It's presumably a Renewal type, unless Bandai spent the delays doing something special with it.
It's been hella delayed by my understanding. It's more important for symbolic reasons, being I think the first DX Valk to officially be sold stateside, thanks to the last batch of negotiations with HG finally chipping away at their death grip on anything even remotely connected to Robotech.

No, it's just that nobody cares. After 7 years of absolutely nothing, Harmony Gold is clearly the only one that gives a shit about the movie being made while Sony just keeps waving them off. This is despite the fact that HG themselves keep showing back up at the studio to try and convince them that Robotech is somehow a viable product to make a movie on. Even andy Muschietti went on record after he quietly made his way out the door as the movie's proposed director and said that Robotech doesn't have enough popularity for Sony to spend large quantities of money on a project.

For fuck's sake, HG was so sure that Andy and Fukes were so tied to the project that they invited them to their building, got snapshots with everyone, and even gave them free stuff!

Why do you think Sony went from him to some dude whose only main credit is directing a Hawkeye episode?

Of course Big West isn't going to oppose a movie that'll never happen.
>>
>>20896446
>No, it's just that nobody cares.
What Sony thinks is irrelevant. I'm talking about the public info that made waves spring last year. As someone who didn't dial into Macross news every week let alone monthly it sure hard as fuck to miss. Apparently everyone stopped reading once they got "yay we can buy toys now"
>>
>>20896581

Yes, that's the point I'm trying to make. Because Sony doesn't give two clear fucks about the movie, and the fact that anyone can just google the news on just how far in development hell this whole thing really is, everyone can't help but snicker at any mention of a live-action Robotech movie.

Hell, look at the official Robotech facebook feed whenever info of the movie is dropped. Because they've been lead so many times around the bend on this whole scenario, not even Robotech fans can bring themselves to care. They really just want HG to shut up until an official green light is made on production or until a trailer drops.

So let me reiterate:

NOBODY. CARES. Not Sony, Not RT fans, not anime fans, not even average movie goers. I really don't see how you're hung up on this...

No. you're the one who keeps bringing up that Sony shit. I've said multiple times that the existence of their stupid movie came out in the press release. If anyone with two brain cells could fucking read it would have stopped being a surprise.
>>
>>20883423
I dunno, they just don't bother. They liked Robotech. They watched Robotech as kids. They have some merch and shit, the books and the DVD or VHS. They kind of know Macross exists but never bothered to investigate further because they didn't care.
>>
>>20896663
I think you're misunderstanding. People don't care and think that statement is irrelevant because the Robotech movie is 100% never going to fucking happen. Not because they think the clause is directly irrelevant.

That shit is absolutely never going to grace a screen anywhere.

I honestly I think that Sony is just after HG's license for Macross. The reason I think this is because Sony now owns both Funimation and Crunchyroll and they likely do want more exclusive shows for it. They're retellings of the TV series but not straight adaptations, rather they have a revised and somewhat different plotline that is designed to fit a movie. Unlike a standard compilation movie, it isn't just the TV version condensed into a smaller format, it sorta goes out of its way to tell a somewhat different yet similar story, with mostly new footage. You could watch both just to see the differences, and I'm sure there's not much reason why you can't watch the movies first.

after all this time I still think the VF-19 is the best valk ever designed
and that DX release is also the best one bandai ever released, it is packed with goodies and extras, the only negative point are the tail stabilizers that fall off by merely looking at them
strang how the DX YF-19 Advance does not have the same problem

anyways, how much you paid for this? not only it is very rare, it goes for 40k yen at least

It's also an absolute bastard to transform and that's what's pissing me off about it so much, on top of the fucked over stabilizers. Absolute troll figure, never pay as much as I did on it.

>>
>>20892630
Delta was supposed to be only 13 episodes that's why it drags towards the end
>>
>>20917590
The VF-1 fleet is absolutely my favorite so far. Simple enough that you don't rage at the transformation process, but engineered well enough that you don't feel like you've got an underwhelming toy compared to the more complex and technically impressive designs. They're built like brick shithouses, absolutely recommend keeping an eye out for any possible reissues or new color releases so you don't have to pay premium scalper price (TV Kakizaki 1A and the Max/Miria 1Js +/- that baby pod from that one episode are conspicuous omissions, along with Movie Max)

Though, hunting down accessory kits at an agreeable price is kinda not great, but that's part of the territory. Also, quality control is still a gamble at times with the DX line, so it's up to you if you want to aim for new in box or trust a former owner to disclose any and all QC issues.

