Have you seen the latest memelike, Loop Hero? Your guy does all the moving and fighting on his own - the gameplay just consists of swapping out equipment between fights and playing cards to adjust the terrain to give him combat bonuses or change what kinds of monsters will spawn. But it's got cards (just like Slay the Spire, the greatest roguelike of the past 10 years), the initial map (a featureless loop of predetermined length, surrounded by empty space) is technically randomly generated, and after winning or abandoning each run you start a new one from scratch (after buying upgrades back at the town, assuming you were able to grind enough materials to afford some). So naturally you get dipshit reviewers calling it things like
>the next roguelike breakout hit
>the freshest, most unique roguelike I've ever played
>>
>>36791706
imagine putting all that effort into a game that plays itself
why
>>
>>36791681
Reaction time is largely genetic. I have boomer reflexes too, but I do notice small improvements by playing matchups a lot and remaining very focused on staring at my opponent's character and blocking. Having poor reactions means we need to go for reads a bit more often than the zoomers, which is still workable.
Not that you should go drop a couple hundred bucks but a good high refresh rate monitor also probably helps on the margins.

>reactions are genetics rather than something you can improve upon
Well that fucking sucks. I find reading your opponent is twice as hard as just to simply react to it. If I see a small window I'll try to jab through it but that usually get me into a counter hit or I just up back my opponent block strings which help read my opponent crossup but leave me open for lows.

Why is this shit so hard?
>>
>>36792229
It takes experience more than anything
Pure reaction time doesn't actually matter that much, most things in fighting games are either not humanly reactable in the first place, or slow enough that anyone can if they're ready.
Oleander's 6C is a good example. 23f startup is 350ms, unless you're in your 70s that should be very doable, but people get hit by it all the fucking time because they're too busy thinking about all the other nonsense going on in the match. Learning to block it isn't about making your reaction speed better, it's learning to actually see it when it happens.
>>
If I'm a newb I should just omit Fred for now and focus on Ole's neutral and general gameplan, correct?
>>
>>36792282
Probably, because she basically becomes a puppet character like Pom when he's out, which is more difficult to wrap your head around when you're starting out.
>>
>>36792292
So what you're saying is ole mains should play pom first to have maximum fred gainz?
>>
>>36792282
Fred can be pretty complicated but he's still really strong even if you only barely use him.
if you're completely new to her probably not, just end combos in level 1 for damage, but before too long it's easily worth using level 2 and then just doing 4[D] or 1[D] constantly to bully people
>>
>>36792332
I'm new to this game in general, probably played around 50 online matches.

Fred doesn't seem as crazy as Pom does but he still feels pretty nuts. Took me a while to understand that he can start his moves on his own and doesn't abide by the rules the other two characters experience (he can just execute a move while Oleander is already in the startup/recovery frames of her own, for example).

4D and 1D do look simpler, though. 4D is pretty slow but you can mix them up hard with it and 1D seems to be able to make everything you throw out safe, so I'll try to utilize those while I actually figure out this game.

Thanks for the advice, fellas.
>>
>>36792282
Depends on how noob you are. Sadly all of the lvl2 supers are kind of crucial, and you kind of never want to use meter for a lvl1 super unless it's guaranteed to close out a round. It definitely pays to check out how to do some of those pseudo-infinite blockstrings with fred because he can arguably win rounds on his own.
>>
>>36792548
I've been playing SF for a bit now but I'm very not great, so yeah.

Oh, for sure, I don't plan on just sticking to base Ole forever. Just wondering if I could go no-Fred for a bit while I learn her normals and combos in real matches; I guess it's a yes, but not for long.

Thanks!

>23f startup is 350ms, unless you're in your 70s that should be very doable
Netplay is an important factor as well here, but I agree, raw reactions are nice but not critical to most fighting games.
>>
>>36792548
>Sadly all of the lvl2 supers are kind of crucial
i don't feel the basket case that paprika lays down isn't that crucial
>>
>>36793086
It adds another layer of randomness to the match that pap can exploit, and allows for a bigger damaging combo if you want to use the meter to finish off your opponent.

