village, but she's only one pony, and she's nearly always off on expeditions."
>"The other ponies capable of enduring the journey can't navigate very well, the blizzards make it near impossible to see anything."
"Are blizzards common around your village?"
>"Yes, it makes it difficult to leave our home, but when I once traveled with an expedition led by my sister to Snowpitt, I was able to see pretty well through the snow, which surprised the rest of the ponies."
"Sounds like you've got a real talent then, just like your sister."
>"You really think so? Thank you, that means a lot."
>"It's more than just wanting to prove myself though."
>She looks toward the horizon.
>"I want the village to be able to rely on somepony else for a change."
>She's got a pretty determined look in her eyes now, she's serious about this.
>"Our village is very small compared to the other tribes, we don't have many ponies capable of exploring the land."

I love how the fluting on the columns gives the impression of their being waterfalls, running down and off the platform. If they're ice, they could very well have been, at one point. Although I must confess,
>priscilla
intrigues me; who is she? Does her similar appearance to Cirrus indicate some relation, perhaps? Where are they? What is that place and its purpose? It looks quite remote and either elevated significantly from an other structures or exists alone.
It's amazing and inspiring how one drawing can arouse so many questions and offer tantalising ideas. Especially if the other mare's name is, indeed, 'Priscilla'.

And lest I forget to say (in case it's not already clear), that is beautiful work. The columns as I've said but also their deep blue and that of the platform; the mountains in the distance and what could easily be clouds or snow blanketing the land surrounding them, especially the designs of Cirrus and the other mare.

It's been some years since I've played DS and never did anything related to Ariamis but from what little I recall, integrating Priscilla into snowpones could be interesting. No one's mentioned dragons that far north and considering the climate it wouldn't make sense, anyway. Boreal wyrms or something like that? Or going with her being a crossbreed of windigo, or perhaps something more sinister.
Maybe it is 'just' a beautiful piece of art, prompted by a forlorn character but I still can't help but wonder at Cirrus' presence and am less inclined to believe the drawfag didn't put a lot of thought into it. Is Priscilla her charge or is it something Cirrus does of her own volition? Is she there to bring comfort or to remind Priscilla of why she must remain? Even something as simple as whether Cirrus makes that journey alone or, perhaps, has the aid of the indomitable Ice Elation. Though should anypony ask, she'd surely smile and tell them that Cirrus is the very last mare who needs protecting. Whether that's simply her own perception of Cirrus or the truth, I leave to your interpretation.
I'd like to speculate more but it's already too late here. I hope other Anons might in the meantime.

>>37685150
>Though it's been long since they've seen it, they remember the lights of the fires of their villages. They remember following the stars in life but not how to do it.
>Instead, crystals are laid out through the year to watch the fires of the village crackling and to feel the stars shining their beneficent light upon them.
>On that night of nights, when they gleam with the beauty of the heavens and the warmth of hearts and hearths, they're taken to the forests and gently laid upon the snow.
>The shamans and their apprentices know of the places the spirits reside and do all they might to bring them peace but some wander, uneasy and forgetful of much from life.
>An unfortunate few, however, may have wandered far from the places their bodies rest. Those too lost to be found, even by the shamans, or the places too precarious, the knowledge of that one night guiding their decisions.
>Yes, as some spirits draw closer to the villages the memories begin to return - the music, the songs, the stories, the beautiful sculptures, carvings, and most of all those they knew in life.
>The crystals watched not only the lights but the snowponies who lit them or held them close to their own hearts. When the lost spirits make their gentle trek to the villages, the humming of the crystals is filled with those memories.
>And those unfortunate few are no longer so - they're welcomed with open hooves and warm smiles, kind words and kinder hearts, brought to share in the village's traditions and recount their own.
>A night where the lost are found.
>Where they remember that even in the darkest places, the light of hope still shines.
Thank you for creating such beautiful art, Anon.

Every update from your green I see is an utter joy, Anon. The little tidbits that tantalisingly offer insights into the world are great and the more we see of Meadow Frost, the more there's the feeling of a courageous spirit inspired by her sister guiding her.

>"Tundra has nearly always been the one who has to leave the village when we run out of supplies, she never gets to rest."
>"She may be the most resilient pony in our village, but she's only one pony, and she's nearly always off on expeditions."
That, in particular, got to me. It's clear that Meadow not only admires Tundra and wants to emulate her but she's keen to take the pressure off her. More than that, however, I think what's coming through here is that Meadow is still a filly, one who misses her big sister when she's gone and wants to help her spend more time at home.
As always, looking forward to more!
>>
Tell me about the snow ponies
Why do they attack the boot?
>>
>>37688910
The boot is an abnormality in the realm of the snowpones. It is an unnatural presence that severs the connection between hooves and snow, and causes great distress to one Cold Yeller in particular
>>

The abominable snowmare sounds like a mare who somehow wound up on her own at a very young age and, by the spirits or some other miracle, survived on her own. Also she's abnormally huge. She's not really a threat, barring misunderstandings or acting out during heat. Just a wild mare

>>37685570
I like the idea that the anons, except wild anon obvs, didn't just reach snowpitt by directly travelling. The Tundra Trekkers and some of the mates accolidentally caught them in an avalanche. Last thread I mentioned Snowpitt being the central ceremonial ground to all tribes. Our main, core OCs are the tribe that actually lives there. If we have enough core OCs for two tribes then the second tribe is probably a migratory one.

