>They collectively nursed an injured puffin back to help but want to make sure it has the best possible start to fly again.
>One of the foals places the puffin on her head while the others make flapping motions with their forelegs as they start sledding down.
>The other puffins they brought for moral support take off one by one and look down at the last puffin.
>As they're about to reach the bottom, the snowfoal with it on her head gives a little jump on the sled, tossing the puffin into the air.
>With a few tentative flaps, it first glides and then joins its fellows in flying.
>When the foals reach the bottom, they look up in wonderment at their friend now happily flitting about.
>Before it alights in front of the snowfoal who carried it.
>The group collectively hug the little bird as the other puffins crowd around them.
Had to share what I think is a cute little thought. Snowfoal-puffin interactions are pure joy.

I'm not sure how well it'd fit, either, but I still like the idea of, for example, Frozen Harvest training a small pack of arctic foxes to assist her in finding roots. She keeps a small pouch of stroganina on her when she goes out with them, for rewards when they find the roots. Though they often wind up playing with each other and sometimes trying to get Frozen involved, it's good to have them if even only for the company. And some might nip off with the fishermares, hoping to get a fresh treat.

I imagine the fishermares have thought up more than a few stories about horrifying sea monsters lurking under the ice. Mostly as an excuse to stay at the village when the rare thunderstorm blows in, but they also make for good fireside tales.

Scent reminds me of sugar cookies and some Celestial Seasonings tea I can't place my finger on.

Taste wise, the forest berries hit on the front end, giving way to some nice earthiness. Very well rounded and easy drinking. A cozy cup for a cold winter's day

I have an idea, Satan, though it pulls somewhat from real world views of this time of year.
Snowpones have always lived with the wild variations in day and night length that comes with the place they inhabit. They've learned to live with it, to adapt. But there was a time when even the noble and hardy spirits of the snowpones were tried. Night has always been a time where the veil separating the spirits from the snowpones was at its weakest. It's why, when they gather at Snowpitt to call the spirits of their dead to them, it's done at night. It's why some shamans will say they prefer to go out into the world at night, so the spirits are better illuminated by the gentler light of the moon. When the long night of the colder seasons of the year set in, it's a time of difficulty where the environment becomes harsher and food scarcer but it's also a period of reflection, to commune more clearly with the land. But it wasn't always so.
Long ago, when the Great Pony of the Sky still flew so beautifully across it, tending to the jewels she'd wept forth that guided the snowpones on their way, there came a time when she could not be found. Explanations were sought and where some said the windigos had conspired to trick her into abandoning them, others fretted that they had done something to displease her. Why wouldn't they think so? A sickly black scar had formed across the moon, dimming its light and gazing down balefully upon them. Still others said that the constellation titans, those terrible beasts, had grown jealous of how she was adored and took her from the world to be locked in a prison set into the womb that had birthed her.
But the shamans disagreed; neither windigo nor displeasure, nor any monster of the sky had taken her from them. It was hatred mingled with despair that had gripped her heart, and a darkness more alien even than the creatures of the far north. It was Almighty Sky who had taken her from them - taken to sleep in that place the Great Mother had offered up to the heavens that together with her beloved would birth their Great Pony.
It was little comfort to the poor snowpones who looked to the night sky and felt a shiver pass through them at the stars sitting so... wrong. As if they'd been carelessly cast forth by a hoof too inexperienced to know of their proper places. It was a time of far greater hardship than the snowpones could recall.
But worst was how restless the spirits of the world had grown. The snowpones beseeched their eternal guides, the Earth and Sky but both now kept their vigil upon their daughter. What could they do?
>>
>>37637320
Songs and stories had always lain at the heart of snowpone society. Many, however, found their hearts too heavy to speak of those better times, of their plenty and their gladness. How else could it be? Beyond the villages, in the places of the world where the spirits spoke to few and were calmed and tended by them, the scar of the moon obscured its gentle, guiding light. More ancient and more wicked things stirred once more and rose to torment snowpones who ventured too far from their refuges alone.
But when those spirits began to crowd about the villages, something had to be done. Old traditions were adapted - where once stories were told to warm the heart, not they were shared to steel it. The spirits would see that snowpones were no cowards and even when brought to face their worst fears, would stand just as proud and strong. Foals, particularly, would sit about the communal fire pits and challenge each other to test their mettle.
Whether the spirits shied away from those displays of courage or in fear of the tales themselves, none can say. But as the years passed and the stories that were crafted were handed down, added to, and refined, the more treacherous spirits of the land began to be seen as far less frightening than anything the snowpone heart could conjure up.
In time, forced to adapt once again, the shamans and tenders of the wild places of the earth found new ways to soothe the spirits and learned to live with the land once more. While stories were still shared on that night the Great Pony was taken from them, being drawn closer together once more had made many snowpones find a new appreciation for their friends and loved ones. The peace that radiated from the villages quieted the malicious spirits who, without easy prey to nourish them, retreated to the small parts of the world they once called their own.
Now the stories are still told around fires, together, on that night. To remind themselves always that fear can never overcome the snowpone spirit.
Just a silly little idea, I’m sure others can come up with better. Hopefully it might offer a little inspiration, at least.

>She stepped a bit closer and turned sideways with a hopeful smile.

>No protective gear.
>No winterized boots.
>Not even a bucking scarf.
>Deeply unnerved, the guard mumbled something unintelligible and promptly galloped away to find his superior officer.
>Some time passed and poor Frosty Flakes was starting to get a little bored and more than a little worried.
>Had she made some mistake of etiquette?
>Or were the old teaching ballads mistaken?
>Maybe the gemponies were not as welcoming as they had believed.
>She had been so looking forward to reconnecting with their ancient allies, too.
>But eventually the news made its way up the chain of command, was confirmed not to be a poorly conceived joke, and an official decision was made.
>Shining Armor himself led a squad of guard ponies to escort her to the Princess.
>They hoped the mare would consider it a sign of respect, but truth be told Shining was more concerned with the threat of trickery than honoring this mysterious ambassador.
>So when two guards swung the heavy metal bar up and the big doors slowly creaked open, it was really no wonder Shining reacted the way he did.
>The moment the doors opened, Frosty let out a delighted squee and trotted forward, raising a hoof to give the former captain a hug of greeting.