Depending how good you're using Basket, it can win you some games.
>>
>>36793086
Right that one may be an exception. Even then I wouldn't spend meter unless it was to secure a kill cause like there are pretty big combos where you do lvl2 and then the basket teleport mid combo for big damage and a great wakeup game. Just in general it feels like the 2 bar supers all get you great mileage. You really start to notice a pattern where in the first round you'll at most see one super to cap the round, then in the second round you might see a combo into lvl2 from either player but the one who's a round behind will try really hard to not go into the third round empty handed and would rather opt to go for some resets and keep the meter for round 3. And the guy who's a round ahead will never spend the bars unless it's a 100% won round because you'd rather take the chance and go to a third round with three bars than spend prematurely and risk a third round without bars. Like it's just that much of a head start. Meter management seems pretty "figured out" in this game.
>>
>>36793338
Maybe before 2.0 but I don't think this is very true any more. A life lead is worth noticeably less now, cross canters are still underused by most of the playersbase, early supers are way better because of the scaling changes, and most of them still have utility as punishes, reversals or frametraps outside of combos.
Oleander really doesn't want to spend meter if she isn't getting Fred but Velvet doesn't give a shit, she can throw cross canters around willy nilly and is perfectly happy confirming into level 1 off a random projectile for the damage and distance. Tian's level 2 is good now but looping level 1 hard knockdowns is still and extremely valid playstyle, Pom's level 1 is still +150, etc.
It's not as important as in something like Guilty Gear but smart meter usage is still really valuable.

Basket is notably bad and I don't use it unless
>I have only 2 bars and need to kill to end the round and am willing to roll the dice on mediocre damage
>I have excessive meter, at which point I set up a basket and go for an HKD into crossup basket mix with a roll or another lv 1
Contrast this with lv 1 which is a mediocre reversal, an HKD that works at JDMax, a frametrap off your unsafe moves, and almost as much damage as lv 2's expected value as a combo tool.
Basket is quite shitty. The crossunder mix is fun and the ability to randomly Poggers a Tianhuo's health bar is kind of amusing, the RNG and general lack of interesting utility makes me wish I had a better lv 2.

Who were you playing? If it was Arizona you probably gotta do your magic dash (half circle forward+magic)

This is an optional area you don't have to do it.

Generally sidequests are harder than main storyline in video games, yeah.
>>
>>36796301
Only downside to joining Leaf is you can't get the Shadow Palettes if you defeat everyone as bear (only works on official servers). And you can't become the bear if you do Salt Mines by yourself. You need at least one other person to defeat.

>>

Play on the easiest difficulty, and you should be able to get all of story mode's secrets. A lot of them are just about exploration, not winning fights.

There *was* a guide on the Steam community, but it seems to be missing right now...
>>
>>36796569
>I skipped the magic tutorial since I picked up the dodge tutorial directly from the menu
Hmm, something you should consider is that "dodging" in fighting games is generally fairly hard and not really a thing you should be thinking about as a beginner. Your primary defensive tool is going to be blocking, or holding backwards, and learning your moves is very important. The tutorial you were stuck on is mostly trying to teach you some of the properties of your moves and movement options--for example, magic dash makes Arizona turn into a projectile invulnerable pancake, letting her quickly get up close to characters with projectiles like Velvet or Oleander.
The thread's here to help you and call you a casual bitch, good luck if you decide to stick it out in the game.

Game has rollback netcode, I've had matches against players with 300 ping and it be stable. If it's not stable you can just increase your frame delay and it will make it more stable. TFH legitimately has some of the best online of any fighting game, you should try it and see if it works before you despair. Worst case you try it for less than two hours, decide the online doesn't work at all with your net, and refund it

You’d think that with the game’s parallels to racism/xenophobia and its strong female characters (that are strong because they’re actually skilled and competent, not because the world bends over for them because they’re girls) in this day-and age that the series would be a goldmine for larger studios to promote and fund.