As far as the ritual calling to the lost spirits, its probably one that's practiced by each tribe separately at their own ritual grounds vs everypony travelling to Snowpitt. Even the migratory tribes have sacred sites along their regular routes.

They'd steal non-snowpone boots but you know the foals would only do so to present them to Bundle Up. They don't understand why such a pretty mare wears such ugly, impractical boots. Especially when her coat is so unhealthily light! So naturally big sis' tells them she has just the solution to that.

The next time Rarity sees them she'd probably fight back and lose against the urge to mutter some scathing remark about how her boots must have made for the finest haute cuisine, so she hopes they enjoyed them. The foals don't know what she means with those strange words and they carefully make their apologies for running off so suddenly but they were worried about her. That's why they had these made!
'These' being four soft leather boots, carefully oiled to be as supple as possible and the most fetching shade of brown. The fur lining them, meanwhile, was specially selected both for its softness and insulation and runs down just outside the top to almost mimic the natural and practical feathering of snowpones; white like the rest of her coat, naturally. Arctic Ink wished to add her own little contribution to it and, after hearing what the idea was, Bundle Up was only too happy to allow her sister to do so. On each boot, about halfway down where it could still be seen would be a diamond of Rarity's cutie mark. The dyes from the hardy berries are precious things but for an esteemed guest, an exception was no problem. Of course, to the snowpones the diamonds looked almost like beautiful, stylised snowflakes and so each was set into the shape of a snowflake.
A reminder that she was held within the care of friends.

At her silence the foals might look among each other, unsure as to whether their attempt to rectify her poor hoofwear situation had succeeded. Especially when the mare might start sniffling. But the she's been looking at the boots ever since they gave them to her so it can't be that bad, right? They even brought Bundle Up and Arctic Ink along to explain!
Without a word, however, Rarity would gather them into her forelegs as much as she could and hug them as tightly as possible. Foals were the same wherever one went, it seemed - their hooves may run ahead of their heads but never their hearts.

Can't draw, I'm afraid, but I made a little poem. Hope it's okay.

On a quiet night on the edge of the world
In a frozen hamlet a calm scene is unfurled.
In her home lay Pine Ponder,
A sweet mare full of wonder,
Contemplating the possibility
Of an unknown world, one of mystery.

"What could dwell beyond Snowpitt?"
She wonders as her home is alit,
And in arrives Frosty Flakes
Plus her good friend, Still Lake.
The mares greet warmly and hug
and Pine Ponder provides both a mug.

As she enjoys a piping cup of a self-named brew
One she crafted with love, and shared with her crew,
Pine Ponder asks her friends if they enjoy the tea
They respond in kind with resounding glee.
"No doubt about it, your tea is the best."
"Absolutely agree, it's no contest!"

And Pine Ponder beams bright
Her face full of delight.
For her friends are fully content
And her home has a lovely scent.
They now chat and discuss
What has Pine Ponder in a fuss.

The unknown world that seems so far away,
One that couldn't be reached in just a day.
Pine Ponder begins to speak eagerly
Enthralled by her passion, they listen intently.
She can't help but wonder what lies beyond their home,
"Do you think other ponies live in huts shaped like domes?"

Between sips and snuggles, they speak of possibilities
Of these far off ponies, and of their festivities.
It's a wonderful time shared amongst the three
A heartwarming scene, they all look so happy!
The three friends spend the night together, a lovely image.
It's just another comfy night, in this humble village.

>" It hasn't been easy, and it would be even worse if we didn't have Snowpitt to help."
"That's the village closest to you guys, right?"
>"That's the one. We're very fortunate they're so willing to help us, even when we aren't able to offer much to trade."
"That's pretty cool of them, the villages are pretty tight with each other, huh?"
>"Yes, if it weren't for Snowpitt, our village certainly wouldn't last, and since most ponies can't cross through the blizzards to go elsewhere..."
"Yeah, I get the picture."
>Wow, I had no idea.
>It's really a world of survival out here, to think any part of Equestria could be this rough...
>"We're doing okay for now, but the thought of running out of food is something everypony has on their minds."
>"With more mouths to feed than ponies able to feed them, our supplies keep shrinking every day."
"Isn't there anywhere close by to get supplies while the expedition crew is out?"
>"Our home isn't as abundant in resources compared to the tribes by the rivers or the mountains, the plains don't provide very much."
"I guess that's not surprising, I haven't seen much of anything out here myself."
>"The snow hides a few things we can make use of, but out here there's very little to find, it's why we aren't advised to come this far south."
>"I came anyways to practice foraging, there really isn't much but I was able to find some plants before I came in too deep, I've got them back at my base."
>What a trooper, I can't imagine being just a filly and having this much to worry about.
>These snowponies are something else, being able to survive out here like they do.
>"Anyways, I'm sorry to bother you with all this, I'm not sure what came over me."
"No worries Meadow, it's good to express how you feel about things, sometimes you just need to get your thoughts out in the open."
>"Really? I usually just keep my thoughts to myself, but I guess it did feel pretty good to have somepony hear how I was feeling."
"I'm glad to hear it, if you ever wanna share anything else, feel free. I'm always ready to lend an ear to a friend."
>Her adorable smile is back, I just can't resist giving her a hug.
>"Thanks a lot, Rainbow. Oh, we're almost at my hideout, I really hope you like what I've got!"