>There was a flash of purple light and next thing she knew she was lying on the ground with a half dozen spears pointed at her muzzle.

obviously this means you should draw spooky cute snowponies. I'm sure they've got nightmare night traditions, though it might just be another "walk around the tundra for a bit with fire just to make sure nothing spooky's about" or "let's go visit the local wendigo to make sure they're getting enough of the argument boot to eat".

>Should be edgy, but I like how it make Snowpony more otherworldly compared to happy-go-lucky equestrian horses.
>Like if they were borderline on being Fae.
I think that's one of the reasons I love these threads so much. They capture the feeling I had of 2010-2011 Equestria where everything is cute and happy initially - you have all these snowpons being silly and blushy and stealing fish or boots or whatever... but then you stop and you look. And just below the surface, there's this slightly eerie, slightly hard-edged, slightly sorrowful cast to the whole world. It's a place where colts and fillies can gallop and giggle and play hide-and-seek amid the trees, but also a place where they come when their mothers call lest the wolves or older things catch them straying. Where they make friends (or at least, allies) of Windigoes, but also call the dead who could not be protected. Where old clanmothers tell tales to gathered family beside roaring fires, but the tales are of those who are no longer there to tell them themselves.

It's not a grimderp edgefest, but not saccharinely stifling either. The two elements offset and highlight each other, and in doing so reach perfect balance.

Do you think that snowpony shamans knew that the Day of Darkness would come again in a thousand years, and prepared for it, discovering the rituals and passing them down to, one day soon, unknowingly assist the ponies of the warm lands in bringing Great Pony of the Sky back?

Equestrians tell a tale of how "the stars will aid in her escape" but they had the wrong of it. Snowponies knew that the stars would light the way home for her. Whispered on the wind was the knowledge gleaned by the shamans of her return on that day, long in the future. A day of calling but not to the resting places of their dead, rather it would be toward the sky. When the Day of Darkness would come and the terrible black scar of the moon would bleed forth and smother the light of the sun, the shamans would know the day of returning had finally arrived.
They would bring every tribe from every corner of their lands together, call out to the spirits of sea and land and sky, even the spirits of the long departed shamans who had long ago imparted the knowledge. For just as the Great Pony had guided them safely and surely home on so many nights, they would now do the same for her. For she had gathered the darkness of the moon's scar unto herself and descended upon the world once more. To where, none save the oldest and wisest shamans knew. Even so, not a snowpony felt their voice wanting as they called out and sent forth their love to the stars that now thrummed with anticipation in the dark day's sky.

>>37640139
>>37640595
I really like these ideas and tying them back to pic related. Perhaps the snowfoal she was tasked with calling had been taken from the world in a way that left her frightened. Stirring from her resting place meant facing a cruel and careless land. But learning to soothe such spirits is an important thing for apprentice shamans to learn and those that're called to learn and chosen for their kind hearts and thoughtful natures.
So, the apprentice in these images tried all she could to call forth the filly. No matter how long she remained around that place, there was no sight of the spirit only the feeling of it stirring now and then. Dejected, she returned to her mentor and confessed her failure. Though failure it was not, for even the oldest shamans might sometimes have to pause and consider a more personal approach. What did the apprentice know of the spirit filly?
>>
>>37640677
Not much that might be of use; the filly was a gentle soul who loved to play with her friends and had shown great promise as an ice sculptor, often creating gifts for those she loved. The apprentice shaman knew little enough of carving ice but, on the advice of her mentor, set a plan of her own making into motion.
In a cave near the place the filly was laid, she took tools and single-hoofedly pulled a slab of ice. There, the clinking and scraping of metal of ice echoed out from the cave but still, there was no sign of the filly's spirit. Recalling the lesson that patience was just as important as love when calling spirits, the apprentice shaman finished her work and lay herself down for the night. Perhaps staying near would help convince the filly somepony cared for her. And, if she was lucky, distract from what she thought a poor and crude carving.
It was the next day she awoke to curious noises - delicate clinking and careful scraping, as if somepony was tampering with her sculpture. Horrified that her work might be destroyed, she leapt from her sleeping place and turned to face whoever it might be.
It being the spirit filly, the ice pick in her mouth, tapping away at the sculpture that now was beginning to look far more elegant. Upon the approach of the apprentice shaman, the spirit filly gasped and dropped the pick. She was sorry! She didn't mean to undo the other filly's work! It... It's just been so long since she's put pick to ice. So long since she's had the joy of creating a sculpture of one of her friends.
And all the while the apprentice shaman approaches, slowly, carefully, until she was by the spirit filly's side, sharing the warmth of her body. There's a sniffle by her side followed by the strange, ethereal sensation of the spirit leaning against her but not quite passing through her. And she asks: would the filly like to see her friends once more. They're a little older now but they'd surely love to know their friend is at peace and happy.
The two would return to the cave many times, to finish that sculpture and so that the spirit filly could show the apprentice shaman the ways of carving ice. A sculpture the shaman was surprised to see take on a very familiar shape. But no trip was so filled with joy and the love of friendship than spirit filly's first journey home. It'd been so long since she'd felt another by her side and shared in the simple laughter that only the kindness and care of that friendship could spill forth.

The main OCs are probably one or a couple tribes. Personally, I'd imagine the snowpones are around and north of the Crystal Empire. The southernmost tribes are permanently settled while the northernmost are migratory, with a mix of both at in between latitudes

Snowpitt is a village in the middle that also serves as a central ceremonial ground for all tribes. Pic related is one of the more southerly groups
>>

Seems to be a common thing for fantasy settings if there's a cold north segment of a world, but not that it's a bad thing. I find it really comfy. The feeling of the more north you go, the more mythical or fantastical it gets. There are even stories of the most northern groups or tribes having qualities that differentiates them. This might be the reason why snowpones enjoy going on expeditions to go even farther north, coming back with stories to tell their village around the fire.