Still, if you've got money to torch, I could think of worse things to get into, and honestly the 25 Worldwide is probably the best entry point DX option for Macross at this moment due to the combination of availability and price, so long as you're aware of how ragdoll-ish the underlying Renewal Messiah design is.
>>

>>
>>20918665
It's not without precedent, especially with the Messiah-A being a thing.
I don't know if my wallet can tolerate it, though, you gotta buy brownies in bulk after all. In the meantime, we do have the D, which moonlighted as a grunt in at least one episode of the show.

tbdesu it's always been a hell of a late fee on Macross
there was a stretch through the late 90s and 00s where there were a bunch in print but otherwise it's been crazy, like when I got into Macross mid-90s it was the _cheaper_ option to get a first wave Jetfire than it was to get a legit Takatoku Super Valk
>>

It's out of print, the supply is slim, they were up until recently really only marketed to Japanese mainlanders because of rights fuckery... and because some people are fucking insane and are willing to pay high prices for this shit (like me).

Except I never said, and I never hoped, that Sony would make a movie of Macross either. My whole point (why is this so hard to follow?) is that Sony has no real interest in making a Robotech movie. Even if they wanted to somehow turn the proposed Robotech movie into a Macross project, they can't, because Harmony Gold and Tatsunoko only have merchandising rights to Macross designs - This has never changed even after the 'agreement' with Big West.

Most of all, why would anyone want Sony to make a movie on either in the first place? Their Hollywood division is one of the most incompetent forms of feature film production in the US and have shown time again that they can't kick off a hit franchise of their own even when they're hitchhiking from another studio (their Marvel movies). Actually, this unsettling marriage between them and Marmony Gold is a match made in heaven.

>Why was Delta so much worse than Frontier?

They forgot how to tell a story. Seriously, go back and watch the end of Delta and realize that the story is literally not resolved by the finale. The war is still going, its only this one specific coup attempt by Roid that has been dealt with.
In the second half of delta, basically every plotline just goes nowhere and takes 3 times as long as it should to get there. They had no idea what they were doing, so nothing works and there is no payoff for anything.

Went to go see it with my sister. Wish they'd turned up the volume more for the songs. Middle part of the movie is still weak. Sheryl is great. Ranka is way too young and should be more of a sister than a love interest. Also Alto should have been part of SMS to begin with. Really forget the school stuff. Make him, mikhail, and luca all adults.

Throw in a third fight scene instead of Ranka love story.

Don't know about you but my favorite part of SDF is probably the episodes where they're stuck on the Zentraedi battleship, flimsy disguise and all.
Which of the sequels should I watch for more of that adventurous energy?
So far I've seen:
>Zero
S'good, just a solid little prequel story and testbed for Frontier's 3DCG. Supposedly the Birdman stuff also came back for that show but I don't remember how or in what capacity, either the movies glossed past it or I just forgot.

>Plus (OVA)
Nice cel animation and atmosphere. Characters were also alright but the story started to fall off towards the end.
It's got a few crumbs of commentary on the nature of man and technology but it mostly adds up to the two pilots having a sick dogfight and one of them suicide bombing the drone fighter, which made that stuff come off somewhat anticlimactic. Recall being fairly disappointed by the end and wishing I stuck with the AMVs and fight clips.
Then again I watched the dub, which I hear mistranslated one of the key scenes.
As for the "idol" plot I don't remember much beyond the music and trippy visuals.

>Frontier (movie version)
I liked Sheryl's ludicrously extravagant concerts, and the galactic conspiracy stuff could've been cool if it had some more time to play out. The big battle at the end of part 1 was also kinda neat but felt a bit overindulgent at that point of the story, like some fatcat producers were trying to compensate for a drought of action scenes in the time leading up to that point.
Everything else is fine I guess, just like Plus it's been a couple years since I watched them.
I take it the key differences between the movie and TV series are mostly the same as SDF: one version condenses the story to it's barest essentials and has better production values, while the other has more time to let things develop.

