***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

And remember to report any shitposting and spam to keep the thread clean and civil.

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post images whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting images.

>Why are my pictures sideways?
4chan strips EXIF data from images when they're uploaded to the site from your phone, including the orientation display tag. To fix this, save your images separately, or use an app that will rotate and save the images for you.

==GROUPBUILD GROUPBUILD==

>Have a build that you never got to finish for a previous groupbuild? Only started building recently and sad you missed out on a theme from 4-5 years ago? Now's an opportunity to get that build done!
>Your build must conform to at least one of the previous 19 Groupbuild themes and the rules of that groupbuild, though you can mix together elements of other past groupbuilds (ie: a Melee Zaku or a mecha musume sniper)
>You must detail what theme(s) your build is going for when you submit your build.
>You can't submit a touched-up version of a previous groupbuild entry, but you can build something that fits alongside your past build (ie: a 2nd squad member for an entry to the GM groupbuild or a mid-season upgrade/powered up version of the same suit) so long as you showcase both the old and new builds in a few photos.
For information on the rules of past Groupbuilds, please refer to this pastebin: https://pastebin.com/xXqM1Tg0

All other standard Groupbuild rules apply (Must be a model kit, must have some WIP photos included in the email along with a short bio describing it).

START - 11/6/22
END - 2/28/23

Submit your entries to gunplaplamo@gmail.com , include at least 5 finished pics and any WIP pics you took while working on your entry, as well as a brief description of your build.

It's thicker. The Extra Thin was drying too fast for me to get reliable results out of it. I'm sure Extra Thin is fine for other types of work, but for the kind of seam welding I'm doing I'd say Mr.Cement is probably better.
Keep in mind that Tamiya Extra Thin (green) and Tamiya Cement (orange) are not the same thing and the latter is probably closer to what Mr.Cement is, though I haven't used it myself.

The whole point of extra thin cement is to let capillary action do the work in running down seam lines. You let the parts be a knife blade apart and dab the brush a bit along the seam, then squeeze shut.
>>
>>21456750
That's what I had been doing, but the results were extremely underwhelming no matter how much I applied and I wound up having to use CA glue as filler.
>>
>>21456756
Works for me, I dunno. CA glue is a lot better for seams in the longrun anyways, much quicker to work with. I mostly just use cement for plaplate work now.

How do you guys topcoat your metallics?
I've used gloss on shiny gold/silver parts, but I've never done metallic inner frames before, and am wondering whether I should use a satin or maybe even a matte coat so it doesn't clash too hard with matte outer armor
>>
>>21456782
I'm waiting for actual irl pics of the kit
>>
>>21456886
Metallics under matte will turn kind of dull. Satin I've never used because it's literally the same sheen as the plastic. So just go with gloss.

Or alternatively, don't even bother painting an inner frame, unless you're planning to display the inner frame.

>>
>>21456971
What "advanced techniques" are there in terms of painting, just weathering and stuff?
I'm still trying to figure out what's considered a full "layer" of paint, like if it's just one sweep with the airbrush, and how you deal with doing that across both sides of the part where there will inevitably be overflow

I hate the gloss effect because I think it's too much for metallics and glossiness ends up making it look very plasticky (this really only works if you're doing candy colours of metallics, so silver basecoat + clear colour), so I often go with semi-gloss/satin topcoat.

>>21456910

If it doesn't ooze out you're either starting with the pieces too far apart or not using enough cement. Always use thrice the amount of cement you originally intend to. Have it ooze out before you even squeeze the pieces together, take a sniff of the cement. Make sure the cement is flowing through every little angle, lick the brush. Swab the brush above the cracks instead of keeping it in one place like you're panel lining, drink the cement. Chug the cement, buy more bottles of cement

How often does Bandai reprint or HLJ restock non-Gunpla kits? I cam across this Mazinkaiser model kit:

https://www.hlj.com/1-144-scale-hg-mazinkaiser-infinitism-bans58210

Came out in 2019, no idea if it's even been reprinted since. Saw it was in stock on a few other sites, but they either don't ship to my country or people say to stay away from them, like MyKombini.

It has significantly more cutting power on raised bits like nubs, but does very little to the part itself given how the cutting geometry works. Essentially, since the cutting bits are inset rather than extruded like in sand paper: when run along a largely flat surface: only raised bits will get caught. Mostly it just polishes the flat bits a little if anything.
>>
>>21457592
just be careful around edges with it, it's easy to sand down the part itself
also it generally doesn't work well on curved parts
>>

So they're useless then.
>>
>>21457602
most nubs are on straight surfaces and slight curves aren't going to be an issue either. it's really just kits with mostly rounded parts and curved silhouette that you're really better off with sandpaper or sponges. A metal file isn't going to work any better on them. Probably worse.

schwer means heavy so its like FIGHTER HEAVY in badly translated german which explains its more bulky appearance.
but imo that kinda misses the point, doesn it? the kämpfer was meant to be a glass cannon that sacrifices armor to be faster and more flexible.

either way I'm ordering the regular MG Kämpfer first. is it a good kit? I'm asking because its an old one.