Without connecting it too much to other settings coughFaeruncough I would say there's definitely a number of settled towns or villages along the more settled south,, all joined through a loose confederation. While each tribe, clan or village is exemplified through their qualities, it's this unity that gives their federation the name of something we should decide on

There's at least three different types of tribes, nomad, taiga, and igloo. Igloo snowpones are the most built up right now, with characters and lore and such. Outside of where each tribe lives, the main differences between them are mostly their types of homes with slight differences in their ways of life. Other than some brisk trading, they're almost entirely independent from one another except during key times of the year, where they gather for ceremonies and frivolity.

I like the idea of a central 'Snowpitt' settlement that they gather at for communal ceremonies, events and trade, but otherwise live in distinct tribes that specialise in certain things.
Kind of like how the apple family specialises in, apples, and it seems like a natural extension of the influence cutie marks have on pony society.
Take main equestria as an example.
>Earth ponies farm, Apple family farms apples, one particular member of the family makes bomb ass apple fritters.
To come up with an example for the snow ponies
>They have a connection with spirits(whether they be animal, land, pony or 'other' like windigo)*, one particular tribe communes with snowbunnies >>37642496 , one member of the tribe is able to get the best quality fur from her charges.

*A bit presumptuous but i feel that traditional earth pony magic being distorted from the physical properties of the land such as growth of plants, over to the more spiritual aspect of things due to the presence / influence of windigo is a good explanation for a lot of the headcanon we've been coming up with.
I will admit this mostly arises from my related headcanon that crystal ponies arose from a similar situation, that being earth ponies living for an extended period with the crystal heart routinely coating them eventually led to the birth of a 'natural' crystal pony.
TLDR: Earth ponies are highly adaptable to their environments.
>>
>>37642676
>>37642686
Snowponies are isolated from "modern" Equestria, they would have no need to form any kind of unified semi-political body. They’re a big, disparate family that doesn’t need governance to be unified. That’s why the windigos are able to be placated. Instead of Snowpitt being the political center of snowponies, it’s more like grandma’s house where Baba Hooves knows best.
>>
>>37642788
Honestly, I think some Earth ponies in general overlap with Unicorns in tapping into spiritual or fundamental, "basic" magics (i.e. Pinkie Pie's reality warping and 4th wall stuff). They just express/use it differently than Unicorns.
>>
>>37642788
>>37642857
Since the first threads, the common consensus has been that snowponies have some affinity and/or control over snow and ice. Whether that be navigating it, shaping it, whatever, their magic is expressed in relation to their environment. Because earth pony magic represents a degree of control or connection to nature but the snowpony expression of that magic isn't the same as Equestrian earth ponies. You can easily incorporate an affinity for communing with spirits because they're innately tied to nature and I think that gives the kind of primitive and more fundamental feeling that people have been enjoying when it comes to snowponies. Tribes having an affinity for specific animals came up earlier in the thread and it fits perfectly with that, too.
Pine Ponder, I feel is a good exemplar of it; as an arborist she tends to the trees that surround her village, as well as the spirits that dwell among them. Conifer cones aren't just beautiful in their own right but are seed carriers and so represent new life and new potential. Even her journey to the crystal forest demonstrates just how seriously she takes her duty but even that's seeking the assistance of the land mixed with something ethereal and more abstract.

>TLDR: Earth ponies are highly adaptable to their environments.
I'd say that Equestrian earth ponies are good at adapting their environments to themselves whereas snowponies sort of combine adapting to and adapting the environment. You see it in their relation to snow and ice but also things like their adeptness at foraging, rather than growing crops as their environment largely doesn't permit that. And again, that ties back to spirits; rather than banishing the windigos, the snowponies have found their own way of dealing with them. Depending of what ideas that've come up in the threads you want to go with, you could even say the relationship is almost symbiotic.

Man, this hits so right. Would love to see you continue this.
>>
Hey guys, I'd started a little green on the old Snowpony Expedition thread a while ago, and am finally back to continue it. Here's the story if you'd like to read it. https://desuarchive.org/mlp/thread/37474157/#37495175

