>can't pilot robots
Don't care.

99% of JRPGs have them. Don't care.
>muh vaguely android waifus
Don't care. In fact I hate it when generic anime women are called robots, but still don't look the part.

None of this is even tangentially /m/. It may look less shit than 2, but it's not a proper xeno game without mechs for me to use in battle REGULARLY.

Getting ahead of yourself there, let's start with a version of X that is actually completed and not an abortive attempt at an offline live service game canceled before its first content update before we consider sequels.

I don't care about your feelings on X underdelivering, read the market and understand that "Product 1 but it's actually v1.000000001 now and you buy it separately even if you bought v1 and can prove it" will sell worse than "Product 2 with everything v1 should've been with but even more"
Also nothing (but greed lol) prevents selling revision and sequel both as a single product

Every Takahashi story inevitably mutates into a Xenogears Project Noah storyline, all Blade changed was making the episodes more standalone in nature as well as having each game anchored around some central gameplay gimmick that doubles as a lorebuilding aspect of the game setting.

But make no mistake, he's serializing Noah again, and we're supposed to be at Episode 6 with Xb3.

Xenogear's gameplay isn't bad it's just painfully simple and easy for most of the game. I can understand not liking the direction Blade's combat takes the series since it's not turn-based but it's certainly more interesting than Gear's combat which is just mash the same death blow over and over to win. Saga did gear's battle system better in my opinion (but I've only played Saga 1)
>>
>>20943941
2 takes it in a different direction where you can stock turns and then unleash them all at once
it's got some interesting ideas going for it but overall everything's too slow since you need to stock up a lot to deal massive damage
3 is way simpler and more streamlined than 1 and 2 where it's basically just a basic turn-based system except with the addition of a break bar that stuns enemies and you can use extra turns at will, but it arguably has the best mech combat of the whole franchise
You should check them out and see if you like it

Lots of problems
>huge lack of polish, performance eats shit and the game has memory leaks
>no collectopedia or affinity chart which add a lot to the world (even though you can tell things change by doing quests or talking to NPCs, they just needed to implement the interface)
>UX is one of the worst i've ever seen in a game, you need to menu constantly due to field skills and merc missions but the menus are slow and cumbersome
>blade bonding is gay and stupid, gating content behind luck is a ridiculous decision
>tutorials are dogshit
>final stretch is the shortest part of the game, the Wortld Tree and definitely Morytha could have been bigger
with all that said it's undoubtedly my favorite of the three, I liked the story, I liked the characters, the world design is great, loved the combat once it clicked and it's chock-full of content, especially if you get the expansion pass and do the Land of Challenge

Amazing locales, great music and cool designs but the gameplay definitely needed more polish.
Also the pacing in the last two chapters is kind of whack, no reason to break for side quests while climbing the world tree. I like the game but it definitely needed more dev time
>>
>>20947810
I'm at the point where I feel that part of the Xeno brand is that the gameplay has to have a rough unrefined quality to it, especially the Xenoblade games where the game system is the staging ground for story issues as well.

Like, the pulling at teeth nature of the gacha loop in 2? Thanks to how jank all of that is, it stays in your face long enough that the story can turn around and point out that there's some truly supremely fucked up stuff surrounding how Blades have been coopted as servant tools and that rolling for Rare Blades is the least of your concerns in a religiously promulgated system that would ensure an ecological collapse of Alrest that goes against everything the creator entity hoped to atone for.
>>
>>20947810
>Amazing locales
lol, they are nothing but self-contianed set pieces with hardly anywhere to go, and getting worse the more you play
>I like the game but it definitely needed more dev time

But it's also meant to be shown by the story that the main cast don't consider Blades to be disposable?

And yet throwing out Common Blades (unless they've got rare skills) is the common tactic since you don't have infinite inventory. A bit of ludonarrative dissonance imo.

>>20948299
The commons feed into your Blade As Tool mindset as they are best suited for skill checks and are these stock mass production looking guys that are hard to develop an attachment to unless they bail you out of a shitty skill check. The Rares twist it around into Blade As Person with their individual quests and unique affinity progression quirks.
You get the opportunity to internalize how both mentalities can manifest thanks to how they're distinguished from each other.
>>
>>20948330
As concept for a gacha system tying into the story, that is a pretty genius way of doing it.
But the story did not, nor really could, make that thematic connection less buried underneath the jank of the gacha and the only Blades being really featured in the story be Rare Blades.
>>
>>20948295
>navigate to art thru hotbar
>press button
>use art
how difficult is that?

Difference is quite minor. With assigning skills to face buttons, you shorten time to activate skills, but I personally find it annoying to having all these shortcuts to customize over and over whenever I want to change skills.
It was way easier for me to have them all on hotbar. It's not like game is that action packed that extra second matters while you navigate.

I think there was tidbit about them being "manifestation of humanity ideas" or something, so you can say that rare blades are somehow represent certain idea.
Dunno about genius tie in, overall story in 2 is boredom which you get everything explained to you on silver plate, resulting in actual reveal of how it all badly written.
Honestly all gacha and blade idea seems to be made from necessety of "we don't have any proper character artist and we have to outsource 3D modeling, let's try to use this in our favour via using outsource, and we'll come up with some story bullshit to cover it up"
>>
>>20949321
The Rares are Blades that have developed a personality over numerous resonance cycles, as they make their way towards the late stage portion of their life cycle as Titans.