POV: you are the spirit of an Equestrian foal lost during a blizzard in one of the northern plains. Even putting one of your ethereal hooves to the snow reminds you of galloping to and fro, calling out to your mother even as your mouth filled with snow and ice from the howling wind. On some nights—the bad ones—you just hide among the trees or try to carve out a shelter in the snow; it's not worth stumbling about in the dark and the wind, remembering how it felt. Nopony comes up here, anyway. No matter how many times you called out, your mother and father never came. That's not the worst, though. The worst is the light.

You hate the light. The light means you have to go away. To that other place where there's no sound and no sight. You tried everything - hiding in the snow, digging your hooves into it, clinging onto the low-hanging branch of a tree even, but nothing ever worked. Now you just wait for it, as you find yourself this morning. There isn't even the sound of the wind to send you off, though, and no clouds to hold back the torrent of the sun. Slowly, agonisingly, you lower your ghostly rump to the ground and wait.

Light spills across the plain, dancing upon the snow; in life it was something you loved, something you rushed to wake each morning just to see. Now you no longer struggle to hold back the tears.
>>
>>37697899
But this morning is different. The sun crests the horizon and you squint momentarily, unused to the sensation. And it feels... warm? How? Why? When was the last time you'd felt that? Felt anything? The last time you'd heard... What is that? Creatures prowl the plains in the darkness, uncaring for a lost and lonely spirit and so you know the sound of snow crunching but what could be out here during the day? And with it comes another sound, one you're sure you could only count upon the wind to offer the most tantalising simulacrum of: a voice. Gentle, lilting, rising and falling rhythmically, tugging at your hooves and mane for you to rise and turn about. why, though? How many times have you seen your father standing just behind the treeline? Or your mother calling you home?

The voice and crunching grow louder and the tugging at your body more insistent. What little courage you can bring to bear, you push to your muzzle and twist into a snarl to face whatever vile thing may be about to prey upon you after this torment. Instead, you're greeted with a sight you'd long since abandoned the hope of ever witnessing: another pony. With a mane and coat like the snow under her hooves she approaches, eyes closed and mouth open singing with a voice purer and sweeter than any you've ever heard. That sensation of being pulled is no longer insistent but like being carried along on a burbling stream and before you realise what's happening you've risen and step towards the mare.

As you approach each other, her voice lowers as she stops and she opens her eyes. The smile you're greeted with is beatific and the wind that whips at her mane offers no challenge to her voice as she says,
"hello, little one!"

Sorry for two posts, it was just over the character limit.

Don’t worry, Anon, it gets worse! You see when the strange white mare speaks those words, you rush over to her and choke back a sob upon seeing her extending a foreleg. You’d dismiss it as a dream but you’ve long since learned that you can’t, especially not in the other place. You throw your hooves out and wrap them around her shoulders. More surprising still, however, is the sensation of her foreleg reaching around your back. The feeling of it, of another pony. Being touched, being held!

“Thank you!” you choke out between wracking sobs, “thank you!”

You don’t care who she is or why she’s here, how she can see you, or how you can touch each other. She saved you from going away. She let you see the light again. She led you from that place, of darkness and solitude, where no coldness greeted your hooves upon the snow. Before you even knew her name, before you knew anything at all about your mysterious saviour. Except the memory of her touch and the way she swept her long mane about your form as she beckoned you close to her body.

The fear returned, though, when you began to walk with her from the plain. There were times when you’d attempted it and found yourself wending through the woods to a place you didn’t know. Every time, however, you began to feel strange, as if something was pulling you back to the plain and with each further step it became harder to focus or to remember. You didn’t even realise you were shivering when the mare stopped and turned down to you, smiling, and told you her name: Cirrus Wisp, and that she would never allow anything bad to befall you again.

She reminded you of the way your mother would speak of Princess Celestia; her brilliant white coat shining in the sun and her regal bearing. But the way Cirrus spoke and even the way she moved, to you, reminded you more of what your father told you of Princess Luna; her kindness and gentleness, how she devoted so much of herself to the care of Equestria’s children.
So you kept your mind to those thoughts as you put a hoof forward and Cirrus resumed walking with you. Through the forest and beyond it.
>>
>>37698617
Where? Why, to her village, of course. While you may not feel like a ‘snowfoal’, you were still more than welcome by its fires. But what was a ‘snowfoal’? Was it because she found you on the snowy plains? When you asked her about that, she’d said you felt… ‘different’ from the others she knew. And when you asked her about /that/, she’d only laughed her beautiful, lilting laugh, ran a hoof through your wispy mane, and said that you felt ‘special’.
You weren’t really sure what she meant by that but it didn’t matter too much in the aftermath of her leaning down to gently nuzzle your cheek. Or how she held you against herself when you started to sniffle again.