>>37644115
That was a very comfy video anon, made me feel warm inside!
>>
>>37644130
"I flew for a reeeeaaaally long time, pretty much the whole day yesterday."
"I actually came with a friend of mine, but he had to head back home."
>"So you've been alone this whole time? Weren't you scared?"
>Terrified, actually, but she doesn't need to know that.
"Of course not! I can handle anything, even on my own."
>Meadow nodded her head.
>"We have that much in common then, I'm used to being on my own as well."
"You are? Don't you have anypony looking after you?"
>"There's no need, I'm perfectly capable of fending for myself, even here in the Southern Reaches."
>That's what this place is called? The Great Dash Plains is a WAY better name.
>"It's an important responsibility for all villagers to do their part in ensuring the survival of our village."
>"From a young age, we're taught that only by working together can we succeed."
>Meadow proudly puffs up her chest and stomps her hooves, almost like she's imitating somepony in particular.
>"Every pony has a role to play, and my task is apprenticing under my older sister, Tundra Tracker, our village's main gatherer."
>Her eyes are shimmering, she must really look up to her sister.
>"Tundra is the strongest, most resilient pony I know, she's always on the move, looking out for our home."
>"She's also one of the few ponies who can handle trekking through the blizzards that divide our village and our sister tribes further north."
>Sounds like there's far more snowponies than anypony could have expected.
>To think they'd gone unnoticed for so long without being discovered.
>"In fact, she started on a journey not too long ago, with a small group to meet with the village of Snowpitt, our closest neighbor."
>>
>>37644134
"I getcha, so she hasn't been around lately then, huh?"
>"She's been gone for a while, but we received a letter saying she would be coming home soon."
>"In fact, she was supposed to be coming back home today, I wanted to find something to surprise her with."
"So that's why you're out here exploring then?"
>"That's right, the south is unknown to all of us, even Tundra, so I was hoping to find something unique to bring back."
"Looks like you lucked out then, kid, cause you found the most unique pony ever!"
>"Hey, you're right, you are pretty unique! I've definitely never seen a pony with wings before, or with such bright colors."
"Well, my wings and my color aren't so uncommon back where I'm from, but what is unique is my speed!"
>"Oh yeah, you said you were the fastest flier in Equestria, right?"
"That's right, I'm kind of a natural when it comes to going fast."
>"That's pretty neat, I could use some practice when it comes to searching quickly, it took me a while to get here."
"I'd be happy to give you some pointers, flying is my specialty but I'm a pretty good runner, too."
>*grumble*
"But first, I'd really like something to eat, I haven't eaten in days."
>"Oh, that's no problem, I've got some food stored away not too far from here, I'd be glad to share with you."
>Oh thank Celestia, it's only been a day but I feel like I haven't eaten in years!
"That'd be great!"
>"Alright, we'd better get going then, the sun won't last too much longer."
>...I thought it was morning and the sun was still rising.
>Guess I really am a heavy sleeper.
>>
>>37644136
>"So you were just flying non-stop the whole day?"
"Yeah, I figured I'd hit something eventually, so I just kept going until I tired out."
>"I suppose to somepony not used to seeing the landscape, it can all look the same."
"How could it not, just look around here! It's all just bright untouched snow everywhere you look!
>"I can understand that, but there are always subtle differences in the snow and the air, no two places are ever exactly the same."
>"That's what Tundra always told me, anyways."
"So what makes this place look any different from where we met up?"
>She cocks an eyebrow.
>"You mean apart from the hoofprints I made earlier that we're following?"
"Oh, uh, y-yeah..."
>That was kinda silly of me not to notice.
>Guess I'm still a little distracted, it's just nice having somepony to talk to again.
>"Aside from my hoofprints, I can't blame you for not noticing anything different in the area."
>"When you can't distinguish using your eyes, you have to rely on other factors to help get your bearings."
>"For example, here the snow's texture is different, have you noticed you've been leaving deeper hoofprints?"
>Am I? Let's see...
>Hey, she's right, looking at my hoofprints from before, they aren't as deep as the ones I'm leaving now.
>"The air here is also chillier, I'm guessing it's going to start snowing pretty soon."
>"We're getting close though, so we should be fine."
>It's such a huge relief not feeling lost anymore, or being alone.
>Yesterday was pretty stressful, I don't know if I would have made it if Meadow didn't find me out here.
>>
>>37644139
>She's pretty capable for a young filly, but it's still really odd that she's even out here all by herself.
>You'd think somepony would be out here with her, y'know, just in case.
"Hey, how long have you been out here, anyway?"
>"I left the village two days ago, it was only supposed to be a quick exploration, but I really wanted to see how far I could go."
"So we're pretty far from your home then, huh?"
>"I guess you could say that, but I'm not worried, I know how to get back."
>I bet 20 bits I know how she'll react to my next questions.
"Does anypony know you're even out here?"
>She freezes up a bit.
>"Um, they know I went out exploring, I made sure to tell the elder at least before I left."
"Did you tell the elder you would be gone for more than a day?"
>She stops walking, and looks down at her hooves.
>"I... might have failed to mention it."
>Classic filly behavior, she's probably gonna get the scolding of her life when she gets back.
>"I guess I might have gotten a bit carried away with exploring, I really didn't plan to come this far."
>She sits down, her face is riddled with guilt.
"Hey, I've been there, I totally get it."
>And I really do, if any of the others were in my place, they would have started scolding her for being so reckless.
>But it's just a natural thing to do, wanting to go out and find new things, we don't always think these things through.
>"You get it?"
>Aww, she looks so guilty, and I'm not even scolding her.
"Sure I do, sometimes you just have to answer the call to adventure, that feeling of inspiration to want to make your mark on the world."
>"Wow, you really do understand what I was feeling."
"Sure do, and I can tell you from experience your family won't be happy to hear you've been wandering by yourself for days."
>That's one impressive sigh she just let loose, hope they won't be too hard on you kid.

Anon, that was an idle comment, I didn't expect anyone to actually start modding KoDP. Although I was thinking about doing it, myself.

>>37643982
Extremely interested and if I can find the time I'd like to help, if I might, even if only writing for events, advisors, etc.. I've never modded a game but I'll have a look in the guts and see what I turn up. By the way, are you using the original or remastered version? Looks like the remastered one.

>>37644383
He even looks like one of the advisors. The actual names and selection of portraits is randomised each game but there's a couple (typically the heads of the weaponthanes) that look almost uncannily like him.

I'm curious as to what everyone thinks Cirrus might sound like. I'd like to think that, when she sings at least, her voice sounds a little like Vashti Bunyan's, maybe slightly deeper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcZMzH04OwU

Thinking about her singing something like that to the snowfoals under her care while their parents are away, rocking the youngest one to sleep who's swaddled in her mane. A song of the beauty of the world and the simplicity of love and joy in it. Each foal in turn lies down against her, all gazing up to her as long as possible before their heavy eyelids shut.
"Love me through the day and I'll with you go - into summer and the next year's snow," she croons before placing a tender kiss on the foal's forehead. As his eyes fall shut, asleep, she looks about and sees the others curled up around her, smiles to herself, and lies down among them. Her beloved children. As long as their love would abide, she would have all she needed to see her to the next year's snow and every one after.

I'd be lying if I said I had heard of this lady before your post, but I can say having listened to that link that I consider her voice a good fit for Cirrus. Just the right sort of gentleness and feeling.

> As his eyes fall shut, asleep, she looks about and sees the others curled up around her, smiles to herself, and lies down among them. >Her beloved children. As long as their love would abide, she would have all she needed to see her to the next year's snow and every one after.

Cirrus is such a wonderful snowmare, she really is special. Frosty Flakes is the poster mare, no doubt about that, but Cirrus and all art/stories pertaining to her strike the cosy yet ethereal feeling of snowponies the best for me.