Better to let the devs have their freedom though, even if it’s taking a while longer.

Do NOT Enjoy being hugged by humans.

In fact, I’m pretty sure 6/7 of just the main characters don’t like hugs at all, let alone human hugs. We’ve seen how rampant xenophobia is in Foenum. Think how weird they see humans; no fur/scales, no hooves, no muzzles, etc. Basically like a giant Ice Sprite (which only the reindeer are really used to) but not small and cute.

Serious question, when I've got the matchmaking running in the background while in training mode or whatever, and there's a match found. I can hit start to see the match where it shows me the ping and how long the other guy has been playing but at that point it seems I no longer have the option to not actually accept the match? Like no matter what I press it will make me go through with the match even if the ping is 300 or there's a huge skill disparity. Am I missing something? Is that how it is supposed to be?

Then why does it even show me and make me wait ten seconds? Just to taunt me? Like I don't even have the possibility to set a max ping limit as far as I can tell.

Patch Notes - Version 2.0.2

Small hotfix going out to fix a few issues with replays and some issues unique to Linux.

Bugfixes

Fixed an issue with replay saving that would cause duplicate files being created, and desyncs even when played back in versions they were recorded in.
Fixed an issue with replays where changing gameplay settings (like time and rounds) would cause replay files to break.
Fixed Mane6 player portrait banner showing instead of backer banner in the replay browser menu.
Linux: Fixes towards visual errors of background blur effects on level 2 supers.
Linux: Fixed a Story Mode softlock situation during dialogue in the outer tavern in Reine.
>>
>>36819596
>>36819580
(And neither do I for that matter but I guess refusing to play someone based on how little practice they've had is kinda sorta rude)
>>
>>36819494
>make me wait ten seconds
In the ten-second countdown, once the icon on your side turns to the blue arrows, you can hit whatever the menu "accept" button is, and it'll turn to a green checkmark. Like in a normal challenge, if both players accept, it skips the rest of the countdown.

>max ping limit
Be careful with that setting. It's probably based on the ping you see on the matchmaking challenge screen, which is often wildly inaccurate. I basically ignore that number at this point, after so many cases where it says the ping is something ridiculous like 450, only for it to turn out to be 150 or even lower according to the in-game netgraph.
>>
>>36819589
I wouldn't know, I'm not a shitter myself, I evaluate every player's name individually, without prejudice of hours played.

>>36819596
That's matchmaking's problem of not taking into consideration "Didn't want a rematch last time these 2 IDs fought together", in that case I just stop playing and do something else.

Maybe there should be like a blacklist or something. Kinda ass in a game that's already small as this, but, it would probably be the more casual friendly thing and that's what TFH is all about eh.

and don't tell me you're not checking out that hour count and judging people profusely. I know I am. If you've got 800 hours and suck you're a bad person, if you've got 10 hours and kick asses you're on the way to heaven. The benchmark you are judged by is, of course, my own hour count.

the max ping setting appears to be more of a soft tolerance. I've had it set to 150 since I got the game but I still get matches at 200+/400+.
A common problem with multiplayer games (FGs especially) is that if you give everyone hard caps on who they can match with but you don't have a playerbase large enough, tons of people will be left waiting hours to find a match. After a certain amount of time the threshold increases so that at least you'll find *someone* eventually

>>36819483
>>36819487
I really hate the way matchmaking shows the ping before you hit "accept", but not the playtime until after you hit it, at which point you're locked in. I'm betting it's intentional, otherwise people would back out more often and matchmaking already takes forever due to how few people play the game

Newfag here, been watching some tournament sets and feel like all the players have more health, is it just my untrained perception of the game or is there a different setting people agree to play on?