Through the forest you went, then, and over hills and past mighty mountains far in the distance. It was nothing you recognised and once more you found yourself leaning in against Cirrus. Sometimes she hummed, sometimes she sang, and sometimes she told you of her village - of its warm fires and gentle hearts, and of the ponies who awaited you there.
There, where you arrived one night after your journey with her. Smoke rose from cabins and only a hoofful of ponies still stirred before the lights of the village. What would they say? Would they even see you? Would they hear you?

But when you first stepped into the village, trembling as you kept pace with Cirrus, the few still awake only greeted her and if they saw you, paid no heed. You wanted to say something, to ask them who they were or… But Cirrus didn’t stop as she made her way through the village. She led you to a cabin nestled towards the rear of it, a warm fire visible in the centre of its interior when she pushed open its door and said, “this is where you will stay now, little one. You need not return from where you came, if you wish not to.”
You could scarce believe it - another pony, a place of warmth and comfort, and if your journey with her was anything to go by, you’d never have to return to the other place again. You pushed your voice as best you could to ask her and in answer, later, when the door to the outside was closed, you found yourself lying by the fire, at Cirrus’ side with the susurration of her song lulling you to sleep, the warmth of her body as your bed and the softness of her mane as your blanket.

Unfortunately, that’s when you stop seeing things from the POV of the spirit-filly and instead find yourself as a spirit-mare making your way to Snowpitt on the night of returning.

How did she even get lost out there? Were her parents traders? Explorers? Hard to see how an Equestrian filly would be in the frozen north. Even with a relevant cutie mark, I'd think there'd be some serious training and preparations to go up there.

That said, this green is giving me a feel. Rest in peace, little filly
>>
>>37698632
I have a few ideas of my own but I'm unsure if it'd be more interesting for readers to draw their own conclusions. Keep in mind that for an Equestrian (at least for how I'm writing this), the southern plains of the snowpone lands would border on the most northerly parts of Equestria and for them would be incredibly harsh, especially later in the year.
However, if you wish to get an idea for what I was thinking, the filly wandered through the blizzard until she collapsed from exhaustion. Where she eventually fell was just close enough for the spirits of the snowpone lands to reach out to her still tender spirit and draw it up towards them. Not out of maliciousness or spite against Equestrians, or greed for themselves, but because they felt the presence of a child who'd been lost and had no hope of finding home or being found. Their hope was that the plains they took her too would offer some familiarity to where she last remembered being but, well, her death was so traumatic that it couldn't offer much in the way of comfort.

But they'd done it and couldn't send her back, not when she was now aware. Perhaps they could commune with a native snowfoal, at least to some degree, but an Equestrian is just different enough to prevent it. So instead they reached out, as they'd planned to, to another that held a strong connection to its land, to find the filly and aid her.

As for what she and her parents were doing there? They're something like a combination of traders and explorers - typically plying routes to the more outlying parts of Equestria. But the maps of that far north weren't as reliable as believed and a freak storm further caused difficulties. They searched for as long as they could afterwards but between the massive build-up of snow and the trouble getting the lay of the land that caused, they couldn't retrieve her body.

So, what happens after the spirits arrive in Snowpit and the night of reunions ends? Do they all pass on to the afterlife or do they hang around for eternity and only really interact with the living on the night (we really need a name for this ceremony/event) every year?

Everyone has their own ideas of what happens, which I prefer rather than insisting 'this is the only right way, fuck the rest of you'. More creativity is better.
Personally, I see them as departing for the snowpone afterlife but may be called back if and when their counsel is needed. I still subscribe to the idea that it's ultimately about giving them a proper send off since so much of the year is spent with snowpone society separate. That and the hall where the figures are kept, serving as a sort of communal burial grounds/"ossuary" of sorts (or whatever you might call a crypt for storing what are essentially votives. A reliquary?).

>>37699211
Praise from Caesar! Unfortunately it's not as detailed and longform as I might like but I'd only originally intended what was meant to be a single post. Maybe I'll go back at some point and give it the proper treatment. Right now this is just a little break from more serious writing.

>>37699213
She'll spend time in the snowpone afterlife, being comforted by those from a society she's slowly acclimated to and become accepted within. But when her parents pass on, she'll depart from there to see them again. I don't see Equestrians as practicing this sort of thing as snowpones do so I'm not sure how she might see her parents when they're still alive. Though if it's only speaking to/seeing them, one or two ideas spring to mind.
>>
>>37698811
Added this to the music archive bin
>>
>>37699186
The way I see the spirits is that the afterlife is more like another village than another world. There's nothing stopping them from venturing out to roam the land and later returning for tea with their ghostly neighbors, but without a physical presence they can't affect much. Which is why guidance from the spirits is so prevalent. From their wanders, they know what's going on in the land and where it is. Where danger lies, where ponies in need of help are, where spirits who can't break the last bonds to their fallen bodies roam; but they are unable to assist themselves. So instead they give subtle pushes to living snowponies.
The last couple months in the year are an exception, when snowpony celebrations blur the line between physical and spiritual for a short time, allowing the living and the recently departed or found, for some spirits, to see and interact with each other.

