Isn't colony drop a really inefficient weapon? You drop one of 7 colonies just to destroy one city. I think earth easily wins this exchange.

The colony drop was supposed to hit Jaburo, the Earth Federation HQ and Zeon thought that would instantly make win the war.

Dropping colonies/bases is literally one of the most effective ways of killing the Earth in Gundam. And not just in UC.

Not OP but I remember seeing every Gundm entry up until Age aired, they never gave an indicator on how many colonies exist, just seven sides. It wasn't until many years later and after I browsed /m/ did it occur to me there was more than seven space colonies and this was well after Unicorn ended. Sometimes you need to tell the audience.

How would a colony drop kill half oof mankind? Wasn't the biggest part of mankind living in space by that time?
>>
>>22131714
Anon, the last time one happened in real-life it caused a planetwide extinction.
>>
>>22132072
From what we see in 0079 life on Earth is doing just fine.

Despite one third of the colony fell in Pacific Ocean likely causing mass tsunami in East Asia, Japan is still later mentioned as an existing country with Mirai's relatives living there. But in case the effect of colony drop was that destructive that it indeed caused billions dead then all Japan's major population centers to the Pacific would be obliterated.
>>
>>22131893
To be fair, the main impact site was was Australia. But the colony broke up into 3 pieces and hit Canada too as well as the Pacific ocean near Japan. Tsunamis, tectonic shifts and earthquakes, wide spread fires coupled with the amount of debris thrown into the atmosphere can have some pretty devastating effects.

Also, not most of humanity was in space... just the people who the Federation didn't want living on Earth anymore. Like poor people.

It's too late to delete the thread, Anon, so I'm going to explain it. The term "Side" refers to the CLUSTERS of colonies, not a single habitat.
They are graphically represented on maps as a single cylinder for simplicity's sake, but the Sides actually look like this.

This is Side 6, as it appears on War In The Pocket.

It's a challenge to animate the colonies, especially whole clusters of them. The sequence of Sweetwater in CCA (done with computer graphics) was a technical achievement.

The better question. Gundam takes place around about 2300-2500AD. How the fuck has humanity built 50-65 O'Neill 3's? That is something that should take a minimum of a millenium.

The construction takes place in space, which makes things go faster since weighlessness makes it much easier to move objects around. And frankly that's the least of the technological issues in Gundam, the computers they're using are vastly inferior to the shit that we have access to on our smartphones, let alone what the internet makes possible.

It killed a billion or two on Earth by completely fucking up the climate and food sources, but most of the deaths were in space. Zeon literally just showed up one day at a bunch of sides, declared war to no one listening in particular, and started firing on the colonies with the excuse that they were destroying federation garrisons. Multiples sides were very badly damaged and a couple were nearly wiped out.

in actuality a single colony drop would actually make Earth uninhabitable for ages. I donbt think it'd have nearly as much momentum as a big rock hurtling through space, but it'd still be rather fast. While Axis had been fitted with a shit ton of nuclear reactors and thrusters to really get that stone a rolling
I guess you could argue that the zeeks intentionally slowed down the entry and descent to make it more of a warning shot that softens up the Earthbound Feddies rather than outright making most life on Earth go extinct. That's probably why the Fed politicians were actually really keen on Haman dropping one on Europe as population control as it was a more controlled attack vs Char's intentional armageddon
>>
>>22133398
Elevens are just fucked about time. Remember the Martians in Aldnoah forgetting what chicken was in like thirty years?

I blame it on the hyper-acceleration of culture and/or tech during the Meiji Restoration and post-WWII collapse-and-recovery. That must have created a sense that society and technology can become unrecognizable in a single generation that you just don’t get in Western sci-fi.
>>

The reason why the 40 answer doesn't pop up more often is because it doesn't mesh well with population. For example, 6 sides x 40 colonies each is only 240 colonies. Side 7 is incomplete and barely started construction, consisting of a single colony in MSG and two colonies in Zeta. We'll be generous and bump up the total to 250 colonies anyway.

9 billion divided evenly among 250 colonies is 36 million per colony.

That said, most Sides use the open-type cylinder where half of the cylinder are window panels. Side 3 uses the closed-type cylinder which has no windows and mirror panels for sunlight, but can use all of the internal surface for living space. Only the closed type can hold anywhere near 36 million, and that could be considered very high capacity. Open type should be half that capacity.

https://www.dyarstraights.com/gundam-test/its-life-gm-but-not-as-we-know-it/
https://www.dyarstraights.com/gundam-test/how-the-other-half-lives/

As far as given population figures go, Side 3's population was originally mentioned in narration to be 150 million, but in later sources it has been retconned to be 1.3 billion. For individual colonies, the Mahal colony in MSG that was evacuated and repurposed for the solar ray colony laser held 6 million citizens. Zeta mentions that the death toll for the gassed colony known as 30 bunch is around 3 million. CCA showcased Londenion, which was described as an "old city" with 5 million residents.

In any case, 40 colonies per side seems too little for the stated population figures of each side if we do assume 9 billion people live in space. There are also the lunar cities, but it's my understanding that the biggest lunar city Von Braun was comparable in size to a colony city anyway. Besides Von Braun we know of Granada, but not much else. I think there's one smaller city mentioned in Gundam Sentinel and that's it, so the population of the moon is much less than any Side except for maybe Side 7.

Yeah I figured that it didn't add up, I just wanted to be kind of facetious when anon said that there was "never" an indicator on how many colonies there were. Especially since the thread started with someone being unaware that there was more than seven space colonies.

And yeah, your math would be just about right if there were only about 40 colonies per side. The episode that that I took the quote from (The clipshow first episode of ZZ) said in the beginning that the "first colony" was capable of housing up to 40 million people. I don't find it hard to believe whoever was responsible for writing the line simply extrapolated that line about the "first colony" to all other colonies, then divided nine billion, added a few extra and then called it a day.

Of course I would say to still keep in mind that, as far as I'm aware, the 9 billion figure refers to just anyone living off of Earth and not just the official side colony cylinders directly orbiting it + the moon. It would have to include forgotten colonies like Moon Moon (which was officially abandoned), rogue stations like the Garden of Thorns, roaming groups like Cima'a fleet, mining asteroids like Luna II, Fifth Luna, Axis, Palau, that asteroid that was being brought to Core 3 in ZZ, etc, dedicated residence block asteroids like Moussa, Mars with its surface colonies and Jupiter with it's fleet + colony cylinders.

Granted, there's no guarantee that all of those combined even have half population of even one of the sides, but a lot of little populations can still add up and would still affect the density of the main colonies since we're extrapolating from 9 billion.

Also, you forgot Amman on the moon. That's the lunar city that the Radish was built in.

>speedwatching
I'd argue this doesn't even count as speedwatching, speedhearing, or speedreading since Gundam never establishes this visually. This thread is just autists sperging about how OP is retarded because none of the 40 Gundam series show multiple colonies side by side or actually show a wide angle view of there being "so many" of them. Just like how they don't show Jupiter and such despite bringning it up every other series.