To go by the explanation of the Anon who named her:

>Okay, I dunno anything about this mare but she has such a distinct and important-looking appearance I wanted to take care in thinking of a name. Preferably one that involves her trademark long hair.
>I eventually struck gold in discovering the word Cirrus (seer-us) means cloud. Not a snow-making cloud, these are fair weather clouds. But a delicate, thin, powdery, long and wispy cloud composed of ice crystals that fits in the aestethic of a snowy landscape perfectly.
>The word Cirrus is also Latin for "curl" like hair. Now, her hair doesn't seem curly, but that's okay because the word has been related to locks of hair of any sort, the word evolved to mean tendril like hair tendrils. One Wikitionary definition of Cirrus is
>>themane, especially theforelock, of a horse
>And Cirrus also means "curly hook shape" like the way a horse's tail hooks downward at the base. I shit you not, one of the definitions of Cirrus is "mare's tail". Cirrus clouds are nicknamed mare's tail clouds after horses.

>There's even literally an old proverb
>>Mares' tails and mackerel scales make lofty ships to carry low sails.
the meaning of which is that the presence of mares' tail cirrus clouds reliably predicts incoming rain/snow.

>For the other half of her name, I wanted something lunar (maybe even literally just Luna or something) in reference to her crescent mark, but in truth I don't even know if that's what her mark is. Instead I'm gonna settle on Wisp. It's another cloudy name like a wispy cloud, and another hair name. The word wispy in regards to hair means "fine;feathery;soft;volumous;having tufts;pillowy;gossamer" so clearly it's perfect for a snowpone with extra long and soft mane.

>Also as I'm typing this I just learned one of the older meanings of the word wisp was "bundle of hay, straw or grass" as in a measure of horse feed. What the fuck. AND fucking AND Wikitionary says the word wisp means
>>An immeasurable, indefinableessenceof life;soul.

>This is her, folks. Meet Cirrus Wisp.
>>
>>37645624
Because that's her name
>>
>>37645768

Well, I've finally encountered a roadblock. The devs decided to hardcode the scene data, as well as quite possibly the rest of the localization. I'll try my best to crack it (a hex editor obviously works) but regarding actually editing the text and loc, this is going to be tricky. Art assets are of course super moddable, the png's are right there for me to modify. Six Ages seems to behave the same way with the localization files being hardcoded.

Most of the info I've read from http://kingofdragonpass.blogspot.com/2011/02/architecture-overview.html
seems to confirm this. So for now I'm gonna keep trying to crack the moddability wall for the sake of a snowpone game. Otherwise the only thing I can modify is just the art, and I'm not sure if you guys would want that.

>adopted wendigo
Is doing strange things to my heart. Although I know it'd largely follow the footsteps of The Omen with the Windigo filly not wanting to be a creature of hate and destruction and desperately fighting against her nature and destiny. But with the power of snowmares it could be something far more hopeful. By adopting her into the tribe, it's slowly stripped away the parts of her essence that seek to sow discord and feed off disharmony. Instead of a being that thralls the wind to her will, she comes to embody it. When the shaman of the village communes with the wind spirits, they begin to show the windigo-filly of their ways and teach her how to draw the clouds about, of the necessity of blizzards, lifting birds to flight, and yes, even sometimes tousling the mane of a snowpony.

When on their annual (or at whatever interval it takes place) pilgrimage to placate the windigos, a wayward drop of windigo essence latches onto the snowpony group. While it initially manifests itself in the village as a sort of trickster spirit, eventually it coalesces into something more concreate and snowpony shaped. Clichéd but just imagine one of the fillies befriending her, or a shaman's apprentice thinking she's the spirit of a deceased snowfoal. One who doesn't know who she is or how she came to be but feels a fear of other snowponies that she can't explain.
I want Niveous to try putting her scarf on the windigo-filly only for it to just... fall through. So she has Evergreen stand on the other side and they hang the scarf between them, so it looks like the three of them are sharing it. Nivy is something of a loner after all and maybe Evergreen has always found difficulty in befriending others given the trauma of losing her parents (partly why she likes Niveous, given the filly's surprising perceptiveness and care for others), so I'd like to think they'd gladly welcome the windigo-filly into their friendship even if the other foals are scared of her. Or maybe Evergreen wouldn't be quick to welcome her. The windigo-filly is an example of the kind of evil that took her parents after all but maybe over time they could bond over that. The windigo-filly confessing that she doesn't even know if windigos have parents, only that what flashes of insight she has into that part of herself show nothing comparable.
She doesn't want to lose her friend! More than that, she wants to be able to call Evergreen her friend, too. They could bond over their shared lack of parents and who knows? Maybe even Pine Ponder, the sweetest of sweethearts that she is, might take up the mantle of raising the windigo-filly alongside Evergreen. It'd be nice to have somepony that can reach the higher parts of the trees to shake loose the cones the wind hasn't quite touched but that need to be set free.

I think it could make for a cute green. Or, if you wanted something more serious, you could go into the windigos seeking her out to return her to themselves.

As I recall, Wendigos feed on disharmony, and then another anon at some point said that Snowponies can transfer their animosity and other negative feelings into objects, hence the boot screaming.

What if they figure out that they can feed the Wendigo filly by screaming at her...or she just eats the screaming boot? She wouldn't actually digest it, given she's non-corporeal, it would just fall through her but she'd consume all the screaming energy.

Allegedly it was inspired by one of the early greens on that topic, and you've pretty much nailed the theme. Hell, that kind of theming is what attracts me to this thread: That low undercurrent of danger or sorrow, but counterbalanced by more than enough cute to keep it from being overwhelming.

no, once it's full they give it to a windigo and it chugs it like a boot of beer
after five or six fillings the boot is too worn out to contain the feelings and they need a new boot.
It is custom for an expedition to have a "sacrificial" pair of boots for that purpose.

This is great tbqh. The older ponies maintain stashes of emergency supplies (including warm clothes(including boots)), and tell the littlest ones that windigos like the boots, especially when you wear them.
The windigos also like fire and smoke.
You should appease them when necessary.

It's your time to shine and make the snowponies into a trend for all the fandom. Don't lost this chance guys. I will copy paste this for you guys

"Hi everyone!
As some of you may know already, today is the 11th anniversary of the premiere of MLP:FIM, and although by now the show is over, the fandom continues, and G5 is already here!
We think for this anniversary it’d be great to show ponies taking up the spirit of the movie, overcoming their fear or distrust of others to work and have fun together. So the prompt this time is:
Show a pony (or other FiM race) meeting, having fun, working with, and/or learning about other kinds of ponies (race or culture) or creatures!