>Robotech II (comic)
Read a few issues on-and-off because I like the whole space journey premise and it was originally supposed to be a full-length TV continuation of the original "trilogy", picking up a few years after the the end of Macross and scheduled to release when the IP was fairly new.
Still hovering around the somewhat trite preamble that made up the pilot film though, haven't even reached the wedding ceremony. The lads who got it on VHS back in the day must've felt pretty gypped.
>>
Well I've done it.
I've acquired the final sacrifice. Now all I need is the virgin blood of an undiscovered idoru, and I can begin the ritual to manifest the Chogokin DX YF-21 into this world, completing the profane atrocity that Bandai first attempted three years ago at a trade show.

The Macross F movies play on the expectations of people who've seen the TV series. Certain characters have near-death experiences in the movies when they died in the series.

The Mactross F series has a legendary episode that also plays on fan expectations, where a certain character trips death flags in every scene.

Screening was fun. People were well-behaved and the crowd was quiet aside from laughing at GAHDEMMIT and the Brera sewer swoop and cheering toward the end.
Pretty normal-looking crowd of about twenty-five people, like the kinds of 20s and 30s anime con attendees who are there to mind their own business and wear their dorky t-shirts. Cute middle-aged couple in front of me where the wife would go "awww" at most of Ranka's scenes. There was one tranny, but he kept to himself (enough that I'm not 100% sure it wasn't just a very unfortunate-looking woman) other than trying to talk to me on the way out of the theater. I probably deserved it for being a turbo autist and going with a Frontier towel draped over my shoulders.

I was only expecting fancied-up concert scenes, so the new subplot and the increased Cheryl content were a pleasant surprise.
6/10 experience, 8/10 movie, coming back for Sayonara no Tsubasa for sure.

Probably an incompetent projectionist. The one at my theater hadn't matted the frame right, so you could see the left and right edges with blank space on either side, and also somehow managed to skew the picture so the subtitles were at like a 3-degree angle instead of in a straight line. It drove me crazy the whole fucking time because it was just minuscule enough of an issue to make me wonder whether I was only imagining it.
I swore I'd never come back to this theater after they fucked up Tokyo Godfathers by chopping like two inches off the top and bottom of the frame, but it's only 15 minutes from my house.

Middle aged Basara is not something I thought I wanted in my life. It would be great, there's a lot you can do there.

>the cashgrab reunion
>Basara going through a solo experimental music phase
>the failed solo albums by other members
>having an old song covered by a new act and it being mis-attributed as an original (Bowie and Nirvana)
>>
My audience was so lifeless and i was one of only 2 people who clapped when it was over.
>>
>>20933937
Dont worry, I'm sure everyone involved with the movie heard it
>>
>>20933944
Speaking of which, the movie didn't even start at 7 to the point that somebody went outside and asked one of the theater staff what the hell was happening.

Then it abruptly cut to sheryl's concert without any sound before they started the movie over with alto's finally audible monologue.

>Don't know about you but my favorite part of SDF is probably the episodes where they're stuck on the Zentraedi battleship, flimsy disguise and all.
Salutations, fellow patrician. The Zentraedi culture shock humor just never gets old for me. I think it got even funnier as the show went on and the gags built off the previous ones, like pic related and Laplamiz and Quamzin plotting their revenge where she's like "hey bby after we're done with this can we go 'indulge in Protoculture' (i.e. do the sex) again?"

>It would be great, there's a lot you can do there.
Heartily agree. It's loaded with potential. Even comparatively low-effort stuff like Fire Bomber: Behind the Music would be such a trip.
It might be asking for too much to hope for that kind of introspection and too-close-to-the-bone music industry realism in a Macross, but on the other hand, that subject matter might really strike a chord with Kawamori and some of the other staff who were pioneering figures on SDF and stayed working long enough to see the modern anime landscape assume its current shape.

September 28th, with the Delta movie.

This, plus the love triangle was even more ridiculously unbalanced than the Frontier movies' was. Poor Mirage was never a viable rival. You don't just do a Jenius dirty like that.