>>
>>21457691
it's not that weird of an idea actually, there is some precedence for it
the Titania is a Kampfer frame with custom armor on top of it and is a dedicated high performance commander use machine. Whereas Kampfer is a hit-and-run suit where the run part is optional and the MS's design doesn't try very hard to protect the pilot. Reworking it into a heavier machine can be a good way to give it some more staying power while still benefiting from the suit's mobility

I heard that the faux gold material for the MGEX Strike Freedom is more brittle than the usual plastic Bandai uses for their models.
Is there any truth to this?
>>
>>21458752
I'll tell you when I get my MGEX.
>>
>>21458752
just fake news, that one pic of some guy's MGEX Strike Freedom snapping at the waist joint was just because he was a hamheaded idiot using gorilla strength to test the limits
>>
>>21458752
partially true.
a lot of retards go on about "gold plastic syndrome" which used to be an issue with gold kits due to the plastic not being UV stable and getting damaged over time.
however this isn't an issue with modern gold kits (no matter how much hamhands try to blame it on it). what is true, is that the metallic flake, by nature acts almost like a small void in the plastic, making metallic plastic around 90% of the strength of normal plastic. it's honestly fine.

You actually don't wanna use this as panel liner since it pools up and turns matte when dry. You're supposed to dab it on spots that you want to look rusty or like a bunch of red sand got trapped in it

Ooh thanks for that, so are there any alternatives for a red panel line?

The RG GGG I'm working on has stealthgao with a ton of panel details and I was thinking of using red as an accent colour.

I've bought AB 1, 2 and 4 clones before.
The 4s are terrible, they don't have any locking mechanisms and just rely on the screw holding everyrhing together.
The 1s were were fine, except the base plates were warped on all 3 that I got, so they wouldn't lay flat on the shelf without some sanding or heating up and warping them back.
The 2s were perfectly usable and so far have held everything I put on them (which is all HGs to be fair), I don't really have any complaints.

Newfag here, just recieved my first gunpla in the mail. I'd like to paint the entire kit (coming from a TT wargaming background, so painting is nothing new for me), however I'm unfamiliar with how gunpla assembly works in regards to painting/spray/basing prep while retaining maximum posability.

Is it recommended to clip out, prep, spray and then paint up each individual piece of the model before assembly, or is it better to assemble the entire model, then spray and paint it in one go? Or something inbetween?
>>
>>21459413
assemble, to see which part is which and what colour you want it(not necessary).
disassemble and then paint. Just mask the joints and pegs if youre afraid of losing posability

I generally go for somewhere in between, I build the whole thing first to get and idea of what color I want each part to be and what seam lines I need to fix etc. then break it down to paint. sometimes I end up with singe pieces and sometimes small assemblies
>>
>>21459437
I've never done panel lining with metallics, but I don't think it would turn out well due to how they work, the metallic flakes would also get very diluted if you did that. Maybe try fluorescent yellow or something?

>broken fingers
Literal hamhand wasn't paying attention to where pressure was being applied. Not a problem since the kit comes with fixed pose ones.
>broken runner
Nothing glue and paint can't fix. Another literal non-issue.
>broken pegs
Another case of hamhands. Pegs don't break like that without stressing first. What likely happened was that the fit was too tight and the moron decided to bend the pieces in a way they didn't like.
I've only ever had a peg snap on me once without warning and that is because the thing was fucking hollow.

>>21458724
I want to challenge this assertion.
I have a Hazel II kit I'm working on right now that was originally released in September of 2006, but if the decade stamp works the way you claim that would mean that this kit would have been made in June of 2002.
You could argue that the Hazel II is just a parts variant of the Hazel Custom, but that kit came out in September of 2005.
>>
>>21459560
Yeah. The piece was designed that way on purpose for some reason. Fucking baffling considering the kit is heavy enough to come with its own stand.

Very recent finally found an Lfrith in the wild and put it together real quick, got an Aerial coming too. The Lfrith felt really simple? But this was also after a few MGs and an RG.
>>
>>21459662
most HG kits without a timeline tacked on to the name (unlike HGUC, HGFC, HGAC etc) tend to be a bit simplified. There are some exceptions, but they are usually designed to be a bit cheaper to drive sales during an airing series.
>>
>>21459662
HGs ARE very simple compared to MGs and RGs.
>>
>>21459662
Of course; it's a high grade.
>>
>>21459662
witch kits in particular seem to focus more on simplicity and decent quality rather than intricacy, much more so than HGUC
>>
>>21459681
Okay, was going to say it was simple even by HG standards. The waist was just four pieces want the had was five not tiny pieces.
>>
>>21459699
*While the head was five not tiny pieces. Phone autocorrections suck.
>>
>>21459625
Pic related. I'd show you the piece in question but my phone is refusing to download images from there ATM. The problem lies in how the hip is assembled. The hollow joint in the waist slides into a swing with a male joint on the other end that can also swing.
So all that when combined with Koto tolerances led to it shearing as soon as I tried to move it.

