This is a game about ponies getting lost in the woods.

Quickstart:
>arrow keys to move, hold shift to run
>other controls are listed in-game
>press A on trees/rocks to gather wood/stone
>use the workbench at spawn to craft axe/pickaxe
>open inventory with E and assign tools to hotkeys 1-9
>use tools to cut down trees/rocks (away from spawn) for more resources
>build a house, farm, obstacle course, etc
>place a ward in your house to prevent others from messing with it
>type /help in the chat and read about /spawn, /where, /sethome, and /home

New stuff:

We'll be starting from scratch and building a house live on stream to show new players how it's done, with voice chat so we can explain as we go. I'll see what I can do tonight. So far it looks like only the map loading part needs a rewrite, and it seems I did a bunch of work toward that rewrite at some point in the past. So it might not be too bad.

Main thing is it needs to be animated for all the walk/run/sit/sleep/fly animation frames. Hats are easier since the head is the same shape in every frame, so you can just draw one version of the hat for each direction and then copy-paste it onto all the other frames.

If you want to draw/animate the explorer outfit for all the remaining poses, I'll add it to the game. Here's the sprite sheet for mares, with green boxes on the frames that are currently used in-game.

For testing the walk animations and such, you can use this site:

This generally looks fine so far. The one major problem I notice is:
>On the north-facing level 3 flying animation (7th row), the lower part of the legs should be drawn over the saddlebags, instead of the other way around. The legs are stretched out behind the pony, making them closer to the "camera" than the bags are.

And a couple more minor things, both on the right-facing walk animation:

Works fine in Firefox, so must be a Chrome issue. Have tried cache/cookie clear, and tried disabling ABP, so it's likely something with my build. It lets me log in but still says "Using guest account" in the upper right corner of the server menu. And has me as Anon### when I select the server. Will continue troubleshooting on my end, since FF works fine.

Oh yes, I see what you mean. With the white of the eyes blending into the white coat, that bottom pixel of the iris does sort of stick out. I don't think I'm going to do anything about it (if it bothers people then they can set their coat color to literally anything other than pure white), but still, good catch.

I was planning to add the ability to plant normal trees at the same time I add fruit trees. But maybe making tree-planting an earth pony exclusive would be a good idea. Rock farming could also be interesting - I'll have to think about how that might work.

Okay, here's a weird thing. I get lots of rubberbanding and choppy movement on my desktop with a ryzen 1600 and rx570, while the game is buttery smooth when playing on my old i5-2540m. It happens both under Linux and Windows on both devices, so I'd guess it's a hardware issue? I tried lowering the resolution on my desktop as that was the first thing that came to mind but nothing changed when it came to performance.

To be fair, AMD is also horribly lazy when it comes to certain things. They declared openGL to be over back in 2014 or so, and have refused to do any improvements for it in their drivers, so you end up with windows openGL performance on radeon cards that's usually 5-ish years behind nvidia. Most of it is fixed in the community maintained linux radeon drivers, so in that case it's just pure laziness on AMD's end.

It's unlikely to be a CPU problem. Since you describe it as stuttering when you move, my guess would actually be a flaky internet connection. The game doesn't handle packet loss or variations in latency very well. The visible effect of that would usually be rubberbanding (getting snapped back to a previous position when you try to move). The other common performance problem is WebGL rendering being slow, but that seems unlikely on such a modern machine.

That's really interesting. Looking at https://wiki.mozilla.org/Security/Fingerprinting I think the main cause is probably

The game uses Date.now() to determine how much time has passed between frames, and uses that to determine the character's position when moving, among other things. 100ms resolution means the movement will be a bit choppy (effectively locked to 10 FPS, no matter what your computer is capable of), and the 100ms of jitter means the movespeed will randomly vary up and down.

I turned on privacy.resistFingerprinting and saw the stuttering you described. There's a separate option for the timer jitter (privacy.resistFingerprinting.reduceTimerPrecision.jitter), and setting that to false made the game at least somewhat playable. It still has the 10 FPS cap (the reduceTimerPrecision.microseconds can only turn the precision down, not up, it seems), and the game can't detect the shift key (???) so you'd have to rebind run to something else, but at least the stuttering is gone.

I'm thinking about adding "village wards", for protecting common areas (like roads between houses) within villages. This would be a giant ward (probably 256x256, compared to the 33x33 of normal wards) that can overlap normal wards and automatically grants build permission to anyone whose ward it overlaps (those being the residents of the village). Normal wards would override it, so even if you live in a village, you can still set the permissions on your house however you like - the village ward is only for protecting the village's common areas against edits from ponies who don't live there (and who don't have /vpermit from the mayor).

The reason I'm asking instead of just doing it is that I'm not sure how useful this would be given the server's current population (and if it's not going to be useful, I can spend the time on something else, like fruit trees). What do you all think?

That's a pretty good question. I got the original frames from this thread https://4archive.org/board/mlp/thread/25669207/everfree-outpost#p25708625. The explorer helmet already in game is credited to nonnykins in the files, so maybe these were done by the same person? All right, here's the full story.

The server crashed due to running out of disk space. When it crashes, some parts of the save data can get out of sync with other parts, which means the save needs to be repaired before starting the server back up (otherwise it'll just crash again). But yesterday's update changed part of the save format (specifically the way wards are tracked), and the tools I normally use for repairing the save don't support the new format yet. Rather than leave the server offline for 8-10 hours until I have time to update the repair tools, I decided to restore from last night's backup instead. (Also gave it roughly 4x the current disk space, so it should be a while before it runs out again.)

Tonight I'll work on an autosave feature, to stop saves from getting corrupted on crash.

Sorry about that. I had told people that the outfit spawns in all the same places as hats, but in fact it was only spawning in dungeons, not caves. I had added it to the dungeon loot table but forgot that there was a separate loot table for cave chests. It's now in both tables.

Note that only newly generated chests will use the new loot table. If you go back to finish a partially-explored dungeon, for example, there's a good chance that whatever chest you find was already generated using the old loot table.

Hit F2 D C to open the config editor, select "keybindings", and click the Reset button. You can also try resetting "ui_keybindings" which is further down. This works for lots of other settings too. Just look for the ones with a blue * next to the name, since those are the ones that have been changed from their default values.

If you manage to screw up your settings so bad that you can't get to the config editor in-game anymore, you can also reach it from the server list by clicking More -> Settings -> Open Editor

I love the new roof pieces, and being able to change mane and tail color separately is SO much fucking nicer than what it was like before.

I don't want to add another set of RGB sliders to the character creation screen since I think it's already quite cluttered since I added the separate mane color sliders. Also, right now each layer of the player sprite is either entirely fixed color (like hats) or entirely player-selectable color (like mane/tail/body). So I'd either need to split the eyes into two layers (one for whites/pupil/eyelash and one for the iris) or else update the shaders to support both in one layer.

However, I think it would not be too hard to let you select an eye type+color from a fixed list. This is already mostly supported in the code, just there's only one type to choose from at the moment. If you want to put the sprites together for more variants, then I will add them.

There are several additional variants in the MLP online sprite sheets here:

You can easily throw out several of them in that case. I'd go with Twilight, AJ, FS and RD, simply because they should offer visibly different eye colors even at EO resolution when compared to each other and the one we already have. Yes, clicking the video gives the video embed input focus, so you'll need to click back off of it to get your inputs going to the game again. I'll see if I can at least fix it so clicking on the canvas will work, rather than only the chat window.

I finally tracked down this Chrome auth bug and fixed it. Turns out there were two different cookie restrictions enabled in Chrome 91. The first one was bypassed by the CORS headers I was already using, but the second needed a separate workaround.