To enter, simply submit a picture that you created celebrating the anniversary, and use the tag mlp fim’s eleventh anniversary. It can be just about anything, no minimum quality, character count, or anything – it just has to be related to MLP’s anniversary and relate to the prompt. Anyone who submits an image that they drew will get a 11th Anniversary badge in return!
It doesn’t matter how good you can draw, or even if you’ve never drawn before! Just create some art!
The deadline is 21:00 PM Sunday, November 7th GMT for images following the prompt, and 21:00 PM Sunday October 17th GMT for those just related to the anniversary. Have fun and happy birthday MLP:FiM!"

I hope you participate with your snowponies, good luck :)

What if snowponies for Nightmare Night build scary snowmonsters, with icicles for teeth and horns?

Arctic Ink could paint spooky paintings or masks for the foals, Flurry since she likes cooking could make themed treats, Niveous would probably get a kick out of spooking people more than usual.

Perhaps Dry Kindling could help oversee a large bonfire that is traditionally maintained all the night, earlier on in the night the foals have their fun and its a celebration, and then later the shamans and the older snowpones remember those passed and share the warmth of friendship by the fire.

>>37632656
M4 (I think the name Ice Elated [Isolated because she's a loner] had been suggested for her) could return to the settlement and tell spooky stories of her expeditions alone far north, such as her times in the Crystal Forest. Which has all manners of hazards of its own, not just the environment, and at night, with no light to twinkle on the crystalline "leaves", its a exhaustingly cold, bleak forest of near invisible trees reflecting thinly starlight, and who knows what else lurks there...

Small wonder her sister Cold Shoulder makes a fuss of her after returning. I think Ice is older than Cold, and seems to be closer to Bundle Up's age, they were probably fillies together.
>>
>>37665713
I think the snowponies making the scary snowmonsters would tie well with >>3763733. The adults would make the snowmonsters to scare the fillies and teach them how to face them together. Maybe even use the masks Arctic Ink help makes to help them feel a little braver. Then later on the night they all wind down with treats and songs to remember those who perished. Ice Elated would have plenty of stories to tell too.

>Arctic Ink could paint spooky paintings or masks for the foals, Flurry since she likes cooking could make themed treats, Niveous would probably get a kick out of spooking people more than usual.
Whittle Hoof could make spooky carvings to decorate homes and as props for stories, and Puffins could enlist the help of her feathered friends to see if this is the year she can turn the scares back on Niveous.

>Perhaps Dry Kindling could help oversee a large bonfire that is traditionally maintained all the night
Now I really like that. Foals earlier in the night help gather wood for the bonfire but dedicated tenders like Dry Kindling handle keeping it fed and under control. But since she’s snowponified Anonfilly, I also like the thought of her angrily protesting to, say, Crackling Fire that she can stay up and maintain it. Only to eventually tire out and awaken later in the night with a fur blanket over her back. When she awakes, Crackling Fire claims to know nothing about it and is only glad to have her back to help keep the fire going through the rest of the early morning.

>M4 (I think the name Ice Elated [Isolated because she's a loner] had been suggested for her) could return to the settlement and tell spooky stories of her expeditions alone far north
You know she'd have a little pouch the foals all crowd around and ask her to open because she always has some artefact from her travels. Say, for example, what looks like a simple icicle but even when held against the fire it doesn't melt. Why? Is it a floewolf tooth? Oh no, it's from something far deadlier: the talon of a dreaded drift burrower.
If you go far enough north, across the northern sea, you might see things that should not be. Things that exist only to hate and hurt. Things that move under the snow and ice and when snowponies bed down for the night, reach up through it and pull them down to their frozen doom. That's why the talon is so sharp; it has to be, to claw its way through such thick ice and packed snow. And it was one night in particular that Ice Elation awoke to find herself within the pitch-black of a drift burrower's lair...
Or something like that.

I've been racking my brain for some spooky stories to write up for Nightmare Night so if you haven't something planned yourself, I'd happily use that idea. Ice Elation recounting some stories from her travels would make a good framing device, too. You’ve got some really cosy ideas, Anon.

>while her sister Cold Shoulder makes a fuss of her after returning.
I like to think that's part of Cold Shoulder presenting Ice Elation with the cloak in pic related. No, Cold is not going to let her head off to places the stars don't shine without something to keep her warm and remind her of home. When Ice returns, it's inevitably looking more raggedy and probably torn in a few places which leads to Cold Shoulder chiding her and fussing greatly over it.
>>
>>37665819
And she's scaring the foals too much! She should be getting her cloak repaired and warming herself by the fire at home, Cold just put on a pot of tea. Honestly, she's gone all year and when she does come home, the least she could do is take a rest. Which Ice just accepts because she still loves her sister. Maybe that's part of why she adventures as she does - somepony has to hold back the monsters that threaten those she cares about.

>I think Ice is older than Cold
Absolutely what I was thinking and I'm glad to see I wasn't alone. Cold grew up watching her sister's strength and stoicism and tried her best to emulate that, which is partly what resulted in her grumpy demeanour. The other, larger, part of that is trying to deal with her own worrying over Ice being gone for such long periods and to such far-flung places.
Bundle Up being her peer is wonderful and I think would add a really nice touch to Cold having her make a cloak and boots for Ice. Cold trying to convince Bundle Up that Ice needs something to keep her safe in places where the wind cuts as deeply as a knife and the snow and ice are colder than death. Bundle Up shaking her head and assuring Cold that Ice is the hardiest mare in the village, maybe even all the lands, and if there's anypony who doesn't need protection it's probably her. Still, if nothing else it’d be a token of home that’d warm her heart as much as her body.
Even as a filly, Ice Elation would go off exploring by herself, always feeling the wind tugging at her mane to see what else lies out in the world. If Bundle Up was as sickly as a filly, I could easily see her being the one to fuss over Ice back then. How their personalities might lead to clashes but over time Ice comes to realise that Bundle Up only does it out of genuine care and concern with Ice becoming somewhat protective of her. Cold Shoulder being born only further seals it - she understands Bundle Up’s behaviour now.
>Cold is assuredly proud of her sister but still frets over her, and Ice makes out like she doesn't need fussing over but loves it really, she feels home the most when Cold is being so considerate.
She’d never say it but there are times when she misses the warmth and familiarity of her home. Yes, when she returns there is that bit of exasperation at having her independence stepped upon but when she’s lying by the fire with her sister, surrounded by her friends in the village, she remembers her fillyhood and how they were always there for her to help her when she was sick or hurt from her adventures. And still are.