>>
>>21459754
like every other ibo suit, the FM is better than the HG.
Buy it and mourn that Kimaris Vidar is probably never getting a 1/100
>>
>>21459754
It's pretty good for a relatively old non-grade, definitely better than the HG.
The fact that all the spare blades are separate and usable pieces and that the pistols are also usable and not just molded into the front skirt automatically makes me like it more even though I've never actually taken advantage of either gimmick.
>>
>>21459754
fm has better hand options, more true to the original art, and less seams. But you have to deal with the FMs faggy cclips for the side skirts if you're test fitting, and lack of collar raise or swing out will make it less dynamic than the hg in certain poses. Still, its quite nice as a cope kit while waiting for inevitable mg

sazabi's hands work thanks to their size more than anything. For anything smaller than above-average-size MGs I STRONGLY prefer static pose hands. Just give us the whole lineup of close fists/holding hands for each weapon/open palms for both sides and I'm happy. It's not exactly a lot of plastic and frankly it should be the standard for every kit no matter the line. Articulated hands can come as a bonus for rgs and mgs.
>>
>>21460151
>static pose hands
They need to be reworked to be stronger and hold more weight. Don't know about you, but for me half of them the gun and fingers will pop out before I can get the wrist into the arm. It just ends up as frustration.

>>
>>21460219
I haven't seen a decal set for it yet. The stickers for that kit are pretty big so you can hide them a little. Trim the decals with a really sharp cutter to get rid of as much clear area beyond the decal itself as you can before applying them. Anything going over a sharp bend or around an edge, use a straight edge and slice it at that bend after sticking it on and before top coating or it may try to lift even under a top coat.

If you're worried about putting them on a bit crooked, spray the part with water and small amount of soap so you can slide the decal around, then roll a q-tip around to squeeze the water out from under the sticker.
>>
>>21460267
There is no clear around the EG American stickers. The design sits on a white sticker cut in the same shape as the shoulder.

that really isn't too hot of a The O design
the chest shape is so boring and awkward
I have no clue what's going on with the top of the shoulders
head and legs are neat
no feet thrusters and the middle skirt thrusts being way too flush with the rest of the skirt makes it so dull. No clue why the skirt was flattened so much while the shoulders got a load of extra detail and size

If Bandai wanted repercussions for The O they'd have to go out and ice all the memelords who voted for it, internal did nothing wrong on it.
>>
>>21460856
>internal did nothing wrong on it.
It was mocked on release because it was a fairly low effort model for the time, and obviously a design they'd worked out years beforehand. Not having 4 beam sabre blades was honestly a slap in the face, nevermind the dated engineering past that.
>>
>>21460858
That's because The O is a fucking brick of cheese in its design. Who could have guessed a mobile suit that chunky might have articulation problems?
>>
>>21460859
I didn't say anything about articulation.
>>
>>21460863
It's implied with terms like low effort and dated engineering.
>>
>>21460864
In your brain I guess, but there's also things like parts separation and the design of construction/seam lines etc. It could be a bit better on articulation, too, but it isn't really what I'm thinking of at all.

For the anon who was curious about the snapped peg that was hollow. Here are the parts in question.
Pegs in questions are on the top towards the right and the swinging joint along with the part that adds the double swing to the left. Not sure why Kotobukiya thought it would be okay to have a part that can go under so much stress be so fragile.
>>
>>21460877
Would a Efreet Custom cancel that again?

>>21460883
Guys, I made it out.
The ninjas are after me. I finally got it. The truth. Bandai did not stopped producing The O. It is still being worked on. I saw the plans. The O will get a MG Ver.Ka and a RG soon enough.
Even so, some internal forces are trying to shut it down. Let it be known that there are forces beyond Plamo hold this.
I saw a shrine, made out plaplate and glue with some sort of red liquid and a lot of used exacto blades #11 covered on the liquid.
This only points out to one culprit, and that is P–

Heavy armour but with huge mobility and a simple but effective armament list is rad, that's all there is to it. It's a unique villain design with a good style. Kondo's cool. I probably like the Pallas Athene and Titania more as Scirocco designs go, but it's still really cool.

How fucked am I if I just don't bother topcoating over waterslides?
I'm a snapshitter, but I enjoy panel lining and want to get into decaling, but I don't like having to topcoat shit. Assuming I don't fondle the kits like action figures: I assume the decals will stay on just fine with some mark setter?
>>
>>21461115
they'll stay on but obviously be prone to any damage from touching it etc.