Here's a poem for Alpine Glow, these are fun to make.

As the morning sun looms over the mountains
And the howling wind echoes throughout the land.
A young pony now descends from the summit
To start on a journey that few can withstand.

From her lonely summit home atop the peaks
To the frosted forests of trees evergreen
Alpine Glow travels in search of adventure
In search of places she has yet to have seen.

In her heart lay the feeling of wanderlust
A desire to explore the great unknown.
Though most all can be seen from the mountain peak
There is one place hidden, a forbidden zone.

She remembers the tales her kin used to tell
Of a lost realm far beyond normal reaches.
Through the hail and the ice she goes heading north
In hopes of finding the fabled snow beaches.

There is said to be an abundance of fish,
And strange avian creatures who like to play,
As well as another one known as a seal
If all these await then she shouldn't delay!

Alpine Glow is strong, she's handled worse before
Even this fierce blizzard is no match for her,
Since she's always got on her favorite poncho
Passed down now for ages, it beats any fur!

And finally through the harshest of blizzards
Alpine Glow arrives to a sight for sore eyes
The legends, they were true, the beach is right there!
Overcome with joy, the poor mare nearly cries!

There really are puffins and even seals too
And look at the fish jumping out of the sea!
But perhaps what is most surprising of all
Is a pony awaiting, just who is she?

An ethereal glow radiates from her
Something suggests an otherworldly presence.
She approaches a nearly speechless Alpine
And imparts her a gift, one of strange essence.

A mystical looking relic, quite unique
With a curious mark never seen before.
"You have come far and have earned this, now go forth."
And with her task done, she vanished from the shore.

Young Alpine Glow was still very unaware
Of what truly she had been entrusted with.
What she held in her hoof was no mere trinket
But a key once thought to have been just a myth.

Without the sad/spooky lore bits, the snowponies are just happy fluffy horses. And unlike the equestrian ponies, they don't have literal gods guarding them and have to rely only on themselves.

The darker aspects while not there right at the start I do certainly think have given much more life to the setting in general. Besides with canon not being fixed in stone, it can be as dark or as light as anyone wants anyway.

>>
>>37701810
That's why I sometimes write about them, Anon. Yes, it's a tragedy that young lives are cut short but by giving these glimpses into snowpone society, you also see the depth of their community and the compassion they hold for each other. Not just for the living but even those who might be forgotten about in other parts of the world.
And why I believe the night of calling souls towards Snowpitt is so important; it really is an opportunity for those who were lost or taken abruptly to meet those they loved in life and more tenderly part ways. In a land as harsh as theirs, snowpones have come to accept death as something that can't be avoided entirely. Out of necessity, if nothing else, they had to band together and rely on each other even moreso than elsewhere and that's deeply shaped their society. Even Ice Elation returns home to meet her sister and friends in the village and I'm still going to go with part of the reason for her adventuring being to hold back the horrors of the far northern iceberg labyrinths.
Death is always a tragedy, absolutely, but that's partly why I don't tend to focus on the actual aspect of dying itself rather than how snowpones deal with the aftermath of it. I'm not sure how many would want to read of a snowmare grieving for her child, lamenting that he'll never again don mask and costume to join his friends in practice against snowmonsters. That he'll never lie by her side at the bonefires in Snowpitt and timidly raise his voice in song as she offers gentle encouragement. Or even that she'll never again kiss his brow before he falls asleep at night, and wake to his quiet breathing in the morning. Although perhaps that might give more meaning to the reunion with his spirit at Snowpitt and how she's the one who has to push herself to sing, though her heart feels too heavy. Meeting him there, holding him again, lying with him at her side by the bonfires once more. Telling him that he goes to his father now, his grandmares and grandsires, and all the departed spirits of the tribe - of all snowpones. And that one day, she too will be there with him in that place where the stars shine forever.
A lot of people don't want to take things too dark and I understand that but a little does help round out the setting and in other cases, more of it does add life and depth. Even in Equestria there's monsters, after all.

Finally, considering the time of year we've entered I think it's an especially appropriate subject. It's the right combination of spooky and heartwarming that should lead nicely into a time for more straightforward heartwarming stories.
Perhaps as we get closer to Hearth's Warming, you'll see more people talking about those sorts of subjects.

You're improving, Anon! I could only spot one oblique rhyme and the metre was much more consistent.

I think it might be the mouth/snout absence. They look faceless. I don't know if lowering the detail does anything "better" or not, that was just again curiosity.

I like your art anyway drawfriend, your contributions are welcome, and this is just me posting the end result of a test

lowering the texture detail like this isnt going to fix it until its lowered even lower like marbo immitating the show style. the texture still looks like wooden carvings you don't get fur from lots of sharp lines. Wood ponies is fitting since we have anon being a wood carver in the pic they come off as statues rather than real snow ponies.