Common Blades are really just Blades that are repeatedly reset so that they cannot develop past their blank slate form. I don't recall off top of head how intentional it all is, but certainly by Amalthus' time the means by which Indol regulates Cores is essentially imposing a slow death spiral upon Alrest.
>>
>>20948820
>Difference is quite minor.
Makes a lot of difference in real time because you need to manage a cursor, it means you're not paying attention to the action.
In fact, this was compounded in XBX because going into Overdrive adds so much motion blur to the screen that you're better off just focusing on your rotation and not giving a shit about what's happening because you can't tell what's going on anyway.
There's a reason why actions in RTS games can be assigned to keyboard buttons, or why MMOs don't use hotbars, and the only reason the hotbar is a thing at all is because the first game had to accomodate for people using the Wiimote.
>>
>>20949277

I just beat Saga 1, should I play 2 or skip straight to 3?

It's real time, but it's not an action game.
Yes, you indeed can feel that moving cursor to choose art is too slow.. in sub 1% of battles, usually either challenge or post game related.
That's way too few. And usually just rearranging arts on hotbar is sufficent fix to beat hidden tyrants, challenges or some other post game content.
For majority of the 1 and X, battles were paced in a way you never had a problem with hotbar. At least I never had. So that's why I take hotbar over hotkey approach cause it's more suitable for my playstyle in 99% battles.
>In fact, this was compounded in XBX because going into Overdrive adds so much motion blur to the screen that you're better off just focusing on your rotation and not giving a shit about what's happening because you can't tell what's going on anyway.
This is probably due to difference of playstyle which I probably didn't experience despite 100% the game. X gives you options how you to like to battle with enemies, you can either go crazy overdrive setup I've seen people pull off online and do that art rotation. Or you can prepare, especially if you use mechs.
I'm the latter.
Instead of ever learning good on foot setup, I just tinkered with mechs and superweapons so I could either one shot or defeat enemies very easily. For on foot, there were some problems, but hiring other people avatars was helpful actually.
>There's a reason why actions in RTS games can be assigned to keyboard buttons, or why MMOs don't use hotbars, and the only reason the hotbar is a thing at all is because the first game had to accomodate for people using the Wiimote.
but this is neither RTS, nor MMO. Sure, if it was because of wiimote, doesn't really change that I prefer that way over what was in 2.
Granted maybe problem with 2 also was that it has most disgusting UI design in console game I've ever played (outside battle one), so that didn't help.

2's gameplay isn't so hot. The main reason to play is the story and lore. But I would still recommend you try it - if you hate the gameplay you can just watch all the cutscenes on the net.

You could say the same about more """open world""" jrpgs, but the eye candy makes up for it imo.

I just started it and the gameplay seems weird coming from 1 but it's also much faster than 1's, as long as the battles don't become slogs like some of 1's fights I'll probably be able to tolerate it.

But damn these redesigns are awful, all of the characters look uncanny valley as fuck, they should've just sticked with the Tanaka style.

Xenoblade 1 and especially X had plenty of places to visit.
1 had way bigger and better designed locations, each tied up to the other giving you some sense of adventure thru weird world.
X was actually open world with only invisible walls of entire map perimeter. I played hundreds of hours and still was finding new places at times.
2 is self-contained locations wise and design wise. You get one theme per one location which never goes anywhere. At best you can see other titan from afar and only thanks to story.
They are also very small and cramped as fuck, first few while still fill somewhat okayish, sure, but later you go it's basically becomes corridor with maybe one little spare path to go thru. And if you get big location it's usually boring as fuck with like one two place of interest.

Yeah... through looking more realistic and less anime, it also has less personality. But in 2004-5, waiting patiently for this to be released, I kind of thought the graphics were an improvement. For instance chaos here I prefer to his way too cutesy model from XS1 with the 3 gigantic cowlicks and huge puppy eyes. The graphical upgrade probably wasn't needed in the end, but at the time, it seemed like a good idea I guess.

>yet another garbage dub the plebs will sing praises of
>Character name changes AGAIN
At least I've gotten much better at Japanese in the intermittent years since XB2. JP Noah sounds calm and collected, EN Noah just sounds bored.

On the up side, the battle system seems to be a melding of 2's and X's with a sprinkling of influence from the classic FF job system, which I'm all for. Though, I'm not seeing how the Ouroboros forms are anything more than a free damage button. It almost feels like a reskinned Overdrive from X, plus you lose a party member to trigger it

dub is fucking horrible, but dual audio is there so let idiots suffer
I hope battle system will get time to shine, in 2 it was really bad at allowing that, torna fixed that a bit

I really don't understand Nintendo's modus operandi when it comes to localising names in their JRPGs. Part of it consistently comes from names seemingly being "too Japanese", but they've retained every Japanese-esque name for 3's main characters. And yet a number of the heroes have had their names changed, despite it. It was a similar case with 2 and its rare Blades as well.

Then there's the absolutely baffling ones like back in 2, some non-Japanese names were changed anyway (i.e. Meleph -> Morag). It all just makes for a real headache if one wants to play in dual audio, but has to constantly put up with the irritable differences between text and audio
>>
>>20953768
Well, I'm still mad about skells in X. So I don't understand either.
Probably just whoever localizes got an upperhand somewhere due bullshit reasons and no one bothers to argue against.
>>
>>20953768
You think Xeno's bad at that, you should see Dragon Quest
>>
>>20954039
Silver lining is that I got sick of how localisation practices have been trending and seriously picked up my Japanese studies again.
>>
>>20953742
Given the HP bar seems to disappear when you activate Ouroboros, I'd wager you take no damage while using it too, so it's a nice emergency button

In terms of design maybe but all of the party members seem to have a lot of personality.
>>
>>20961821
yea, I meant design wise. Personality, we'll see.
Maybe they won't be background characters now, like every party member after joining the party in 2.
