Looking for an obscure mecha manga that was never released in America. The designsool similar to five star stories and L gaim but it's not them. It also had a radio drama, I found out about it here on 4 chan like 7 or 8 months ago and can't remember what its called. It was a 80s or 90s manga that never got an animation. Would love to find it again. Help?

Super Nova? Fool for the City?
Someone talked about some Gothicmade drama CD a while back, it might have been an adaptation of a radio drama, ikd

thats not it but this also looks cool, im gonna check this out. thanks.

Why didn't Five Star Stories ever get a full adaptation? As weird as 20th Century Boys never getting one either.

Nagano didn’t like the changes made for the ova, and refused permission for Sunrise to explore a second volume. One of the great /m/issed opportunities imo

Gun Driver would be nice

>ova
It was a movie and no sequel was ever planned. It was a one-and-done deal like 90% of the other manga adaptations at the time.
>Nagano didn’t like the changes
Nagano didn't have a say and wasn't even on the production staff, it was made entirely at Kadokawa's discretion. Hell Nagano's even been on record praising the movie.

I think there was something about him really wanting the soundtrack to be heavy-metal/prog rock?
Not sure about this fact.

It's always weird to see people talk about the "changes" when the movie is so similar to the first volume. There's like a couple of tiny changes to make some scene more impactful and that's it.

One can only dream of a world where more was adapted.

>I think there was something about him really wanting the soundtrack to be heavy-metal/prog rock?
Doubtful. He and his wife have made soundtracks for the manga and not a single one of them I have heard have been metal or rock.

It's more likely that Nagano simply considers FSS to be married to the comic book medium, the same way he sees Gothicmade as only a roadshow film

They're talking about the tone.
>>

They cut out the entire beginning and ending of the first volume thus removing all the context, how is that a "tiny change"?
>>
>obscure
aren't the more recent FSS been top sellers recently?

>They cut out the entire beginning and ending of the first volume thus removing all the context
See that's what I mean. I watched the movie first and reading things like that made me expect a lot more of story from the fisrt volume, but it's pretty much the same?
You actually see the first battle (which is neat but budget issue I guess?), and there's a bit more info at the end about the hair color stuff.
So yeah technicaly that's less info but you can still get the context.
And let's not forget that a whole bunch of context you get more easily in the books with the lore and data dump part, and good luck adapting that.

>I watched the movie first
There's your problem.
>You actually see the first battle
No you don't? All the movie shows is couple still shots of the Vatshu, which never fights anything, and is used as nothing more as a prop for a lazy exposition dump on what the giant robots and Fatima are. That entire prologue was necessary to establish what Amaterasu is and see how he's actively attempting to conquer the galaxy. In the movie you have no idea who or what Amaterasu even is and why he's important.
>there's a bit more info at the end about the hair color stuff.
Oh, and the small fact that it explicitly shows how Amaterasu was planning to conquer the entire galaxy which would have tied back to the beginning of the volume.
>And let's not forget that a whole bunch of context you get more easily in the books with the lore and data dump part, and good luck adapting that.
Literally none of that even existed at the time the movie was made.

It's obvious the movie was time and budget constrained and that's why we didn't get to see LED Mirage and Vatshu duking it out, or the Jagd Mirage at the end.

nah I was talking about the book there, sorry if I worded it wrong.
I actually have no idea about when the worldbuilding stuff was added so I'll give you that.
But it's true that I might have years of infos and wolrdbuilding in my mind by just browsing around even if not actively looking for it, making it easier to get some things than when it released.

I still think it works as a standalone even if indeed some hard facts may appear more mystical from lack of exposition, but I guess that's moving the goalpost.

i read a spanish edition of the first volume of this manga decades ago! i loved the dea of a mix between western and mechas

It's only obscure outside of Japan.

gothicmade i think
>>
>>21578145
>>21578083
Gothicmade was a movie seperate from FSS at first, then Nagano liked it so much that he's now retooled the FSS universe and Gothicmade took place within it.
>>
>>21560156
Gaia Gear? That's the only thing I can think of, maybe you were thinking about the novel and the illustrations in it? It did get a definitive radio drama however.

Gothicmade was always part of FSS, it literally features the predecessor of one of the main factions of FSS.

Might it be Rune Masquer?
Kishin Gensou Rune Masquer , 機神幻想ルーンマスカー , by Yutaka izubuchi , published by Tokuma Shoten in 1991.

Here are a few sample pages (the link to the “complete scans” doesn’t work)

A lot of /m/anga haven't arrived stateside. However, due to how infamously shonentard amerifags are, this is unlikely to change anytime soon.