>"I'll just be a minute, I need to clear the snow away."
>"Ah, so your hideout's underground."
>"That's right, the weather can get pretty fierce, so we build bunkers underground to hide in when things get bad."
>...
>Deep underground, looks like. This could take a while, I'd better step in.
"Let me give you a hoof, squirt."
>"Thanks, I guess I dug it in deeper than I thought."
>I've been wondering, what kind of food even grows out here?
>I haven't seen a single plant since I arrived, not even any grass.
>Just how do ponies survive out here?
>"Okay, one final layer, aaaand..."
>It's a giant room, hard to believe this was hidden under what looked like a perfect layer of snow.
"Whoa, you really dug this cave on your own?"
>"Sure did, I had to make sure it was deep enough to hide in, and had enough room to store my supplies."
"You were planning to be out here for a while, huh?"
>It's almost full to the brim in there, I can't tell what's what but looks like the only thing it's lacking is space.
>"I MIGHT have overpacked a bit for what was supposed to be a short trip."
>How'd she even haul all this out here? Guess she's way stronger than she looks.
>"Well come on in, and make yourself at home."
>>
>>37710596
>It's actually pretty cozy in here, nowhere near as cold as I expected it to be.
>"There we go, found the berries."
>I've never seen berries like these before, they're kinda beautiful.
>"This is one of my favorite foods, they're called cloudberries."
>It's got a really nice orange color, and a killer name to boot.
>"Go ahead, help yourself."
>Don't mind if I do.
>*munch*
"Yum, these are real tasty!"
>"Great, I've only got a few though, I'll get the fish out to complete the meal."
"Sounds good, I can't wait."
>I'm starving, I'll eat anything, even-
"Uh, hold on a sec, did you say fish?"
"Yep, I'm guessing you don't have any back home?"
"As in the animal that swims around in water?"
>"Oh, so you do have fish back in Equestria, that's good."
>"I'm sure you find it surprising that I have some with me, but Snowpitt has large rivers nearby where there's plenty of fish, and they're all too happy to share with us."
>It's surprising alright, surprisingly WEIRD that ponies here eat fish!
"The thing is, we do have plenty of fish in Equestria, but we don't actually eat them."
>That caught her attention, she's looking right at me in disbelief.
>"You have fish but don't eat them? Are you serious?"
"Fish aren't really considered food there, at least not for ponies."
>"That's unbelievable, fish are integral to our survival, everypony depends on fish to get us through the winters when we don't have many plants available."
"I've never thought of fish as something you can eat, but what the hey, I'm up for trying anything once."
>"Oh good, because there's plenty right here, one delicious fish lunch coming right up!"
>I know I just said I'd try it, but I'm not seriously going to, am I?
>No, that's crazy talk, fish aren't for eating.
>I mean sure, other creatures eat them, but...
>"If you've still got doubts, you don't have to eat it if you don't want to, I think there's enough berries to last until we get home."
"No it's cool, I'm... I'm fine. I can eat it, no sweat!"
>"How about I cook it? Maybe it'll look more appetizing that way."
>She's digging around for something else now, does she actually have something to start a fire?
>"Some ponies enjoy eating the fish raw, but personally I like cooking them."
>"That's why I brought this bow and some kindling with me."
>She's no slouch when it comes to her preparations, that's for sure.
>"A friend of mine who's really good at starting fires taught me how to best cook them, it's all about timing."
>Ugh, I know she's eager about this but I'm still uneasy about actually eating a fish.
>"Okay, let's head back out now, I'm pretty hungry now too, the sooner I cook them the sooner we can eat."

Of course! They do grow even in some Arctic climes and it raises the question of whether snowpones would create preserves from them. With Maple Maven they have a source of sugar so it'd be something extra for the long winter nights.
Don't worry about the length of the updates by the way, Anon, they're appreciated all the same and certainly worth waiting for. It's great to be getting some more attention on a filly mostly overlooked before now, too. Resourceful and industrious, I'm liking your characterisation of Meadow so far.

>>37705927
I like to think that snowmares are actually singing towards the boots, but to an untrained ear of an anon, it sounds like they're just yelling at them. Anons and regular ponies cannot hear the differences between the notes are being sung. Unless they are shown where to stand among the snow dunes where the sound is distorted to make a beautiful melody.
These ponies are not singing for themselves, they are signing for the land.

Why a boot triggers such a response is still unknown to outsiders. Some Anons say it's related to Wild Anon, some say it's related to snow ponies' ancient past and lastly, there are a few who say they are just trolling the rest of Equestria.

>>37710591
She looks like you can sink deep into her fluff.

Idk but there's definitely more than 1. We just focus on 1

>>37722994
Absolutely adorable!
>>
>>37704658
Might as well share another step, just gotta tryb adding some decorations, colors for rugs and maybe use multiple pillows instead of a "beanbag" and need to fix foals ears as I noticed they are wrong.

As for the newborn?

