Thinking about it, I'm surprised nobody recommends watching Rumbling Hearts and Akane Maniax first before Muv Luv. I recently watched the two and it made me appreciate Alternative's second half a lot more. It's a lot easier to stomach Muv Luv's wacky stuff when you're used to it from Akane Maniax and watching Rumbling Hearts first with its relationship drama and it helps set the tone for the whole series.