Damage is a bit different this patch than it used to be, maybe that's coloring your perception?
Otherwise no, health values are the same across gamemodes, Tian/Shanty/Pom 4800, Velvet/Ole 5100, Pap/Ari 5350.

The change to the scaling was not a small one, it's quite noticeable. As far as I can tell the first couple of hits now do nearly unscaled damage but then at some point it falls off to a point where you're way better off ending the combo (because like in skullgirls, the one who's getting combo'd gains more and more meter with each hit, scaling in reverse). Before that scaling would kick in pretty early and then just stay at, like, a quarter or whatever of what moves did normally and you got most damage by just making the combos longer and longer. The juggle decay bar now also fills up faster.

I'm pulling the numbers out of my ass but what they did feels VERY good imho. The game used to be uncomfortably "low damage" before and now it's like, get a good starter and your combo does a LOT of damage, get a bad starter like jab xx jab xx medium and your combo is basically just an excuse to set up a reset. And if I get combo'd for hours on end for hardly any damage I don't even feel bad because they are just gifting me a ton of meter.

Oh yeah and the entire thing is like two weeks old so basically every video you see online will probably have the old scaling.
>>
>>36822986
>the first couple of hits now do nearly unscaled damage but then at some point it falls off to a point where you're way better off ending the combo
Yes, this is correct. Not sure of the details but it's something like this
>old version: damage multiplier decreases by a larger amount with every hit, but there's a lower bound, so every move does at least 20-30% of its base damage no matter how low the multiplier gets
>new version: damage multiplier decreases by a smaller amount with every hit, but there's either no lower bound or else it's very small, like 5-10%
>>
>>36822986
>>36823035

No big EVOs or Grand Stampedes or Frosty Faustings announced yet but I imagine big tourneys are coming and will be shitposted about in the thread.
>>
>>36822986
The meter gain is a little different than SG. The amount given never changes, just the ratio. Every attack has a meter gain value that gets split 70/30, and then the ratio flips when the JD bar fills.
So if you did a combo with 10 moves that give 10 meter each, 100 meter will be distributed, but if it was all before JD max you'd get 70 and they'd get 30, and if it was all after JD max you'd get 30 and they'd get 70.

sets with other people are really just like 2-player-training mode where you get to practice your combos and how to defend against mixups but you don't even have to record them in advance
>>
>>36824488
Practicing by yourself is really just a 1 player set where you get to be as creative as you want and do cool shit you aren't good enough to do in a match, and you don't even have to talk to anyone in advance.
>>
>>36824526
I don't even want to pretend I don't know the joys of a good training session. But still the only way to get better at doing stuff in actual matches is to play actual matches. If you just leave the matchmaking search running in the background while in the training mode, and play a game now and again, you don't have to talk to anyone either and get to get better at all of the stuff that quote unquote actually matters. Like that weird conversion off that one hit that you wouldn't even know you need to practice. Maxing out the damage after a weird air to air counterhit, no combo video in the world prepares you for that one. I just kinda wish people would get over their ego and just play each other more. Treat actual play as just more training, really any match that's not like a tournament match is just an opportunity to improve where the result doesn't matter as much as what you learn on the way. The world would be a better place. We could have cured cancer ages ago. Think about it. Think of the wonderful future we could be living in if you would play more matches

Hoe does this shift the meta? Will people drop their combos more often and try to guess wakeup options to restart the damage scaling or is keeping combos and strings still as useful despite giving meter to your opponent?
>>
>>36830183
Safe damage is safe damage.
Thousand hits that deal 1 damage is still 1000 damage.
>>
>>36830183
Playstyles vary within the playerbase. From what I can tell, Paprika, Pom, and Arizona with magic are significantly more likely to go for shorter combos that end in HKD than they were prior to the patch. You can still get by playing max damage techchase SKD style if you prefer that but you will lose out on damage relative to the meter you give the opponent, especially if you're playing Arizona or Oleander.