Various but we focus on one, they're the main characters of the "setting"
>>
>>37710597
>"Could you help me dig out some snow? I need some space for the fire pit."
"No prob, just a sec."
>I still can't get the fish thing off my mind, it's just so weird to think of them as food.
>At least there's some other stuff here she brought out I can eat as a backup.
>There's those berries she brought out earlier, some really pretty purple flowers, and a bunch of grass.
>Still, I don't think it'll be enough to give me the proper fuel to keep on going for the day.
>"Okay, that's perfect, now to get the kindling sparking and we're all set."
>She's got her bow all ready, and gets right to work.
>That's some impressive speed she's got going on.
>*hiss* *CRACK*
>Oh sweet toastiness, an actual fire, that was fast!
>Finally some real warmth, I've really missed feeling... well, anything but freezing, really.
>"Great, now let's get cooking!"
>She takes out two long sticks from the bunker.
>"That is, if you're still willing to try some fish."
>Am I? Oh for pony's sake, yeah I guess I am.
>I can't help it, I'm really hungry here.
"I'm up for it, no problem.
>"Great, I just know you'll love it! Here, I'll prep it on there for you."
>...
>She just stabbed that fish right through its body like it was a marshmallow...
>"Okay, now hold on carefully, don't let it get to close to the fire or it'll get charred."
"Yeah, sure thing."
>Well, apart from burning a fish in the middle of nowhere, this is kinda comfy.
>Meadow makes for great company, and the weather is really nice now that there's some actual heat.
>The snow is actually really beautiful, and there's some real fluffy clouds in the wide open sky.
>The cool breeze feels great flowing through my mane, and I'm really liking the crackling sounds coming from the fire.
>I wouldn't mind sticking out here for a while.
>Might be nice to take a nap even, I could use one after all that walking.
>Maybe I could doze off for a while after lunch, I do get sleepy after I eat.
>"Ahhh... doesn't that fish smell amazing?"
>I hadn't even been paying attention, the fish hardly looks like a fish anymore.
>I gotta admit, it does smell pretty good.
>"It's almost ready, just needs a few more minutes."
"You said you had a friend who taught you how to cook these fish, right?
>"Yeah, her name's Dry Kindling, she's got a fascination with starting fires and burning things."
>That doesn't sound dangerous at all...
>"It was an accident the first time, actually."
>"She told me she meant to set something else on fire but got the bags mixed up."
"What was she trying to burn?"
>"She wouldn't tell me, I'm guessing it was something she broke though, she's a pretty... mischievous filly."
>"Anyways, after she realized she set the bag of fish on fire, she put out the fire and pulled the bag away."
>"Then she realized it smelled great and took a fish out to give it a taste"
"And how was it?"
>"Apparently she couldn't tell the first time because it burned her mouth, but after it cooled down and she tried again, she loved it."
>>
>>37723681
>This filly sounds like a real piece of work.
>"I got called over shortly after and she gave me some to try, and it was really good."
>"I wanted to learn how she got it so tasty, so I gave her some of my fish and we kept cooking them until we got the flavor just right."
>"She also taught me the best ways to start a fire, that's how I got so good at starting them myself."
"That's uh... good to know."
>"Oh, but don't worry! I don't start them all the time, it's only ever to stay warm and to cook, promise!"
>"Speaking of cooking, they're done!"
>The fish have a nice, even brown color now.
>They've lost their shininess, but I think the dull color makes them a little more appealing to look at.
>"While we wait for them to cool, let's have some snacks."
>She holds up the purple flowers from earlier.
>"These are pasque flowers, they've got a really strong flavor that's not for everypony, so maybe just try one and see if you like it."
>If I'm going to be eating fish, I think I can handle a flower.
>*munch*
>Agh, that IS strong, it's so bitter!
>"Not a fan, huh?"
"It tastes more like medicine than food..."
>"It can be used as medicine, actually, but I haven't learned how to use it just yet, personally I like the taste."
>You've got some odd taste then.
>"Eat some berries and it should get rid of the taste, there's plenty of water too."
>Who knew something so nice looking could taste so nasty.
>"Maybe you'll like this arcitic moss better, it's from further north so it's pretty rare to come by around here.
>Moss? As in the gross stuff that grows on rocks and junk?
>*grumble*
>Fine, stomach, I read you loud and clear.
"Sure, I'll give it a taste."
>*munch*
>Ugh, I don't know which was worse!
>How do these ponies eat this stuff?!
>"I'm guessing that wasn't a hit either?"
"Can't say it was..."
>"Oh no, that's all I have on me other than the berries, and I don't have as many as I thought I did..."
"Don't worry about it, there's plenty of fish, right?"
>"Yes, I have a lot here, but-"
"Well I meant what I said, I'm gonna eat it, and I know I'll enjoy it!"
>"Okay then, I'm glad to hear it, cause they've finally cooled down enough to eat."
>She doesn't hesitate for a second to bite into her fish.
"Don't be shy, dig in!"
>*sigh* Guess I have no choice.
>I'm starving here, and I've got no other options.
>Here comes the moment of truth, no turning back now..
>*munch*
>...
>Hey... this is pretty good.
>No, better than good, this is great!
>Wow, I can't believe how tasty this is!
>*chomp chomp*
>"Looks like somepony is a fan."
"You bet, this is awesome!"
>I can't believe I've been missing out on this all this time, who knew fish could actually work as food!?
>"I'll get started on cooking up some more, we'll need lots of energy to keep our strength up."
>"Mmm, I'll eat as many as you've got, *munch* ohhh this is so good!
>"Great, cause there's plenty more where that came from!"

