How should mecha co-piloting work??What role would each person in the cockpit have? And why don't more mecha series do that? I feel like having two people cooperate to control the same machine adds potential for a lot of interesting scenarios as well as designs.I finished Last Exile recently and that show revolved around machines that required a pilot and navigator. It did a really good job not just at conveying those roles, but also using them to show how characters relate to one another and it got me thinking about mecha series that do that.Build Fighters S1 had a cool idea with Reiji being the fighter and Sei running diagnostics, but outside of that the few others I can think of they don't really hit the nail.Eureka Seven had Renton and Eureka in the Nirvash and another LFO had 2 pilots, but you never really get an idea of what the purpose of that is and often times it just came off as having an extra person in the cockpit doing nothing.Ditf has a version of it too, but there's not any logic tied to it, the copiloting is primarily used to portray emotions and character relationships.
>>20914590WTF! Why that Gundam do Moonlight Butterfly? That not Turn A or Turn X!
>>20914590Pacific Rim had some technobabble about the "neural load" or something of the gigantic mecha mocap, and thus needed to have two people operating in concert to handle the strain. It was a neat thematic point to have characters have to literally be on the same wavelength to work together, but it wasn't super elaborated on in the original movie and even less in any of the side material from what I recall.
>>20914590Nirvash needed the second person for the Amita drive the 606 was just a modified single seat they used for taking photos or for a passenger. Nirvash is one of the oddest setups as Eureka and Renton(later on) were two out of the six best pilots in the show and one just sat there. With Nirvash being somewhat there its like have two silent people in the cockpit.Shows with AI have the AI take the role of a lot of what a second person could do. Favorite would b G Gundam but with the horse in the cockpit. Next would be variable fighter having an onboard idol to sing at the enemy. I'd like to see mechs having a person dedicated to flyting with the enemy. If its not a biped they could try to base it off a tank or aircraft.
If FSS, the fatima is quite a portable, bioengineered computer that serves as the interpreter between the headdliner's control inputs and the MH's synthetic muscles. They don't HAVE to have a body to do their basic job.
Watch Getter Robo and the first couple episodes of MEGATONMEGATONMUSASHI MUSASHI
>>20914997One thing I found dumb about why Stacker was dying was "lol radiation", when they could have just had him be dying from the massive damage caused by piloting a Jaeger solo.
>>20916619Radiation damages the body and can reduce lifespan, but leave a man mentally competent and fit to serve as a commander. Brain damage is more along the lines of impaired mental function and/or motor function, brain damage that is strong enough to kill a man usually immediately kills, not after 20 years.
>>20916659fair enough.
>>20914590>How should mecha co-piloting work??Zegapain did it in the most logical way: you have one person on piloting duty and the other is a general-purpose weapon systems manager and navigator.
One should be the top and the other should be the bottom.

>>20914590One pilot handling movement and the other handling weapons, like the /m/ag Mashymre story (https://archiveofourown.org/works/29797596).Alternatively, one (male) pilot doing everything and the other (girl) cheering him on, like Cham in Dunbine, Lilith in L-Gaim, or Hitomi in Escaflowne.

>>20916457So they could just be brains in jars?
>>20914590Make it like a 2 seater fighter jet, and have the rear seater just be a flight engineer/Weapons safety officer and/or backup pilot like on the F-15E Strike Eagle
>>20924350Some are. In FSS those are called etrimls.Compared to full body fatimas their performance at their job is more consistent; never terrible, but neither exemplary.
>>20927528basically this, have them carry out separate functions, like left brain-right brain, and be able to take over if the other guy gets incapacitated.
>>20914590Is this okay?
>>20938593Only the prototype was said to have a 2nd cockpit for the lower body, and it only gets used if they separate so there's no actual dual control of the MS itself.

>>20939033With their supersoldier stamina, how long are their nights of sex?
>>20914590No copilots. Just have 1 pilot. Having more than one always means one person gets more attention.
>>20916671Man, I loved Zegapain even with all the weird bits.
>>20939035Shorter than you'd think. Quantum brainwaves create a positive feedback loop that gets ultra intense. Still, they'll stop because they've got shit to do rather than they're tired.
>>20939043Does this mean extra long cuddling sessions or random moments they just sit together and bask in each other's quantum brainwaves?
>>2091459000-Raiser's gattai and copiloting scheme is the best. The copilot is useful but not forced like a megazord something
>>20939059>The copilot is usefulHe's not, as much as love 00 Saji is basically unnecessary as a copilot and both the Susanoo and Reborns fights prove it.
>>20939059Saji doesn't do so much. Tons of scenes Setsuna goes without him just fine. Aside from saving Louise, even the short sequence where the Star Winning had the Lightning as a backpack was more of a co-pilot.
>>20939059Wouldn't Lasse and Setsuna against Corner be a better example of co-piloting?>>20939070That's much more like above. Two separate things that can fight on their own deciding to pool resources and combine.
>>20939044Random cuddle sessions. They're always basking in eachother.
>>20917614Oh like in Daimidaler.
I like it when one of the pilots becomes the mecha, as in if the mecha is hurt, they get hurt while the pilot is basically the rat from Ratatouille.
>>20914590i would imagine the same way it works in jets. the pilot is busy flying/maneuvering and the RIO handles radar, weapon systems, and targeting
>>20943200
>>20917614>one (male) pilot doing everything and the other (girl) cheering him onDoes Gundam X count?Tiffa functions more like a living sensor system than a cheerleader, but essentially is just giving warnings/advice/encouragement most of the time.I guess she's also like a key for the Satellite Cannon, but that's only if the moon is out anyways.
>>20939044Probably means shared pleasure -> faster but also more satisfying finish -> long cuddle session with shared bonding hormone reactions intensifying in one another