>>37665773
I really like that idea, too. You could even work it into the Tundra Trackers and say they all had to go through a rite of passage, facing a number of different snowmonsters to prepare them for what they might face on rescues.

>Whittle Hoof could make spooky carvings to decorate homes and as props for stories, and Puffins could enlist the help of her feathered friends to see if this is the year she can turn the scares back on Niveous.
Yes and yes, both would be great.

>The Dry Kindling/Crackling Fire interaction
Aw, cute! (And a good way to cover I got the wrong pony first time around, I had meant Crackling for it, but I like this more).

>I've been racking my brain for some spooky stories to write up for Nightmare Night so if you haven't something planned yourself, I'd happily use that idea. Ice Elation recounting some stories from her travels would make a good framing device, too.
I like that idea, the pouch that fascinates the foals, the stories of adventure and danger; please use that idea, its a good one. I like the drift burrower!

Perfect! I wish I had more to say in response but what I can say is I love the ideas, Cold and Ice's interactions when younger and Bundle showing her caring side even as a filly (fits her "big sis" to the foals aspect wonderfully).

>...but when she’s lying by the fire with her sister, surrounded by her friends in the village, she remembers her fillyhood and how they were always there for her to help her when she was sick or hurt from her adventures. And still are.

>I really like that idea, too. You could even work it into the Tundra Trackers and say they all had to go through a rite of passage, facing a number of different snowmonsters to prepare them for what they might face on rescues.

That would be amazing, it works in well. I'd imagine a certain snowfilly would have to be reminded that while their bravery is impressive, the sculptures are just approximations of the real thing. Can almost see Ice Elation chuckling a little at youthful exuberance, she makes an effort to help out with such training when it co-insides with her returns to the village.

Sorry, Anon, I overlooked a couple of things. Such are the joys of shit sleep.

>earlier on in the night the foals have their fun and its a celebration, and then later the shamans and the older snowpones remember those passed and share the warmth of friendship by the fire.
I love it. Especially if the foals lie down by their elders, one by one, as the night goes on only to be briefly woken when the ceremony takes place. Calmer after a nap, they enjoy hearing the stories of loved ones and a few might even venture to add their own tales of elderly relatives.
Some would drift off back to sleep, though, comforted by the words of their elders as they speak of loved ones now gone. Though their land is harsh and that night ushers in a darker and harder season, as long as they have each other the kind spirits they nourish together will see them through any hardship.

>The Crystal Forest probably has all manners of hazards of its own, not just the environment, and at night, with no light to twinkle on the crystalline "leaves", its a exhaustingly cold, bleak forest of near invisible trees reflecting thinly starlight, and who knows what else lurks there...
Perfect. What a wonderful contrast between the serenity and beauty of it during the day and how drastically it changes without light to illuminate it. The trees themselves becoming hazards is a marvellous idea and, for example, the image of floewolves stalking between them with only the light of their eyes refracted by the crystal trunks is a little unsettling. How they suddenly disappear when strange noises drift up from further in the valley; if such things can frighten even the terrible floewolves, what could they possibly be?
Some kind of shapeshifter, perhaps, something composed of crystal. Old ‘leaves’ from the trees swept about by wisps of wind from the windigos further north that slowly took on some of their malice. When it steps forth from between the trees—as such a being has no difficulty navigating them—it looks subtly wrong. Oh it’s snowpone-shaped alright but even aside from the odd, jagged angles of its body, the way it catches the moonlight isn’t right. Night is a sacred time, where the moon and stars shine gentle, rarefied light upon the world but the crystal mimics (need to think of a better name) twist it and turn it into something malevolent where the crystal trees beautifully refract the daylight.
It lulls the unwary further into the valley with gentle ‘singing’ by vibrating its crystalline body. What happens there, none have returned that may say.
Honestly, though, with a setting like that there’s a lot you could do with monster designs and such. Especially if you subscribe to the idea of the great icebergs of the far north holding strange creatures in them.

>>37665846
Perfect. You know Cold Shoulder would be insisting that Ice doesn't make the snowmonsters too frightening, as well.

That's fine Anon, no problem.

>Though their land is harsh and that night ushers in a darker and harder season, as long as they have each other the kind spirits they nourish together will see them through any hardship.

I'd imagine in particular any foals who have had the tragedy of losing a parent (or both parents, but I'd like to think that is rather rare, a little too edgy perhaps) that year are given especial attention, and they'd be reminded more than ever that they belong and are loved. That they aren't alone and never will be, and their parent's memories live on with the community, as does their love for their foals.

>the shapeshifter/ice stalker (and how one would spook even the dangerous floewolves)
>and how it sings
Brilliant! I love it. I couldn't myself think of something like that to be more unique to the forest, but that idea of yours fits the bill perfectly. The name really isn't too bad already ,it works for now just fine.

Depends on who you ask. The grouchy grandmares will tell you it's Niveous because her snowballs always get under your mane and stuck in your scarf but when you try to find the little troublemaker, she's nowhere to be seen! All you find are the snowmonsters she'll whip up outside your door to give you a fright!
They also never stop talking about that foul-mouthed filly Dry Kindling. There was a time she was so nice, always going on about 'faggots' this and 'faggots' that, oh probably offering to get some sticks for her elders. Nowadays, however, whenever Crackling Fire isn't around, anypony that looks at her sideways gets called a 'floewolf-fondler'. Probably picked up that kind of language from Niveous.
Why can't she be more like that nice Frostbite? Always brings tea around to the older mares, she's so considerate. And did you hear about the time Niveous switched out the tea in one of the flasks with dirty snow? Well...