The Yakut people in Siberia raise the real life snow poners. Idk why both sedentary and nomadic Equestrian snow poners wouldn't at least do a little animal husbandry

The Bootscreamer Song

Ah-ah, ah!
Ah-ah, ah!

We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun and the windigoes
Destroyer of the clogs
I’ll bite and shred your boots and
I’ll eat them all, and you may cry
But Anon, I am coming
I’ll never sleep when your feet are warm
My only goal will be devour more

Ah-ah, ah!
Ah-ah, ah!

We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun and the windigoes
How scared Anon so green
Will shiver to his core
Since while he lay asleep and snored
I ate his footwear drawer
I’ll never sleep when your feet are warm
My only goal will be devour more
You know I’ll never stop; so don’t remake your shoes friend
There’ll be no peace or trust for you I’ll only bite right through them

Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ahh, ah
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh

How do snow ponies feel about gloves or mittens?
>>
>>37726571
Neutral I suppose.
It's not like they're boots.
>>
>>37726571
Gloves are shaped weird and should be avoided. Mittens are good. They’re for stealing to put things in.
>>
>>37726571
I choose to believe snowpony earmuffs are more like ear mittens, and thus snowponies think snow anons look silly. Like how we view someone with socks on their hands.
>>
>>37726571
how about snow ponies wearing gloves on their ears?
>>
>>37726571
Mittens are good for sticking your snootle in for keeping it warm. They're even stretchy so you can walk while wearing one! Very stealable, 10/10 loot.
>>
>>37727253
I now require snowponies wearing snootle warmers.
>>
>>37727256
>they're just insulated feed bags
>however, they're all decorated in some way or another so everyone can easily tell whose is whose
>some are shaped like puffin beaks, though that leaves a bit of food in the bottom that some fillies aren't smart enough to just tilt their head back to eat so they just sit there trying to get it with their tongue the whole time
>>

>>37732384
When I look at her, I keep thinking of how much of an opposite she is to Cirrus. Not just in appearance but possibly in other, interrelated, ways.
Where Cirrus is ethereal and serene, this mare is literally and figuratively grounded; she's less concerned with spirits and more with the practicalities of life and death. Her raven companions guide her towards the recently deceased and you'll often find her standing over them, offering a quiet prayer for the repose of their body. Asking the earth to embrace it gently and let its flesh and bones return to bring forth new life. Perhaps part of the reason why she has raven companions? She doesn't or can't consult the spirits but does commune with animals, mostly birds and especially her black-feathered friends.
Maybe she lives alone, not because she's shunned or ostracised or her vocation is seen as unclean or spiritually impure. So far, Ice Elation is about the only snowpone I can think of who's shown an inclination towards solitude and it could be interesting to explore others who share that, for their own reasons. Adds more flavour to the world. If so, the question remains as to why she prefers to live apart from others. The villages are lively with voices and sounds, the smells of food cooking, the laughter of foals and songs sung at night. For a mare like Cirrus, it's something that gives her life and brings a gladness to her heart that's incomparable. Snowpone spirits shine brightest when they're together, after all. But for this mare? It's almost a cacophony, at least if she were to live there. She doesn't feel the reflection of it in their spirits, only hears the noise.
But apart from them, in nature? The quiet whispering of the wind through the trees, the creaking and groaning of their boughs, the chirping and cawing of birds, the burbling of streams and rivers - all of it is a reminder that the world moves with its own gentle song. So as not to disrupt it, when she wishes to speak to one of her ravens she puts out her hoof and lets him alight on it, brings it to her muzzle and whispers to him. For that reason, ravens are seen as a good omen; the dark mare of the forest has set one of her friends to watch over it and ensure no harm comes to it.
And she's the kind of mare snowpones like Forest Ken and Pine Ponder will seek out for her knowledge. Pine, especially as a tender of nature, is always welcome. Even more so if she brings some of her tea; gifts of the forest and its life that give life to the friend that brings it.
Just some thoughts for consideration. Beautiful art, by the way. The rough texture of her cloak, in particular, is something I can't keep my eyes off.
>>
>>37732760
You describe her as a hermit pretty much. Ice Elation chooses for the most part to be isolated out of duty to defend her village and to explore for rare items. This mare chooses the calm and solitude because she is just different, she likes to be by herself. She was probably quite the quiet and maybe even socially anxious little filly, until she found her calling.
Maybe she left the village and ran away after finding it too much for her, or being tired of her parents misunderstanding her. Learning to live on her own in the woods and across the land, finding the quiet places and meditating almost on the words in the winds and the sounds of nature.
One day she'd return to the village and while a little put out with the overwhelming joy of the snowponies at her safe return, she realises the importance of their kinship. And they notice she has changed too, they can see the wisdom she's accumulated, the change in posture and confidence from knowing herself well.
She's not quite a shaman, but she is something special. And to those who come with soft hooftsteps and quiet voices, she'll gladly impart aid and advice where able.