>>20934137
I thought Delta was pretty mediocre (saw series and the movie) but I still want to see the yandere versions of Walkure

Man, Megumi is still super cute. I wonder if her voice is still the same after all these years thanks to her inactivity, young Maaya Sakamoto sounded like her but her voiced changed after going all out in stage shows and stuff.
>>
It's interesting to see the penlight colours and try to figure out if there were more Rankafags or Sherylfags.

i wonder if delta movies will be screened ever here in the states as well

Probably, but they gotta get all the fan faves out of the way first

So, why doesn't /m/ ever talk about Uta Macross, or how big they made Sheryl's tits?

They both seem very uncomfortable watching their live performances.... Especially May'n.

I don't know that that was the cause. Deepening of the voice with age is natural for most people. Maaya had just turned 16 when her first single came out, while Megumi was 20 and already through puberty when she first voiced Ranka.

Don't forget to get your Wings of Farewell tickets /m/.

They also did a great job with Ranka's butt.

Megumi sounds the EXACT fucking same as she did 10 years ago or so, its unnerving

>he'd love to do a Macross 7 sequel with Basara in his fifties still trying to rock out even after the fans have moved on to the next big thing
>>
>>20936404
I heard that Maaya's voice changed because she strained it too much when performing in a series of Les Miserables shows. Not sure how true that is though.

I watched the first one and I already like it more. I'm looking forward to seeing the second one with a friend because that whole setpiece from Frontier's final episode was really cool, but all the reveals and tying up the themes was rushed.

I tend to prefer the movie versions over the TV shows in Macross, DYRL being my all-time favorite anime movie. I wish Kawamori had reworked M7 as a movie, scrapping all the unnecessary parts and making the good parts stand out. It's the only iteration that didn't get the movie treatment, and in my opinion it would have benefited the most from it.

I very quickly watched the TV show in preparation for the first movie, and if anything it made me more confused.
Wait, Sheryl knows Brera now? She knows the Aimo song too? The galaxy hasn't been destroyed yet? Etc.
Same thing happened when I went to see the Plus movie in theaters. I was running late and thought that it wouldn't matter because I'd seen the OVA series, but I was wrong.

Not him, but I imagine he's talking about Ozma. In one episode, he reminisces about his relationship with Cathy, recklessly charges headfirst into battle, and then goes to see Ranka in concert while not attending to his wounds. And then we cut to him in the hospital and he looks into the camera and says this. I laughed.

my first exposure to frontier was a imported copy of srwz3
it wasn't until I talked to my brother I realized the show was violently different from the movie
all that said is it me or is all of ranka's pre wings of goodbye music fucking shit? all of her sayonara no tsubasa music is so great
>>
>>20940567
You can make a case for Sheryl favoritism for sure, but I don't know about the music sucking part. Seikan Hikou is probably pound for pound my favorite song from all of Frontier after Triangler.

And won't see there either cuz it's AX. It's like a trainwreck with costumes.

As the guy who made that thread, who also was the guy who ended up getting an Arcadia VF4 and DX Armored 1J, l just want to say one thing:

Kill me now, I'm several VF toys in deep and just got premium finish Max n Miria Super 1Js because I gave up on Bandai making DXs of the M&Ms but now I need to find stands for these fuckers. Oh God please deliver me from this evil.

I just bought some 2nd hand calibre wings stands for my valks
>>
>>20945391
That's what I figured, anything like those tripod stilt stands ought to be decent enough. Still, it's super fucked up to keep packaging stand adaptor parts and not have an official stand in active production.

I feel like I'm expected to own a 3d printer or something for these kinds of problems now.
>>
>>20944417
Part of me is happy that a new generation can potentially get exposed to Macross through things like this, while the other half of my is old, cynical and jaded and knows that they are mostly pandering to oldfags cause most anime fans younger than 21 don't give a shit about mecha or old shit like this. I used to love going to cons but now it's just another arm of the gigantic soulless media machine. the "Exclusive video content" will probably shit that came out on Japanese DVD years
>>
>while in the prototype YF-29 that was loaded to the brim with Fold Crystals and synchronised with Ranka and Sheryl's Sayonara no Tsubasa, Alto perceives time slower and could read Brera's moves in advance
Come to think of it, he was pretty much in the Windfags and Hayate's O MY WIND mode at the time, wasn't he?