Dry Kindling was originally conceived of as a snowponified Anonfilly, Nonny, so it makes sense for her to use 'faggot' in that way until she realises it just causes confusion. However, Wintergreen was also made afterwards so I don't know if that still applies.
>And Niveous is too nice to do anything like that, she's a prankster, not an asshole.
Dry Kindling was the one who did it and then blamed it on Niveous. The grandmares believed her because Kindling is such a lil shid she made up a convincing sob story. I agree, Niveous may be a prankster but she's not the kind who'd go out of her way to harm or do anything mean. After all, it was said that she'd never throw snowballs at Frostbite out of such consideration.

C'mon, Nonny, the way I said the grandmares spoke of Dry Kindling taking after Niveous should've been a dead giveaway! Dry Kindling's careful to cultivate an appearance of innocence while finding other fillies to blame her shenanigans on.
I keep thinking of picrel where Crackling Fire looks rather ominous and intimidating when I imagine her dealing with Dry Kindling after finding out about it all. Snowpones have kind spirits, absolutely, but they're not pushovers and Crackling would have no problems setting Dry Kindling on the straight and narrow. Marching her around Snowpitt to personally apologise to every snowpone involved (and especially the other fillies for wrongly implicating them).
>Frostbite has been through far too much already, the whole village looks out for her.
I can't help but imagine that every time there's a snowball fight going on and Frostbite passes by, Niveous starts running around in a panic to all the other foals involved, telling them they have to stop in case they hit Frostbite! Which inevitably draws an exasperated eyeroll from the older filly but she knows Niveous does it out of consideration for her and so tries not to complain. Which might lead to something like:

>That was it, she'd had enough of this nonsense.
>It was getting to the point where Frostbite was afraid to go out, knowing her friend would spoil the fun of the others.
>Her booted hooves crunched on the snow as she turned about and marched towards the white filly, wearing her scarf for a change.
>A filly who, in spite of the looks of disappointment of her compatriots, still beamed at Frostbite.
>"Hey, Frosty!" Niveous called out, trotting forward.
>Perfect. It was a little awkward with the boots but Frostbite bent down and began scooping a measure of snow between her forelegs.
>Niveous drew up to a stop, still a little further way from Frostbite, and looked on in confusion as the older filly squeezed and shaped snow between her hooves until it began to look suspiciously like a snowball.
>The fillies who'd been muttering among themselves fell to a hush, watching intently as Frostbite hefted the snowball in a hoof.
>And tossed it at the snow-white filly standing in the centre of their gathering.
>The snowball hit niveous squarely on the nose, splattering powdery snow across her face.
>Silence turned to giggling and then quickly to laughter.
>Frostbite herself brought a snow-dusted boot to her face, trying to keep herself from laughing too much at her friend's look of confusion.
>"Hey!" Niveous shouted, breaking into a canter towards Frostbite. "You can't do that!"
>Still trying to bring her chuckling under control, Frostbite lowered her hoof and said, "oh? Why not?"
>Drawing up to the other filly, Niveous stomped a hoof and shook the remaining snow from her face.
>"Because!" she growled.
>"Because... ?" Try as she might, Frostbite couldn't keep a smile from her lips.
>>
>>37672635
>"Because-... Because I can't throw one back!" Niveous nearly shouted, stomping another hoof against the snow.
>The look of sheer fury on Niveous' face was too much for Frostbite to suppress a chuckle at. By the stars but how could she look so adorable even angry?
>"C'mon, Nivy, I thought you're supposed to throw snowballs in a snowball fight."
>And just like that, the scowl of disgust Niveous wore melted as she first turned her eyes from the other filly and then looked back, kicking a hoof against the snow.
>”Yeah but not at you, Frosty,” Niveous said, quietly.
>Frostbite leaned forward, putting her nose to Niveous’ and shivered at the last few errant bits of snow there.
>”I won’t freeze if a little snow gets on me.” Frostbite leaned forward a shade more, rubbing her nose against the other filly’s. “I’ll be okay.”
>”But…” Niveous trailed off, and in spite of how obviously she tried not to, Frostbite saw her eyes trail up towards ears now covered by muffs.
>Could she really blame her friend for looking out for her so carefully?
>Maybe not but she had to do something about all of this.
>”Tell you what,” Frostbite said, taking one of Niveous’ hooves with her own, “I’ll show you what’ll happen if a little snow gets on me.”
>Not giving the other filly time to object or ask, Frostbite brought Niveous’ hoof along the snow to scoop up a little of it.
>Looking down at her hoof and then back up, Niveous shook her head but was met only with the easy, kind smile of her friend still guiding her hoof up.
>Up and over to the opening of Frostbite’s cloak and then against the thick part of her coat that lay against her chest.
>Frostbite shivered but held Niveous’ snowy hoof there for a moment until allowing the filly to draw it back and shake the remaining snow from it.
>Even through her coat, the cold reached its claws in towards her chest and brought the memory of sharp winds biting at her ears. She reflexively flicked her ears but breathed an internal sigh of relief at feeling them till snugly guarded by the muffs.
>”S-See? I-I’m fine! I d-didn’t freeze!”
>It did little to wipe the look of worry from Niveous’ face and Frostbite was left to take a few steadying breaths, forcing her mind from the cold.
>”I’m okay, Nivy.” The snow-white filly chewed her lip and Frostbite tapped a hoof against her side, where a small bulge in the cloak lay. “Pine gave me some of her tea.”
>Still, her friend looked up with unsure eyes.
>Frostbite sighed and brought one of her hooves up to pat at Niveous shoulder. “How about this: you go back to the snowball fight and I’ll watch. Then you can see nopony’s gonna hit me, okay?”
>Niveous turned about to her friends who looked on curiously, then back to Frostbite. “Promise you’ll go inside if you’re cold?”
>Frostbite nickered. “I promise I’ll keep some tea for you, but only if you win!”