I personally will end a combo with like a jab xx jab xx medium kind of starter as soon as I hit full juggle decay, ending the combo on the next best move that grants some semblance of oki. It just feels silly doing like 200 extra damage and in return your opponent gets a full bar of meter. If the starter was good it mostly seems worth it to go full out. But it really is a case by case call. If you can kill of course you can kill. If it leaves an opponent just shy of the dreaded two bars, even a big combo might be better off getting dropped early (and for example you combo into a reset which would then have potential for more damage too). Maybe it's just because I'm not that invested but the cool thing is neither call feels like a waste, there's always an argument to be made for either.

Someone else feels like TFH comunity is too exclusive? I don't know, I've started feeling this lately. You can't get any decent fights if you are not part of the Discord clique. Ive started feeling this since like a year ago, part of why I don't play that much anymore. Everyone just arrange their fights in Discord and the only ones left are a bunch of day one newbies, not complaining about the last ones, but I wish I could get higher level fights without having to do everything through discord. Game feels a little bit circle jerk-ish from time to time.

I know what you mean but if you're persistent in the lobby you'll still get fights against pretty much everyone eventually.
That's kind of just how low playerbase fighting games work though sadly, at least this one has lobbies good enough to be a functional stand-in. Maybe when they finally add Ranked people will actually use it but I kind of don't expect it, ranked queues tend to be pretty barren in anime games, people usually like running sets instead.

I know he's historically awful at video games but fightan is the one genre I expected him to be decent at since he wanted to make a figthing game before Yandere Simulaator

if he plays fighting games as good as he codes, it's a wonder he managed to start the game.

>>

Yeah I agree with you. It's either you have to personally socialize with the person to get good matches or you have to constantly kick their ass for them to remember you. The problem with the last one is that you have to be worthy of their time and if you lose 2/3 they'll will most likely never play you again.

>>36833860
What in particular are you complaining about? That strong people can't be assed to just do quick matches on repeat in the hopes of running into someone who's not a newbie? That there's a lack of strong players in general? Go play any given game where there's people making a living playing and you'll never run out of strong players who are more than a quick match search away. But this is how it is for literally any other game that's not, like, SFV or Tekken. Just become part of the Discord clique anon you don't have to be diego umeharez to get good matches, seriously.

I honestly don't get the issue. I mean there is no "one" discord, where if you don't abide by unwritten social contracts you're exiled. The scene is tiny and with strong players there are individual people on individual channels (and you can of course just contact them without actually joining those channels but just message people in person). I mean I have to guess you have actual people on top of your head, when you talk about not getting to play people? Have you actually tried just hitting them up? I don't think this elitism of people not wanting to play others because they feel like they're wasting their time and not getting a challenge is actually a thing, or rather if it is, it's a thing that's happening on a per-person basis - and it's NOT just exclusive to small indie games with a low player count but actually a thing in all fighting games when I think about it. I've been sent away by pro players (in "actual" games, at offline events). It sucks. But then it's like, you can not really blame anyone either, you have limited time at any given tournament and of course you'd rather spend it playing fellows of similar skill. Similarly I've ditched people who were honestly too weak to be fun for me to play against - it's not something I do, like, in GENERAL or anything. I'll go 100-0 another day if I've got the time and softdrinks for it, if someone were to ask for that. But of course it's not like I go out *looking* for that either. Of course I instinctively hit up people whom I know to be on my level. That's not circlejerking, that's normal.

Tl;Dr: if you don't get to play people it's not because the scene is elitist but because you are anti-social to a fault. also I will not for a second pretend your bait didn't rile me up so good job on those 4 words you wrote

If you want an alternative for matchmaking to discord there's an alternate community of TFH players, it's called /tfhg/. If you're against matchmaking in discord, why not try getting games here? I feel like almost no one does this.
